Sam and I get a little testy again over the correct pronunciation of Concord VT. Jon stops in for a quick hello and tells us how he might have learned how to make mustard gas at school. A TN rep talks about killing ALL the kids in Palistine and snakes on a plane...sorta. Holleroo.co check it out.

On episode 122 of Talking Tacos the boys make a phone call. We tried a hot sauce this week that, honestly, we should have known better. It was called Mustard Gas, and it was basically what was used in the trenches during WWI. It was pure pain and fire. It was so bad that we called the store that we bought it from live on the podcast (they didn't answer). Special guest, Kevin Milazzo was the sacrificial lamb. We are also joined by special guest Ed, from Canon Fodder. We confirm that Britney Spears is indeed alive (so don't sue us), Taco Bell tries to free the term “Taco Tuesday” for the masses, Dave Brandt of “it ain't much but it's honest work meme fame” dies, AI explodes the Pentagon, and so much more.
Merchant Vessel, Cape Ray, will deploy to the Mediterranean sea with two Field Deployable Hydrolysis Systems, to neutralize chemical weapons in Syria.

All war is hell, but World War I was a rare breed of nightmarish, thanks in large part to the advances of the Industrial Revolution, and in particular, the advances in chemistry. In this short episode, Allison lays down a basic primer of the development of chlorine, phosgene, and other gases used on the battlefront, and then she tells a harrowing story of a Russian fortress to which the Germans laid siege with a balloon of chlorine destruction. What happened next is like something out of a George Romero flick. But the man who created these weapons, Fritz Haber, revolutionized the world in other key ways. So stick around and learn a little about that too! Romance? Suffragettes? WWI? Mustard Gas? BTS's Kim Seokjin and the magic of his "Super Tuna" (not a euphemism) I mean, if that's what we're talking in this month's episode on Susan Lanigan's "White Feathers" we better all strap in folks. To give the briefest of overviews, we've got: Ashling Murphy's murder and how we wish the other women killed last year (some as recently as 3 weeks ago) had the same public response What is a Bluestocking anyway "Finishing School" sounds like the most depressing thing in the world The Evil Stepmother - is this a trope simply because evil stepmothers ran rampant at one time? How much we love a complicated "horrible" character - and Eva's sister Grace is exactly one of those How familial support is different depending on what your parents experience is growing up - if someone grew up in poverty, is keeping you out of it enough for protection? And is a relationship with a teacher EVER okay? Tangents? Well I mean, obviously: Our shared anger over the murder of Ashling Murphy AND the other unmentioned women killed recently in Ireland Chloe's imaginary wedding to BTS's Jungkook (yes again) Seriously, when is BTS's Jin going to get a Pultizer for Super Tuna? Katie's Dad's car A whistlestop tour through Cliodhna's therapy schedule And the fact that Katie still isn't 100% sure what gaslighting is, no matter how many times she (incorrectly) uses the term That and the birth of the hashtag "WWI Germans are people too" It's all here in this month's Chick Lit 4 Life! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lc-lewis/message
James Nelson's “I Will Hold” tells the story of Clifton B. Cates. Cates began serving in the Marine Corps in June 1917. He deployed to France as part of the 6th Marine Regiment and participated in the Third Battle of Aisne, the Battle of Belleau Wood, and the Battle of Soissons. Cates was awarded the Navy Cross, two Distinguished Service Crosses, the Star, and Purple Heart for his service during World War One. He remained in the in Marine Corps and served during the Second World War where he lead the 1st Marine Regiment at Guadalcanal and then commanded the 4th Marine Division for the seizure of Tinian and Iwo Jima. Cates went on to serve as the nineteenth Commandant of the Marine Corps. He retired in 1954.
WE GOT A DO-OVER FOR LAST WEEK'S GOOF. Marc Brandi is a gentleman, scholar, and wicked funny musician who was nice enough to re-join us only a week after we forgot to push record on his first episode. We're forever in your debt Marc. Lowcaster is Marc's bay area heavy prog home, and he's also a permanent member of MG&R (formed by Michael Gallagher from Isis). We listened to lots of music and laughed a lot, and made fun of Jeff a lot.Band links and other stuff coming soon...we just wanted to get this one up ASAP!
