This week we're discussing Thunderball, the latest album by Melvins. Technically, this was released as Melvins 1983, which has the band's very first drummer, Mike Dillard, on drums instead of Dale Crover. Thunderball also features experimental musicians Void Manes and Ni Maitres lending electronic contributions. If you're a fan of the early 90s sludge era of Melvins, then this is the album for you. Though Dale is known as the long-time drummer for Washington sludge-metal band Melvins ('88-present), he's also a guitarist and singer who led the band Altamont though four alternative rock albums ('97-'05) and has now released his third full-length, stylistically varied solo album. We discuss "I Quit" from Glossolalia (2024), "Bad Move" from The Fickle Finger of Fate (2017), and "The Bit" by Melvins from Stag (1996). End song: "El Stupido" by Altamont from The Monkees' Uncle (2005). Intro: "Spread Eagle Beagle" by Melvins from Houdini (1993). More at dalecrover.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Dale Crover shares his Splash Story with myself and Diamond Dave and he's one hell of a laid back good humoured guy. He tells us he's fabulous ! He had a rough time of it sometime back having to undergo an emergency spinal surgery operation so that's good to hear. Not for the faint hearted but he's a Melvin right! On tour with Ministry after the Pandemic led to two drummers on The Tarantula Heart album with influences by PIL's Flowers of Romance and a new way of working and putting the tracks together and having "really long songs on it." There's reminiscenses on Kiss Gene Simmons, Atlantic Records and a whole bunch of insights.Crover mentioned he felt fortunate to work with King Buzzo whom he describes as "a great, idiosyncratic songwriter and a superb live performer". He added that working with Kurt Cobain, Mike Patton and Buzz had been great - all three knew what they wanted " I just sit at the back, add a bit of direction and help steer the ship." Coady Willis is a drummer based in Los Angeles CA. His has a robust pedigree of performing and recording with The Murder City Devis, Big Business, Melvins and High On Fire, to name a few. He is also one of three drummers on the all percussion record, Hew Time, along with Joe and Dale Crover. Coady tells us how his uncle helped paved the way for life as a rock n roll drummer, why seeing the band Tribe 8 changed his early teen perspective on performance and he shares his experience of playing in bands in Mt. Vernon and Seattle in his formative years. He also shares his journey from being a young Dale Crover fan to eventually playing alongside Dale in Melvins. The two drummers discuss their individual approaches to joining an established band, the hurdles that come with it, and why being conscientious of the group's chemistry is crucial. Finally, Coady talks about his long history with High On Fire and why recording and writing the new record Cometh The Storm (out now via MNRK Music Group) was such an educational and rewarding experience. We hear a few tunes from Cometh The Storm and of course the drummers talk drums. Today's guest made me protonic. I don't even know what that means, but welcome Conan Neutron to the podcast. I get some great insight into the Neutron house, growing up. For example, Conan started playing guitar because a friend of his came to the front door with a bass and told Conan he needed to get a guitar so they could start a band. Well it worked out alright, because he's been in some pretty awesome bands with some pretty awesome people, like Dale Crover. But according to Conan, the important part is planning the band's breakup ahead of time so it goes smoothly. Conan Neutron and The Secret Friends has released some great stuff, like an album about Hannibal Lecter and a concept album about depression and mental health. And Conan also has his own podcast, Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal. He has just released a new album called Adult Prom. Make sure you get that right. It's a split LP with the band Lung. For the 30th anniversary of the Melvins' 1993 classic, HOUDINI, we take a detailed look at how the record was made. Buzz Osborne, Mike Dillard and Matt Lukin had formed the Melvins in 1983 when they were teenagers living in Montesano, Washington. Drummer Dale Crover ended up replacing Dillard early on and has remained with the band to this day. When Osborne and Crover decided to move to San Francisco, Lori Black took over on bass, and they began a series of releases with indie label, Boner Records. By the time, they got to their fifth album, they decided to sign to a major label as the Northwest music scene had exploded in popularity and had attracted the attention of the major labels. After they signed with Atlantic Records, they enlisted their old friend, Kurt Cobain, to produce the album. In this episode, Buzz Osborne describes the difficult sessions that took place while making the record. Kurt Cobain was dealing with a heroin addiction at the time and would often not show up for sessions. Osborne talks about making the decision to fire Cobain right in the middle of the sessions. Ultimately, Cobain did have a hand in co-producing six tracks on the album and played guitar and drums on a couple songs. Osborne describes this period when the Melvins had already seen success on indie labels but decided to sign a contract with the major label powerhouse, Atlantic Records. Osborne describes his initial shock when Atlantic didn't interfere with their creative process at all and let them make the record they wanted to make. From Osborne's often nonsensical lyrical approach to the importance of dynamics in heavy music to a rotating cast of bass players to Dale Crover's mastery of tempo and feel to combining classic rock with punk rock attitude to the Melvins belonging on a legendary label, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
