Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From October 2024. Today's 2 topics: - To discover what would happen if an asteroid were to strike a large body of water, Dr. Galen Gisler led a team of scientists who used high performance computing facilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory to calculate and visualize a 3-D model of an asteroid entering the Earth's atmosphere over one of the world's oceans. These efforts won them the Best Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase award at Supercomputing 2016. Reality is that what happens depends upon the mass, size, speed, angle of approach, and composition of the impacting object. Galen's group of scientists documented the hunch that since an asteroid strikes the water at a single point, it only effects the immediate region around the impact point, whereas to create a tsunami, you need something like an under water landslide which disturbs an entire water column from the ocean floor to the surface. - The ALMA radio telescope located in the Atacama desert of northern Chile is able to see the faint millimeter wave length glow emitted by gas molecules and dust particles in the disk of material surrounding the very young star named HD 163296. This solar system in formation is located about 400 light years away in the constellation of Sagittarius. HD 162396's age compared to our Sun is like that of a 3 day old human baby compared to a 65 year old adult. 8:00AM Hour 3 Jeremy White and Joe DiBiase discuss the Bills offseason so far, and point out the lack of a massive splash move. They look back on the huge moves of past offseasons.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Duane Steinel from the 2 Goalies 1 Mic podcast to discuss several topics involving the Buffalo Sabres, including if a big splash move that's surely needed is imminent this offseason. This is Duane's first appearance on the podcast and Patrick spends a few minutes getting know Duane and his podcast, part of the Built in Buffalo network. Duane first gained popularity in the Sabres fans hockey community after a memorable rant while calling into WGR 550 back in 2020 over his frustration with the organization both on and off the ice. They get into some current Sabres talk and like nearly everyone else, annoyance with the team mounts as Buffalo just missed the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season, tied with the New York Jets for the longest drought in all four of the major sports. It's clear they need to do something special this summer to get fans to start believing again, and a popular name being brought up is pending Toronto star Mitch Marner who's a noted Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen fan. Patrick asks Duane point blank if there's any chance of Marner wanting to come to Buffalo and what kind of contract it would take for it to even be a consideration. Assuming Marner's off the table (spoiler alert--he almost certainly is) Duane goes over some other potential splash moves Buffalo could make before taking the ice next season. In fact, is a move imminent? They also spend some time talking about a number of good Sabres players who are restricted free agents. Also, Alex Tuch is eligible for an extension on July 1st and what's up with the Sabres goaltending situation. That and plenty more. You can follow Duane on Twitter @DuaneS39 and check out the 2 goalies 1 mic podcast on the Built in Buffalo network.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.Special thanks to local Buffalo band, Orange Zest for allowing us to use their awesome single, “Old Friends” as the new official intro music for Talking Buffalo. Check out Orange Zest and be sure to support not only them, but local music!

Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org From September & October 2024. Today's 2 topics: - Collect your own beautiful micro-meteorite sample. It is estimated that several hundred thousand pounds of left over particles from the formation of our solar system enters the Earth's atmosphere every day with perhaps 10% of the of the total reaching the surface of our home planet.
