Christian Zyp interviews Corey Payette (writer/director/composer) about the feature film STARWALKER. It will be screening as part of the Rainbow Visions Film Festival at Metro Cinema on Saturday June 20th at 9:15pm. STARWALKER is a luminous celebration of Indigenous and queer resilience — a love letter to self-expression, chosen family, and the unapologetic joy of authenticity. Bursting with music, movement, and spirit, it's a dazzling journey from pain to pride, and from survival to radiant self-love. In the beating heart of East Vancouver's drag scene, Star, a Two-Spirit Indigiqueer performer, struggles to rise above the city's shadows and claim their true identity. Lost and longing for belonging, Star finds refuge in the glittering world of the House of Borealis, a chosen family of bold and brilliant drag artists led by the radiant Mother Borealis. Surrounded by sequins, light, and sisterhood, Star begins to transform — discovering the healing power of performance and the courage to embrace who they truly are.TIX & INFO: https://metrocinema.org/event/starwalker-rvff/WEBSITE: https://www.starwalkerfilm.com/INSTAGRAM: @starwalkerfilm@coreypayatte

Choro Borealis is a Twin-Cities based Brazilian ensemble that performs a variety of musical styles from South America's largest country, including choro, samba, forro, and original compositions that incorporate jazz influences. The term choro references a type of instrumental music that evolved in the late nineteenth century from the fusion of European dances like polkas, schottisches, and walzes, combined with the rhythms brought to Brazil by enslaved African-descended people. The musicians include Pat O'Keefe on clarinet, Tom O'Keefe on percussion, Robert Everest on 7-string guitar and vocals, John Croakian on flute, and David Burk aka “Dusty” on cavaquinho. Some of the band members have played together in Brazilian groups for forty years. They are all knowledgeable and passionate and have a lot to say about the African and European roots of the music they perform, and the ways they are incorporating new influences. The musical selections are “Noiches Carioca,” “Coisa Feita,” “Okoco,” Ta Ligado,” “Sarau Para Radames,” and “Brilhante.” Choro Borealis is performing at 5:00 PM on Saturday, June 20th on the 6th Steet stage at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival.

Amtrak Ridership Is Rising

“Passenger rail is dead” gets thrown around like it's a fact, but the ridership numbers keep refusing to cooperate. We zoom out to Amtrak's systemwide performance first, including record highs of 32.8 million rides in FY24 and 34.5 million trips in FY25, then we go route-by-route to see what happens when new service meets real demand. We break down five recent Amtrak projects and compare early ridership to the projections that justified each launch. The Ethan Allen Express extension to Burlington shows how a simple 68-mile extension on existing track can produce a meaningful jump and hold it over time. The Mardi Gras Service between Mobile and New Orleans looks like a genuine breakout, blowing past its annual estimate in about six months while delivering strong customer satisfaction and enough demand that trains can sell out. Not every pilot shines though: the Berkshire Flyer's seasonal tourism model struggles with low and declining ridership, while the Valley Flyer appears to be a quieter success as it recovers from the COVID shock and inches toward its original target. Our biggest “wow” moment is the Borealis from Chicago to St. Paul, which beats its long-range forecast quickly and helps drive massive growth in the broader corridor. That success also points to the next problem: if demand is there, can we actually add frequency when there's a multi-year backlog for trainsets? We close by kicking around a practical bridge solution while rail capacity catches up: better regional bus connections and how Amtrak already plays a bigger role in bus service than many people realize.Subscribe for more transit deep dives, share this with a friend who still thinks nobody rides trains, and leave a review if you want more data-driven route breakdowns. What corridor should we analyze next?Send us Fan MailSupport the show

