Are you asking God about your big decisions in life? Are you talking to Him in both good and hard times? In this episode, Jeff and Sam discuss: Lessons learned from life-changing events.Pushing through and finding strength in your purpose and cause.Learning how to trust others and delegate for greater success and influence.Knowing what to invest in and what not to invest in each day. Key Takeaways: If you find the right people, you give them the resources and tell them to do things, they're pretty good at it. You will find more success in lifting others and letting them do the work they can do.Technology is the key to putting people with disabilities back to work.It doesn't take too many degrees of separation for most people to find somebody within their family or their friend group who needs accessibility either now or in the future.Remember who is in control. There is a higher power leading you to the right decisions and opening doors. It is up to you to follow Him. "I used to think passion and purpose were the same thing, and then it's been an evolution. But I really think racing is my passion; DRIVEN, which is the name of the facilities, is my purpose." — Sam Schmidt About Sam Schmidt: Sam Schmidt was born in Lincoln, NE, and moved to CA as a toddler. He attended Pepperdine University, receiving a BS in Business Administration in 1986 and an MBA in International Finance in 1987.Following in his father's footsteps, Sam developed an unmeasured interest in motorsports. His goal was to race in the Indianapolis 500.In 1997, he made his 1st IndyCar start. He raced in 3 consecutive Indy 500s and netted his 1st victory from the pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999, finishing the year 5th in series points. During testing in preparation for the 2000 season, Sam suffered a crash on January 6, 2000, which rendered him a quadriplegic. Though no longer able to drive a racecar, Sam was still passionate about the sport. Inspired by meeting paraplegic F1 team owner Sir Frank Williams, he founded Sam Schmidt Motorsports, now the most successful team in the history of the Firestone Indy Lights Series. At the end of 2024, Sam sold the IndyCar team to the McLaren F1 organization so that he could focus on the foundation. After his accident, Sam and a few close friends founded the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, which was rebranded Conquer Paralysis Now (CPN) in 2015. The Foundation has funded research on a global level, providing grants to organizations benefiting the disabled and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.CPN has embarked on a major initiative to spark collaboration among researchers on an international level to find cures and treatments for paralysis. In 2018, the DRIVEN Neuro Recovery Center was opened in downtown Las Vegas as a program of CPN. The facility provides activity-based therapy, an open gym, and many programs for anyone with a neurological disorder. In 2024, CPN opened a flagship 114K sqft DRIVEN center in Carmel, IN, with hopes of creating more facilities around the country.Sam lives in Henderson, NV, with his wife of 33 years, Sheila. Michele Clarizio is a debut author whose journey to publication is as powerful as the story she's written. Though her creative spark first appeared in a middle school art class, life took her down a practical path—earning a degree in International Finance and working in corporate America. It wasn't until a quiet Mother's Day afternoon with a good book that something shifted: she realized she didn't just want to read stories—she wanted to write one. What followed was a decade-long journey of writing in the margins of life—late nights, weekends, and moments stolen between motherhood and work. The result is The Price of Truth—a gripping young adult mystery-thriller with threads of romance, trauma, and healing. It's the first book in her Chasing Peace series, and it's already resonating deeply with early readers.

Economist Brent Neiman recently returned to UChicago from his position as Deputy Undersecretary for International Finance at The US Treasury, only to find his research being used (and misused) in the Trump administration's sweeping new tariff policy. In this episode, Neiman walks us through what the original study actually showed, how it got misinterpreted, and why today's tariff regime marks one of the most consequential trade shifts in decades.
In this episode of Current Account, Clay gives an update on the current state of the U.S. tariff policies, namely with reaction and implications of the April 2nd "Liberation Day" tariff announcements. Clay begins with a scene-setting of what tariffs are currently in place and on hold, before providing a framework for how the current Trump Administration may be approaching tariff implementation - broken down into four main categories: (1) Market reaction, as demonstrated by the immediate market reaction following the April 2nd tariff policy announcements, (2) negotiations and diplomacy, highlighted by trade deals and discussions with many of the United States' main trade partners, (3) political backlash, with most impact likely to be shown at the upcoming 2026 Midterm Elections, and (4) litigation, mainly from legal challenges to the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). *please note that the Institute of International Finance does not provide legal advice This IIF Podcast was hosted by Clay Lowery, Executive Vice President, Research and Policy, with production and research contributions from Christian Klein, Digital Graphics and Production Associate and Miranda Silverman, Senior Program Assistant.