On this episode, I sit down with my old pal Ralph Puma. Ralph is a writer, photographer, musician, and overall creative. We talk about Nashville, navigating our way down this rocky path of the digital world. Ralph's IG: @ralphpuma All Ralph's Links: https://linktr.ee/RalphPuma The opening song is Ralph singing “Mustard Gas and Roses” with the band Kill Me Kate. This is a previously unreleased, unmixed, and unmastered track. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/captaincooksfood/support
Well...57 episodes in and it finally happened...Jeff didn't press all the record buttons and our wonderful 2 hour chat with Marc Brandi from Lowcaster and Mustard Gas and Roses is gone...at least Marc's part is gone. We may be able to salvage the recording at a later date for comedy purposes...and a new episode with Marc will be up next Monday. This week, we reassembled the full Trevor Church interview from Episode 11-12. They never should have been 2 episodes, and far fewer people listened to Part 2. Ypres, 1917. The men are in the trenches. They write letters home to loved ones because they know what's coming; mustard gas. Only it's not a gas, it's a paste, a condiment! All is fair in love and war, and in this war, things are getting tasty. What if instead of a deadly gas, the Germans just dropped literal mustard on Allied forces? Colin manages to squeeze out some facts on mustard. Later, who lets the dogs out? The Allied forces, and Cody.Want to join the OUAT community? Have an idea for a change in history? I enjoy most of your podcasts, your updates on where life finds you. But, when you label something ‘female’ or ‘women’ on your podcasts, I am just extremely confused as to why you included any male voices on your latest podcast? I mean, truly, now, why must I endure male voices on a titled podcast to showcase female voices? Looking at all the musical recordings and references throughout history, surely the male ego has been adequately stroked to allow for women to, truly, be able to showcase their own musical abilities without treading on the chrystalline male ego? Sure, you, as a master musician in your own right, can do better, to research an entirely female show when it is marked as such? Yes, that was stroking your fragile male ego, because, after listening to you for so long, I’ve learned that you need such proddings. Simple male, will you never evolve to meet your female sister, ever?" Trip McCool emailed: "Marc, I want to thank you for playing "Gravy In The Grave". Both my wife and I had Grandfathers who fought in WWI and suffered poisoning from Mustard Gas. It was tough time for young Irish men who returned to a world with little to no support for the insanities of war. The ravages of the mind, body and soul. Add four children, the stock market crash, the great depression and 'the old boy' was off for the greener pastures of the mind. When my father said, "You don't know what growing up tough is." he meant it! "You want gravy with your spuds! Sweet Jesus will give ya Gravy in The Grave." Keep your guard up!" Welcome to Blackbird9's Breakfast Club's Wednesday Podcast , Hidden Hand Authorizes European Fumigation. Tonight we will examine the history between The Spanish American War of 1898 and World War I. In the First Hour we cover the chaotic events brought on by the teachings of the Frankfurt School Marxists. Their mission has always been to establish a Greater Israel ruled by globalism under the direction of Talmudic Noahide Law and at the same time force all other nations to surrender their independent sovereignty. In the second hour, Hidden Hand Authorizes European Fumigation, the host examined the history between The Spanish American War of 1898 and World War One beginning in 1914. From the earliest symbols for Water, Fire, Earth and Air, to the Homing Patterns of The Birds and The Bees, to bird symbolism in the Hebrew story of Noah, to the Poisons of Circe in Homer's Odyssey, to the discovery of Oxygen by Joseph Priestly in 1774, to Rothschild's use of the Carrier Pigeon in the rise of The Illuminati Hidden Hand, to the weaponizing of Mustard Gas by Cocaine Chemist Albert Niemann in 1860, to the invention of Dynamite by Alfred Nobel in 1867, to the First World Zionist Congress in 1897, to the rise of the Anarchist Assassin utilizing modern science in Marxist guerrilla warfare to decapitate the leadership of Christian Europe, to the rise of new mass media propaganda and psychological warfare, to the first recorded use of Chemical Weapons in war by The French in August 1914, the host examined how various technologies came together to decimate Europe in the first part of the Twentieth Century.