Filmmaker Corey Payette swings by the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about Starwalker, his critically acclaimed movie musical about drag queens in East Vancouver. Starwalker is the story of Star, an Indigi-Queer Two-Spirit call boy, who becomes entranced by the House of Borealis, a popular drag house in East Van. Blending drag performance with their grounded cultural spirit, a new, powerful persona emerges on stage: Starwalker. Corey – a renowned writer, lyricist, composer, producer, interdisciplinary storyteller, and director in theatre and film – is the force behind the critically acclaimed stage musical Children of God, about the echoes of residential schools. On the film front, he directed film festival favourites Stories That Transform Us, Guide My Way, and Les Filles du Roi.Corey's next stage project is On Native Land, and it has its world premiere in April at the York Theatre – but not before Starwalker screens seven times in Vancouver at the Vancity Culture Lab. Corey's work is searing, life-affirming, and abundant with soul-stirring indigeneity and what the Hollywood Reporter once described as “joyful rebellion.” In this wonderfully entertaining episode, Corey and avowed “musical theatre girlie” Sabrina riff on joyful rebellion, musical theatre as a vehicle for social change, their admiration for previous podcast guest Andrea Menard, and all things Starwalker.Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

In this episode of SpaceTime, we explore the latest astronomical phenomena and significant discoveries that are shaping our understanding of Earth and space.Auroral Displays Light Up the SkiesPlanet Earth has been treated to an extraordinary display of auroras, with both the Aurora Australis and Aurora Borealis lighting up the skies following three powerful X-class solar flares, including an X 5.1 event on November 11. This segment dives into the mechanics behind these solar flares, the resulting coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and how they triggered spectacular auroras visible at lower latitudes than usual, including sightings as far north as Cairns and even Florida.Largest Modern Impact Crater DiscoveredScientists have uncovered what is believed to be the largest modern impact crater on Earth, the 900-metre-wide Jinling Crater in southern China. This well-preserved structure, dating back to the Holocene epoch, offers new insights into extraterrestrial impacts and their effects on our planet. The discovery challenges previous assumptions about the frequency and scale of impacts from small celestial bodies and highlights the importance of studying such geological features.Nasa's Key Communications Dish Out of ServiceIn a significant setback for NASA, the 70-metre Goldstone deep space communications dish has been rendered inoperable due to an accident that occurred in September. The incident has raised concerns about the strain on NASA's Deep Space Network, especially with upcoming missions like Artemis 2. We discuss the implications of this loss for various space missions and the efforts being made to mitigate the impact on communications. The Science RobertIn our science report, we highlight a new projection from the World Meteorological Organisation indicating that 2025 is unlikely to be the hottest year on record, but it will rank among the top three. We also address public health concerns surrounding a measles alert in Australia, linked to declining vaccination rates, and the potential resurgence of preventable diseases. This segment underscores the importance of vaccination in maintaining herd immunity and protecting public health.www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com✍️ Episode ReferencesJournal of Geophysical ResearchNature CommunicationsWorld Meteorological Organisation ReportsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/spacetime-your-guide-to-space-astronomy--2458531/support.

Ice animates the look and feel of climate change. It is melting faster than ever before, causing social upheaval among northern coastal communities and disrupting a more southern, temperate world as sea levels rise. Economic, academic, and activist stakeholders are increasingly focused on the unsettling potential of ice as they plan for a future shaped by rapid transformation.  Yet, in Ice Geographies: The Colonial Politics of Race and Indigeneity in the Arctic (Duke UP, 2025), Jen Rose Smith demonstrates that ice has always been at the center of making sense of the world. Ice as homeland is often at the heart of Arctic and sub-Arctic ontologies, cosmologies, and Native politics. Reflections on ice have also long been a constitutive element of Western political thought, but it often privileges a pristine or empty “nature” stripped of power relations.  Smith centers ice to study race and indigeneity by investigating ice relations as sites and sources of analysis that are bound up with colonial and racial formations as well as ice geographies beyond those formations. Smith asks, How is ice a racialized geography and imaginary, and how does it also exceed those frameworks? Many volcanoes are among the most majestic sights on the planet: Tall and wide, they belch molten rock or plumes of ash that can tower miles high. But there's another class of volcano that's much less impressive. These guys are short and squatty. And they burp out bubbles and blobs of mud, water, and gas. What they lack in majesty, though, they make up for in numbers: more than a thousand have been discovered on land, and many others have been found at the bottom of the ocean. One of the most recently discovered marine examples is the Borealis Mud Volcano. It's a quarter of a mile deep in the Barents Sea, an extension of the North Atlantic Ocean, between Finland and Greenland. It's a little more than 20 feet wide and about eight feet high. It's in a large field of craters and small cones. Like Borealis itself, many of the cones put out plumes of methane gas.Geologists discovered Borealis during a 2023 research cruise. They studied it in more detail a year later. They suggest that it formed about 18,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age.During the ice age, what is now the ocean floor was covered by a giant slab of ice. As the ice melted and retreated, the pressure went down and the temperature went up. That allowed a big pocket of methane ice to begin vaporizing. The pressure blew a hole in the sediments above it. Today, the Borealis Mud Volcano continues to belch out methane, mud, and water from below the Barents Sea.

