Hello and welcome the 156th episode of Film Freakz, our podcast about movies! This episode we chose to talk about the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail from 1975! This podcast features YemmytheFerret (Yemmy), RaeofPositivity (Rae), Taymation Studios (Tay), and JustKalas (Kalas). This movie was chosen by Yemmy, king of the Britons! A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen. Directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones. Thank you for listening on all platforms! We want YOUR recommendations for the FAN VOTE! How are innovation, data, and AI are transforming the mortgage experience? Wendy Hannah-Olson, SVP of Digital Alliances and Strategy Execution at Equifax, sits down with Jonas Moe, SVP of Marketing at ICE Mortgage Technology to discuss this evolution, from streamlining operations and improving borrower engagement to keeping the human connection at the heart of lending. In this episode:How are lenders improving the borrower experience? The focus is shifting toward a complete borrower lifecycle — creating a seamless experience from application through servicing. Lenders are embracing automation in the “middleware” stages, such as underwriting and processing, to remove friction while keeping human engagement where it matters most. How is ICE Mortgage Technology evolving its platform?By integrating technologies from MERS, Simplifile, Ellie Mae, and Black Knight under the ICE umbrella, the company is building a truly end-to-end ecosystem that connects origination and servicing to eliminate friction, reduce costs, and enhance borrower visibility. What role does AI play in operational efficiency?ICE uses AI to make compliance and servicing smarter — for instance, through “Ask Reggie,” a tool that simplifies complex AllRegs compliance searches, and an AI-powered call agent that routes consumers efficiently to either automated answers or human assistance when needed. What's next for credit scores and data innovation?ICE is collaborating closely with FHFA, Fannie, Freddie, and Equifax to support the rollout of new credit models responsibly. Equifax's new crisis-period dataset — tracing behavior before, during, and after 2008 — helps the industry model risk more accurately as scoring systems evolve.

It's one of those circular discussions, really, where people are extremely staunch in their opinion and no amount of debate can bring them over to the other side. A bit like the secondary tax discussion – you either think you're paying more tax, or you don't, you understand that it all comes out in the wash. Sick leave is a bit like that. People either believe it's an entitlement and you use every single day of sick day every single year, whether you're sick or not. Or you're one of those people who will only take a sick day when you're like the Black Knight in Monty Python, down and out, completely incapacitated, no limbs left, bellowing, "Tis but a scratch," as you're dragged out of the workplace snuffling and sneezing and feverish. The latest workplace wellness surveys say New Zealand workers are taking more sick leave. The average rate of employee absence of the organisation surveyed in 2024 was the highest since the survey began, 6.7 days per employee compared with 5.5 days in 2022. The report blames it on Labour's 2021 increase in legal sick leave entitlement. You'll remember it went from five to ten days, but it's also down to a change in attitude as Katherine Rich, Business NZ CEO, told Mike Hosking this morning. “It certainly has been a change in the workplace culture, and in some cases, employees are doing exactly what they've been told to do – if you're unwell, don't come to work and splutter all over your colleagues. But certainly with the rise in leave entitlements, we do think that it's reflected in the jump in the average absence of, you know, 6.7 days per employee per year, and that's a big jump since 2012 when it was about 4.2.That has a material impact on the economy and of course productivity of not just businesses but the whole economy. “Post-Covid, people really think about their wellness and they're less likely to soldier on like the Codral ad. They're more likely to think, am I going to be productive? If not, I'm going to stay home.” So the old Codral soldier on mentality is very outdated since Covid made it socially unacceptable to turn up at work with the slightest sniffle. But sick leave isn't just used because people are sick. It's also down to people using it because they have children who are home from school and they need to look after them. They have elderly parents, and you need to look after them as well. The sandwich generation needs to be looking after kids who are unwell and parents who have hospital appointments or who are unwell. So it's not just you who is sick, that you'll be the one taking the sick leave. Where do you stand on this one? It's really interesting because when you have that mentality of this is my entitlement and I will take it whether I'm sick or not, there's no getting around it. As a boss, you just have to accept that's what this particular worker with this particular attitude will do. It's interesting too to see the split between government workers and those working in the private sector. Guess who takes more sick days? Yes, you're right, it's the government workers. They take an average of nearly two more sick days than people who work in the private sector. An average of 6.5 for those of us working in the private sector, 8.4 for workers in public sector organisations. Now, why doesn't that surprise us? You know, it's because you can. When it's a private sector employer, I suppose everything's run leaner and tighter. You don't take the piss when you work for the private sector. If you are working for a boss and you know that she or he has put everything into this business, that the house has been put into the business, you're