Elis and Producer Dave are fresh from taking breaths of the night DJ'ing. The only two people on planet Earth to become hipper as they age. But Mixmag has it that Elis spent most of it seated. Because that's what the top DJs do. Harris, Tong, Guetta, all from a seated position whilst sucking on Werther's Originals.Yes Elis got a little bit tired bless him and John simply isn't willing to let him forget it. Elsewhere there's 7 minutes of observational stand up which is hot to go to the nimblest comic, and just when you thought guff chat had tooted its last parp there's a hall of famer piece of correspondence. And if you root around there's also some lovely Mallett stuff and two big daddy Mad Dads amidst some top drawer listener generated content. To get in touch with your own gold standard contributions then get it to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp it on 07974 293 022 if you like your messaging a little fruitier.

Huge news in Elis and John towers today, for Producer Dave bumped into the man, the myth, the Solero supper himself, Mr Tim Davie. Could he use this opportunity to pitch a brand new true crime podcast about dupes from Stockport who get sold fake shoes? Well that commission's ripe for the taking if there's a Magnum that goes the other way.Alongside yet more DG discussion Elis really thinks he should get into juggling, for some inexplicable reason, and we have a game which makes the greatest use of a beat since the invention of the bass drum. To get in touch with the boys send anything you've got to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk or WhatsApp on 07974 293 022.
The Retired Athlete's Club is one of the more clever ideas I've heard in a long time. McKenzie Mallett, a former captain of Salem State University Women's hockey team has come up with a new clothing apparel for those high school and college athletes that are officially done playing their sports after their senior seasons. This is a really great idea and I think she'll have much success with it. Check out this awesome episode.
Folk rockers The Mallett Brothers are back with a new album on April 4 called “Higher up in the Hills.” Luke and Will Mallett joined us on Roots Music Rambler this week to talk about the album, the first couple of singles from it, 15-years of making it in independent music without leaving their home state of Maine and more. The brothers who front the band are actually from folk music royalty. Their father, David Mallett, is a well-known folk singer who wrote “The Garden Song” popluarized by Pete Seeger, John Denver and others. We talked about growing up around their famous dad, his impact on their music, and collaborations with him over the years. The Mallett Brothers also share the story behind another fun collaboration – with legendary keyboardist Chuck Leavell on his PBS series “America's Forests with Chuck Leavell.” Falls also kicks off the episode with perhaps the most impassioned rant he's ever embarked upon, pleading with people to stop complaining about cross-genre artists and the hate toward specific sub-genres of music. It's worth the listen. Frank and Falls also share their normal pickin' the grinnin' picks for the week. Download the episode and subscribe at rootsmusicrambler.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Sky City says a February opening date for its International Convention Centre is prudent. The Centre was initially planned to open in 2020, but a major roof fire in 2019 - followed by the Covid-19 pandemic - set the project back substantially. Fletcher Building will now hand it over in June. Chief Operating Officer Callum Mallett says the next stage of commissioning and operational work will take several months.
This episode is particularly special as it features Lauren and Drew, who join us to honor the legacy of the late Ryan Mallett. Lauren, Ryan's sister, and Drew, a former Razorback player, share poignant memories and the charitable initiatives inspired by Ryan's life, including a heartfelt story of a softball game that became a tribute to his enduring spirit. We delve into the community-driven efforts that have emerged in the wake of Ryan's untimely passing, particularly the foundation established to offer free sports camps for Arkansas youth. These camps aim to alleviate financial burdens and impart essential life skills through team sports. By collaborating with local schools, the foundation also helps high school students meet community service requirements, fostering a sense of unity and mutual support. The highlight of these efforts is the "Pros versus Joes" celebrity flag football fundraiser, set to expand its reach beyond Arkansas into Texas and New England.Listeners can anticipate an engaging conversation about the upcoming event at Farmington High School, a day filled with friendly competition and community bonding. We'll discuss the logistics, from the opening of the gates to the enticing auction items available, all set against the backdrop of a promising weather forecast. With professional athletes mingling with amateur players and fans having the chance to meet their sports heroes, the event promises to be a fitting tribute to Ryan's legacy, furthering his influence on young athletes and fans in a significant way.Website: www.mallettfamilyfoundation.comAuction: https://givebutter.com/c/TOwDVx/auctionTickets: https://givebutter.com/c/TOwDVx

