He is a former Assistant Attorney General, White House Fellow and Florida Senator. As State Attorney, Aronberg leads a team of 115 prosecutors and 180 professional staff in five offices throughout Palm Beach County. Aronberg's leadership has led to high state rankings in conviction rates for both felonies and misdemeanors, a decrease in the number of juveniles direct filed into adult court, and a greatly improved working relationship with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. In 2016, he created a Sober Homes Task Force that has made more than 120 arrests for patient brokering and insurance fraud in the rehab industry, and has led to several new Florida laws and regulations that have become the model for other states. Aronberg's efforts also convinced Google to restrict advertisements and improve screening for addiction treatment.  The crackdown in rogue sober homes and corrupted drug treatment contributed to a 14% decrease in opioid-caused deaths in Palm Beach County in 2021, compared to the previous year. Dave Aronberg was born in Miami. He attended public schools before going on to graduate with honors from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After graduation, he worked in the litigation department of a large South Florida law firm while also working closely with Insurance Commissioner Bill Nelson to investigate European insurance companies that refused to honor World War II-era policies sold to victims of the Holocaust. In 2000, Aronberg was selected to be one of 15 White House Fellows from across the country. In this nonpartisan position, he served in two presidential administrations as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury Department for international money laundering, including the laundering of terrorist assets. Dave Aronberg was elected to the State Senate in 2002 as its youngest member and served until 2010. Focusing on criminal justice and consumer protection issues, Aronberg passed major identity theft and port security legislation and served as the Chairman of the Military Affairs and Domestic Security Committee. He also served as Chair of the Everglades Restoration Committee, where he advocated for accelerating water storage projects and additional State and Federal support for Florida's “River of Grass.” In 2010, Aronberg returned to the Florida Attorney General's Office as a Special Prosecutor for Prescription Drug Trafficking. In his role as the Attorney General's “Drug Czar,” Aronberg led an anti-pill mill initiative that helped clean up the pain clinic industry and reduced the record number of people dying each day from oxycodone abuse.  His work to save lives from drug overdoses continues as a top priority to this day. In a shocking development, Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the killing of District Judge Kevin Mullins inside the Letcher County Courthouse on Thursday. The incident has sent ripples through the small Appalachian community of Whitesburg, home to approximately 1,700 residents. The tragic event unfolded after an argument between Sheriff Stines, 43, and Judge Mullins, 54, just before 3 p.m. local time. According to Kentucky State Police, Mullins was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Stines surrendered without incident following the shooting. Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart addressed the community, stating that the killing is an “isolated incident” with no ongoing threat to the public. “Any time a situation like this takes place, especially in a small town, it shakes the very foundation of what the town is and this is no different,” Gayheart told local outlet WJHL. The Kentucky Attorney General's office, led by Russell Coleman, along with Commonwealth's Attorney Jackie Steele for the 27th Judicial Circuit, are spearheading the investigation. Coleman emphasized the commitment to justice, stating on social media, “We will fully investigate and pursue justice.” Governor Andy Beshear also responded to the tragedy, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Sadly, I have been informed that a district judge in Letcher County was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon. There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.” The community's reaction has been one of profound sadness and disbelief. Lead county prosecutor Matt Butler recused himself from the case due to personal ties with Judge Mullins. “We all know each other here. ... Anyone from Letcher County would tell you that Judge Mullins and I married sisters and that we have children who are first cousins but act like siblings,” Butler explained. “For that reason, among others, I have already taken steps to recuse myself and my entire office.” Laurance B. VanMeter, Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, expressed his shock and sorrow, stating, “I am shocked by this act of violence and the court system is shaken by this news.” In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, several local schools were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure. The temporary closure of the Letcher County Courthouse has added to the community's distress, disrupting the daily lives of its residents. Yerrid gave his time, costs, and efforts for nearly a year to the people of Florida as a public service. As a result, The Florida Justice Association presented him with the Outstanding Pro Bono Award, a special recognition given only every several years. Yerrid also was retained by the City of Tampa to hold BP responsible for the economic damages it sustained as a result of that disaster. He successfully obtained a $27.5 million settlement in July 2015. It was the largest recovery paid to any municipality by British Petroleum. In the 1990's, as the youngest lawyer appointed by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to an 11-member “Dream Team” of private lawyers, Steve undertook a leading role in Florida's landmark lawsuit against the previously unbeaten cigarette industry. The case resulted in the biggest monetary settlement that had occurred in U.S. history, ultimately topping $17 billion. In addition, he and the Dream Team members succeeded in obtaining unprecedented advertising concessions that permanently prevented marketing aimed at children, eliminated cigarette billboards, vending machines, Joe Camel, the Marlboro Man, and established youth tobacco prevention programs across the United States. As a result of his success, tenacity and integrity, Steve has long been sought out to take on important and precedent-setting cases. He was honored to be appointed as Special Counsel to the Office of the Chief Judge (13th Judicial Circuit) and the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. In representing Florida's entire judiciary, he successfully argued before the Florida Supreme Court and protected state judges and staff from public disclosure of confidential records and internal communications within