This week, Dave Castillo of St. Vitus Bar, Primitive Weapons, and White Widows Pact calls into the hole! heavyholepodcast.com Voicemail - 631 -837 - 3274
This week's guest dreamed of having a bar where his favorite bands could play, and he made it happen beyond anyone's expectations. Saint Vitus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn is not only a popular neighborhood bar, it hosts bands that no other club their size would ever manage to land. In our interview, we talk about Arty's teen years as a metalhead on Long Island, seeing the world in iconic hardcore bands like Mind Over Matter, and what led him to become the proprietor of multiple venues in NYC. We're ending this series on a high note, so enjoy this episode, and maybe we'll see you again in the future. Thanks to all of our listeners for a great run. What a delightful dive into the Long Island hardcore scene with (prog-loving) scenester Artie Shepherd. Artie has been part of the LIHC scene since the beginning, playing in Mind Over Matter (and a bunch of other bands), his band Primitive Weapons with past-guest (and co-owner of Saint Vitus, Chris Enriquez). We talked about Artie's musical past, the decision to open a bar and venue, running a live music venue during a pandemic, touring, launching Wreck-Age records, Yes, Rush, and a whole bunch of other shit. Artie has stories for days, and we could probably easily do another 2.5 hours some day...hopefully in person next time. This week we’re joined by my old friend David Castillo a man who wears many hats: promoter, one of the main men at Saint Vitus, vocalist in several bands including Primitive Weapons, White Widows Pact and now his one-man electronic tour de force Confines. Arty Shepherd, co-owner of the infamous Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn. Arty was part of the booming Long Island hardcore scene of the '90s. He has toured extensively with a host of hardcore, post-hardcore and heavy bands, including Mind Over Matter, Errortype II, Instruction, Gay For Johnny Depp, Unwed, God Fires Man, and Primitive Weapons. Join us for tales from the road, recording with Bob Ezrin, the Nirvana 'reunion' and a spot on Jimmy Iovine imitation. God truly doesn't care.

Hello, Hello and welcome my Cave Dweller Community. As you all know, my name is Anthony, and I am your host of The Neanderthal Mind. Joining me on today's episode is Joe Lawlor, Primitive Weapons and Tool Maker. Neanderthal Joe, as he is known by His Community, is also a Primitive designer of Jewelry, Clothing and Leather tote bags as well as hide working furs for everyday uses. Neanderthal Joe is well versed and well-polished in the Levallois Style of Flint knapping, common among Mousterian Neanderthal Sites. He creates all of his designs using the Primitive Neanderthal Techniques of Hammer Stone, Bone Hammer, Horsehair, Milkweed Fiber, Pine pitch and good ole wood whittling. You can check all of his creations on His Facebook Shop, Neanderthal Joe's Shop. I will have all his Social Media Homes listed in the Show Notes. Neanderthal Joe will be joining us for two episodes. I had to break it up into two episodes due to so much awesome content, knowledge and history of Primitive Tools, weapons, jewelry and clothing that Neanderthal Joe throws down during our Hour plus conversation. We also touch on when and why Neanderthal Joe got into Flint Knapping, and what started his love for Neanderthals, on a weekend stay with his Gram and they wanted to go to one of the Local (Ontario Canada) Museums. So, without further ado, Join me and Neanderthal Joe in a sit down conversation about Primitive Life and the tools, weapons and articles made of fur and hide that helped our Ancestors survive millions of years, so, let's get this wheel rolling my Cave Dweller Community. The Hardwood Boys discuss primitive weapons and Goonies.
Way back on Episode 43, Mario and Sarah Quintero of the three piece band "Spotlights" were the guests on the show. So, my former co-host John Lamacchia put me in touch with the drummer for "Spotlights", my guest on Episode 151 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace Podcast... Chris Enriquez. Chris also works for "Revolver Magazine", has played in "Primitive Weapons", filled in on drums for "Beyond" and "Shai Hulud" and now plays guitar in a new hardcore project called "Total Meltdown". His main band, "Spotlights" will be doing a two week run on tour with "Faith No More" and "Korn". We talk about his new band and stepping out from behind the drums and doing something out of his wheelhouse as well as his job at "Revolver". I had never formally met him until the night this was recorded and it couldn't have went better. Super nice guy and an unbelievably talented musician. Enjoy.