My old friend, rock music scribe and fellow musician J. Bennet joins us for a Classic Records Episode this week. Aside from reading J’s work in numerous music-related outlets such as Decibel, Revolver, Noisey and others, he is a member of Mustard Gas and Roses, Ides of Gemini and Black Mare. Guns n’ Roses’ debut album “Appetite for Destruction” has without a doubt earned its place in the pantheon of hard rock music. We both share some stories about our experiences with the record and how it crushed some of their “Hair Metal” contemporaries.Intro: “It’s So Easy”Outro: “Paradise City” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Sophia Chen of MRS Bulletin interviews Jared DeCoste, a researcher with the US army, about the research team's work to counter the effect of mustard gas. First, the researchers alter E. coli’s DNA to produce an abundance of the molecule protoporphyrin IX. They then mix the protoporphyrin IX with another type of molecule called a metal-organic framework, which then behaves like an absorbent microscopic sponge that detoxifies sulfur mustard, or mustard gas. Read the abstract in MRS Communications (doi: 10.1557/mrc.2019.22).TranscriptSOPHIA CHEN: Today we’re talking about new research out of the military on sulfur mustard, or as it’s more commonly known: mustard gas. Researchers are wondering, could you make some sort of clothing protection for a soldier that basically neutralizes the chemical upon contact? Jared DeCoste is a researcher with the US Army developing these smart uniforms. JARED DECOSTE: We’re doing a lot of research in this area, and we’re excited about the way it’s progressing, and hope to really see these materials being used, at least, in military garments in the coming years. SC: They’re working to develop a weaveable material containing the mustard-neutralizing molecules. But one of the molecules is extremely difficult to make from scratch. It’s called protoporphyrin IX. JD: It’s not a very symmetrical molecule. That means we can’t selectively make the functional groups and so forth to make that molecule. SC: So they needed a different strategy. Fortunately for them, protoporphyrin IX actually occurs a lot in nature. JD: Protoporphyrin IX is actually a precursor to heme, which is in our cells for absorbing oxygen, and a precursor for chlorophyll, which is used by plants to absorb light. SC: And it turns out that E. coli cells make protoporphyrin IX in trace amounts. So DeCoste and his team actually went into the E. coli’s DNA and altered it so that the bacteria would produce it in much larger quantities. Then, they mixed the protoporphyrin IX with another type of molecule called a metal-organic framework. These molecules basically act like absorbent microscopic sponges that other molecules like to stick to. JD: In a typical solid, the only thing to be exposed to be reacted with is the surface. Inherently if you have a sponge or large porous material, everything is a surface. Everything inside your metal-organic framework is readily available to any application you need, be it detoxification, detection, adsorption. SC: This sponge-protoporphyrin hybrid collectively is really good at detoxifying mustard gas. So far, DeCoste’s team is working with the material in powder form, but they’re also trying to figure out how to make it into fibers that can be weaved. But the work isn’t just about this one application to mustard gas, says DeCoste. It’s a demonstration of how genetically engineered cells can produce molecules that are difficult to make using conventional chemistry processes. This material would not have been possible without the modified E. coli. DeCoste thinks that this whole field, synthetic biology, has a lot of potential to benefit materials science. JD: The army and the military in general has a bunch of programs looking at ways to exploiting synthetic biology in general for new materials, making new molecules, and things along those lines. There’s a heavy investment in this area, and it’s a really hot topic right now that’s really started to come into its own. CHEN: This work was published in a recent issue of MRS Communications.
