Have you ever pondered the fact that the universe is expanding? And not only that, it's expanding at an increasing speed - meaning everything around us is getting further and further away? If that isolating thought makes you feel slightly panicked, don't worry: this programme also contains wine!Brian Schmidt is a Distinguished Professor of Astrophysics at the Australian National University, known for his work on supernovae: massive explosions that take place when stars come to the ends of their lives. They are among the most energetic events in the universe and incredibly difficult to find; but that's what his High-Z Supernova Search Team did, identifying enough of these rare and distant explosions to measure just how fast they were moving away from us.This led them to the realisation that, contrary to long-held belief in cosmology, the expansion of the universe was speeding up; a discovery which earned Brian a share of the 2011 Nobel Prize for Physics. As if that wasn't enough, he's gone on to discover one of the earliest stars in the universe; run a university; and become a winemaker, at his very own vineyard just outside Canberra. In a conversation spanning the genius phraseology of writer Douglas Adams, the importance of pisco sours, and the similarities between astronomy and viticulture, Brian tells Professor Jim Al-Khalili how his supernovae breakthrough paved the way for a revolution in astronomy - and where the field needs to go next...Presented by Jim Al-Khalili Produced for BBC Studios by Lucy Taylor
One of the world's leading astrophysicists is in Ireland today ahead of this evening's Dean's Lecture at Maynooth College, where he'll deliver a talk about the Universe from beginng to end. Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt talks to us about the accelerating cosmos.
Brian Schmidt is absolutely one of these extraordinary people - a normal person who's lived an entirely abnormal life. Besides being awarded a Nobel Prize, Brian was also the Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University for eight years, including during the Covid pandemic. He's a physicist, astrologist and astrophysicist by training, receiving his undergrad from the University of Arizona then his PhD from Harvard. For more than 30 years he's called Australia home, making the move here and becoming one of the most significant figures in the history of humanity's understanding of the universe and our extremely small place in it.This was a brilliant conversation - covering everything from Brian's research to his time at ANU, his views on Australia's education system, the role of universities and how we can all approach learning, education and lifelong development. As well, we chat about how Brian thinks about hard problems, his own calculus in making a difference today on some of the world's greatest challenges from food shortages to nuclear proliferation. This was a real honour. Brian is a global leader in his field - one of the greatest that's ever lived - so to spend some time with him was remarkable, and I hope you take from this how within reach the extraordinary is. The newsletter is out this week on the theme of choice. With Brian on the show to explore and understand cosmology, astronomy and physics, the great Carl Sagan is appropriate this week - “We are the legacy of 15 billion years of cosmic evolution. We can enhance life and come to know the universe that made us. Or we can squander our 15 billion year heritage in meaningless self destruction.”Til next time, thanks for listening.Events are live and more are coming - follow on Humanitix.Follow on LinkedIn, Substack and Instagram. Crabb and Sales bowl up to the Llewellyn Hall in preposterous garb to farewell outgoing ANU vice chancellor Brian Schmidt, surely the most tolerant Nobel laureate in the history of human achievement. Fortunately this gives Crabb (working with her last remaining shred of vocal cord) an excuse to write the Twelve Days Of Schmidtmas instead of trying to make 2023 funny, a task the prospect of which made her want to lie down in a dark room for some time. Sales is rapt because Kate from Alone shows up. And make sure you listen to the end because somebody does a RAP. Listen now on Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Outgoing ANU Vice-Chancellor Brian Schmidt joins Mark Kenny to discuss media reform, hate speech on campus and the expansion of the universe. How can Australia have a functioning democracy when public trust in media – an institution that exists to keep governments accountable – is lower than trust in government itself? Why did three American university leaders get tied up in knots answering a question on hate speech? And what has been the most difficult part of running a major university during a period that saw a pandemic and catastrophic bushfires, among other serious challenges? On this episode of Democracy Sausage, outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University (ANU) Professor Brian Schmidt AC joins Professor Mark Kenny to discuss the state of Australia's media, hate speech on campus and returning to life as a full-time astronomer. Brian Schmidt AC is the Vice-Chancellor of ANU and a Nobel Prize-winning astronomer. Mark Kenny is a Professor at the ANU Australian Studies Institute. He came to the University after a high-profile journalistic career including six years as chief political correspondent and national affairs editor for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times. Send your nominations for our annual Democracy Sausage Awards to democracysausage@anu.edu.au. The original Xbox launched on November 15, 2001. The person largely responsible for how audio worked in that original Xbox and what the Xbox would “sound” like was Brian Schmidt. We've had Brian on the show in the past, most recently to talk about Game Sound Con, which he runs in LA every October. In the late 1990s, Brian was working for Microsoft and began working on the Xbox right away as he'll tell you, and achieved many technological breakthroughs in this work. One of the launch games for Xbox in that winter of 2001 was Halo: Combat Evolved, with music by Marty O'Donnell. And that was an audio achievement as well, as Marty will tell you. We are so honored Brian and Marty wanted to share these stories on Level! You can support Level with Emily on Patreon. Join us on Discord for free. Find this conversation on YouTube and Twitter. Australia's higher education sector is under heavy scrutiny. Still recovering from the impact of COVID and criticised for its treatment of staff, it faces strong pressures to step up its performance. The government launched a broad review of the sector in late 2022 to inform a Universities Accord. The interim report was released in July, with the full report coming in December. Professor Brian Schmidt, is one of Australia's most eminent academics, an astrophysicist who shared a Nobel Prize in 2011. Schmidt has been Vice-Chancellor at the Australian National University since 2016, a role he leaves at the end of the year.