the court system. Yerrid is a lifetime member of the prestigious Inner Circle of Advocates, an “invitation only” organization whose membership consists of the top 100 trial lawyers in the United States. A Florida man, Nicholas Koontz, aged 35, was found guilty of manslaughter with a firearm following a three-day trial in Manatee County. The trial concluded on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Florida State Attorney's Office for the 12th Judicial Circuit. The incident dates back to October 12, 2021, when Koontz and Timothy Hendricks became embroiled in what prosecutors describe as "an apparent road rage altercation" while driving in West Bradenton. According to the prosecution, the altercation escalated when Andricks allegedly threw a McDonald's cup containing ice and soda at Koontz's vehicle. Koontz claimed that Andricks cut him off while he was on his way home from work, leading to a confrontation at an intersection. Allegedly, Andricks aggressively gestured at Koontz and hurled the cup at his car, which struck Koontz in the temple and spilled soda inside his vehicle. The confrontation escalated further as both men stopped on a residential street, leading to Koontz fatally shooting Andricks 11 times after they exited their vehicles. During the trial, Koontz argued that he acted in self-defense, fearing for his life after Andricks allegedly threatened him and exited his vehicle to confront him. "In that split second, in that life-or-death scenario, I believe if I didn't act right then and there I was going to die, and my only option was to shoot in self-defense," Koontz said. Koontz said the cup, which was full of Coca-Cola and ice, struck him in his temple and spilled soda all over his car. However, prosecutors challenged Koontz's account, questioning the necessity of using lethal force in response to a non-lethal assault with a paper cup. They emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest Andricks was armed. Key evidence presented during the trial included footage from a neighbor's doorbell camera, showing the events leading up to the shooting. Prosecutors highlighted the sequence of events captured in the footage, suggesting that Koontz pursued Andricks out of anger rather than self-defennse. But prosecutors dissected the footage multiple times throughout the trial, pointing to the fact that Andricks' hands "were swinging" as he walked toward Koontz and were clearly visible. "Is it reasonable to shoot somebody who has no weapon?" Assistant State Attorney Rebecca Freel said during closing arguments. "There was no basis to believe that Mr. Andricks had a gun." Despite Koontz's claims of self-defense, prosecutors maintained that his actions were unjustified and fueled by road rage. Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O'Donnell argued that Koontz exacerbated the situation, ultimately resulting in Andricks' death. "This defendant created this situation. He (Koontz) escalated this situation. He made it worse and then complained when it went foul," said O'Donnell. "And now he wants to object now that he's escalated the situation up here and say it's all self-defense." Koontz now faces a potential maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. A sentencing date has yet to be determined by the state attorney's office. In her closing argument, Assistant State Attorney Rebecca Freel emphasized that while Andricks' actions might have been provocative, they did not warrant a lethal response. In this episode, we pass the mic to Judge Claudia Isom to discuss women in the law and the judiciary. Claudia Rickert Isom became a member of the Florida Bar on October 23, 1975. She was elected to the judiciary and served as a circuit judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit for 28 years before retiring in December 2018. Judge Isom currently serves as a senior judge. During her judicial career, she served in Family Law, Criminal Justice (Felony), Juvenile Dependency, Juvenile Delinquency, Circuit Civil, East Division (Plant City), the Probate, Guardianship and Trust Division and Circuit Civil Division. She previously chaired the Florida Bar's Standing Committee on Professionalism and the Rules of Judicial Administration Committee. Judge Isom served on the Florida Bar Rules of Civil Procedure Committee and the Code and Rules of Evidence Committee. Isom is a member and past president of the Tampa Bay Inn of Court and served as the judge member of the 13th Judicial Circuit's Diversity Team for eight years following the Supreme Court's creation of Court Diversity Teams. Judge Isom retired from the bench in 2018 and currently serves as a senior judge. Since retirement, Judge Isom has become a certified mediator and remains involved in diversity awareness and bias elimination initiatives. She is a member of the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges Executive Committee and currently co-chairs its Senior Judges Committee. Judge Isom is a frequent trainer in the area of diversity and reducing bias in the judicial branch. Judge Isom served twelve years as a member of the Supreme Court's Standing Committee on Fairness and Diversity and chaired its Education Subcommittee. A 1975 FSU College of Law graduate, Judge Isom has been married to her law school classmate, Woody Isom, for 50 years; is the mother of four children (including two lawyers); and grandmother to six granddaughters. Longtime mid-Missouri Judge Kevin Crane announced last week that he will not seek re-election in 2024. 13th judicial Circuit Judge Crane says it's been a privilege and honor to serve the citizens of Boone and Callaway counties for the past 34 years. Judge Crane will serve his final year in office in 2024. Former Deputy Missouri Attorney General Jesus Osete has announced he will run for the position. Counselor Osete joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri', telling listeners that this will be an old-fashioned grassroots campaign. He plans to knock on as many doors as possible in both Boone and Callaway counties, and predicts it will take about $100,000 to run for this race. In April of 2023 a small group of southwest Floridians got together to express their concerns about what they see as growing trends toward autocracy here in Florida, and more broadly across the United States. They formally launched their nonpartisan nonprofit called Floridians for Democracy in May and since then have been working to bring people together who share similar concerns. The primary focus of their concerns are the policies and positions being put forth by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and the Republican-dominated state legislature, which they say demonstrate autocratic or authoritarian tendencies. We get an update on the work they're doing from Floridians for Democracy co-founder, Jim Nathan; and from Dave Aronberg, the elected State Attorney for 15th Judicial Circuit which includes Palm Beach County.