The names of the stars are a cultural mash-up. The names come from Greek, Latin, Arabic, and other cultures. And some names combine words from different languages. Two examples are the stars Tania Borealis and Tania Australis. “Tania” comes from an Arabic phrase that means “the second.” Borealis and Australis come from Latin, and mean northern and southern. Combined, the stars represent the second leap of the gazelle – a bit of skylore from Arabia. Skywatchers there saw three close pairs of stars as the leaps of a gazelle. All three pairs are at the edge of the modern constellation Ursa Major, the great bear. The “Tanias” are above the stars that form the outer edge of the dipper’s bowl. Tania Borealis is a single star that’s a good bit bigger, brighter, and heavier than the Sun. It’s at the end of the prime phase of life, so it’s undergoing big changes in its core. That’s causing its outer layers to begin to puff up to giant proportions. Tania Australis is a binary – two stars bound together by their mutual gravitational pull. One of the stars is similar to the Sun. The other is more than six times the Sun’s mass, and it’s already reached the “giant” phase of life. It’s puffed up to about 75 times the Sun’s diameter, and it shines about a thousand times brighter. So Tania Australis looks a bit more impressive than its northern cousin – the brighter half of the second leap of the gazelle. Script by Damond Benningfield

A pretty semicircle of stars crowns the sky on spring and summer nights: Corona Borealis, the northern crown. It’s in the east as night falls now, and stands high overhead a few hours later. In a couple of months, it’ll be overhead at nightfall. Most of the semicircle isn’t very bright – you need pretty dark skies to see it. It stands out because of the tight pattern, with a fairly bright star at the center: Alphecca, “the bright one.” Alphecca is really a binary – two stars locked in a gravitational embrace. The heavier of them is about three times as massive as the Sun, thousands of degrees hotter, and dozens of times brighter. Its companion is a little smaller and fainter than the Sun. The stars are quite close together – an average of about half the distance between the Sun and its closest planet, Mercury. The stars orbit each other once every 17 and a half days. And they’re lined up in such a way that we see the fainter star pass in front of the brighter one – an eclipse. When that happens, Alphecca dims by a few percent. That’s not enough for most of us to notice with the eye alone, but it’s an easy catch for astronomical instruments. Instruments also see a disk of debris around the stars. It extends billions of miles into space. It consists mainly of small grains of dust – material left over from the formation of Alphecca itself. We’ll talk about a pair of stars in Hercules tomorrow.

Blamo! | Exploring Fashion with the People Who Shape It

My guest this week is musician Phil Cook.I have been listening to Phil Cook's Appalachia Borealis constantly – almost once a day. Sometimes, I'll put it on in the late evening; other times, it's what I put on when I'm making my coffee. I have found myself forgetting it was on and tearing up over what I'm hearing. I rarely know what I'm talking about here, but I cannot get over the power of music, and Appalachia Borealis knocks me out.Produced by Phil's close friend and frequent collaborator, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), the album is so spacious that you can hear the room if you put headphones on. You can almost see where Phil sat in your mind when it was recorded. It's one of those albums you want on vinyl to dig deeper into.I sat down with Phil for a Blamo! episode a little bit ago, and we got into all of it. We discussed gospel music, parenting, and his friendship with the GOAT, Bruce Hornsby. It's all in there!**This episode is sponsored by Grant Stone **