Part 2 of my interview with Vineland Estates' Brian Schmidt reveals a cohesive plan for Ontario to move forward as a united front, with a chosen arsenal of what we do best. Has Ontario settled on what we do best? If so, here's what we do moving forward; Cabernet Franc, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and the two "workhorse" grapes that the VQA has settled on, Vidal Blanc and Baco Noir. Progress in motion?
This week is Part One of my interview with Brian Schmidt of Vineland Estates. Brian talks about his 33 years in the business, the VQA and the viability of wine making in Ontario. This week I provide a glimpse of what is to come with an excerpt of my talk with legendary recording engineer Bill Schnee. Bill has worked with EVERYONE in the record business. His stories are amazing, and Bill has a new book out, “Chairman at the Board: Recording the Soundtrack of a Generation” - this one you need to pick up!
Most discussions about federal modernizing, center on information technology. For the armed forces, modernizing is also about physical systems that require a solid manufacturing industry base. That is where the non-profit Advanced Manufacturing Innovation and Integration Center comes in. It is working to support the Army's need for a half million skilled workers. For more details, Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with the Center's program manager, Brian Schmidt. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
How do you do justice describing Brian Schmidt's contribution to gaming? His impact on the global trajectory of games has been immense. There's no doubt in our minds that Brian is one of the most important figures in videogame history, and we couldn't be more honored to have him joining us on the show. This next paragraph is only a portion of what Brian has been up to for the last 35 years or so. Brian Schmidt began his career in games at Williams around 1987. He soon began working on music and sound programming on iconic pinball games like Swords of Fury and Black Knight 2000, as well as the infamous arcade game NARC. He later went freelance and worked on mechanical and redemption games, dozens of licensed pinball games like Data East's Batman and many for Sega. Fun fact: the 1991 Batman pinball game was the first to use Brian's BSMT2000 hardware board designed for sample playback which went on to see use in pinball games for around 10 years. He then went to Electronic Arts and did sound for a ton of console games like Crüe Ball, Desert Strike, Mutant League Football and a variety of sports games. He contracted with QSound to work on 3D imaging in stereo sound and helped create the hardware used for in a number of games, including many Capcom CPS2 arcade machines. Eventually he moved onto Microsoft where he created the audio architecture for the Xbox and Xbox 360, as well as creating the OG Xbox startup sound. In 2009 he created GameSoundCon, the premier conference for industry professionals to learn how to write and implement music for games. He has been the current president of Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.) for over a decade, an network of audio professionals based around growing the influence and legitimacy of video game music globally. G.A.N.G. along with many other groups paved the way for the recent acceptance of videogame music as a Grammy category. He's currently the audio director and composer for Digital Dreams Entertainment's recent games Mutant Football League 1 and 2, spiritual successors to the EA games he worked on all those years ago. We had the privilege of talking with Brian about his entire career in games from the very beginning to the present. We cover tons of FM music, pinball, NARC, the Pixies, QSound, EA Games, the Xbox, and his current work on Mutant Football League. This is definitely an episode to catch and we are absolutely thrilled to share it with everyone. If you'd like to learn more about Brian, check out Brian Schmidt Studios where you can see his game credits among many other things. We focus on some very well-known words from Jesus who said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). While we enjoy 'exclusive' things because they seem unique and important, we don't necessarily want our God to be exclusive. We want many paths and ways to lead to God. We prefer to make our own truth and create our own life. But Jesus' message remains steadfast while everything changes and shifts in a sea of uncertainty: "I alone am the way, truth, and life." There is extreme comfort to be found in the words of Jesus and we pray the Spirit blesses you with it through this message. Most people in North America can't see the Milky Way. The reason? We're ensconced in a luminous fog of artificial lighting 24/7. The evolution of lighting technology over the last century has made it possible to live, work, and play at any hour - day or night. But light pollution affects all life on earth, from humans to plants and insects. So, how did we find ourselves surrounded by a glowing shroud of electricity... and can we have the dark, without giving up the light? Guests: Hal Wallace, curator of electricity collections at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History Lisbeth Fuisz, coordinating director, Lights Out D.C. Brian Schmidt, museum specialist, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Diane Turnshek, Astronomer; Dark Skies Advocate This episode was produced in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History's exhibition: Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky. Through over 100 photographs, nearly 250 objects, interactive experiences, tactile models, and a theater program, discover why dark nights matter, rekindle your connection with the night sky, and consider how much light at night is enough—for whom, for what purpose, and who gets to decide? Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky is open March 23, 2023 - TBA.

