In this episode of the Pencil Pushers Podcast, host Mike Rosado sits down with Canadian animator Alain Seguin, who has been in the animation industry for over 27 years. Seguin discusses his early influences, such as watching Looney Tunes and Aladdin, and how these childhood inspirations led him to pursue a career in animation. He shares his extensive experience working on commercials for 17 years before transitioning to feature films and TV shows, including Space Jam: A New Legacy, Enchanted, and HBO Max's Looney Tunes series. Seguin also offers insights into his role as a senior animator on the new theatrically released Looney Tunes film The Day the Earth Blew Up, his thoughts on the current state of the animation industry, and the importance of traditional hand-drawn animation. The conversation also touches on the challenges and rewards of working in commercial animation, the significance of proper training and mentorship, and Seguin's passion projects. Nobody sets out to make a bad movie. And yet, it happens. A lot. Especially when it comes to sequels. Hollywood can't resist going back to the well when a movie captures a passionate audience – and makes lots of money. But again and again sequels disappoint, and in some cases, can be so bad they kill a franchise. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as it focuses on the most dreadful of duds, the most creatively bankrupt of flops, as we debate the Worst Movie Sequels. Films discussed: Speed 2: Cruise Control, Highlander 2: The Quickening, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Caddyshack II, Jaws: The Revenge, Halloween Kills, Basic Instinct II, Teen Wolf Too, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Staying Alive, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Grease 2, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Batman & Robin, Zoolander II, Spider-Man 3. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Jim Czadzeck, Kate Racculia, and Kevin Dillon as they debate 16 of the most reviled movie sequels of all time. Few people can top the story of D'Lo Louis, who defied the expectations of those around him by becoming a successful filmmaker after spending nearly 10 years in prison. This non-traditional start did not inhibit him though, as the first film he worked on was “Space Jam: New Legacy,” followed by “Wakana Forever” and many exceptionally well-known films. As his drive lead him further, D'Lo soon became a consultant on the “Creed 3” film. As D'Lo sets his future goals towards directing his own feature films, one thing is for certain; nothing can stop this man from putting his full dedication into everything he does.00:00:00 - Introduction to D'Lo Louis' Journey00:00:36 - Growing Up in Richmond, CA: A Tough Environment00:01:44 - Motivated by Money: The Hustle and Consequences00:03:14 - Facing the Reality of Prison: Taking Accountability00:05:37 - Reconnecting with Ryan Coogler: A Lifelong Friendship00:06:49 - Watching Fruitvale Station Succeed from Prison00:08:02 - Unexpected Preparation: Writing Coverage in Prison00:11:19 - Reintegrating into Society: Overcoming Post-Prison Challenges00:14:38 - Breaking into Hollywood: Becoming Ryan Coogler's Assistant00:16:10 - Learning on Set: Working on Space Jam: A New Legacy00:21:31 - Growth on Judas and the Black Messiah: New Challenges and Skills00:25:30 - Working Through Chadwick Boseman's Passing on Wakanda Forever00:29:19 - Life Imitates Art: The Influence of D'Lo Louis' Story on Creed III00:34:10 - Behind the Scenes: Directing with Jonathan Majors00:42:54 - Transitioning to Directing: Shoebox and Future Projects00:48:58 - Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers: Persistence, Patience, and Passion00:52:52 - Reflection: Would D'Lo Louis Change His Past?00:54:07 - Upcoming Projects: Announcements and Final ThoughtsFollow D'Lo – https://www.instagram.com/dlo.louis/?hl=enFollow Announcements Film - https://www.instagram.com/announcementsfilm/?hl=enSupport the show