He said, “The risk is extraordinary… World War III has already begun.” (“Jamie Dimon worries ‘World War III has already begun,'” MarketWatch.com, October 24, 2024). Has world war begun? Or, to put it in prophetic terms, is the red horse of Revelation already running? The red horse of Revelation is the second horse ridden by the infamous “four horsemen of the apocalypse.” The red horse of Revelation 6 symbolically pictures the terrifying warfare the Book of Revelation portends in the end-time. The question is, is that horse already running? Have we turned a page in history, where there's no turning back? And most importantly, what can you or I do about it? Nothing could be more urgent than considering whether we and our children can even survive our own world, as it grows more bloody and violent. We'll examine that today on Tomorrow's World. But before we do, be sure to get a pen and paper so you can write down the information for ordering the free study guide we're offering today: The Beast of Revelation: Myth, Metaphor, or Soon-coming Reality? So, join me today on Tomorrow's World, as we examine the Red Horse of Revelation.

In this episode of the Develop This Podcast, Dennis Fraise interviews Ryan Monarch Assistant Professor, Economics Department Syracuse University, an expert in international trade and economics, to discuss the complexities of tariffs and their implications on the economy. The conversation covers the definition of tariffs, their historical context, their role in modern trade, and the economic and consumer impacts. Ryan explains how tariffs can affect supply chains, consumer choices, and the overall market dynamics while also addressing the political motivations behind tariff implementation. The discussion highlights the challenges and uncertainties businesses face in a fluctuating tariff environment and the long-term effects of such policies on the economy. Takeaways A tariff is an increase in the price of imported goods. Tariffs have been a source of government revenue since the founding of the US. President McKinley was known for his pro-tariff stance. Tariffs are used to protect domestic industries from foreign competition. The scale of tariffs under President Trump is unprecedented in modern history. Higher tariffs can lead to increased prices for consumers. Tariffs can disrupt established supply chains and consumer choices. The burden of tariffs often falls on US importers, not foreign producers. Economists generally believe that tariffs create more losers than winners. The long-term effects of tariffs on the economy can take years to understand fully. Learn. Explore. Activate in Place. She has been on a journey of learning and has written a few articles about the youth programs. 6:30 Dave was a previous priesthood quorum advisor before he became bishop. He shares what he learned from the handbook and tried to apply it in his calling. 8:15 Always start with the handbook when beginning a calling. 9:20 Helping the young women have more interactions and feel comfortable with the bishop. The bishopric needs to be spending regular time with the young women. 10:40 The bishopric is not the Young Men presidency. Since Doctrine & Covenants 107 was written they have always been the presidency over the Aaronic priesthood and nothing has changed. 12:40 There are four different people that are critical to buy into the new system for the youth to make it a success. The first is the bishopric. They need to balance focus between Young Men and the Young Women programs. 16:10 The responsibilities of the bishop have changed in the past five years with the new focus on the youth. To help him focus on the youth, the Relief Society president and elders quorum president can step in and help with people that need help in their organizations. 18:30 Dave's ward has begun support groups in the Relief Society for people struggling. It helps take some of the load off of the bishopric and allows them to do more with the youth. 19:40 Empowering the elders quorum president and Relief Society president and delegating to them. Dave shares how he does this. 20:40 When the new handbook now states that the bishop's role is to be over both Young Men and Young Women. With the release of the Young Men presidencies it allows the young men to step up and take on more leadership and responsibility. There needs to be training done to help get this done. 26:30 Helping the young women feel more welcome, more needed, and like they have a place in the Church. 28:30 There are numerous trainings in the handbook and those trainings should happen twice a year.
“Grexit,” Greece dropping out of the Eurozone, seemed the most likely outcome of that country's debt crisis in the early 2010s. There were fears that Grexit would be followed by a more widespread splintering of the Eurozone. But Greece and its creditors came to an agreement that enabled the country to service its debt and contributed to its subsequent recovery (and the preservation of the Eurozone). In a striking turnaround, Greece was named the 2023 “Country of the Year” by The Economist magazine. Charles Dallara (Partners Group) recounts the resolution of this crisis, the Greek recovery, and his role in getting Greece and its creditors to come to agreement, in his new book 'Euroshock: How the Largest Debt Restructuring in History Helped Save Greece and Preserve the Eurozone,' which he discusses in this EconoFact Chats episode, along with the lessons of this experience for the current high-debt conditions today. Charles is Chairman and Advisory Partner at Partners Group. At the time of the Greek crisis he was the Managing Partner of the Institute for International Finance. Before that he spent nearly four decades working on international economic policy issues, including at the United States Treasury.

Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) In this Executive Brief on The Wright Report, Bryan Dean Wright, a former CIA Operations Officer, delves into the complexities and implications of the recently passed REPO Act. Embedded within broader bills to fund foreign wars, notably in Ukraine, this legislation authorizes the U.S. President to seize Russian governmental assets totaling about $300 billion from U.S. and European banks, reallocating them to support the war effort in Ukraine. Wright raises critical questions about the wisdom of such financial interventions, exploring the potential repercussions for the international trust in the U.S. financial system. The discussion outlines the crucial role of the U.S. dollar as both a transaction and a reserve currency, explaining how its stability has underpinned global economic security since World War II. Through a thought experiment involving hypothetical transactions between Guyana and Uruguay, Wright illustrates the fundamental dynamics of international trade and the pivotal role of the U.S. dollar. He expresses concern that the actions under the REPO Act could erode global confidence in the dollar, potentially leading to financial instability and diminishing the economic advantages currently enjoyed by the U.S. Wright warns that while the measures are intended to punish Russia, they could inadvertently accelerate efforts by BRIC nations to develop alternatives to the dollar-centric financial system, challenging U.S. economic dominance. He concludes with a call for fiscal responsibility and strategic financial management to preserve the dollar's status and ensure continued stability in the global financial landscape. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the broader implications of current U.S. foreign and financial policies on the global stage.
Charles Dallara, ex-managing director of Institute of International Finance, talks about his book Euroshock, explaining how the 2012 Greek debt restructuring helped save European economic and monetary union from breakdown. A conversation with David Marsh and Burhan Khadbai.

In this episode of Moments in Leadership, U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Paul Merida and host David B. Armstrong discuss the early parts of his life and career, concluding with his time commanding one of the ‘Crown Jewels' of the Marine Corps, a Marine Expeditionary Unit. His insights provide useful lessons about how to manage disparate organizations over distance and differences.Leaders are sometimes thrown into positions where they have the training, but the sudden onset of responsibility hits them unexpectedly. Colonel Merida speaks to his initial leadership baptism when he was called off leave after initial infantry officer training and thrown into Embassy reinforcement operations in Libya with a short-called-up unit itself. The lessons of setting the tone and creating a climate of discipline are useful to people thrown into a leadership position without due warning. While everyone fashions themselves as the next great General or titan of industry, sometimes, perhaps more often than we want to think about, there exist those leaders who, through a misunderstanding of the environment, create a toxic environment that makes it hard to lead in. Understanding how to lead in this environment, and create a safe operational space for their subordinates. Managing and leading are different aspects of command in the Marine Corps. Colonel Merida addresses the difficulties of planning versus executing a plan, the different qualities a person in a leadership position needs to have, and the various intangibles a unit needs versus the bulletized tangibles. The ability to run massive, personnel and distance-based, organizations is probably the most unique aspect Colonel Merida brings to the Moments in Leadership podcast. Having the ability to harness different units, personnel, ships, and operations within a cohesive structure is part of building a climate, focusing on the basics, and creating a culture of learning. Colonel Merida overall provides a nuanced, unfiltered, and non-flinching look at leadership, followership, and teaching that have culminated in an illustrious career. This Ain't the Boy Scouts – U.S. Army Major General Matthew D. SmithIn this episode of Moments in Leadership, Army Major General Matthew D. Smith and host David B. Armstrong discuss the early parts of his life and career, concluding with his time holding battlespace in Afghanistan without a workup cycle to support that style of operation. His insights offer a different spice to the typical Moments in Leadership ranks as they take into account both National Guard and U.S. Army perspectives. Listeners will hear similarities across this discussion with other Moments in Leadership and will reinforce core leadership traits. Understanding the difference between child's play and the real consequences of actual leadership is one of the first hurdles a military leader must overcome in their journey. A leader has real responsibilities, ethically and legally, to uphold and must be ruthless in carrying them out, as literal lives depend on it. School and training courses can only prepare you so much and you must learn both academic and practical skills. The only thing you can't get back is time. Leaders need to learn from those who have gone before them and not make the leadership mistake of making a mistake someone learned before you. Being liked is a good skill to have as a leader but being liked is not the end goal of leadership. Subordinates will take care of leaders who take care of them and let those who believe they are ‘above it all' be all alone above them. Subordinates' perspectives should be taken into account, but mission success does dictate all. This is a balancing act and an enduring one leaders must undertake. Standards are standards since they are non-negotiable and are often written in others' blood. To rebuild an organization, one must work on building from the ground up and reinforcing the basics, regardless of what they are, and reinforcing the ‘why' behind the ‘what'. Major General Smith concludes with the importance of understanding the purpose, or goal, of a mission being more important than the task, or how, of the mission. He further discusses how understanding the subordinates below you and how the application of a ‘Napoleon's Corporal' is crucially important to success as they are the lowest echelon to carry out the actual mission and need to understand the stated purpose. This episode builds off previous Moments in Leadership and shows how core traits of leadership and followership are universal, even in the U.S. Army.