The killing of any human being is and should be labeled, an abject, horrible, despicable crime. Since Cain and Abel, at the dawn of time, there has not been any other way to describe the taking of someone's life in a deliberate and premeditated act. The killing of thousands is an atrocity and the killing of millions is a genocide. Our language has evolved with volumes, but the atrocity remains unchanged. There is another twist to this rather obvious and fault-free thinking about killing, and it resides in who is doing it. Whether it is an individual or a State, a person or a government. And then, what type of government: a democracy or a dictatorship, and where in the global pecking order is it ranked, at the top or bottom? With individuals, personal motives are usually recounted to understand the reasons behind a murder. Whereas with States and governments, interests and national security rationales are used to explain such acts. Governments are so much more overwhelming than individuals that even their killings are viewed with some sort of acceptance and even understanding. Especially if a war is afoot, or a combat is ongoing, or a battle is raging. With individuals only one poignant motive gets a pass: self-defense. However, States also use such approach with the notions of preemptive strike, of proactive defense of the homeland, and of ensuring the safety and security of citizens, at all costs. Ever wondered what the term 'at all costs' really means in this context? Never mind. The killing by a State is a mitigated affair and not all killings by all States are treated equally. On the one hand, killing by a winning State (North vs. South during the American Civil War, the Allies vs. the Axis in World I and II to take only few examples) is not only justified but glorified, in all of its methods whether dropping a nuclear bomb (called endearingly a ‘device') on a civilian population, or carpet bombing an entire city, or spraying Mustard Gas or some other new/old trick for killing fellow humans. On the other hand, losers do not have their killings justified nor their dead honored. All of their combat actions, even if in self-defense, are viewed with scorn, contemptuousness and dismay. The winners at Waterloo were revered and their military tactics taught for generations at war academies, but not the losers even if both were engaged in the same senseless, empirical war. Dead Japanese soldiers defending Okinawa were not given the same weigh in history as the GIs battling in the Pacific theater. I think you get the gist of it. So, if you are a State you need no motives but rather cold, rational interests to absolve your killing, and if you were a State you'd better be on the winning side for your murders to be viewed as the mere price for victory. Although that is not always true. The North Vietnamese won a war, but their actions were still vilified by Hollywood and accepted as conventional wisdom by popcorn-munching viewers all other the world. The nationalists in Algeria won the war of independence but there are no movies celebrating their feat. Is it an emerging market thing, versus developed markets? Without getting into any racial or ethnic arguments, who can kill with impunity and who cannot, remains the principal question. This dilemma has come to the fore with the horrible murder of Jamal Khashogi. Rewind few months before such tragic event and zoom in on the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal a former Soviet spy, and his daughter Yulia, in Salisbury by agents from the Russian GRU service. Go back a few years to the actual killing of Alexander Litvinenko in London, by the same Russian spy agency and the murder and cover-up of Sergei Magnitsky, a tax accountant, in a Moscow prison. In the aftermaths of these tragic events, why no one is questioning whether Putin should attend the G20 or address the UN General Assembly or be afforded the diplomatic cover and courtesy of a head of State?
Chemical weapons were one of the great horrors of the World War I battlefield. While different types of gases were used throughout the war, Mustard Gas was the most prominent and most effective chemical weapon in use by 1917. In this interview, Dr. Marble Sanders, Senior Historian of the U.S. Army Medical Department Office of Medical History, provides an overview of Mustard Gas and discusses the U.S. Army’s efforts to counter this weapon.
Dr Angela Thomas is an honorary senior lecturer within Child Life and Health at the University of Edinburgh. From First World War observations that mustard gas caused lymphoid tissue to dissolve and that folate seemed to accelerate the leukaemic process, carefully chosen chemicals were used to tackle leukaemia, sometimes with startling success. In the early days, some children were cured with this minimal therapy. As more drugs were discovered, so treatment intensified and more children were cured. The current challenge is to identify which children will do well with less treatment and who need more. This is where the new DNA technologies have proved so helpful to ensure that children with leukaemia have the maximum chance of cure with the minimum side effects. This lecture is part of the Medical Detectives, a series of public lectures that show how keen detective work is still essential for 21st century doctors. Recorded on 26 September 2013 in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre at the University of Edinburgh.
Molly Bloom talks about Aaron Sorkin directing "Molly's Game," about her journey from Olympic hopeful to running high-stakes poker games, and how she lost it all. In Pueblo, there’s a battle over how to get rid of a mustard gas stockpile. Handcuffed by voters, Pueblo jail officials can’t handle overcrowding. Colorado Mesa is home to the nation's top-ranked NCAA Division II softball team. And a bus-sized space station is plummeting to Earth. Can you see it?