What if 'Space Jam' was recast with another NBA star? While the rest of the crew are out enjoying summer, Cory and Nick go on their own trip down memory lane as they reminisce about the 1996 Looney Tunes classic. After shifting gears to reflect on the recent NBA Finals, the rise of the WNBA, they dive into the lasting influence of "Space Jam" on our culture, all while contemplating a creative challenge: reimagining the film without Michael Jordan (but no LeBron James this time).Peek behind the curtain as we explore the fascinating production details of "Space Jam." Discover Michael Jordan's initial hesitations about acting, the clever screenplay that blends his real-life journey with a fantastical narrative, and the disputed directorial credit between Joe Pitka and Ivan Reitman. We also contrast the original film with the sequel "Space Jam: A New Legacy" and delve into the technical marvels of merging live-action and animation, drawing comparisons to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Our discussion also covers the film's critical reception and the enduring magic it holds for our two 90s kids. Finally, Cory takes the film to 1989/90, for "pre-Jordan" version, while Nick takes it forward to 2021, to reimagine the movie in different eras. They brainstorm potential storylines and comedic gold of certain NBA stars teaming up with the Looney Tunes. We even dream up an updated soundtrack featuring artists of the times we're jumping to. Tune in for a lively blend of basketball nostalgia and movie magic, celebrating the timeless charm of "Space Jam" and envisioning its future.(00:01:00)Intro(00:09:38)About the Movie(00:20:49)Useless Critic Stats(00:38:28)Casting Rules(00:41:04) New Soundtrack? Titanic II (2010) is up next on our unnecessary sequels month! Oh? You thought it was going to be Space Jam: A New Legacy? Well, you must have heard wrong. After all, how could we pass up the opportunity to see a gigantic boat crash a second time? What a twist! Will this be the film that finally adds a 'bored' tally to Sam's list? How could it? Surely the stakes have never been higher? Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023) is the second film in our unnecessary sequel month. Does it deserve to be here? Probably. Tell us what happens in the first Chicken Run film. Quickly. See? Unless you're one of the top stans, you probably don't remember. Why is that the case? Well, the first one was made in 2000 and while it is good, it's never really been spoken of again in the wider public sphere. Our exit today has us maybe regretting that veiled autobiographical novel. This week, we are discussing The Best Man, written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring an ensemble of wonderful up-and-coming young actors. Of course, we spend a lot of time discussing Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, and of course, podcast favorite Regina Hall. Plus, we talk about Lee's famous cousin Spike, some wedding dos and don'ts, strippers with a heart of gold, Space Jam: A New Legacy, what makes a great ensemble, and then Ross drops the bomb about the origin of one of next week's films...spoiler alert: Tripp is shocked! On today's episode, I talk to writer and director Juel Taylor. Originally from Tuskegee, Alabama, Juel at first wanted to design video games, but in college he shifted his focus to filmmaking. He did different jobs in sound while he was waiting to break through, and in 2018, he co-wrote Creed II. Directing gigs on Boomerang and Twenties followed, as well as co-writing Space Jam: A New Legacy in 2021. This all culminated in Juel's first project as co-writer and director They Cloned Tyrone, which was released last year on Netflix and was one of the best films of 2023! Show notes are available at QueenofPeaches.com. For this first episode of 2024, I'm really excited to share my conversation with Hollywood costume supervisor Sara Walbridge. Sara is a graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago and has been steadily working in Hollywood for over 20 years. Some of her best known TV projects include Love and Death, Barry, GLOW, and True Blood, and her film credits include Don't Look Up, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Vice, and Beautiful Boy. In our chat today, she gives me the lowdown on how costume supervising is like solving a puzzle; how the immediate aftermath of 9/11 inadvertently shaped the trajectory of her career; why if you don't notice the costumes in a movie or TV show, that actually means they've been executed really well; what the most pressing concerns about AI are for costume departments; the kinds of questions that get tossed around in the group chat of the so-called Costume Mafia; why working as a costume supervisor is secretly kind of a blue-collar job; and why she nerds out about making scale maps of changing tents for huge groups of extras. Plus, since we're well into awards season now, Sara highlights some of her favorite costuming moments from the year gone by that she hopes will be recognized by voters. For my Letterboxd users out there, I've created a list featuring all the films we talk about in this episode. Links to that and other show notes will be available on my blog QueenofPeaches.com.