It's called Foundry 4.0—a partnership between the Defense Logistics Agency and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, and the University of Northern Iowa and Youngstown State University. The idea is to provide American-based foundries with a competitive edge in technology while optimizing productivity, output, and product quality. In December 2022, two members of the NCDMM team spent a week in Cedar Falls to view the University of Northern Iowa components, including on-site visits with many Iowa industries. Two entities under the UNI Business and Community Services operation play a significant role in the Industry 4.0 Foundry partnership…the Center for Business Growth and Innovation, and the Metal Casting and Foundry 4.0 Centers. Program manager Brian Schmidt and senior program engineer Ken Carson of NCDMM discussed the project with Jeff Stein of the Iowa Business Report in Waterloo on December 15, 2022. Chad Hughes welcomes Mike Anderson, Manager of Surface Land at Tamarack Acquisition Corp, to the show. Chad centers this episode around Indigenous participation in the industry. Mike is able to shed a lot of light on what Tamarack has been doing in their approach to building relationships and creating opportunities for Indigenous communities through their projects.Mike has been a surface land agent in Alberta for twenty-two years and progressively made his way up through junior, intermediate, and senior oil companies. He cites Tamarack's CEO Brian Schmidt for the drive Tamarack has to help blood tribes and Indigenous communities. Mike explains that Brian's goal is to leave Indigenous communities in areas where Tamarack operates better off as a result of their involvement than those communities were before.Mike shares lessons he's learned throughout his career that have positively impacted the way he approaches consultation now. He unpacks some key advice for Chad in this episode, including the importance of in person meetings and entering conversations and communities with an open heart and willingness to listen. Mike believes leadership from the top, from the CEO, helps to set the tone for how business in Indigenous communities is done, but that each individual also needs to approach people with respect and the intent to build a meaningful relationship.“My personal philosophy on it is how many Indigenous people have you got boots on the ground working on a job. To me, that's a more meaningful impact to the community, because you've got unemployment benefits and whatnot that are going directly into the community and impacting people. … in my view, Indigenous involvement in the resource industries is having actual Indigenous people employed, and on the ground, and an involvement in the communities through community benefits and various other things like that.” - Mike AndersonAbout Michael Anderson:Born in Edmonton in 1976, moved to Calgary when I was 4 and have lived in Calgary ever since. I have been involved in land acquisition since 2000 and with Indigenous Consultation since 2001. I have worked at land brokers, in-house at junior, intermediate and senior E&P companies, and have had my own consulting business since 2016. I am currently the Manager, Surface Land at Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd. I am married to my wife who is also employed in land and have a 12 year old daughter.---Chad Hughes | CEO, Entrepreneurial Leader, Author: website |linkedinMichael Anderson | Manager, Surface Land at Tamarack Acquisition Corp: website | linkedin
For this special Christmas episode, Brian Cox and Robin Ince visit the Australian Wine Research Institute in Adelaide to find out what science can teach us about wine. They are joined by stand-up comedian Tim Minchin, Nobel Prize winner and vineyard owner Brian Schmidt, flavour chemist Mango Parker and sensory and consumer scientist Patricia Williamson. The panel are put through their paces as they sample a variety of wines, learning the hard way that the majority of wine's flavour isn't down to molecular chemistry but instead the holistic experience of wine drinking: the perceived price, mood in the room and even the weight of the bottle. Producer: Caroline Steel Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem
Brian Cox and Robin Ince visit Canberra for the first of 4 special episodes recorded in Australia. This week they visit the amazing Canberra Deep Space Communication Centre where scientists communicate with, and track the 200 or so spacecraft that are currently exploring our vast solar system and even beyond. They are joined by Astrophysicists Mark Cheung and Alan Duffy, Nobel prize winner Brian Schmidt and comedian Alice Fraser as they track legendary space craft like Voyager, still sending back messages from deep in space some 40 plus years after it first launched. They discover how despite these incredible missions we still don't know what 97% of our universe is made of, and how so many of these explorations are vital to our understanding of one very important planet - our own. In a previous episode of the podcast with guest Brian Schmidt of P3R, we saw how it is possible for even a very large race like the Pittsburgh