I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] Preface You know---- Our way-back machine not only travels in time, but also in space so as we roll back 100 years, but are also going up to 10 thousand feet to get a high level view of what happened in 1917 and a glance into the future for what to expect for this upcoming year --- in the war the changed the world! [SOUND EFFECT] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [MUSIC TRANSITION] Looking back across 1917 from way up here, we can see: Wilson being sworn in as the President who promises to keep us out of the war, but events early in the year, pressure from the allies, aggressive and presumptuous actions by Germany, builds up by spring to a declaration of war. We see a massive rush to mobilize for war. We see our allies struggling with ever more massive and devastating loss of treasure and men - standing on the brink of devastation - and we see the eastern allie - Russia - go through two revolutions in one year - the first - which collapses the Tsarist government - the second - late in the year -- when Lenin and the bolsheviks take over and effectively drop Russia out of the war, This is to Germany’s great delight, anticipating the freeing up of massive resources -- with which Germany can deal the allies - a knock-out punch - in an upcoming spring. Let’s zoom down for a bit closer look at 1917 In late January, early February Germany resumes unrestricted submarine warfare - reneging on promises made to Wilson after the 1915 sinking of the Lusitania. The US severs diplomatic ties with Germany. In an attempt to draw the US into the fight, Britain passes along a secret telegram showing an offer by Germany to Mexico promising great rewards including Texas and New Mexico - if Mexico will toss in with Germany - and help take down the US. This does not sit well. By March with Germany attacking shipping everywhere - the Wilson asks congress to put Navy armaments and sailors aboard US merchant ships. Congress doesn’t go for it - so he issues an executive order to the same effect. While over in Russia - Revolution #1 - and Tsar Nicholas II abdicates.. By the end of march, Germany’s blatant aggression against the US gets Wilson’s cabinet to vote unanimously in favor of declaring war. April is big… On the 2nd Wilson delivers a war address to congress, and four days later - on April 6th -- congress votes to go to war. Over in Europe - French Commander in Chief General Robert Nivelle cranks up a strategic plan that is so flawed and costly in french soldiers lives --- it sets up a French army mutiny ---- NIvelle gets the boot - and the French forces come back online. In May America cranks up the war machine in a big way! Wilson appoints George Creel to head the Committee on Public Information.. Creating a historic government propaganda machine. Congress also passes the selective service act and all men between 18 and 32 have to register. Meanwhile - John J. Pershing is appointed to head of the American Expeditionary Force and goes over to France to assess the situation. June - To deal with strong war opposition at home - congress passes the US Espionage Act - A massive attacks on “freedom of speech” that makes {QUOTE) all false statements intended to interfere with the military forces of the country or to promote the success of its enemies (UNQUOTE) illegal. In other words - if you speak up against the draft or the war - you are going to prison. And people do. Same month, the first US troop arrive in France - but not yet to fight - they are there to prepare the way for our army. In July Pershing makes a request for an army of a million men - then just a few weeks later --- revises his request upwards to 3 million. On the fighting front, July, August and september see the first use of Mustard Gas on the battlefield --- and campaigns in the Belgic regions of Ypres and Passchendaele. America is busy building and equipping the largest fighting force of its young history. Money is raised, Industries are nationalized, units are mobilized, the population is galvanized by Mr. Creel and his minions. October marks a disastrous war effort for the italians at the battle of Caporetto --- and in November - Revolution #2 - the bolsheviks take over under Lenin and end the battle on the Eastern Front. November also sees the expanded use of a new war machine in the battlefield - the Tank! And at the end of the year - the Brits bring home a little holiday surprise as they finally turn around their struggle with the ottoman empire and defeat the Turks, taking Jerusalem in December. Wow - Ok… now we’re gonna zoom back up and look forward at 1918 from overview. Germany’s kaiserslacht, is their big offensive - hoping to deal the allies a death blow… it includes five major offensives over the spring and early summer; The allies lose ground - then gain it back with help of Americans who are coming online Things turn around --- and over the fall, the central powers admit defeat -- one by one so that in November, an armistice is declared… The fighting stops and now some of WWI’s most fascinating stories emerge - as the aftermath of the war, the negotiations, and America’s war cranked economy try to settle on and into a new world order. Wilson’s fourteen points It all actually starts this week. On January 8, 1918 President Woodrow Wilson addresses the U.S. Congress with what would later become