WMU 212 is known for a few things, acreages, ranches, and very large elk herds. The herds are well over the province's population objective and so they offer plenty of opportunity to hunters. Mike and John sit down and discuss Mike's antlerless elk hunt in 212, which happened to be in some of the coldest weather we have seen this winter. Hope you enjoy this episode. The measles outbreak continues to grow as new cases are identified. According to the city health department, there have been 466 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since September, and New York is a major contributor to the nationwide total of 764 cases, the highest number in 25 years. Within the city, Orthodox Jewish communities are hardest hit due to a combination of unvaccinated individuals and travelers returning from Israel, where there has been an outbreak of measles since last year. In the city health department data, Williamsburg has the highest total number of cases, at 379, and has added 31 new cases just in the previous week. The city has also carried through with restrictions outlined in an official health department declaration from last month, closing multiple schools and citing more than 80 individuals for failing to show proof of vaccination or to obtain a new vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. 142 years ago on May 8, 1877 — The first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is held in Manhattan 170 years ago on May 10, 1849 — A rivalry between Shakespearean actors fuels the Astor Place Riot at the Astor Opera House 136 years ago on May 12, 1883 — The Brooklyn Grays hold their first baseball game 116 years ago on May 15, 1903 — New York becomes the first state to require vehicle registration numbers 78 years ago on May 15, 1941 — Joe DiMaggio begins what would become his famous 56-game hitting streak City data on DSNY salt usage: In the DSNY data, storms are loosely grouped into numbered storms when road clearing takes place over multiple days. A deadly fire at the Frederick E. Samuel Apartments in Harlem claimed the lives of four children and two adults in the early-morning hours of May 8th. In what appears to have been an unfortunate accident, fire marshals found the cause to have been an unattended stove that was left lit. It was unknown whether the stove was being used for cooking, to heat the apartment, or if it was left lit for religious reasons, as was the case in a similar overnight fire in Midwood, Brooklyn in 2015 that killed seven children. Arty was in bands like Bad Trip, Mind Over Matter, World’s Fastest Car, Errortype: 11, Gay for Johnny Depp, Instruction, God Fires Man and Unwed. He’s been running a metal bar/venue called Saint Vitus, in Greenpoint Brooklyn that’s held some legendary shows since opening in 2011. He’s still playing music with a band called Primitive Weapons because obviously, he’s not giving up on the dream. Arty has seen a lot in music and with no punches pulled, tells it how it is. I loved talking to Artie about music and probably laughed more through this one than any other I’ve ever done. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Chris Enriquez came out to Long Island on Black Friday and sat with us to do what he loves to do, talk shop with friends. If you dont know Chris then you'll quickly find out that "talking shop" means talking about music. This is a topic that he lives and breathes. From his long, impressive musical career to his current day job, hes immersed in music in a way that would exhaust most people, but its the fuel and the outlet that keeps our guest most happy and growing as a person. Chris shared some personal stories about being in ON THE MIGHT OF PRINCES and the changes in himself and his outlook on being in a band that came from his time in OTMOP. He spoke on the untimely death of their singer Jason Rosenthal and what exactly happened with the reunions and everything leading up to the point. We got a lot of great stories about him working at REVOLVER magazine and LOUDWIRE and what its like to work at Award shows, do Podcast Interviews and balance being on both sides of the music industry. Chrs fills us in on all of his past bands including Gracer and Villa Vina, as well as bringing us up to speed on his current projects, PRIMITIVE WEAPONS and SPOTLIGHTS. And of course we had to find out what it was like to tour with the DEFTONES and THE REFUSED. Wether its sitting behind the drums in SPOTLIGHTS, or sitting behind a mic interviewing DAVE MUSTAINE, Chris is the type of person we love around here, a genuinely great guy, with a shitload of great stories to tell. So, sit back, relax and enjoy this episode. And just think, whatever it is that you're doing right now, Chris Enriquez is most likely busier than you. https://www.instagram.com/powerchild/ https://www.instagram.com/spotlightsmusic/ https://www.instagram.com/hardtimesnyc/ https://www.instagram.com/twinsunsdeli/ https://www.instagram.com/revolvermag/ https://www.instagram.com/Primitive_Weapons/
Arthur Shepherd plays in the band Primitive Weapons, but we barely even mention that. He also played in one of my favorite bands ever, Mind Over Matter and several other bands including Gay For Johnny Depp, Bad Trip, Error Type 11 & World's Fastest Car. He is co-owner of Saint Vitus, the iconic metal bar in Brooklyn, NY.
Here comes episode number #43 of Full Metal Hipster! Unfortunately I was plagued with illness and technical difficulties while recording this episode to I sound congested and the interview with Dave and Artie from Primitive Weapons got cut off at the beginning. What you hear at the beginning of the interview is the guys explaining why it took so long to release their second record, The Future off Death, after there 2012 debut. Everything ran smoothly after that. Anyway, enjoy the episode and I'll be back with you next week! If you’re an iTunes user, don’t forget to subscribe to Full Metal Hipster, and leave me some good reviews/5 star ratings for God’s sake! After months of trying to coordinate our schedules, I got to sit down with Arthur "Arty" Shepard, owner of NYC bar/venue Saint Vitus. Arty is also a longtime fixture in New York's music scene, having played in bands such as Mind Over Matter, Errortype: 11, Instruction, and currently in UnWed and Primitive Weapons. Arty and I sat in St. Vitus's basement and had an awesome conversation. Check it out! Music from Arty's bands. Jack Dagger aka 'The King of Fling’ should need no introduction to anyone in the throwing community who has not been living under a rock! However, just in case you have stumbled upon this episode and have not come across him before, he is quite simply the face of the modern impalement arts. Jack has been designated a ‘Living legend’ by the IKTHOF and for good reason; he has competed at the very highest level and has entertained audiences of thousands from the stage with his quick fire comedy act, punctuated by some of the most impressive throwing stunts in the world today. Jack has consulted to Hollywood stars, was the Primitive Weapons expert for all 5 series of History Channel’s ‘Hot Shots’ and is the voice of the National and World Championship Tournaments held each year in Austin, Texas. There is much more I could say about Jack but the interview speaks for itself; Jack is a gracious, fast-pace, razor-sharp character and we hit it off from minute one. In fact, we still had so much left to say at the end of this hour long conversation that Jack has kindly agreed to meet up again next week to carry on our in-depth conversation about just what it takes to rise to the top of the throwing arts world and stay there as an innovative and energising presence.
Happy New YearDave Castillo kicks off the 2014 Podcast Season with this episode. Aside from being the frontman of Primitive Weapons and White Widows Pact, he is the primary booking agent at St. Vitus Bar, one of the venues in post-CBGB's NYC that is keeping metal, punk and hardcore vital.
