From a broken home and a life of addiction, Glenn's journey through Christian music to his ministry in the inner city and prisons is truly inspiring!
In 1985 the Contemporary Christian Music industry reached a cultural height it would never regain. That's the basic case that Tim Dillinger has been making lately in his Substack, God's Music Is My Life. With artists like Amy Grant, Leslie Phillips, Sheila Walsh, Tramaine Hawkins and Rez Band pushing the boundaries of CCM from the inside, and mainstream acts like Maria Muldour and Mr. Mister pushing into CCM from the outside, 1985 was a year like no other, according to Tim. Would you believe that the downfall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's PTL empire in 1987 would reshape the Christian landscape for the worse?---Register for Theology Beer Camp with our promo code RTDR for $75 off.Do you have a Christian rock story to tell?

The original Woodstock Festival happened once. The Cornerstone Festival, however, gathered an unlikely and diverse group of rock and rollers from around the world to two different pieces of land 29 years in a row. Even as the so-called “Jesus Movement,” of the late 60s, and its' fascinating musical soundtrack, transformed throughout the 80s into more of a subculture than a counterculture, and "Contemporary Christian Music" became more mainstream, Cornerstone kept the fire of revolution burning. With a radical lineup – both musically and educationally – this event was unique in the world. It was responsible for launching several artists not only into the thriving underground, but to mainstream rock, alternative, and metal success as well. The final Cornerstone Festival happened in July of 2012 and on this special edition of the True Tunes Podcast we revisit the event both through archival interviews and performance audio, and newly recorded interviews with some of the festival's founders. We hear from some of our listeners about the ways Cornerstone impacted them, and co-producer Bruce A. Brown even interviews our host, John J. Thompson, for his perspective. True Tunes traces its roots directly to this incendiary event – when John was just a 13-year-old kid watching The 77s, Rez Band, and others in a field outside of Chicago. We'll hear that story and a lot more. If you were ever at Cornerstone, you know. If not – take a listen and hear about one of the most unlikely, insane, wonderful, and influential events few people have ever heard of. We'll also ponder what we miss most about it ten years later – and what, if anything, we might do about that. What is Christian Rock? Where did it come from? Was it always so worship-y? Today on a very special episode of The Album Concept Hour, we're going to be answering all of those questions for you. Brad has teased his background in the Christian music industry before and with the help of his close friend and 2nd/3rd mother, Kathy Taylor from the Give Me 1 Reason podcast, they are going to compare notes on their experiences with the Christian music industry they each grew up with... And to get into that properly, we need to start at the beginning... The first Christian Rock band to stand shoulder to shoulder with other Classic Rock artists of the time... Rez Band (or Resurrection Band). With reformed hippie, Glenn Kaiser and Wendi, his wife with the outstanding voice, at the front as a Christian power couple, along with great musicians backing them in Stu Heiss, Roy Montroy, and John Herrin, they completely changed how Christians looked at music moving forward. They represented a shifting tide in American Christianity and were part of a new wave of hippie/Christian hybrids. Coming from the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Glenn Kaiser was able to capture the spirit of rock, while infusing it with his newly found spiritual beliefs and turn it into great Rock along the way. Glenn Kaiser, co-founder, songwriter, lead singer and guitarist for legendary Jesus Rock band Resurrection (Rez) Band, talks about how the pioneer days of Christian rock music on Episode 3 of #ejesuspodcast. Rez Band was one of the early pioneers of Christian rock music. They began in 1972 as a part of a Christian traveling community called Jesus People USA that would set up Christian rock revivals in towns and cities all over the south and midwest United States. They released their first album in 1979 and continued playing Christian rock music through 16 albums and over 25 years. Known predominantly for their hard rock sound led by husband and wife duo Glenn and Wendi Kaiser, they also incorporated heartfelt ballads, gritty blues, and even some experimental electronic music. Rez toured all over the world, playing rock & roll and preaching the gospel; breaking down conventional prejudices against hard rock music in the traditional church. They helped to open the doors to countless musicians who can now express themselves and their relationship to God in all manner of musical styles. Co-hosted by ELECTRIC JESUS writer-director Chris White and Music Supervisor/CCM Historian John J. Thompson, and featuring composer Daniel Smith, Season 1 - Electric Jesus: The Music Behind the Movie explores the world of 1980s Christian rock music with an eye toward the creation of the film's unforgettable original songs and score, the power of nostalgia, Evangelical youth group culture, and the Christian rock songs and artists that appear in the movie, ELECTRIC JESUS. This week, we continue our discussion with Christian Rock legend, Glenn Kaiser, as he shares more from his testimony and what he thinks we can be doing better, as the Church. Plus, we'll thrown in a few more samples of Rez hits as well! If you'd like to catch up with what Glenn is doing, visit www.glennkaiser.com!
Glenn Kaiser, along with his wife, Wendi, headed up one of the most influential and foundational Christian Rock Bands for almost 30 years. Resurrection Band quickly became the bar against what all other Christian rock bans were measured. However, unlike some artists, it was never about the music or the fame. To them, it was all about the ministry of the Gospel of Christ. The week, we get into the mind of Glenn as he talks about the music of REZ and what it meant, as well as his own testimony of converting from drug-filled hippie lifestyle to Christianity, and how that wasn't an easy transition. Join us for part one of this two-part episode!

Glenn Kaiser has been a musician since the late '60s. In 1971, he joined the group that would later become Resurrection (Rez) Band. Glenn fronted the hard rock Rez Band for more than 25 years before setting out on his own to pursue other musical avenues. In 1999 he formed the blues rock trio Glenn Kaiser Band (GKB) with former Rez bassist Roy Montroy and drummer Ed Bialach. Glenn's solo career is centered around the blues, especially with handmade cigar box guitars and other "found object" instruments, but also with lapsteel, acoustic and electric guitars and harmonica. His extensive discography - 35 recordings to date - includes projects of rock 'n' roll, R&B, worship, American roots and, the thread through it all, blues. In 2012, Glenn and blues harmonica great Joe Filisko recorded their live concert at the final Cornerstone Festival (Glenn Kaiser and Joe Filisko Live) and continue to share the stage when schedules allow. His 2011 project Cardboard Box was inspired by the plight of Chicago's homeless and the symbolic use of found-object instruments like cigar box guitars as trash-to-treasure. Its proceeds continue to benefit a northside homeless shelter, CCO.On his most recent studio project of traditional blues, Long Way from My Home, the handmade cigar box and “diddley bow” guitars are even more prominent, and the back porch reminiscence strong. The recording is essentially one-man blues, though Joe Filisko features stealthily on four tracks with harmonica, and accurately represents what one will get when Glenn performs solo - subtly brilliant blues.

The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
The Mind Renewed returns from its "half-term" break for an interview with John J. Thompson, veteran of the music industry and author of the thoughtful and challenging book Jesus Bread and Chocolate : Crafting a Handmade Faith in a Mass-Market World. Speaking from his passion for authentic spirituality, transformative community and artisanal living, John J. Thompson reflects upon the growing phenomenon of the handcrafted and small-batch culture, and asks whether this intensifying counterpoint to the one-size-fits-all world of corporate mass-production might have something important to say about Jesus and our relationship with Him. "Is it possible that our culture's re-engagement with handcrafted local things and experiences might contain the echo of a 'still small voice' calling us home to our truer selves? What might a batch of artisanal chocolate, or a fresh-baked loaf of bread, or a cup of home-roasted carefully-brewed coffee, tell us about ourselves, our nature, or our faith?"