known as his "Fourteen Points" the fundamental to America's War Aims. Inconceivably … up until now, there has been no explicit statement of war aims by any of the nation’s who engaged in this mad destruction. At his request, a team, led by Walter Lippmann --- and longtime Wilson advisor Colonel House generate a memorandum called “The War Aims and the Peace Terms it Suggests.” from which Wilson crafts one of his most important and influential speeches of his administration - the Fourteen Points. The first six enumerate the causes of world war, and urge: The elimination of secret treaties in favor of open agreements Free navigation of the seas Removal of all economic barriers and established equal trade between nations The reduction of armaments The adjustment of colonial claims and the self-determination of colonized populations in regard to their own sovereignty The evacuation of all Russian territory by the German armies The next seven proceed to rearrange the map of Europe, effectively eradicating the old imperial borders of specific territories and creating independent states. This included: the evacuation of Belgium, the release of French territory, (particularly Alsace-Lorraine), the readjustment of the frontiers of Italy into “clearly recognizable lines of nationality,” the autonomy of Austria-Hungary, the release of occupied territories in the Balkan states, the establishment of political and economic independence along “historically established lines of allegiance,” as well as access to the sea - for the Serbs Assured sovereignty of Turkey from the Ottoman empire, as well as the right of other nationalities to develop autonomy The establishment of an independent Polish state, with access to the sea And, finally, his fourteenth point -- the creation of a world organization that would provide a system of collective security for all nations - the foundations of the League of Nations. An auspicious beginning for 1918, establishing a world changing doctrine in what TRULY IS the war that changed the world! [poignant audio hit] All year, we will be bringing you with us,. on an incredible journey through these amazing times for our national and our global heritage. Dr. Lengel is an American military historian, Chief Historian of the White House Historical Association and sits on the US WWI Centennial Commission’s historical advisory board. Ed gives historians a good name! He is smart, well spoken, an author, and a devout storyteller. We look forward to his contributions to WW1 Centennial News THEN… State of the war front end of 1917: http://today-in-wwi.tumblr.com/post/169156769262/state-of-the-war-end-of-1917 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_G._Lengel [SOUND EFFECT] Great War Project Back with us now is Mike Shuster - former NPR correspondent and curator for the Great War Project Blog. Mike - first of all - welcome back - we missed you over the Holidays - so… your January post CRISIS FOR THE ALLIES is a great setup piece for 1918 - what are they facing as they roll into the new year? [Mike Shuster] Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. We also put some links in the Podcast notes to the articles we missed from Mike over the Holidays. A bunch of new episodes were released over the last weeks, including: Transcaucasia in World War One The Sopwith Snipe - WW1 Pilot’s Gear Machinations in the British High Command Inside the Rolls Royce Armoured Car German Anti Tank Units And more. To see their videos about WWI Follow the link in the podcast notes or search for “the great war” on youtube. Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/TheGreatWar World War One NOW It is time to fast forward into the present with WW1 Centennial News NOW - [SOUND EFFECT] this section is not about history, but rather - it explores what is happening now to commemorate the centennial of the War that changed the world! A century in the making For 2018 we are introducing a new segment - It’s called: A century in the making - America’s WW1 Memorial in Washington DC. As our regular listeners know, we are building a national WWI Memorial at Pershing Park in the capitol. It’s a big project. It’s complicated. It’s hard. It’s been a long time coming. So over the coming weeks, we are going to be bringing you along on an insider’s journey that explores this grand undertaking and adventure. The centerpiece of the memorial - located in this urban park - just two blocks from the White House - is planned as a massive bronze bas-relief sculpture that tells the story of both the human and the national experience of the war that changed the world. Joe Weishaar - our brilliant young visionary, who won the international design competition for this memorial -- brought in an incredibly talented artist and sculptor onto his team - Sabin Howard… a traditionally trained - modern classicist sculptor - Sabin has taken on the challenge of telling the American WWI story at scale, in bronze, and for posterity. Sabin Howard - Meeting Richard Taylor So we are going to kick off this series with an interesting story about how Sabin - the traditionalist - has gotten hooked up with Richard Taylor - a tech visionary who has helped Directors Peter Jackson and James Cameron manifest their visions for Lord of the Rings and Avatar…. Welcome, Sabin! Sabin, You are a traditionally trained sculptor - a Modern Classicist - you work with the human form - in