“Being text-focused has been really beneficial and a change from the way I've seen concerts programmed in the past: ‘Do the keys align? What is the soundscape?' Those things are important, but for these concerts, the message that we're putting out there has to be priority. We are choral musicians, and we have words and stories to share, and those have to take precedent.”Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake works as a conductor, composer/arranger, vocal contractor, singer, and music activist. Blake is the Founding Artistic Director of Tonality, an award-winning choral ensemble focused on spreading a message of unity, peace, and social justice through a culturally diverse choral setting. He also serves as Principal Associate Conductor of the National Children's Chorus. As an arranger, Blake's “Wade in the Water” was a featured arrangement at the 2013 North Carolina Music Educators Association convention and is published with Santa Barbara Music Publishing. His choral arrangements are published by Alliance Music Publishing and Walton Music Publishing. Other musical activities include an opera conducting premiere at the 2019 Prototype Festival in New York City, preparing choirs for live performances with UCLA Center for the Art of Performance, and vocally arranging for a nationally televised performance during the 2022 MLB All-Star Game.Recent film and TV credits include singing on the soundtrack of Jordan Peele's “Us,” Disney's “Lion King,” and Pixar's “Spies in Disguise,” and leading sessions for Warner Bros "Space Jam: A New Legacy" and Netflix film "Escape from Spiderhead." Blake also worked as the choral contractor and vocal arranger for Andy Grammer's performance at the 2019 ARDYs (Radio Disney Awards). Blake recently prepared singers for the 2020 Grammy Awards and performed at the 92nd Academy Awards.Blake completed the Doctorate in Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern California in 2019, the Master of Music degree at the University of California Los Angeles in 2014, and the Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) in Vocal Performance at Wake Forest University in 2010.To get in touch with Alex, you can find him on Instagram: @alexanderlblake. On the newest episode of Comics and Chronic the guys discuss the Netflix movie They Cloned Tyrone. But first why was Cody up late? Is Mr. Clean a Nazi? Is Comics and Chronic about to be legalized? What does this movie and Space Jam: A New Legacy have in common? How are the actors in this? How do we feel about each other's movie and comic book recommendations? Was this our favorite role from John Boyega? How is the color palette used in the film? Where does this take place? What have we figured out about mad scientists? How does this movie make commentary on the way our modern society tries to keep minority communities down? Does this movie fit into any genre in particular? What MCU characters do these actors play? Is Jamie Foxx an underrated actor? How does Anthony offend Jake? Was Teyonah Parris cloned? Did Yo-Yo and Slick Charles have good chemistry? How does this movie make us think about society? Does Kiefer Sutherland look like his dad? How are Fontaine and Tyrone's days similar? Does this movie manage to be funny and deep simultaneously? Will this get the accolades it deserves? Mel Blanc was a voice-over legend, originating and playing, for decades until his death, the voices of all the Looney Tunes characters and many more for Warner Brothers. When he passed away in 1989, another voiceover actor would rise to continue his legacy. From Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin, the Martian, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester, Tweety, and so many more icons of animation, legendary voice actor Jeff Bergman has voiced them all in TV and film from the late 80s to today, along with other Looney Tunes voice actors like Eric Bauza. Fans may know Jeff Bergman from such hits as Tiny Toon Adventures (and its upcoming reboot Tiny Toons Looniversity), Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Looney Tunes Show, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Looney Tunes Cartoons, and much more. We had the privilege of speaking with Jeff Bergman at SDCC 2023. We spoke about his career, the legacy he carries in animation and specifically for Looney Tunes, and the importance of the Actors Strike and what it means for voice actors. We also get a message from Bugs Bunny!