less likely, I think, than taking a couple of sick days off the government, because you can, because it's nobody's money. And that attitude would be pervasive right across the public sector. The idea of taking mental wellness days – I guess if you're in a job you don't enjoy, it's going to be hard to summon up the enthusiasm to get to work. Apart from Covid, the few times during the Covid years, I've never not wanted to come to work, and I appreciate that's a privilege. When I first started in the workforce in antediluvian times, the idea of ringing up the boss and saying, "You know what? I'm just not feeling it today. I might need just a couple of days to reset my equilibrium," or whatever it is you do, unfathomable to me. I'm not saying it's wrong or right, I just cannot imagine doing that. And maybe we should be more proactive about mental health. One thing I have noticed the bosses clamping down on, the people who ring in and go, "Yeah, feeling a bit poorly, might just work from home.” And the bosses, quite rightly, are now saying, "a bit poorly? Right you are. Don't worry about working, take a sick leave day," because they know that when you ring in and go, "Yeah, you know what? Not so good today, a bit of a scratch, bit of a tickle, might stay in and work from home." That's not what's going to happen. They're not going to be as productive. They've probably got a haircut or I don't know, an appointment at a nail salon or whatever it is. You're either sick or you're not. You're either working or you're not. And I totally accept that is an old school view, and may not be the right one. I'd love to know what your policy is. As bosses, it must be an absolute minefield trying to navigate your way through people who are genuinely ill, might be something far more than a sniffle. They might have something a little bit more complicated. They're a good worker. What do you do? You've got people who are having a bit of a slump, a bit of a downtime in their life. It's there's a lot going on. They're not technically sick, but they're not right either. Might be a relationship breakup. What do you do with them? Tell me how you navigate it and as a worker, what's your attitude towards sick days?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 2025 we're used to being surveilled, it's just part of the modern world. But that doesn't mean surveillance wasn't happening in the past, too. And what if that historic surveillance was happening from beyond our world? Some believe that an ancient satellite known as the Black Knight has been floating high above earth studying us for hundreds or thousands of years. Sure it might sound like a baseless conspiracy theory, but why then, are there photos of the craft itself? Time for Rory and Kit to investigate! Start your Halloweekend with some listener-submitted costumes! Brendan kicks off this episode by sharing a few "Feedback Friday" emails with Andy, including one about getting caught playing behind a "golf influencer shooting content at a Bay Area course" this week. Andy comes to the defense of this anonymous content creator, providing some reasons for why said creator was perhaps playing slowly. Brendan also reveals a follow-up email from The Great Manassero's trip to San Diego a few weeks ago. In end-of-week golf news, Jordan Spieth has received one last 2025 sponsor exemption and the LIV offseason is in full swing. Bryson DeChambeau is reportedly in re-negotiations for a new contract with the league and it was announced that players will have a pathway to starts next season through the International Series and a "Q-School" event in Tampa this winter. Gary Player made headlines after declaring himself the third-best golfer ever and Andy believes this can-do attitude is what made the Black Knight so great in the first place. PJ then joins in to help Brendan run through the listener submissions for this year's Halloween costume contest. Highlights include someone actually dressing up as PJ, and hypothetical costumes such as "Collin Morikawa's dog," "Championship Rain," "PGA Tour Comms," "Tony Jacklin looking for equity," and much more. Flashback Friday with KVV sends this episode home, as Kevin stops by to enlighten Andy and Brendan about the exploits of "Crazy" Marty Furgol, a former Ryder Cupper and the final winner of the El Paso Open.

I guess I would describe the Radiant Wave Surger as having both "the power" and "the touch." And it certainly gets "ready for battle." But can it "beat the Black Knight" if it itself IS a Black Knight? Y'know, stupid question. On two fronts. First of all, of course a person can always defeat themselves. Second, why am I doing an extended bit about the theme of the pinball machine Black Knight 2000? You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! The Buddies are back to continue their "summer saga series" (say that 10 times fast) with Pierce Brown's "Dark Age," the fifth book in the Red Rising universe and second in the Iron Gold trilogy. This new trilogy is basically Game of Thrones in space, but with more creative ways to die. Georgie delves into her intriguing study on race in medieval Europe, focusing on the portrayal of people of colour in chivalric romances from North Atlantic Europe. Discover how Georgie's research challenges modern conceptions of race by exploring narratives involving the Black Knight and other figures, revealing a complex tapestry of social interactions and identities from five centuries ago. War, Propaganda, and the Spectacle of SufferingThe war in Gaza is not only fought with drones, tunnels, and rockets; it is fought with cameras. It is fought through livestreams, tweets, and NGO reports. This is no longer HUMINT in the traditional sense. HUMINT—human intelligence—once belonged to the world of spooks, agents, secrets, and whispers. Today, human intelligence is filmed on smartphones, edited for emotional punch, and