a very traditional way - but for this project you are combining classic sculpture with some very high tech. How did that happen, and how are you using cutting edge technology in creating this master work for America? [SABIN INTERVIEW PART I] That was the first installment of “A century in the making - America’s WW1 Memorial in Washington DC” Next week, Sabin will tell us how he is integrating his traditional sketch and clay sculpture process with 3D imaging, programmable milling and additive manufacturing technologies to literally cut years into months for the test / iterate / and retest process in creating a maquette - a 9 foot manifestation of the sculpture. Only YOU can build this memorial “A century in the making” has another part to it that is unique for our weekly podcast. You are more involved in this project than you may realize. Congress - who authorized this memorial - made it the LAW that the National WWI memorial has to be built with individual and corporate funding - no government funding allowed! Only you can build this memorial -- So I’m going to be asking you to go to WW1CC.org/memorial --- to help honor the memory of those who shaped the world we enjoy today -- with their honest and genuine commitment to our American ideals --- and their personal sacrifice of effort and blood - Now Wer’e not asking you to jump into a bunker with mud and lice ---- all we are asking you to do is to go to wwicc.org/memorial or just pick up your cell phone - heck- it’s probably in you hand right now! Go to your texting app and text the letters ww1 to the number 91999. You can give any amount - Give once or “subscribe to the project” with a monthly gift === because you see - this really IS America’s WWI Memorial. Thank you - link:http://www.sabinhoward.com/WW1cc/ https://www.theepochtimes.com/the-next-step-in-a-soldiers-journey_2397769.html https://fineartconnoisseur.com/ www.ww1cc.org/memorial Events As we enter 2018, many commemorations, both big and small, are coming up to remember and honor the service of America and Americans during WW1. You’ll find many of these in the U.S. National WW1 Centennial Events Register at ww1cc.org/events. There are events all across the US and we are now beginning to add key events from abroad as well. On any given day you’ll find literally dozens of WWI related events listed - small, local commemorations and large, international ones. The register is America’s official record of commemorations of the centennial of WWI And you can add your OWN WWI centennial event to the register - with the big red SUBMIT MY EVENT button on the page - even including livestream and social media events. And finally, we wanted to share with you that the American Battle Monuments Commission has published its upcoming commemorative events in France and Belgium. The link to that calendar is included in the podcast notes. This is the grand evolution of the Armored car, and every side in the conflict tried to create an effective machine. but the British beat everyone to the punch with their Landship, premiering the Mark I in September, 1916. Until then - this was a new secret weapon! The machines were called "tanks" in a ruse describing the big metal things as "water carriers," supposedly for use on the Mesopotamian Front. So in conversation -- the engineers referred to them as "water tanks" or, simply, "tanks." Interestingly, the British Landships Committee even decided to change its name for the same secretive reason, renaming itself the Tank Supply Committee. By the time the machines rolled over the fields of Cambrai in the winter of 1917, not only did the tanks get stuck - but so did the name… no one went for the name land ships - they were simply known then and are still today --- as Tanks -- this week’s word for Speaking WW1. See the podcast notes to learn more! link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_tank Education Interview with Dr. Libby O’Connell In our Education section -- As we tell every week in our closing - bringing the lessons of WWI into the classroom is one of the Commission’s prime goals - and here to tell us more about the Commission’s education program is Commissioner Dr. Libby O’Connell. Welcome, Libby! [greetings] To start, could you tell us a bit about the education initiative at the commission? What’s happening now and what are the goals for 2018? Libby - I understand you are now tying the education program to the Memorial program - how does that work? Thanks so much for being on the show again! Dr. Libby O’Connell, World War One Centennial Commissioner, historian and author. Learn more about the education program at ww1cc.org/edu or by following the link in the podcast notes. link:http://www.worldwar1centennial.org/educate-home.html 100 Cities/100 Memorials [SOUND EFFECT Moving on to our 100 Cities / 100 Memorials segment about the $200,000 matching grant challenge to rescue and focus on our local WWI memorials. This coming Monday - January 15, 2018 - the submission period for the second and final round of grant application-- closes. Then we will start the process of selecting the second 50 Awardees to round out the 100 awardees. Check the podcast notes for a link to the program or go to ww1cc.org/100memorials. He is here to tell us more about the history of chaplains in the armed forces and their special role during World War One. Welcome, Dr. Boyd! Dr. Boyd, just to start us