Welcome to the next episode of the midierror meets... interview series speaking to all kinds of people working in music and sound.  In this episode, we're speaking to ROEL FUNCKEN, an IDM and Ambient artist who has been on line-ups with Aphex Twin. Autechre and many other influential acts.  Roel studied sonology for 6 years, and formed a duo with his brother Don called Funckarma, and started releasing solo material in 2010.    We discuss his approach to processing audio in ProTools and Ableton Live, studying Sonology and his incredible paintings. Today's guest deejay is Ard Bit. Ard first hit my radar when three of his tracks popped up in Roel Funcken's mega-mix for Soundwave. Soon after, Ard's music kept appearing on my Discover Weekly Mix on Spotify or various ambient mixes I came across. And each time, I had to check the playlist to find out who was making the fantastic music I was hearing. It was like the universe was telling me something. I took the hint and asked Ard to share a mix with us. Ard says his mix is “a moment with some favourite tracks, mixing, manipulating and jamming live with the lyra and field recordings.” And this mix is beautiful. I've only had a week to listen to Ard's mix and let it be the soundtrack for my morning walk with my dog. She and I go to the park to play ball. The park is under a path for jets, so it's pretty dramatic. Ard's mix seamlessly slipped into my environment and experience, lending a nostalgic cast for something happening now. The warm sounds, the static, and the sizzle played nicely off the jets' engines. There are even sounds of dogs barking in Ard's mix. Perfect! Tell me how your listing experience went. Today's guest deejay is Roel Funcken. When I began inviting people to guest deejay on Soundwave I requested mixes that were 30 - 60 minutes long. A 30 minute mix is perfect, but ambient mixes lend themselves to long sets, so I expected a log of guest deejays would not be able to help themselves, and would send me hour long mixes. Then Roel wrecks my format by sending me a mix that's two hours long! But that's what Roel does. He wrecks formats. His expression through music is always from an unexpected angle. It takes you off guard. Strap yourself in for a dense, yet spacious mix. There's nearly 50 tracks on today's show. Intermingled with Roel's mix are songs from his latest album, S1 . MK2. I am currently exactly where I was when I launched Soundweave during the beginning of the pandemic. My wife and kids re aways and it's just me and my dog. The difference is back then Soundwave was my way of coping with the stress and isolation of the pandemic. Now it's just part of our lives. I'm in a different head space. It's a beautiful day and I'm listening to Roel's beautiful mix. While the family is away, I can work on personal projects without distraction. Life is grand.
