Mike Sweeney started writing for Conan O'Brien 30 years ago and has been right there by his side ever since. His work has fueled not only the host's two big late-night shows—with a tumultuous stint on the ‘Tonight Show' in between—but also his recent gig hosting the Oscars and his newest project, the travel show ‘Conan O'Brien Must Go,' which arrives Thursday, May 8 on Max. In this episode, Sweeney discusses this particularly momentous time in O'Brien's career, including how Donald Trump's takeover of the Kennedy Center threatened to derail his acceptance of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor (streaming Sunday, May 4 on Netflix). Instead, like with so much of their other work together, Sweeney and O'Brien found a way to marry a hopeful outlook on the world with deeply silly jokes. Leaving the structured world of the military for the uncertainty of civilian life can be a daunting task. In this episode of the PCS to Corporate America Podcast, I speak with Mike Sweeney, a former Army junior military officer (JMO) who successfully navigated this transition over 20 years ago. Mike shares his insights and experiences on how defining goals, embracing preparation, and learning lead to career success. He offers invaluable advice to those currently preparing for their own transition. The Importance of Preparation Mike emphasizes the importance of preparation, particularly when it comes to interviewing. Drawing parallels to the meticulous practice routine of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, Mike stresses the need for JMOs to practice and rehearse their interview responses and specifically highlights the need to master the answer to "Tell me about yourself.” This preparation helps build confidence and allows one to be authentic in the interview. Defining Your "Good Employment Offer" Beyond acing interviews, Mike encourages JMOs to define what constitutes a "good offer" for them. Rather than solely focusing on salary, he suggests considering factors like company culture, values, learning opportunities, team dynamics, and work-life balance. This personalized approach helps ensure alignment between individual aspirations and the chosen career path. Today, as a Leadership Coach, Mike encourages his clients to think about their career opportunities similarly. Embracing Lifelong Learning A key theme throughout the conversation with Mike is the importance of continuous learning and development. Mike is an avid reader and champions reading as a way to gain new perspectives, develop leadership skills, and cultivate a reflective mindset. He also says that, unlike when he and I transitioned 20+ years ago, to use other mediums like podcasts and videos for learning and self-development. The key is to be intentional and directed in consuming information that fosters growth. Mike's career is an excellent example of a successful transition from military to civilian life. His emphasis on preparation, thoughtful decision-making, and continuous learning provides valuable guidance for current JMOs navigating this significant life change. By engaging with resources like those offered by Cameron-Brooks and embracing a mindset of continuous growth, individuals can confidently embark on their post-military careers. Thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoy the podcast! To stay connected, we encourage you to check out our website and YouTube Channel and follow us on LinkedIn. In this captivating second act with Mike Sweeney, I was treated to a treasure trove of hard-earned wisdom. Mike's journey from Army officer to corporate leader, and through the choppy waters of divorce and fatherhood, is nothing short of remarkable. I couldn't help but chuckle as he recounted how a forklift driver's casual "Oh well" became a pivotal moment in his leadership philosophy. It's fascinating how Mike evolved from a command-and-conquer approach to one of connection and inspiration, showcasing the power of emotional intelligence in both professional and personal spheres. As we delved into his experiences with divorce and co-parenting, I was struck by Mike's candid reflections on balancing societal expectations with personal growth. Our conversation was a rich exploration of leadership, fatherhood, and self-discovery that left me pondering the importance of embracing both masculine and feminine energies. Mike's parting wisdom? Sometimes, when life throws you a curveball, it's okay to just say "Oh well" and roll with it.Bio by Mike: In my career, I've applied my love of learning to coaching leaders, accelerating organizational change, and building high performing teams – often through digital learning. I enjoy the challenge of new industries so I can discover techniques that work everywhere.• Digital learning – I started with flip phone videos to help employees make label changes easier. This grew to personalized learning experience platforms, virtual facilitation, social learning, xAPI learning analytics, and content development in eLearning, video, simulation, and all the fun formats.• Coaching leaders – I've developed coaching skills through a Master's in organizational psychology, courses on positive psychology and appreciative inquiry, and the full curriculum from the Co-Active Training Institute. Nothing thrills me more than supporting people as they learn the craft of leadership. • Accelerating organizational change – I have experience leading large transformational change efforts – mixing new technology with behavior change. After years of studying change, I've found ways to weave the people side of change into projects. The outcomes have been higher engagement, faster change, and better results.• Building high performing teams – Working with a diverse group of people is where the magic happens. I know my strengths (and where I'm less good) and look for complementary all-stars to do great work together. Today I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Mike Sweeney, a Boston-born "country mouse," Army veteran, and father. Our conversation traced Mike's remarkable journey from an emotionally limited young man to a more self-aware adult. We explored his privileged yet conflicted childhood, delved into his transformative military experience, and discussed the profound impact fatherhood has had on his life and perspective. Mike's story illuminates the challenges and rewards of emotional growth, leadership, and finding purpose; from learning hard lessons in the Army to discovering new depths of empathy as a father to daughters, Mike's experiences offer valuable insights for any man grappling with personal development. Mike's ability to blend raw honesty, practical wisdom, and thought-provoking reflection is a powerful one, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Looking forward to Act 2, Mike!Bio by Mike: In my career, I've applied my love of learning to coaching leaders, accelerating organizational change, and building high performing teams – often through digital learning. On today's episode, I talk to Emmy-winning comedy writer Mike Sweeney. Since childhood, Mike wanted to be in showbiz, but family issues prevented him from pursuing stand-up until his late 20s. Stand-up led to writing on shows like Short Attention Span Theater and Politically Incorrect, and in 1995, he joined the writing staff of the then two-year-old Late Night with Conan O'Brien. In 2002, Mike became the head writer for Conan and stayed with the show through its transition to the Tonight Show in 2009 and then after that, to the TBS version, which ended in 2020. Since then, Mike has stayed busy doing many things, among them working as the head writer for That's My Time with David Letterman and as a producer on Conan Without Borders.
