Timmy Mallett, former DJ and 1980s children's TV presenter, is creating a social media storm, during a cycle tour around Northern Ireland, in tribute to his late brother, Martin who had Down's Syndrome. Timmy Mallett was a massive star on children's TV in the 1980s and 90s. He honed his zany style of presenting on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. Amongst his helpers were a teenage Chris Evans and the Today programme's Nick Robinson. He then went on to breakfast television where he presented the Wide Awake Club with Michaela Strachan and then Wacaday. A generation of children grew up watching him and his trusty foam mallet, Pinky Punky which he used to bonk competitors on the head when they stumbled or hesitated in his word association game Mallett's Mallet. Nowadays, he's swapped the Mallet for the artist's palette and is as successful at art as he was at children's TV presenting. At the age of 68, he's cycling round Northern Ireland, giving mini history lessons and tour guides on TikTok whilst painting scenes of his travels in memory of his late brother. Tony Michaelides has been described as a walking, talking, encyclopaedia of music. He's been described that way for good reason, because he's worked with everyone from David Bowie, to New Order to Take That. Tony worked in promotions and as a consultant in the music industry. He's also very well known in Manchester for his time at Piccadilly Radio, where his nickname was “Tony the Greek”. He describes himself as “an adopted yank, but always a Manc”. He now lives in the United States after the US government granted him a green card for services to music and the arts. In this episode, you'll hear some fantastic stories taken from his book “Moments That Rock”, about everyone from the Happy Mondays, to U2, Simply Red, James and the Stone Roses. ================================== Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. 'How ya doing? Your Disco King here to do his thing! I hope you have had a be-YOOTI-ful day. We are here to keep it that way!' Paul and Sean are delighted today to have a very special guest: British radio legend Andy Peebles - a life-long champion and friend (in every sense) of 10cc. Andy began his DJ-ing career in Bournemouth, before moving to Manchester to take up a residency at Hardrock, Rank’s huge and prestigious live venue and discotheque in Stretford, Manchester. After a stint with BBC Radio Manchester in the early 70s, he became one of the founding DJs on Piccadilly Radio a few years later. But most of us know him as a Radio One presenter, where he garnered a reputation for thoughtful interviews and sheer passion for music. Perhaps his greatest legacy is his famous and candid interview with John Lennon, taped just days before his death in 1980. He continues to broadcast to this day. We hope you enjoy this entertaining whistle-stop tour through Andy’s career, and his frequent crossing of paths with Eric, Lol, Kevin and particularly Graham. And did we mention that Andy was further immortalised by his cameo appearance on *that* triple album?
Bauer Radio’s Editor-in-Chief John Pickford talks to RadioToday as he celebrates 40 years since he first joined Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. Also includes David Lloyd’s Radio Moments. Processing by Ian Deeley. Voiceover by Hannah Patterson. Original music by Mcasso.
This is the story of the man whose wind-up calls were to set him up for becoming a nationally known broadcaster. In this hour of Radiomoments ‘Conversations’, Steve Penk tells of his nervous beginnings at a young Piccadilly Radio in Manchester, and of the last-minute negotiations as he chose his first London gig. He relates the full story of the famous Tony Blair wind-up call; and of how he picked up the reins painfully from Chris Evans at Virgin. Steve also opens up about radio ownership and the Revolution experience – and about his life beyond in creating the Wind Up Channel and Radio Dead. In his own words – this is the Steve Penk story. A fascinating interview from 1987 conducted by Piccadilly Radio's DJ Chris Tetley. This is one of my first mixes recorded in a studio. I’d just moved into Matt’s in Stetford and he kept getting burgled so I stored my decks at work. This was in the days when Piccadilly Radio was based in Piccadilly Plaza (Manchester). The commercial production studio was separate from the rest of Key103 and I was often working weekends uploading commericals... so of course it wasn’t long before I’d plugged my Technics into the desk.Anthony (‘Subbo’) and I would have a few beers, get stoned out the back and play tunes. With this session I learnt how digital editing could allow you to perfect a mix, restructuring songs as I wanted them, and also how prestigious it felt to have a mix burnt to CD - few people burnt CDs in 1995 as it was far too expensive. This mix spawned ideas that later became the Update 1 CDs.studio mix – Aug 95Billy Ray Martin – running around town – bt remixBilly Ray Martin – running around town – original mixMone – we can make it – joe t vanelli remixJodeci - freak – mk dubEBTG – missing – chris & james remixThe Original – I love you babySpace 2000 – do you wanna funk? – joe t vanelliDe’Lacy – hideaway – deep dish mixBrand New Heavies – back to love – gp mixMariah Carey – fantasty – morales dub44.4 MB AAC file 1288 kbps