off -- What IS a chaplain and what is their role in the military? In WW1- we suddenly had an army - and it was made up of a very diverse group of soldiers - Was any attention given to the increasing diversity of the troops? There are many stories about the chaplains of World War 1-- does any one in particular stand out to you? Do you have a favorite? Thank you so much for joining us. Dr. John Boyd is the Historian for the United States Army Chaplain Corps. Learn more about chaplains in the military by following the links in the podcast notes. In articles and posts-- from our rapidly growing website at ww1cc.org -this week, this week there is an article about the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) - Now they have created a remarkable new online exhibit, "American Women Physicians in World War I". When the United States entered the war in 1917, women physicians numbered less than 5% of all doctors. Many were eager for the chance to serve their country. But when the Army Surgeon General sent out a call for physicians to serve in the Medical Corps, the women who applied were rejected. Women physician leaders across the country protested this decision and petitioned the government, but the War Department didn’t budge. Despite the stance of the Government, women physicians found ways to participate. Some became civilian contract surgeons in the U.S. Army or served with the French Army. Others volunteered with humanitarian relief organizations. Learn about this amazing story and women physician’s contributions and legacy in WWI by reading the article or by visiting the online exhibit using the links in the podcast notes. The exhibition has been touring the country for the last year and is on view at the Frist through January 21st. The exhibit includes 140 works in all kinds of media, including the monumentally large John Singer Sargeant piece -- Gassed. Frist Center curators and directorial staff responded to our questions about the show, about the war, and about impact on the local region. Read the interview by following the link in the podcast notes. [Katherine Akey] Hi Theo! Follow up to the Halifax Explosion Happy New Year, everyone! We’re glad to be back. Before we broke for the holidays in December, we talked a fair amount about the disastrous Halifax explosion of 1917. Recently, we shared an article on our Facebook page with some interesting contemporary news about that very incident. The article outlines the discovery by a Canadian arborist of some odd material lodged in a large pine tree near Halifax -- debris from the explosion 100 years ago. Shards of unidentified flying objects got lodged into the city’s canopy when the explosion occurred and to this day, lumber mills as far as the southern United States still don’t dare touch logs from Halifax, knowing some hidden metal artifact could wreck their machinery. Read more about the history hidden in the trees around Halifax by visiting the article at the link in the podcast notes. link:http://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/a-century-after-the-halifax-explosion-grim-reminders-can-still-be-found-in-trees/ The Poilu Censorship Workaround Lastly this week, I wanted to share a really amazing article from the Centenaire website, the official national centennial organization in France. The story comes from the Municipal Archives of Marseille, where one archivist discovered a sneaky and smart strategy to get around the heavy censoring of wartime letters. Jean Bouyala, who went on after the war to become a prominent surgeon, was one of several Poilus who found a way to write secret messages on their letters. It sounds bizarre, but by writing first using their saliva, then having the letter’s recipient brush black ink over the page, the saliva stanzas become legible, a darker black writing in the midst of the ink wash on the page. This way, the Poilu were able to send home messages that would otherwise have been blocked by the censor. A link to the article is in the podcast notes along with photographs of the magic-ink letters. Saliva-- the key to clandestine correspondence! And that’s it this week for the Buzz!
The current challenge is to identify which children will do well with less treatment and who need more. n 1984 and 1985, a total of eleven Iranian patients were transferred to hospitals in Munich, Germany, after a reported gas attack in the Iran-Iraq war. The initial symptoms and pretreatment in Teheran, Iran, as well as the admittance examination data, the clinical courses of the patients, and the clinical laboratory data in Germany, are reported. The main injuries were to the skin, the eyes, and the respiratory tract. One patient stopped breathing suddenly on the third day of treatment (eight days after the exposure). A large piece of mucous membrane blocking a bronchus was removed during an immediate bronchoscopy, but attempts at resuscitation failed. The most important autopsy findings in this case were severe pseudomembranous inflammation of the trachea and the bronchial tubes. The histological findings are reported. Chemical proof of the poison (mustard gas) was established. A review of the history of chemical warfare, the physical and chemical properties of mustard gas, and a literature survey of clinical findings (including, especially, experiences from World Wars I and II) contribute to the understanding of the actual cases.
