Lt. Col. Tom Schueman served in Afghanistan for sixteen months, including the single bloodiest battle of the war in Afghanistan, as a platoon commander with the Third Battalion, Fifth Marines in Helmand Province. He redeployed to Afghanistan as a JTAC and advisor to the Afghan National Army while he was a member of First Reconnaissance Battalion. Schueman went on to get his master's in English literature at Georgetown University and teach English literature at the United States Naval Academy. In 2022, alongside his friend and Afghani interpreter, Zak, he published Always Faithful, a book about his time in Afghanistan and the effort to get Zak and his family to America before the Taliban could make good on their promise to kill them. Thomas is still an active-duty Marine and the founder of the nonprofit Patrol Base Abbate, based in Montana. As someone who separated from the Corps this past February, Steve's writing about the Marines, his deployment to Helmand and the psychological peaks and valleys of an infantryman's life feels very fresh and relevant. In fact, I find that Steve writes about the Marines in a very post-breakup sort of way – a kind of writing loaded with raw, tender-to-the-touch emotions. This is somewhat by design. Steve was a writer from an early age. Much like Jack Kerouac or George Orwell, Steve felt an innate compulsion to shuck the comfortable malaise of young writer for the constant discontent of an adventurer. In Steve's case, that meant joining the Marine Corps. After a somewhat fulfilling, somewhat demoralizing six year stint, Steve now finds himself tackling his novel, his poetry and short stories with a renewed perspective and a greater understanding of humanity at the extremes. This was an incredibly enjoyable chat with a true artist whose stroll down a warrior's path has left him a far more interesting writer and thinker.

