Jupiter comes on for a solo episode to talk about the latest (months old) BROCKHAMPTON album while Miles is unable to record. ATTENDEES Daniel Olney, Keith Rollins AGENDA New Business Discuss the new Brockhampton album (Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine) and Abstractions by Zo! & Tall Black Guy in terms of what these albums bring to the table that are special. Talk about creating warmth in your music. What are the benefits? How do you do it? How do you sustain it?
This week, Steve and Remfry discuss the 'doomsday vault' that is being created on the archipelago of Svalbard (just off the coast of Norway) to preserve the world's best music and whether the lockdown restrictions lifting in the UK on 19th July will (hopefully) mean that some UK-based festivals (we're looking at your Bloodstock and Reading and Leeds) will be able to go ahead (again hopefully). Happy days ... (hopefully!) We also question the decision of a New Zealand based mother naming their children Metallica, Slayer and Pantera ... naturally, Remfry brings you the pedophile angle on the story. There's not an awful lot going on in terms of new releases this week, but there is a bunch of stuff that we've missed over the past couple of months that definitely deserves some recognition, so we review new(ish) releases including the OST to DC Dark Nights: Death Metal (21:49) Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine by Brockhampton (53:19) Black to the Future by Sons of Kemet (84:33) Entertainment, Death by Spirit of the Beehive (102:32) … And Again Into The Light by Panopticon (114:30) and Bright Green Field by Squid (128:19) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy
One of BROCKHAMPTON's most beloved members, Dom McLennon is known for his versatile flow and clever wordplay. Following the release of the band's seventh LP, ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE, he talks to Jordan and Demi about the newly announced BROCKHAMPTON tour, how the band works together, and the legacy of the SATURATION trilogy.
Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
BROCKHAMPTON's original members formed after posting on a Kanye West fan message board in 2010, and then started making music in The Woodlands, Texas. Since then, they've turned the idea of a boy band on its head. With as many as 14 members at times, BROCKHAMPTON's deconstructed the traditional pop star/rap ethos by being unapologetically inclusive of racial and sexual identities. Today BROCKHAMPTON's frontman Kevin Abstract talks through the group's sixth and latest album, Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine with Rick Rubin. We'll hear Kevin talk about how the project slowly evolved from a pop album to something darker and more rap driven. Kevin also explains how supporting one of the group's members through losing their dad became the album's creative thrust, and explains why their next album will probably be their last.

Musician Kevin Abstract (founding member of BROCKHAMPTON) joins us today! With the release of “Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine,” we unpack how Kevin and the group arrived at this new record. Under the comfort of his sunglasses, Kevin talks about falling back in love with music during the pandemic (5:25), despite struggling with success (8:50) and self-acceptance (12:13). He also discusses the radical act of speaking his truth on Papercut (14:15), the power of representation (17:56), and the music video that jump-started BROCKHAMPTON's ascendency (21:30). Then, before we go, Kevin speaks openly about the mounting pressures to perform (25:48), the joys of collaborating with Dominic Fike on Peach (29:54), the healing nature of “Roadrunner” (36:07), and where he hopes the group goes from here (40:34).