The Dallas Cowboys are offering a pizza burger featuring a 16 oz Angus patty nestled between two pepperoni pizzas as buns, topped with lettuce, tomato, mozzarella, and marinara sauce. They're also serving a Fritos Sundae with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, sugar, caramel, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and Fritos. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts introduced "The Ringer" corn dog, coated in honey and rolled in blue Taki crumbs, along with S'mores Fries—sweet potato fries drizzled with chocolate hazelnut sauce, toasted marshmallow, and graham cracker crumble. Remember When: Mississippi Hunters Land HUGE Gator in Storm Looking back on adventurous hunts, do you remember this one? Reported about back in 2023 by Mississippi Clarion-Ledger: A Mississippi alligator hunter, Kyle Mallett of St. Martin, recently captured a 13-foot, 650-pound alligator amid a stormy night on his last hunt of the season. After a frustrating evening with no big catches and a thunderstorm forcing him off the water, Mallett returned to the Pascagoula River marsh with his hunting partner, Matthew Brooks of Biloxi. While clearing grass tangled in the boat's propeller, Mallett was startled when the massive alligator surfaced just three feet from his boat. The water was shallow and clear, allowing him to hook the alligator with a fishing rod. Despite the gator taking off and the challenge of heavy rain, Mallett, with help from his cousin Jarrod Davis and his team, eventually managed to secure and reel in the gator. After a 30-minute struggle to get the giant into the boat, they finally succeeded. The alligator weighed 650 pounds and measured 13 feet, 3 inches, making it one of the largest caught this year. According to Amazon: "The benign, candle-carrying ghost of Mayor Levi Manning is reported to roam the halls of Manning House, while a frightening presence is said to lurk in the projectionist room at the Fox Theatre. In Room 242 of the Hotel Congress, guests have described a woman in white sitting at the end of the bed, while other spirits have been spotted in the halls. A conversation recorded in Providence, Rhode Island with longtime brewmaster John Mallett, formerly of Bells Brewery who is currently happily retired. It's a chat about brewery safety, building recipes, and insight from a career that impacted so many. Last week I was in Rhode Island to help judge the inaugural Rhode Worthy Beer Cup. It was happening along side the state brewer's guild conference. John Mallett, the long-time Bells Brewery brewer and production manager was giving the keynote. He's an Ocean State Native, and was kind enough to take some time to cross the road after his talk and sit down with me for a conversation at the newly opened Buttonwoods Brewery location. If you don't know Mallett, maybe you've been living under a rock. In addition to his work at Bells, which spanned more than 20 years, helping develop and shepherd many of the brands beloved beers to market, he's also the author of Malt: A Practical Guide from Field to Brewhouse (released by the Brewers Publications in 2014). He served on many boards and technical committees, including the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, Brewers Association, Hop Quality Group – of which he was a founder - and American Malting Barley Association.Mallett retired a few years ago but that doesn't mean he doesn't have anything left to share or teach. He is passionate about brewery safety, and finding ways to bring creativy, knowledge, and passion to an industry that he has loved for so long. SkyCity says a system failure meant they went undetected - and it's committed to improving its harm minimisation technology. Chief Operating Officer Callum Mallett says they'll close the casino for five days to work with the Department of Internal Affairs on how to improve. Timmy Mallett, former DJ and 1980s children's TV presenter, is creating a social media storm, during a cycle tour around Northern Ireland, in tribute to his late brother, Martin who had Down's Syndrome. Timmy Mallett was a massive star on children's TV in the 1980s and 90s. He honed his zany style of presenting on Piccadilly Radio in Manchester. Amongst his helpers were a teenage Chris Evans and the Today programme's Nick Robinson. He then went on to breakfast television where he presented the Wide Awake Club with Michaela Strachan and then Wacaday. A generation of children grew up watching him and his trusty foam mallet, Pinky Punky which he used to bonk competitors on the head when they stumbled or hesitated in his word association game Mallett's Mallet. Nowadays, he's swapped the Mallet for the artist's palette and is as successful at art as he was at children's TV presenting. At the age of 68, he's cycling round Northern Ireland, giving mini history lessons and tour guides on TikTok whilst painting scenes of his travels in memory of his late brother. Now a senior cleric, she has co-authored a report on how the Church of England should make amends for its historic financial involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, which has attracted praise from some and criticism from others.Stephen Smith talks to those who know Mallett best, exploring how her life has shaped her approach to music, ministry, and racial justice.Presenter: Stephen Smith Producer: Nathan Gower Production team: Debbie Richford, Drew Hyndman Editor: Tom Bigwood Programme Coordinators: Sabine Schereck, Maria Ogundele Sound Engineer: Rod Farquhar