Marathon to achieve zero waste status - that is, the goal of diverting more than 90% of total race waste away from landfill. But what about carbon emissions? Is it equally feasible to aspire towards carbon neutrality, that is to say, putting on an event with net zero (or perhaps even negative) carbon footprint. Well, that's what we'll be discussing today with my guest Porter Bratten, owner of Washington-based Blackfish Ventures and a passionate practitioner of sustainability in all the races he puts on. We're going to be looking at what makes up a race's carbon footprint, how to formulate a practically achievable carbon mitigation strategy, and how carbon offsetting can help bridge the gap to carbon neutrality where further improvements in lowering carbon emissions may not always be possible. In this episode:What contributes to your race's carbon footprintDirect emissions, indirect emissions and purchased energyUnderstanding which emissions you can measure and controlEstimating your race's carbon footprintMaking participant carpooling workOffering a no-medal/no-shirt optionGreen electricity: what it is, how much it costs and how to get itInvolving your participants in your sustainability strategyHow carbon offsetting worksDoing due diligence on and selecting carbon offset projectsUsing carbon offsetting to offset participant travel and shipping emissionsAre participants wiling to pay a "sustainability premium" for greener races?Making the most of sustainability sponsorsThanks to RunSignup for supporting quality content for race directors by sponsoring this episode. Fresh off the heels of GameSoundCon 2022, our favorite guest and friend of the show, game audio legend Brian Schmidt discusses his vision and hopes for this year's Game Sound Con.
The University of Chicago's Paul Poast claims that G. Lowes Dickinson is was the OG "modern" theorist of international relations—and also an "offensive realists." John Mearsheimer invokes Dickinson in Tragedy of Great Power Politics, but notes that Dickinson vocally supported the creation of the League of Nations. Brian Schmidt pays close attention to Dickinson in his work on the history of the discipline. Andreas Osiander also sees Dickinson's account of anarchy as realist, but emphasizes that Dickinson's argument has distinctive "overtones of moralism and voluntarism" and that "Dickinson hope[s] that [anarchy] might be transcended." Jeanne Morefield offers a nuanced appraisal, arguing that we shouldn't read Dickinson through the idealist-realist frame later popularized by E.H. Carr (see also). Unfortunately, we consulted few of these works before recording the episode, so we unwittingly make arguments that previously appeared in some of this scholarship. We apologize, and hope that listeners go out and read the work that we link to above. We discuss whether or not Dickinson is a "realist" (which is probably the least interesting aspect of his work), and examine parts of The European Anarchy, The International Anarchy, The Causes of War, and lots of other stuff. Dan reiterates his view that structural realists are best understood as "liberal pessimists" and Patrick discusses Dickinson's biography and some of his work outside of the area of international relations.

Brian Schmidt, is an astronomer at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University, formerly known as Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories. He works in several areas of astronomy, most notably with exploding stars called supernovae. He also chases Gamma-Ray Bursts, and is heading a project to build a new Telescope that will map the Southern Sky called SkyMapper. Brian was awarded The Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae. Adam Riess is a distinguished professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University and an astronomer at the Space Tele- scope Science Institute. In 2011, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Brian Schmidt and Saul Perlmutter “for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe through observations of distant supernovae.” The work— done by a team—was recognized almost immediately (in Nobel years, at least), making Adam one of the youngest winners ever of the physics prize at age 41. Though we are contemporaries, I consider Adam Riess a role model. His relentless pursuit of topics of great meaning is inspirational. In 2005, he and I competed in a worldwide competition to determine who is a worthy successor to the great physicist Charles Townsend, winner of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics. I won first prize for my concept for the BICEP experiment—spoiler alert: I did not succeed in replicating Charlie Townsend's renown—and third place went to Adam Riess. On the day he won the Nobel Prize, my brother Kevin said, “Brian, you won the battle, but he won the war”—something only a big brother would say. Trudging towards the end of 2020, Crabb and Sales come together one last time. Ordinarily this end-of-year reckoning would occur on stage at the ANU amid low-grade insults directed at vice-chancellor and Bundt-auteur Brian Schmidt, but as with many pleasurable events in 2020 it was binned.
