Creativity can be a powerful tool for spreading eco-awareness. As the climate crisis worsens, today's guest, sustainable sculptor and NOT REAL ART grant winner Danielle O'Malley, joins us to discuss the intersection of art and environmental awareness and how communities can work together to stem the rising tide.Growing up in rural Montana, Danielle learned to garden, preserve food, and care for livestock, which heightened her sensitivity to local environments and the increasingly hazardous climate. Still based in Montana, she now creates large-scale, site-specific sculptural installations that explore the ecological impact of industrialization with a combination of upcycled materials and industrial surplus. Throughout the episode, Danielle shares insights into her creative process, which ebbs and flows with the season. Our conversation also explores the complexities of being an artist in a conservative state like Montana, where the creative community is supportive but underfunded. Danielle reflects on the challenges and opportunities that arise from living and working in a rural setting, emphasizing how mentorship and community support can empower emerging artists to embrace their creativity without the constraints of societal expectations. Danielle's philosophy on resource sharing and grassroots networking manifests in projects like Montana Clay, a gathering designed to foster connections between ceramic artists who live and work in “Big Sky Country.”Danielle's story invites listeners to reconsider the role of artists in society and the vital importance of nurturing creative voices that resonate with the existential dilemma of our time. Inside this episode with Mitch Hampton This episode is an exciting one for us in that it contains many firsts: for one it our first show featuring a gallery and for another it is the first with two guests who are also a married couple. Among the many reasons for me creating and then hosting our podcast is that I was most fortunate to grow up in the New York City of the 1970s and 80s, in which I was literally raised on institutions such as MOMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cawdrey Gallery represents a most important feature of our current art world - that which is representative of worlds of art in places away from the coasts of these United States. Nancy and Steve have had quite the eclectic lives since they also had a long career, off all things, running a Wilderness School. I can't think of a better example of the pluralism and diversity to which we are devoted on our podcast than this conversation with Steve and Nancy Cawdrey of Montana. More about our friends at the wonderful Cawdrey Gallery, here: ( please not this is an abbreviated version for space- for our full article visit our show Facebook page and Cawdrey Gallery Website) The Cawdrey Gallery proudly hosts contemporary artists of the American West. The spirit of the West is as dynamic and diverse as ever, and we aim to showcase much more than just Western Art through a range of subject matter and mediums from sublimely painted vistas to animated sculptures. We facilitate and inspire fine art experiences with our collectors, artists, and community. When gallery owner and artist Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey began painting in Montana about 25 years ago, she wanted to express how it really FELT living in Big Sky Country. Nancy along with her husband Steve and son Morgan, opened their first gallery in Bigfork, MT. In 2017 the gallery relocated to Whitefish and expanded to represent more than 20 artists working in over 10 different media. Making art and experiencing art is about rediscovering the world, moment by moment, and our hope is that it invites us to linger and remain in that moment of awe. American Western art is not only about preserving a storied past—but it is also about capturing and reimagining our present. Visit us at Cawdrey Gallery to see a large variety of original fine art and high quality reproductions all in one space. Be sure to also walk around charming downtown Whitefish, Montana, home to many talented artists including western photographers, western wildlife sculptors, unique ceramicists and potters, and a variety of contemporary fine artists. More about Nancy Cawdrey and her beautiful work, here: “Whatever medium I am working in, I like to mix color on the surface of the painting–giving the work more immediacy and spontaneity–what I call spirited silk painting. On silk I can really float brilliant color with spirit and gusto.” Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey paints with vibrant French dyes on crepe de chine silk fabric adapting her experience in water media to express her renowned contemporary style. Cawdrey's signature western motif paintings, vibrant florals, and commanding wildlife masterworks can be found in museums and private collections around the world. In 2020, Nancy was honored to launch a one-woman traveling museum exhibit titled “Forever Glacier” which focuses on the mammals native to Glacier National Park. Secretary Russell Redding made an official Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture trip to Montana this week to meet with founders of IND HEMP, one of the largest hemp fiber and seed processors in the U.S. On this week's podcast, Lancaster Farming catches up with Redding as he visits the hemp facility in Fort Benton, Montana. The show features a joint interview with Redding and IND HEMP founder Ken Elliott from the IND HEMP office. Redding said he originally planned to attend the Montana Hemp Summit, hosted by IND HEMP, in Great Falls later this month, but had a commitment in Pennsylvania he could not cancel. Wanting to see the oil seed and fiber processing facilities with his own two eyes to better understand what is needed back home in Pennsylvania, he scheduled a last-minute trip to Big Sky Country. The fact-finding trip is part of a larger commitment from his department to develop a robust hemp industry in Pennsylvania, where, so far, the industry has struggled to find capital to build out the processing infrastructure. Redding spent the day with IND HEMP founders Morgan Tweet and Ken and Julie Elliott who answered his questions and gave him a tour of both the oil-seed facility and the fiber-processing facility, housed in separate facilities on IND HEMP's campus in Fort Benton, a town along the Missouri River in north-central Montana with a population of around 1,400. IND HEMP has created just over 50 jobs since setting up the facility in 2019. Redding is returning home with a new perspective. “I think in Pennsylvania, having something that would look like what is happening here in Montana is exactly what everybody in the steering committee and the hemp engine is trying to do, but it's not the final answer,” Redding said. “What I've learned today is that there's a quest to just keep building out the marketplace,” he said. “And the economics of that marketplace then determine sort of what those income streams look like for both the company and the farms,” he said. Elliott is optimistic about the Keystone State's potential in the burgeoning hemp industry, partially because of Pennsylvania's reputation for hemp in colonial times. He was keynote speaker at the Pennsylvania Hemp Summit in Harrisburg November 2022 and has since gotten to know key players in Pennsylvania's hemp industry. “We can help you guys take that next step,” he said. “We would love to be part of whatever the solution is for Pennsylvania's the hemp industry.” Do Pennsylvania farmers even have an appetite for hemp, after the boom and bust of the CBD market along with recent controversies surrounding so-called hemp-derived intoxicants like Delta 8? Redding thinks Pennsylvania have an appetite for something big and boring that can be another revenue stream for producers. “The margins, whether you're in Montana or Pennsylvania, are thin,” Redding said. “So to whatever extent we can add diversity to it — you can help de-risk the operation by adding an enterprise — that's universal.” Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Hemp Program IND HEMP Thanks to our sponsors! Watch the Trailer for The Heiress and the Handyman Our Thoughts on The Heiress and the Handyman For a comprehensive review, be sure to tune into our podcast episode where we dive deep into all the details. First Impression Our first impression of The Heiress and the Handyman? Well, the Dollar Tree fall decor was the only clue indicating this was a fall movie. Additionally, we were puzzled by the character June's wig, which became a constant distraction throughout the film. What We Liked There were a few things we appreciated: Corey Sevier and Jodie Sweetin: Both actors delivered solid performances given the material they were handed. Their individual talents helped keep the movie afloat. Community Theme: One of the elements we enjoyed was how June, played by Jodie Sweetin, found a sense of community and family in the small town. Despite her initial struggles, she began to immerse herself in her new surroundings, which was a redeeming aspect of the storyline. Fall Vibes Attempt: At least the film made some effort to provide fall vibes with a festival, pie contest, and some fall foliage B-roll shots. While not the most convincing, it was better than no attempt at all. What We Wished For Several aspects of the movie left much to be desired: Character Depth: Rich is not a personality trait, and unfortunately, June was portrayed as a very one-dimensional character. We learnt about her lavish lifestyle, but not enough about who she really was. Romance Between Bart and June: The romance felt forced and lacked substance.
Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks with Ken Schultz, President of the Montana Bowhunters Association or MBA. Ken and Rigger cover a TON of ground all about bowhunting in the Big Sky Country. Things like, what all does the MBA do for Montana's bowhunters, the advantages of being a member and what issues the sport is facing now and in the future. Another area that they cover is the incredible popularity of bowhunting in the State and why. For example, do you know how many bowhunters there are now in Montana? Take a guess and then listen to the podcast and see if you are right. We are guessing that most of you will miss that question. Another question that Rigger and Ken discuss is why some states have abandoned an exclusive archery season and why that continues to be proposed in Montana and how likely that may happen. The good news for archery hunters is they also talk about what the Montana Bowhunters Association is doing to try to make sure that does not happen. Here's another question, do you think crossbow hunting should be considered archery hunting? Listen to see what most bowhunters in Montana think about that. Another really interesting topic that Ken and Rigger covered is what the MBA is doing for Disabled Veterans and others with disabilities so that they can still hunt with a bow. "I DON'T THINK THE ‘MONTANA MIRACLE' IS A ONE-TIME FLUKE. I THINK IT CAN REPRESENT A NEW PARADIGM OF POLITICS IN MONTANA, WHERE THE LEFT AND RIGHT JOIN TOGETHER IN COMMON BELIEF THAT MONTANANS MUST BE FREE TO BUILD, INNOVATE, AND PROGRESS IN ORDER TO OVERCOME THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FACING OUR STATE." So we opened our Season Nine here at the ‘Are We Here Yet?' podcast with this quote from Kendall Cotton. He is Executive Director of the Frontier Institute. We met earlier this year after Kendall was interviewed by the New York Times. What caught my attention and compelled me to reach out to him was his thoughts on the housing crisis. In our discussion we focused much time on how the current housing market is affecting Big Sky Country and especially on the solutions this rural state has brought to the table including re-thinking zoning and passing Montana House bill 819 which offers developers funding in order they may pass savings on to the future homeowner. Additionally, Kendall and I spoke regarding other initiatives important to the institute and to Montana's 21st century economy including #artificial intelligence, #dataprivacy and the government and how these sectors affect each other in the rural places we call home. The similarities with our other rural states abound. The bipartisanship baked into the efforts of the Frontier Institute are an example to others working on substantive solutions to our rural development challenges. You'll find Kendall on twitter @Cotton_MT And in The Jazz Room… We enjoyed our conversation with singer, Christie Dasheil. She talks about her CD “Journey in Black” and what it was like growing up in a musical family. Learn more about Christie by clicking here

Exact Nature: https://exactnature.com/RE20 [02:16] Highlights from Paul: Today is episode 9 out of 10 in the Q&A series. Today's question comes from Krista B, in our Café RE group. She says: “How Paul is feeling about ayahuasca and other plant medicines. Are you still as passionate about its benefits today as a few years ago? Has the treatment worked in a sustained way, in your opinion?” Paul shared his initial experience with ayahuasca in episode 170. He believes that plant medicines have a place in the world of addiction and mental health. Do not buy it on the internet and try it solo; set and setting is everything. There is so much preparation that needs to go into an ayahuasca ceremony and under the right circumstances, it will answer many questions. A big one being why you drink. Paul shares how ayahuasca still impacts his everyday life. While Paul found plant medicine helpful on his journey, he recognizes it's not for everyone, nor does he think everyone should try plant medicine. If you are interested, please do your own research before trying it. He is an entrepreneur and enjoys being creative through many avenues. Chris always felt like an outsider that didn't belong while he was growing up. His parents divorced when he was young, and he blamed himself and ended up distancing himself from people. He craved connections and ended up starting drinking with a group of friends. Chris felt like alcohol was the solution to his feelings of not belonging. His drinking increased and over time he lost all those connections that he used alcohol to find and was drinking alone. At age 23 he went to treatment where they helped him recognize that he had some mental health issues, the main ones being social anxiety and depression. Some alumni from the group accepted Chris, helped him go to meetings and then they would all socialize afterwards. He finally felt he was making connections that he had craved all his life. Seeing people that were staying sober and succeeding was a big boost to Chris' confidence, and he felt like it was possible for him to do the same. His life