Stefania Mallett, co-founder and former CEO of ezCater, shares her entrepreneurial journey and insights into effective board governance. She emphasizes the importance of board composition, highlighting the pivotal role of understanding marketplaces and the nuances of investor-backed boards. Stefania also discusses the crucial dynamic between CEOs and board chairs, the challenges in communicating complex business scenarios to board members and the critical process of succession planning. We love our listeners! Drop us a line or give us guest suggestions here. Big Ideas/Thoughts/Quotes: On Relationship Between Board and CEO/Management in Investment Backed Companies “.. it's kind of like grandparents. The board cares intensely, but in the end, they hand the baby back and you - the CEO and/or the managing team - you're the parents and you have to deal with all of the colicky moments and all of the ups and downs and all of the difficulties and so much more about what's going on inside the company.” “It doesn't matter how effective a communicator you are, having been on both sides, I can tell you that the most well-intentioned, most transparent, most forthcoming CEO cannot possibly convey to the board everything that the management team knows.” Origin Story of ezCater and Early Board “..we closed [a company I had help found] down on a Thursday. I went home and got drunk on the weekend and on Monday we started the business that turned into ezCater, which was helping make food appear for business meetings[!]” “Don't bring people onto your board who don't understand your business” Evolution of the Board through ezCater's Journey and role of a Board Chair “we started to get more professional board members who understood our business. We lucked into someone [Chris Cuddy] at Launchpad, who understood marketplace businesses, not specifically in the catering food for work business, but he came out of online travel [marketplace]. It turns out one marketplace is a lot more like another marketplace” “we lucked into someone who became our board chair and $425 million of venture capital funding from some of the biggest venture companies on the planet later, we are now thousands of times the size we were when we first met this Chris” I don't have a velvet hammer as much as I'm impatient. Impatience is the mother of invention, and so when I watch Chris Cuddy our board chair do his work I think, "Oh my God, that's just better." He's more patient. He listens. It doesn't really take longer. It feels like a circuitous path to the answer, but it's actually about the same length of time as I would have taken with less angst, less fireworks. The founder and CEO are not necessarily the best board chairs.” Transition of CEO for ezCater “the company was ready, and I was ready, and I went to the board meeting a few weeks later and I said, "Guys, I got to go. It's time.” “We launched a search and found my successor. Because of internal discussions, because of the board's hesitation, because whatever, we ended up taking a year. We had the time, I mean it wasn't like running, screaming for the exits, and I wasn't doing a terrible job. My team was doing a super job” “When this person started, now it's three months, four months, and it's quite clear, he has experience at the 10X level. He brings in knowledge, not just "I think we should try this,"” Joe: “You have touched upon series of things that apparently apply to investor-backed companies and startups that also apply to every for-profit company, whether private or public. The importance of the chair, the importance of learning to share power - every CEO has to learn it, every founder has to learn it. Every investor, whether it's a startup or not, has to learn it.” Effectiveness as a Board Member and Over-boarding “One of the very best board members I have had in my entire career in all the companies that I've been on or on all boards I've chaired or that I've been on the board is a guy who, when I did his reference checks for him people raved about him and when I would ask, so what's wrong with the guy? Almost every one of them said ‘he's on too many boards.' ” “It's important to remember that the board gives you a couple of things that you can't get anywhere else. One is the cadence of every X weeks or X months, you have to report to these people…. There's something about that regular cadence of having to report, that is very valuable.” The second thing you get from them is perspective. If they are good board members, they bring you a portfolio perspective. You live your life as a portfolio. You can only do one company at a time. Even more industrious and somehow energetic entrepreneurs than I do are involved in two startups at a time, but it's rare. But these people who are on your board are involved in 10 startups right now, or 10 companies at your stage right now and have seen many others, and so they can say to you, "Listen, I saw people try exactly what you tried and here's what happened to them," and you can save a bunch of time.”

As Razorback nation mourns the unexpected and tragic loss of Ryan Mallett, one of the all-time great quarterbacks in school history, we're digging into the vault and bringing back one of our favorite Hog Pod episodes. Original Episode Synopsis: Ryan Mallett is one of the best players in Razorback history. But his college career didn't start with the Razorbacks and from his perspective, there was a good reason why. Mallett's talent was evident at a young age. Michigan was the first to take notice and eventually earned Mallett's commitment, but after the legendary Lloyd Carr retired, Mallett's boyhood dream of becoming a Hog began to look like more of a reality. After sitting out a year because of transfer rules, it became clear that Ryan Mallett was a perfect fit for head coach Bobby Petrino. And in 2010, Arkansas made its first-ever BCS bowl appearance. Though there were ups and downs, missteps and misunderstandings. Ryan Mallett gave Arkansas some of its best SEC memories, culminating as an NFL starter and eight year league veteran.