**A Reminder! The next live “Interceptor Beyond Show” as a part of BLACK RABBIT event is happening on July 15th at Arena Beisl.** The Melvins It's no overstatement to say the Melvins thoroughly reformulated the sound of heavy guitar music in America in both the punk underground and the hard-rock mainstream. This is no small feat, considering that the band—cofounded by guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover in Montesano, WA, in 1983—have always been unconventional cult artists. Across their first five full-lengths, from 1987's Gluey Porch Treatments to 1993's Houdini, they developed a grinding synthesis of Black Sabbath-inspired metal and hardcore punk aggression that influenced not only Nirvana and grunge but also sludge, stoner rock, doom, and drone metal. The Melvins aren't just heavy, however: They're weird and irreverent, too. You can hear it in Osborne's gnarled bellows and absurdist lyrics. That sensibility also explains why their records—especially those released after hooking up with Mike Patton's Ipecac label in 1999—boast such wildly different personalities. Their 2004 collaboration with industrial pioneer Lustmord descends into dark ambient; by contrast, 2018's Pinkus Abortion Technician is a slab of '70s rock worship featuring Butthole Surfers legend Jeff Pinkus on bass. There's real freedom in the Melvins' unpredictability, and it's just as central to their legacy as all their brilliantly crawling riffs and thunderous grooves. https://www.themelvins.net/ https://www.instagram.com/melvinsdotcom/ https://www.facebook.com/melvinsarmy https://open.spotify.com/artist/6aVjo0xHSiuW5hkasoYSR3 - Cover photo by https://www.instagram.com/belialcricetinae/ _ Don't forget to follow this podcast everywhere you get your podcasts. So we are pretty sure you enjoyed our interview marathon between XMas and New Years - if not check our YouTube Channel for those conversations with Jarboe, Sunflo'er, Dale Crover, drowse and Noah Landis (Tension Span)! nonetheless, that marathon is over, it's a new year and we got a new format for you, which we will try to bring frequently but irregularly - two bands interviewing each other. And how awesome is this first edition with Brutus and Psychonaut?! Two Belgian bands who released mindblowing albums late last year and now we got them here on together on our channel! Yeah that's right, they will interview each other and we will be hosting those sessions. So, those bands should be kinda interested in each other and take some time to come up with questions for each other. Of course, we also ask a few questions, but only a very few to make sure these bands get to know what they want to know. In order to kickstart a format, one should have a great first edition. We think we got one of the most interesting combos possible at the moment: Two bands from mighty Belgium, two bands that know each other pretty well and who also got highly interesting questions for each other. If you want to know how well-connected they are, when they first shared a stage and what drives both bands - check out this brilliant interview - Brutus x Psychonaut, ladies and gentlemen!
Day 5, marathon midterm and today we touch royalty. Because today's interview partner, Dale Crover, has worked with: Mike Patton. King Buzzo. Kurt Cobain. And these are just a few of the names he's worked with. Starting out in the Pacific Northwest and leaving with King Buzzo from there right before Seattle exploded, he also left behind a band he used to play in you might know: Nirvana. But hey, being one of only two constant members of The Melvins ain't so bad either, huh? We talked with him about the new Melvins record, the band itself, his relation to Buzz and so much more. When talking to Dale, one does not have the feeling as if he is talking to somebody who was in so many bands and projects with so many famous people and musicians, artists and vocalists. Why? Because if there is one thing Dale certainly ain't, it's arrogant. He is a funny, regular guy when talking to you pretty openly about how the new record came to be, what it is like to be a part of the Melvins for so long, that he seemingly understands Buzz blindfoldedly and how it feels to be 69th best drummer in the world (according to a certain magazine, that doesn't know anything)! Enjoy folks! Photo credit: Shervin Lainez

Bad Mood Rising is the newest release by legendary rock band, Melvins. With next to noannouncement the record appeared first on vinyl in September and shortly after was available onstreaming platforms.Releasing an album with zero PR lead up isn't really the done thing, and few bands could afford totake this approach if they cared about the success of a release. As veterans of the heavy musicworld, Melvins aren't one of those bands, and Bad Mood Rising is being met with much enthusiasmand praise by fans. The album is comprised of a mere 6 tracks but runs for 40 minutes. It is opened by the 14 minutesludge journey, Mr Dog Is Totally Right.I was fortunate to be able to chat with drummer Dale Crover, who explained the reasons behinddropping a surprise release, how they keep their song writing processes fresh and what's on thecards for 2023 (spoiler alert, a 40 th anniversary tour that includes Australia!)Have a listen to the interview with Dale, and make sure you check out Bad Mood Rising, out now viaAmphetamine Reptile Records.