consumed by millions. It's no longer intelligence; it's entertainment. It has become HUMENT—human entertainment—where suffering itself is curated, packaged, and broadcast. The NGOs, aid workers, and reporters on the ground claim neutrality, but in this war there is no neutral. They are soft spooks, narrative operatives shaping perception rather than just gathering facts. Their images and testimonies are intelligence with emotional payloads, designed to move hearts as much as inform minds. Their cameras don't just document—they weaponize. And in the feed economy, atrocity is a product. The crying child, the drone shot over rubble, the weeping mother—these are not just moments; they are content, scored with violins, cut to viral lengths, consumed by a global audience that toggles between outrage and voyeurism. War becomes a show. Horror becomes a series. The old Broadway line rings bitterly true: “Give ‘em the old razzle dazzle, and they'll never catch wise.” Every side knows this. Every side plays it. Gaza is not just a battlefield—it is a broadcast.Meanwhile, famine in Gaza isn't incidental—it's strategic. Hunger has always been a weapon of war, from medieval sieges to modern blockades. Cut off resources, break morale, force surrender. Israel denies the worst accusations but uses siege tactics knowingly. Hamas, in turn, thrives on the imagery of starvation, using suffering as both shield and symbol. Civilians are crushed in the middle. The world argues over semantics—“unconditional ceasefire” versus “unconditional surrender”—but the bombs keep falling. Mercy, in war, only comes after surrender.Think of it as the classic trope: two knights fight under the king's gaze. One is wounded, knocked down, but refuses to yield. The king cannot spare a knight who will not ask for mercy. Mercy only follows surrender. Germany and Japan survived because they surrendered unconditionally. Gaza, like the Black Knight in Monty Python, fights on even as it's hacked to pieces, shouting defiance through the blood. Heroic, perhaps, but suicidal. And Gaza stands alone. The Arab world mouths support but offers no jets, no armies. Egypt seals its borders. Jordan stays quiet. The Gulf states normalize ties with Israel. Iran uses Gaza as leverage, not liberation. Two billion Muslims, half a billion Arabs, and no cavalry comes. The West tweets, marches, and protests, but it bets on Israel. Gaza bleeds. The cameras roll. This is the grim reality: wars end when one side surrenders. Gaza hasn't surrendered. Israel won't stop. The world won't intervene. The suffering continues, endlessly looped, endlessly consumed. In this war, truth is secondary to narrative. Human pain is no longer just experienced; it's performed, shared, and monetized.HUMINT has collapsed into HUMENT. Intelligence has become entertainment. Horror has become spectacle. The curtain rises daily. The violins swell. The thumb hovers in the air. And the show goes on.

Our exit today has us at two films starring A Tripp Through Comedy All Star Martin Lawrence. The Black Knight Satellite: Alien Watcher or Orbital Deception?
I suppose I can't fault the theming: these machines are, in fact, of a knightly aesthetic. Dylan makes the Shovel Knight comparison during this ep, and it's spot on. But something about it rubs me the wrong way. Not the designs- that's a whole separate matter. But these guys being called the Black Knights. Maybe it's just because they're Sauceless in Seattle? Not quite sure. I have encountered a lot of cool "black knight" characters, and these folks just don't rank. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! A young blacksmith joins King Arthur's court and hopes to win the hand of the fair Linet, but first he must defeat Vikings, Druids, the villainous Sir Palamedies, King Mark, and a very burly guy in a turban. If it didn't feature brownface and a far-too-old Alan Ladd in the title role, it might have been a pretty good movie. Starring Alan Ladd, Patricia Medina, Peter Cushing, Patrick Troughton, Anthony Bushell, and Harry Andrews. Directed by Tay Garnett. Written by Alec Coppel, Bryan Forbes, and Dennis O'Keefe. The 3WHH crew is down a glass this week because John Yoo is down with a bug and unable to join us—or was he afraid of subjecting himself to Lucretia, host for this week's episode. With fear, trembling, and trepidation Steve barved the peril with all the aplomb of the Black Knight in Monty Python, and yet by the end of this episode still ahd all four limbs attached! Lucretia's fancy whisky must have mellowed her, as this surprisingly convivial episode found remarkable harmony about the defects of the Democrat-media complex, and why it is just as debilitating to Democrats' fortunes as the state of California is. Also, was Obama overrated, underated, or just lucky? There was some divergence about tariffs, and we bet listeners can guess about how this split played out. And if you can't guess, then there's only one way to end the suspense.

In this episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1999 to pick a teen high school romantic comedy loosely based on one of the more controversial plays by history's most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Shakespeare is of course ubiquitously revered as the greatest writer the English language has ever known, but it's worth asking from time to time, did any of his plays contain motorcycle stunts, ska music, outdoor paintball, high school students inexplicably dressed as cowboys, Seattle's Fremont Troll sculpture, a large penis drawn on the face of the head elf from The Santa Clause, or Larry Miller rattling off hip-hop slang? Tragically, no, they did not. But, luckily for literature lovers the world over, the writers of The House Bunny and the director of the Martin Lawrence vehicle Black Knight eventually came along to correct these grievous oversights on the Bard of Avon's part.