Listen in as we discuss his most powerful moments of combat as a young lieutenant platoon commander, ambushed just moments after stepping out of friendly lines on his very first combat patrol. Hear him debrief himself and learn what he did well and what he'd do differently. He sheds light on how leadership is simple but never easy. He explains how he would adopt a more harmonious approach to company command rather than what he describes as a ruthless drive for "results first." We discuss his new book, Always Faithful – A story of war in Afghanistan, the fall of Kabul, and the unshakable bond between a Marine and an interpreter, which becomes available on August 8th, 2022.  We wrap up discussing the foundation he created, Patrol Base Abbate, of which I am honored to be a member of the Board of Directors. Patrol Base Abbate is named after Marine Sergeant Matt Abbate, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Matt became the inspiration behind creating a place where everyone who's raised their hand, swore an oath, and wrote a blank check payable in the amount up to and including their own life, feels like they can rest and refit by re-entering friendly lines. This is an incredibly insightful and empowering discussion that leaders from all branches and of all ages can gain something from.  Finally, please consider supporting this project at the new Patreon site at: https://www.patreon.com/momentsinleadershipRelevant Resources & Other Mentioned Episodes:Moments In Leadership Patreon Account: https://bit.ly/3SBxK6fAlways Faithful – link to the book on Amazon (non-affiliate link): https://amzn.to/3p25Q60Major Tom Schueman IG Account: https://bit.ly/3QoMh3fMajor Justin Gray IG Account: https://bit.ly/3SxUcgQPatrol Base Abbate: https://bit.ly/3Qm2XIKPatrol Base Abbate DONATE: https://bit.ly/3Q5ZChlSgt Matt Abbate Navy Cross Citation: https://bit.ly/3bExaEiSgtMaj Dan Reynolds Episode: https://bit.ly/39PZXoqLtGen Dave Furness Episode: https://bit.ly/3cibePj What is Moments in Leadership?Moments in Leadership is a podcast where you will hear firsthand about the careers of senior military leaders as they share their unique and individual experiences. Issues discussed in this episode: Raising awareness of the difficulties doctors face in trying to give of themselves without giving so much it destroys them Why physician suicide rate is the highest of any profession (more than double the general population) and how to help Coping with a sensitive personality and how to grow from trauma The very qualities – compassion, sensitivity, dedication – that often lead young people to a career in medicine, often make it difficult for them to reconcile their ideals with the cold, hard reality of morbidity and mortality: conditions no amount of caring can ever change “A generation of young men went to Vietnam naive and idealistic,” says Collins. “They returned home broken and disillusioned—if they returned at all. We doctors are often victims of a similar fate. Like soldiers, the things we see and do are often too much to bear. “When you're living a life for others, you're living a life well-lived.” - Thomas Schueman On this episode of Got Your 6, Tony interviews Thomas Schueman, a United States Marine Corps Major, a decorated veteran of the Afghanistan war, entrepreneur, and professor. Tom is the president and founder of https://www.pbabbate.org/ (Patrol Base Abbate), a non-profit that honors the legacy of the late Marine Sergeant Matthew Abbate – both of them served in the same company in Afghanistan. The organization provides veterans and transitioning service members an online community and a physical place in Thompson Falls, Montana to recalibrate, reflect, and learn new skills. His role model for selfless service is his mother, who single-handedly raised him and his sister while also working as a South Side Chicago police officer. “When you're living a life for others, you're living a life well-lived.” As an entrepreneur, he is constantly working on finding different ways to inspire others in his organization – outside of the vertical leadership model in the military. He says he also had to recalibrate his expectations after realizing that not all people have the same standards, values, and backgrounds. “One thing that transcends all realms is listening and learning. If I take the time to listen to where you're coming from, what matters to you, what motivates you, I then know how to help you.” One key thing he recently rediscovered is the value of humility. Owing to his graduate school experience, he learned to humble himself and accept the fact that he could not do things alone. ----- 01:15 – Introduction 01:46 – How Tom finds the determination to do several things and finish them: “What sustains me is the sense of purpose.” 02:47 – On selfless service: “When you're living a life for others, you're living a life well-lived” 03:18 – His mother as his role model for selfless service. 04:15 – Being a leader is not about you, it's about your people. 04:58 – How he started writing. If I take the time to listen where you're coming from, what matters to you, what motivates you, I then know how to help you.” 10:04 – On the value of taking security pauses and tactical halts 10:52 – One concrete example of how taking a tactical halt and reviewing a snap judgment helped him and others: He was ready to admonish a US Naval Academy student until he reviewed the student's essays and felt there was something going on at home. Instead of going all out against the student, he chose a different method and asked the student to open up to him. 13:31 – “I keep trying to remind myself to just take one second and make sure there aren't any other external factors.” 14:03 – On having high standards for himself and the challenge of understanding that others are not built the same way. 15:33 – Understanding that what works for his team may not actually be what works for him 16:09 – His pride got in the way of seeking help from others. “I'd rather almost drown quite literally than ask someone to throw me a life raft.” 16:50 – But this changed in graduate school when he realized he could not make it on his own. He got out of his comfort zone, humbled himself, and found his tribe with his brilliant 22-year-old classmates, TJ and Gabby. 19:11 – How is he better than yesterday? This week we welcome Major Tom Schueman, founder of Patrol Base Abbate.  Maj. Schueman shares a story of brotherhood and commitment, personified by the acts of heroic veterans during the drawdown and exit from Afghanistan.  Like so many veterans, Maj. Schueman's mission to rescue his interpreter, Zak, was an example of an American servicemember's promise to his allies.  Zak, and his family, braved the a trek from Kunar, through Taliban controlled territory, to Kabul.  Once there, Maj. Schueman financed their stay in a small apartment as they repeatedly tried to gain access to Hamid Karzai International Airport.  On the third day of chaos, with the help of military members on the ground, contacts back in the United States, and a fearless Afghan driver, Tom got the word  that he had been waiting for, "We have them".  We commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with this story of hope, and the example of what it means to be a GWOT veteran. We also discuss the mission of Patrol Bas Abbate.  PB Abbate offers free-of-cost retreats in "Big Sky Country" for service members and eligible veterans, where they can reconnect with their warrior spirit, foster community through shared interests, and re-discover purpose in service to each other, their families, and their communities.  PB Abbate also offers local chapters in major cities across the country to help their members serve their communities and foster connectedness through a mutually beneficial network.  For more information about Patrol Base Abbate, and to register to get involved, go to https://www.pbabbate.org/.Support the show and get your Bulletproof Veteran apparel at https://amzn.to/3BA3dx9 or see all the available shirts at http://bulletproofveteran.com/apparel

Many times we get lost in the "battlefield" portion of combat and forget that in order to build it, you need volunteers. Brave men and women who are willing to serve others.  Maybe even less realized, at times, is that everyone must return to base at some point. PB Abbate is helping with the latter part in a special way.

Tony Haberer joins me to talk about many things, including playing college sports, serving in the Marine Corps, his transition into the civilian world, and also about him working to stand up the newest PB Abbate chapter, in Louisville, Kentucky. One of the best things about this chat is Tony's ability to bring to light the challenges of transition into the civilian job sector, but also the various options available.

Schueman goes into detail about how PB Abbate came about and what his intentions are with the organization. Plunkett is an example of Schueman's trust in veterans that want to continue to serve. Plunkett put himself out there and now helps give back to the community. PB Abbate's reach is endless and has only begun. It was a great time talking to these two. Enjoy!
