On this week's episode of The Aimless Cook Podcast, I want to share with you 5 of the most impactful cookbooks on my life. Cookbooks are not only collections of recipes, but also provide so much in terms of insight and perspective on the chefs that created them. In the case of the books I cover this week, they are memoirs that inspired me and helped guide me to where I am today. I hope that you enjoy this week's episode. Please rate us. The Metal Cell Forums. For the first time ever at Chez Le Faux, join myself, Danielle, Evan, Joe and our special guest Peter Meehan, as we talk about the Metal Scene, talk about some brilliant bands and discuss topics related to our favourite music....METAL! In Part 2 we talk about the lack of Irish Metal bands on the Irish festival circuit. Despite most festivals winning plaudits for featuring diverse acts and independent artists, the Metal scene has been completely ignored. We have a really great debate on that subject and be sure to let us know your thoughts on the comments section. There's plenty of other stuff to keep you interested as well so crack open a drink and enjoy the party like atmosphere in The Metal Cell studios. As always thanks for your support and be sure to subscribe to the show in case you haven't already. Richie.

It’s no secret David Chang has a temper; he’s personally shared accounts of his rage for years, most recently (and vividly) in his 2020 memoir, Eat a Peach. Chang has always controlled the narrative around his anger -- until writer and former Momofuku corporate beverage director Hannah Selinger wrote a thorough essay this past December for Eater about her time working for Chang and the toxic work environment he fostered. In this special Hot Takes on a Plate, Selinger discusses with Rob Petrone how and why Chang has avoided any major backlash for his behavior over the years and what, exactly, accountability would look like in his case.Read Sellinger’s Eater essay: https://www.eater.com/22193151/momofuku-david-chang-memoir-eat-a-peach-review* CORRECTION: During the interview, Rob says Peter Meehan was fired from his position as editor of the Los Angeles Times food section; Meehan resigned. This week's pilot dominated the breakfast airwaves in the 80's, was part of one of radio's great duos and steered the good ship 3KZ, to the FM dial..and KZ FM. Enjoy 30 minutes or so with Peter Meehan!
Another long one! On this weeks episode of food news, Ray explains why your anger against PPP is misplaced and misdirected, outlines the remaining food delivery options, deep dives on the controversy's surrounding Jack The Horse, Atlas Restaurant Group, and Band of Bohemia, highlights all the weeks changes to reopening processes in the face of coronavirus, gives his thoughts on why Dave Changs 7 minute podcast in response to Peter Meehan's firing is vacant face saving B.S., and highlights some positive stories involving oyster delivery service, capping of food delivery app fee's out west, what Columbus Ohio's Brewery District would look like this fall, and gives an update on Comune's donation efforts. This episode starts off with a song from James. It's quite the thing. James is here after a day of some quality DIY commitment, Sam is not loving beer, there's carbonara chat and cannelloni yap too. This is followed up with some ‘reopening of the pubs' discussion, Sam's father in law's digital sea sickness and the sad demise of Cafe Rouge. Before this week's guest arrives there's also some No Seat Christopher Nolan verbals and Sam has a weirdly erotic dream….. Praise be that aforementioned guest Jimi Famurewa shows up in the nick of time to talk lockdown, making his mum happy, Kid and Play, what the role of a food critic looks like post-pandemic and what happens when one Googles themselves. There's also time to discuss the fall of ex-Lucky Peach Editor Peter Meehan*, the hopefully inevitable fall of toxic food world twat energy culture and Jimi discusses what and where he feels his lane is in food writing. *To be clear, which this episode is not, (due to the loss of some audio to Zoom glitching), all three of us stand in complete sympathy and solidarity with anyone who had to deal with the grim sounding Peter Meehan. Listening back maybe it's not crystal clear but the part where I (Sam) said exactly that, has been lost to the digital ether and I wanted that to be made, if required, abundantly clear. Ta, and apologies for any confusion. This episode is sponsored by wine seat users dropwine.co.uk
In an episode that was stretched to unusual lengths by bubbly white wine, Mike and our guest John Falco talk about the coronavirus' continued impact on their businesses, sleeping on rugs, video game documentaries, John's participation in the Iraq surge, parenting, Peter Meehan, and how little either of them actually wanted to show up to record this podcast. Also, we tough lightly on what John does for a living (beer and pizza). For years, Peter Meehan was a mystery. As the New York Times’s "$25 and Under" columnist in the early 2000’s, he dined anonymously everywhere from Roberta’s to Momofuku Noodle Bar to hidden gems like Uminoie in the East Village. As an author of cookbooks and while helping run the show at Lucky Peach magazine (RIP), he avoided cameras out of some combination of annoyance and muscle memory. We caught up with him to discuss his upcoming barbecue cookbook, the terror of doing food TV, and the legacy (and life after) Lucky Peach.Later on the episode, we talked to Julia Sherman, the author of Salad for President, about the unexpected intersections between art and salad.
This past weekend, Los Angeles Times restaurant critic Jonathan Gold died at the age of 57. Robert Sietsema, Peter Meehan, and Meghan McCarron share some stories and discuss the legacy of the legendary food writer. Hosted by: Amanda Kludt and Daniel Geneen. David Chang's series on Netflix sparks an unlikely conversation encompassing politics, culture and identity. It also has Chang, food critic Peter Meehan, and other chefs in beautiful locations around the world eating fantastic looking meals. So far, so Bourdain. But this show organically develops into a far more wide-ranging discussion - and Stevie and Emmet are fully on board. (so on board they took a break on their wedding anniversary to discuss). Also in this episode: Judas Priest Quitting Facebook Penny Dreadful And the charming film Pork Pie (which we reviewed in episode 13)
Ugly Delicious. Elgin and Paul check out #UglyDelicious: Ugly Delicious, a new documentary series from Netflix, produced by and starring Momofuku chef David Chang and New York Times food critic Peter Meehan. He is also the author of Lucky Peach’s debut cookbook, Lucky Peach Presents: 101 Easy Asian Recipes. He resides in Manhattan with his wife and their two daughters and shares his latest experiences at the quarterly publication and plus details surrounding the EATING OUT LOUD event in Los Angeles. An evening of performances, food, and drinks inspired by the content of Lucky Peach, hosted by Lucky Peach editors Peter Meehan and Chris Ying, the event consists of two parts: a series of readings from Lucky Peach at the Million Dollar Theater by David Chang, Roy Choi, Kim Gordon, Jonathan Gold, Amelia Gray, and Eric Wareheim, followed by a reception at the historic Grand Central Market. Unfortunately the event is sold out, but listen in for details on how to win tickets to the coveted event! A troupe of native New Yorkers (well we actually feel bad lying to you, one of them is from Connecticut), the quartet known as Loose Buttons was struck by the energy buzzing around The Big Apple at some point in their early adolescent years and channeled that inspiration into endless hours practicing in their parent’s garage. Loose Buttons have been together since 2012 and have played around New York City and Miami a heck of a lot. Three of them went to college in Miami to pursue careers as dubstep DJs, but eventually returned to their roots of indie rock and roll. The newest single “Thrill” came out in October and the band is planning to release their next EP in the Spring of 2016.