Melvins drummer Dale Crover reflects on his history as a fan, from loving the Beatles and KISS (whilst hating Journey) right through to discovering punk rock as a metal head through the early days of the band. Two years of pandemic couldn't keep Melvins down. In 2021 alone, the group released a pair of LPS: Working with God and Five Legged Dog, their 24th and 25th, respectively. The latter found the band revisiting their back catalog with acoustic reimaginings of 36 tracks. Last month, the group released the four-song EP, Lord of the Flies, a preview for yet another full length due out later this year. Frontman Buzz Osborne and drummer/bassist Dale Crover have remained the driving force for the band's nearly 40-year history. Through the decades and a rotating cast of musicians, Melvins have remained a defiantly pioneering – and weird – force.
After a well deserved Christmas break the boys get together and pick some of their favorite songs from some underrated bands. The first episode, in what will be a series throughout the year, celebrates some of the more underappreciated bands. Episode 70 covers a wrap-up retrospective discussion on what we've gathered from listening to the entire Nirvana studio album discography. How does their music age into 2021? Would you truly consider them as one of the best bands of all time OR the best-timed band (came into the world at the perfect time) of all time? What would a fourth Nirvana studio album sound like and would you have wanted that or is ending at "In Utero" the perfect swan song? All points and more discussed in this episode. Tune in next week as we begin our 7th band full studio album discography journey... Guns N' Roses. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Mr. Joe Plummer. Joe has played drums for Modest Mouse, Cold War Kids, The Shins, The Black Heart Procession and so many more in addition to releasing his own album, Hew Time, with Dale Crover and Coady Willis. Basically, he's a really cool dude. He's the epitome of a working drummer and I love the personality he brings to any band he signs on with. He's also the host of his own podcast called Tour Stories, which we discuss towards the end of the episode. Please enjoy my conversation with Joe about the main influences that shaped him into the very-sought-after drummer he is today. Cheers! And Happy Holidays! Relax for a damn second. We're joined by a musician who thrives when he's uncomfortable. Tobias Nathaniel's greatest enemy is muscle memory. That's why he switched from guitar to organ. He formed The Black Heart Procession and kept his penchant for being uncomfortable by playing instruments like sheetmetal and being the wedding band for Melvins drummer Dale Crover's nuptials. He also explains how he inadvertently wrote Rick & Morty's Evil Morty Theme.Toby moved to Serbia to show solidarity with vampires & possibly join a vampire class action law suit. He also tells us how Madonna broke his heart. He's started a new band called The Red Step that sounds like garage rock meets post punk. It's raw and gloomy in the best ways. He also discusses his performance anxiety and how he became a front man for his band. Follow The Red Step on social media & pick up their debut on Pravda records. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Dale Crover joins us. You may remember him from one of his many bands: The Melvins, Altamont, Redd Kross, or maybe The Dale Crover Band, who are releasing a new album. If you're not familiar with Dale's solo music, it's definitely a separate entity from The Melvins. But Dale tells some great stories about Gene Simmons & KISS, meeting Buzz, playing biker sleepover parties as a teen, & Greg Bissonette. He's also done a little acting. He played both young AND old Neil Young in the Harvest Moon video. There's a few great stories about that experience too. A quick disclaimer, though. There was a not unusual buffering issue when we recorded. So occasionally Dale may sound like he's talking a little fast. That's the buffering. Follow Dale @drcrover on social media. Buy his album, Rat a Tat Tat!. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Buy us coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Please enjoy Dale Crover on Performance Anxiety, won't you?