in sobriety was becoming so great that he never had a desire to go back to drinking. Chris started going to school to become a counselor and immediately started working in the recovery field. He knew it was important to maintain and strengthen his recovery to do the job successfully. Chris started Sans Bar in 2018 as a pop-up bar when there were very few options in the alcohol-free arena. The pop-ups grew, and more and more people were interested in what Chris was doing, mostly through word of mouth. He feels it came along at the right time as the sober curious movement was beginning. Chris says doing this gave him the same feelings that his first sip of booze did – he was forming connections. He feels Sans Bar is for everyone, not just people in recovery. Chris's favorite resources in recovery: The Luckiest Club, 12 step programs, podcasts. Chris's parting piece of guidance: you can't fail. The point of sobriety is not abstinence, it's growth. Jim Manley is the founder of the world's first-ever Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Ranch, the Ranch at Rock Creek, located in one of Montana's most spectacular valleys. At 10 years old, he told his father, “When I'm older, I'm going to get a horse, a rifle, and a ranch.” Forty-three years later following a successful career in finance, his childhood dream came true. After looking at hundreds of ranches, he finally settled on a property between Yellowstone and Glacier National Park surrounded by white-capped mountains, green meadows and pristine valleys. Yet just after one year, Jim realized his plans for owning a private ranch were destined for something much greater. In today's episode, Jim details his journey in creating the Ranch at Rock Creek, and how he combined the spirit of the west with exceptional luxury service. He shares his vision in creating a place for rugged adventure that also feels like home. Melissa and Jim also explore America's obsession with the idealism of the western frontier, and why man's desire for wide open spaces is a part of the country's identity. Plus - he uncovers the misconceptions about Big Sky Country, shares some of his favorite ranch activities and reveals how an all inclusive philosophy and no vehicle policy changed the guest experience. Melissa ends the episode with a travel hack on the new ETIAS requirement for American travelers heading to Europe in 2024. She breaks down what you need to know, how much it costs and how it will affect your travel plans. In the spring of 2023, Montana's media started to highlight the fact that wild trout populations in Montana's Jefferson Basin – an area that includes the world-famous Big Hole, Ruby, Beaverhead and Jefferson Rivers – were in severe distress. Legendary for cold-water fisheries that have historically supported an abundance of wild trout, the rivers in Southwest Montana are currently experiencing what some are calling a population-level collapse. Is it too late to save Southwest Montana's wild fish numbers and fix are rivers, or is there still hope for the near future when it comes to our fisheries resources? That is the question that needs to be asked and answered. SAVE WILD TROUT is an organization that was launched to address this very crisis: a coalition of anglers, river advocates, concerned citizens, businesses, guides, and outfitters that have come together with the focused mission of protecting wild trout for the benefit of all. In this episode of Waypoints, Jim is joined by two founding members of SAVE WILD TROUT: Guy Alsentzer and Wade Fellin – two individuals who know a thing or two about the rivers of Southwest Montana. Guy is the Executive Director and Founder of Upper Missouri Waterkeeper, and Wade is a guide, lodge owner and outfitter on the Big Hole River.- View all podcast episodes by going to the WAYPOINTS podcast page- WAYPOINTS is brought to you by our friends at Fishpond. This week on No Simple Road we are super stoked to have Torrin Daniels of Kitchen Dwellers joining us here in the studio! Among the many natural wonders in Montana, Wise River runs for about 30 miles through the Southwestern region of the state, cutting through the mountains and flowing into the Big Hole River. Beyond being a favorite spot for fly fishermen, it remains etched into the topography of the land itself. Two hours away in Bozeman, Kitchen Dwellers equally embody the spirit and soul of their home with a sonic palette as expansive as Montana's vistas. The quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin], Torrin Daniels [banjo], Joe Funk [upright bass], and Max Davies [acoustic guitar]—twist bluegrass, folk, and rock through a kaleidoscope of homegrown stories, rich mythology, American west wanderlust, and psychedelic hues. After amassing 5 million-plus streams, selling out shows, and receiving acclaim from Huffington Post, Relix, American Songwriter, and more, the group brings audiences back to Big Sky Country on their third full-length album, Wise River, working with Cory Wong of Vulfpeck as producer, and make sure to check out the new release Kitchen Dwellers - Live At Pine Creek Vol. 2 streaming everywhere you get your music!