"He's mean, and he'll blast through your screen!" but that's okay, you don't need a screen for Filmshake, cuz we're a podcast, and we're talking 1993's Last Action Hero on its 30th anniversary. We'll try to decide if this *DEEP BREATH* fantasy action comedy drama deserved to flop harder than Lebron James at the box office (that joke means two things now!), or if it's actually an unsung gem, like Space Jam: A New Legacy (lol, just kidding Lebron). To find out, we've brought on the world's preeminent Last Action Hero expert, Jackson Boren, to let us know if Arnold Schwarzenegger's venture into the meta should have been a hit (like Michael Jordan's Space Jam) and Jackson's brought a friend. That friend is our punishment film, Arnie's lone directorial effort, 1992's made for TV romantic comedy remake, Christmas in Connecticut. Does it stand on its own two feet, or does it fall violently to the ground at the mere sight of an elbow, like Lebron does? Only one way to find out! Listen to this episode (unless you're Lebron*)!*Just kidding, Lebron, you can listen, but find a chair first.Music Featured This Episode"Jack and the Ripper" by Michael Kamen"The Real World" by Michael Kamen"River Chase" by Michael Kamen"Premiere" by Michael Kamen"Big Gun" by AC/DCSupport the showConnect with us!PatreonTwitterFacebookEmailLinktr.eeLetterboxd - Nic & JordanThe Nicsperiment

On Monday's ep. of Film Session, the guys discuss 2021's "Space Jam: A New Legacy." What were the funniest moments? How did LeBron James' acting compare to Michael Jordan's? Do Toons go to the real world when they die? Why did seemingly every critic hate this? And is it disrespectful to watch a movie on a train?Subscribe to No Dunks on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/NoDunksInc Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week the gang is discussing a movie that no one was particularly excited about; Space Jam: A New Legacy. And its biggest proponent, Ify Nwadiwe, had the audacity to not be available to record this episode. But producer Casey fills in and does his best to speak on his behalf and the behalf of all those who have a nostalgic soft-spot for the original film. Plus, the crew answers a question from the ‘Hotline' about movies that they can no longer watch because of real-life events. And, as always, there's ‘Staff Picks.'In news, Nicolas Cage is done with studio films, the director of the new Anthony Bourdain documentary uses AI to artificially recreate the late chef's voice, and Spike Lee messes up the Palme D'or announcement at Cannes.Staff Picks:Drea – Sword of TrustAlonso – Who Framed Roger RabbitCasey – Clockwatchers and Office KillerWith Drea Clark, Alonso Duralde, and Casey O'Brien

How was your weekend? Good? Well, LeBron's was better. The Lakers superstar's new movie, Space Jam: A New Legacy, opened Friday, and despite a plethora of very bad reviews, did nearly $32M in sales, more than 10 mil above industry estimates, despite still dealing with the effects of the pandemic and the movie simultaneously streaming on HBO Max. All in all, this was impressive, and audiences seem to have liked the movie. For that matter, the Kamenetzkys liked the movie better than the 1996 original. Is it a *great* movie? No. But it's an entertaining enough watch, and has some positives going for it.From there, a discussion about what this opening means for whatever aspirations LeBron has to be a genuine movie star. Fair to say this doesn't confirm he's The Rock 2.0, but could LeBron carve out a film career if he wants? The answer could be yes, for a few reasons. Finally, Eric Cain, host of Locked On Vols, joins to discuss Tennessee guard Jaden Springer. One of the youngest players in the Draft, he's been linked to the Lakers in multiple mocks, and worked out for the team over the weekend.Hosts: Andy KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: What are the best parts of this version of Space Jam? To begin, Don Cheadle, who's amazingly committed, and amazingly weird. For that matter, the whole movie's kinda weird, in a good way.SEGMENT 2: LeBron's performance is just adequate, but given the strong opening, does this mean he could be a movie star? The Kamenetzkys discuss his potential.SEGMENT 3: The Kamenetzkys talk with Eric Cain (Locked on Vols) about Tennessee guard Jaden Springer's one and done season, along with his strengths and weaknesses.Subscribe to Locked on Lakers on YouTube, here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyBhh19es9nSvPn0ixAmYEASupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
