Let's talk about Proverbs, Chapter 8: 10-11 & 9:8-9 – Wealth & Instruction There is so much in Chapters 8 & 9 of Proverbs. A common theme in both chapters is that wisdom should be held in high regard and is available to all of those who seek it out with diligence and apply the learning as a way of life. I've selected a passage out of both Chapter 8 and 9 to highlight today. Chapter 8, verses 10 & 11 – “(10) Receive my instructions, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold (11) For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” Both of the verses I selected from Chapter 8 really highlight the value, really the wealth, of wisdom. Wisdom is said to be more valuable than any other form of physically regarded signs of wealth. When we learn things, when we learn the “how” to do things, that cannot be taken from us. We have the ability to use our abilities to start over and to build up. Wisdom gives us a foundation for growth and sustainability in our lives. When we support learning opportunities, we help to give people a path to knowledge and wisdom that can help them flourish. The selection from Chapter 9 I selected highlights wisdom as something of value to be shared with people ready to receive and value it.  And we learn that wisdom builds on itself and defers to greater wisdom. The verses read, Chapter 9, verses 8 & 9 – “(8) Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. (9) Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”  People that are wise will have a desire for continuous learning. And we are even warned not to try to provide instruction to those who won't receive it, but to bring it to those who will value it.  These verses speak to me about the importance of being in learning environments. And also recognizing when people are and are not on board with the learning process.  When we all grow in knowledge, it can benefit our forward progress and upward trajectory.  If we are in spaces where growth is not supported or encouraged, it is likely not a place that will remain relevant or engaging.  The passage for today is Proverbs 9:8. It says, "Do not reprove a scoffer or he will hate you. Reprove a wise man and he will love you." This verse tells us that we should be careful about who we give advice to. If we give advice to someone who is not receptive to it, they will likely reject it and may even become angry with us. However, if we give advice to someone who is humble and willing to learn, they will appreciate it and may even love us for it. We can apply this verse to our lives by being mindful of the way we respond to correction. If we are humble and willing to learn, we will be more likely to accept correction and grow from it. However, if we are defensive and unwilling to listen, we will be more likely to reject correction and miss out on an opportunity to improve. Let's all strive to be wise people who are open to correction. When we are corrected, let's receive it with humility and love. This will help us to grow in our faith and become more effective in our work.

Mel, Todd, and Michael discuss the concept of reproof and how to determine who is fit for it and who isn't. Jesus said, "Do not cast your pearls before swine." and so as Christians we need to use discernment in who we attempt to correct. How fast can you tell when a person is not fit for reproof? What does this person look like? The conversation turns to the topic of cynicism, and how a pastor might square up with the realities of suffering and evil without becoming cynical. They also talk about various Christian pathologies associated with cynicism.

Exhort: parakaléō "from close-beside” "make a call" when "close-up and personal."  ” Patience: (makrothymia) is a spiritual blend of: restraining human anger and showing the passion of the Lord, i.e. patience that is regulated by God (waits for His timing).  This includes expressing the Lord's indignation (opposition to what He disapproves). Jeff Nance is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, served in the Sydney Australia Mission, and graduated from Brigham Young University in Political Science as an ROTC scholarship student, and from BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School. He served in the 101st Airborne Division, then in many capacities in Okinawa, Japan, in the civilian personnel branch, and later in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and Vicenza, Italy. He served as the Chief, Military Justice and then Chief of Operational Law of V Corps and deployed to Iraq, where he oversaw the initial reconstitution of the Iraqi criminal courts system. Back in the United States, he served as USATDS Region II Regional Defense Counsel before being selected to serve as a Military Judge. Promoted to Colonel, he was transferred back to Germany and deployed several times to preside over scores of courts-martial in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. He later served as Circuit Judge and then as Chief Circuit Judge in the 3rd Judicial Circuit and 2nd Judicial Circuit. In his 13+ years as a military judge, Colonel Nance presided over hundreds of courts-martial, including some of the Army's most complex and high-profile cases. After retiring from active duty in October 2018, he was sworn in as an Immigration Judge with the Department of Justice. Being in the Army for 30 years and living all over the world has given Jeff and his wife Jeneen many service opportunities. He is currently serving as a bishop in his eighth bishopric and has served as a nursery leader, youth Sunday School teacher, primary teacher, elders quorum president, high priest group leader, and stake high counselor. Jeff and Jeneen are the proud parents of three children and three grandchildren.