August 24, 2023, A Question of Ethics Conversation Episode Today's Question of Ethics Conversation looks at workplace culture and technology. It focuses on the ethical challenges to workplace culture and technology as it pertains to Canon 1.1 of the NACM Model Code of Conduct which states that a court professional faithfully carries out all appropriately assigned duties, striving at all times to perform the work:           Diligently - characterized by steady, earnest, and energetic effort.         Efficiently - capable of producing desired results with little or no waste (as of time or materials)          Equitably - dealing fairly and equally with all concerned          Thoroughly -  in a complete or thorough manner          Courteously - marked by respect for and consideration of others          Honestly – without cheating, genuine, without frills          Openly -exposed to general view or knowledge          Within the Scope of the court professional's authority.   According to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), an organization's culture defines the proper way to behave within the organization. This culture consists of shared beliefs and values established by leaders and then communicated and reinforced through various methods, ultimately shaping employee perceptions, behaviors and understanding. Organizational culture sets the context for everything an enterprise does. Because industries and situations vary significantly, there is not a one-size-fits-all culture template that meets the needs of all organizations.   Workplace culture has a profound effect on any organization as these statistics bear out. 53% of working Americans who have left a job due to workplace culture report leaving because of their relationship with their manager. 94% of people managers agree a positive workplace culture creates a resilient team of employees. 97% of executives agree their actions have a direct impact on workplace culture.   Technology is a tool, but it can have a dramatic effect on workplace culture. Jeff Nance is originally from Charleston, South Carolina, served in the Sydney Australia Mission, and graduated from Brigham Young University in Political Science as an ROTC scholarship student, and from BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School. He served in the 101st Airborne Division, then in many capacities in Okinawa, Japan, in the civilian personnel branch, and later in Bad Kreuznach, Germany and Vicenza, Italy. He served as the Chief, Military Justice and then Chief of Operational Law of V Corps and deployed to Iraq, where he oversaw the initial reconstitution of the Iraqi criminal courts system. Back in the United States, he served as USATDS Region II Regional Defense Counsel before being selected to serve as a Military Judge. Promoted to Colonel, he was transferred back to Germany and deployed several times to preside over scores of courts-martial in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. He later served as Circuit Judge and then as Chief Circuit Judge in the 3rd Judicial Circuit and 2nd Judicial Circuit. In his 13+ years as a military judge, Colonel Nance presided over hundreds of courts-martial, including some of the Army's most complex and high-profile cases. After retiring from active duty in October 2018, he was sworn in as an Immigration Judge with the Department of Justice. Being in the Army for 30 years and living all over the world has given Jeff and his wife Jeneen many service opportunities. He is currently serving as a bishop in his eighth bishopric and has served as a nursery leader, youth Sunday School teacher, primary teacher, elders quorum president, high priest group leader, and stake high counselor. Jeff and Jeneen are the proud parents of three children and three grandchildren. In this weeks episode of our birth series it is my complete honor to have Eyla Cuenca as a guest on the show to share her immense knowledge on the birth space.  She is truly inspiring and is changing lives and has so much to bring to not only this episode, but this podcast.A little bit about Eyla: Eyla Cuenca is a holistic birth guide (a term she coined already a decade ago), She is also Childbirth Educator, Lactation Counselor, health freedom advocate and mother. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Bennington College, and trained with AAHCC founded by Robert A. Bradley, MD where she became specialized as a Birth Educator. Her work as a Guardian Ad Litem for the 11th Judicial Circuit and attending births as a Doula in both hospital and home settings brought her into health freedom and advocacy work.  She stands behind the idea that it is everyone's right to have access to empowering education from conception to parenting. Her work is dedicated to offering guidance that supports women and men in the process that is a return to their deepest knowing about birth, individual sovereignty, and the body's innate intelligence. “A conscious birth, builds a conscious world”She offers 1-1 guidance sessions to assist women and couples at any point in their journey, from conscious conception to processing births years later.
