This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, March 14th. According to the National Weather Service, we can expect a partly sunny day in the Cedar Rapids area, with a high near 56. Winds from the south 10 to 15 mph then from the southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Then tonight, it should be mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. If state lawmakers go along with legislation already approved by the Iowa House, it could be the last time Iowans have to go through the twice-a-year ritual of changing their clocks — if Congress agrees, too. In a floor debate, Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City, cited research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine warning of the dangers of seasonal time changes. Any change in the twice-a-year clock change also would be dependent on Congress because federal law does not allow full-time daylight saving time. Under the Uniform Time Act, states may exempt themselves from daylight saving time. Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time at all. In men's basketball, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated Purdue Sunday, 75-66 at Indianapolis in the Big Ten men's basketball tournament championship game. The triumph catapulted Iowa toward the NCAA tournament with a 26-9 record and produced its first title in this event since 2006. Keegan Murray had a game-high 19 points and broke the record for total points in this tourney with 103. Murray was named the tourney's Most Outstanding Player, and Bohannon was on the all-tournament team. Support for this podcast provided by New Pioneer Food Co-op. Today's guest on CPG is a member of the Poker Hall-of-Fame, former owner of CardPlayer Magazine, early investor in PartyPoker, and was a major driving force behind the World Poker Tour coming to reality… the amazing Linda Johnson. It isn't hyperbole to say that Linda has been one of the most influential figures in the world of poker for at least the past 30 years as both a pioneer and visionary. As a pioneer, she planted the seeds for poker's exponential growth by forcing poker rooms to adopt stronger rules regarding atrocious behavior. As a visionary, she instantly recognized the potential for bringing poker mainstream when Adam Pliska pitched her and Mike Sexton on the idea of the holecard cam. Before you dive into today's conversation with Linda Johnson… for those of you who have been listening to Chasing Poker Greatness from the beginning, you might remember one of my early questions:“When you think of greatness in the world of poker, who's the first person that comes to mind?”I stopped asking it because it quickly became obvious that 90% of my guests were gonna answer Doyle Brunson or Phil Ivey. But as I was sitting here thinking of what to say in this intro, it dawned on me that if I were asked that question in the present moment, my immediate most honest answer would be Linda Johnson. Many moons ago she fell in love with a beautiful card game that existed in a world that wasn't very kind to her. Instead of accepting this reality or finding a new game to love, Linda invested every ounce of her lifeforce rising up to meet the challenges and paved the way for the poker world as we now know it.For that, I personally owe her a debt I can never repay. My only hope is that the next generation of poker players has half of her resolve and willpower so that we can continue fighting the good fight Linda began many years ago...Showing the outside world why the game of poker is worthy of both love and aspiration.Without any further ado, I bring to you my conversation with poker hall-of-famer, Linda Johnson. To learn more about the Free Nuffle promotion, visit: https://chasingpokergreatness.com/free-nuffle-promotionNew CPG Cash Game Courses!Preflop Bootcamp: https://bit.ly/Preflop-BootcampFish in a Barrel: http://bit.ly/fish-in-a-barrelNeutralize Flop Leads: https://bit.ly/2OkN8Yt

Gavin Griffin was one of the original young stars of the poker boom, becoming the then-youngest World Series of Poker bracelet winner in history at the age of 22 at the 2004 summer series. The Darien, Illinois native earned $270,420 for taking down the $3,000 pot-limit hold'em event. He busted Phil Hellmuth at the final table, which promoted the Poker Brat to utter the now infamous line of, "If there weren't luck involved, I guess I'd win every one."A few years later, Griffin made the trip to Monte Carlo for the EPT Grand Final Championship and took it down for $2,429,103. In 2008, he won the World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open for another $1,401,109. The three marquee tournament titles made him the first player ever to win poker's Triple Crown, a feat that has since been accomplished by only eight others. In 2012, he nearly added a second bracelet, finishing runner-up in the $1,500 Omaha eight-or-better event. The 39-year-old has more than $5 million in career tournament earnings.Highlights from this interview include 'cleansing' rain, the relationship between Dalmatians and horses, 'losing' for a living, leaving TCU for poker, riverboat casino dealing, winning his WSOP bracelet, Hellmuth's quote, running good while being sick, David Pham's consistent lie, the Triple Crown, what you do with a free Harley Davidson, feeling the pressure from PokerStars, a $1,000-$2,000 2-7 triple draw game, side bets with Gavin Smith, Mike Sexton's chuckle, being an 'equities analyst,' and disappointing Tobey Maguire fans.To download this episode or to subscribe to the podcast check out the link below:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/card-player-poker-podcasts
