The Dying Trade film chat

Freedom of Species

The Dying Trade is the debut documentary film by animal rights activist and YouTuber Jack Hancock-Fairs. It explores the meat industry through the deeply personal lens of the filmmaker's relationship with his father, who is a slaughterhouse worker.   The documentary has earned high praise and award nominations for its balanced take on a highly polarising topic. Instead of relying on typical "preachy" activist tropes, the film centres on understanding and bridging the gap between individuals holding completely different ethical views. (Source: Plant Based News).    We chat about the focus of the film and how it represents the existence of slaughterhouses and the people who work in them, and consider this through an abolitionist lens. The quote from "To Kill a Mockingbird"  by Nelle Harper Lee in which Atticus tells Scout: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... It's Wednesday, July 8th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Rising anti-Christian incidents in Israel Anti-Christian incidents are surging in Israel this year. A report from the Religious Freedom Data Centre found there were 83 incidents of harassment during the second quarter of 2026. That's up from 44 incidents during the first quarter.  These incidents include spitting, verbal assault, threatening behavior, and physical assault. The report noted, “In recent years, these acts have increasingly taken place openly, in broad daylight.” In John 15:18, Jesus said, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.” Hamas dissolved Gaza government The Islamic Resistance Movement, known as Hamas, announced the dissolution of its government in Gaza on Monday. The Islamic militant group took control of the Palestinian territory in 2007. In 2023, it led an attack on Israel. Since then, Israel and Hamas have been at war. The Trump administration has been working on a peace plan to end the conflict over the past year. Hamas is now preparing to transfer power to a committee backed by the United States.  Fewer Americans support Israel Support for Israel is declining in America. The data comes from a new Associated Press-National Opinion Research Center poll.  Forty-percent of U.S. adults say America is too supportive of Israel's conflict with the Palestinians. That's up from 37% in 2024. Along party lines, 60 percent of Republicans say the U.S. shows the right amount of support for Israel. That's up from 33 percent in 2024. Meanwhile, 58 percent of Democrats say the U.S. supports Israel too much. That's up from 45 percent in 2024. Trump: “Our founders were great, our cause was just.” U.S. President Donald Trump gave his Independence Day speech at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. last week.  President Trump celebrated America's unique freedoms on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. He said, “Unlike so many others in the world, in this country we have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, equal justice under the law.” Listen to more of his comments.  TRUMP: “We have thrived and flourished because our founders were great, our cause was just, our people are brave, our culture is exceptional, and our destiny is written by God. (applause) “And, as we can see here tonight, after 250 years, the spirit of 1776 still lives within us all. At 250 years old, we may be the oldest constitutional republic on Earth, but our country is just getting started, because the best is yet to come.” (applause) Psalm 67:3-4 says, “Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You. Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy! For You shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations on Earth.” South Carolina prohibits bank discrimination against Christians The state of South Carolina will prevent banks from discriminating against people on the basis of their beliefs.  Republican Governor Henry McMaster signed the Guarantee Banking Act last week. The measure prohibits large financial institutions in the state from denying financial services to people over their religious or political beliefs.  Matt Sharp with Alliance Defending Freedom commented, “By enacting this bill, South Carolina joins Tennessee and Idaho in leading the charge to protect citizens, non-profits, religious organizations, and businesses from discriminatory debanking.” U.S. stock market surged The U.S. stock market surged during the first half of 2026. Markets grew despite war in the Middle East and oil shortages.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 8.9 percent this year. That's its best growth during the first half of a year since 2021. The S&P 500 climbed 9.4 percent this year, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq grew 12.5 percent.  Britain discovered rare copy of Declaration of Independence PBS reports on a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence that was discovered in the United Kingdom this year.  A volunteer at the country's National Archives was cataloguing the papers of Royal Navy captains from the American War for Independence. That's when volunteer Michael Scurr found the rare copy of the Declaration. It was one of 11 copies printed in Exeter, New Hampshire in July 1776. The copy was later seized by the British Royal Navy on Christmas Eve of the same year. It remained buried in archives until this February. Dr. Graham Moore from The National Archives said the discovery is “one of the rarest forms of the Declaration we know about.” Worldview listeners weigh in from Alaska and Kentucky Trevor Williams, age 10, in Wasilla, Alaska, wrote, “You are doing good with The Worldview in 5 Minutes. Please keep it going! Me and my family listen to it every morning at Bible time. I love to hear it. It is good to know about these things. Keep on doing these podcasts.” Jason Oleson in Fairbanks, Alaska wrote, “I think The Worldview is very unique in that it focuses on lots of statistics and shows things that are very alarming, but also overlooked by many other outlets. The Worldview is also something I get news from because it focuses on events that are relevant to us as Christians. I learn a lot about current events through your newscast and would love to see it keep going!” And Leah Smith in Franklin, Kentucky wrote, “I really appreciate The Worldview in Five Minutes for its weekday overview of what's going on in America and overseas in terms of society, ministry, culture, and politics. “The short length is just perfect for me to get caught up on news without wasting my time scrolling news websites! Most of all, I trust The Worldview for your Christian perspective. I'm actually able to hear about my imprisoned and suffering brothers and sisters, enabling me to pray for them. I'm so uplifted by your Biblical point of view! This newscast is a huge blessing in my life!” 13 Worldview listeners gave $6,747 on Tuesday And finally, on Tuesday by 4:15pm Central, 13 Worldview listeners stepped up to the plate and invested their treasure to fund the six-member team behind The Worldview for another 365 days. After 180 years in Australia, the Catholic order of Christian Brothers is closing down – bankrupt and shamed by the child sexual abuse scandal. The Christian Brothers have announced a plan to sell off their remaining 36 properties in Australia at an estimated value of $216 million. The proceeds will go to victims and survivors and their lawyers. Those with claims against the brothers won't receive all they're seeking but the Brothers have revealed they've already paid a staggering $480 million in abuse settlements since 1980. If the geopolitics of Israel and Palestine isn't hot enough, there's now a controversy over control of the Al-Aqsa mosque complex in the Old City of Jerusalem. For decades, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been the official custodian, allowing non-Muslims to visit but not to pray. But Israeli hardliners -- backed reputedly by the Trump administration and some Gulf Arab states -- want to transfer control to a so-called multi-faith council. A litmus test for anyone seeking office as a Democrat in the US is unqualified support for abortion. At the moment, it's popular. Even in Republican states have passed ballot measures to over-ride abortion bans. But can the Democrats forge a long-term coalition to win the congress and the presidency without some pro-life voters, especially Catholics? A growing number of progressive Democrats say the party needs to be a bigger tent. GUESTSProfessor DARRYL HIGGINS is director of the Institute for Child Protection Studies at Australian Catholic University.WYRE DAVIES is the BBC's Middle East correspondent.TIMOTHY KIRCHOFF is a contributing writer to the liberal Catholic magazine, Commonweal.

Syon Abbey was founded in 1415 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. The community refused to scatter. They waited, came back under Mary, went into exile again under Elizabeth, survived a Calvinist mob in Flanders, 200 years in Lisbon, a 9.0 earthquake, and Napoleon. They finally closed in 2011 -- not because anyone shut them down, but because there were three elderly nuns left and they couldn't maintain the building. This is their story, including the nun who grabbed the abbey seal to stop Henry's officers, the abbess who confronted a mob and died six weeks later, and a community that carried the keys to their original home for 366 years.

With the stream to our right, we headed down from the exposed uplands of West Quantoxhead and into a shallow valley. Sky whitish grey. Air still. It smelled of rich late Autumn undergrowth, and faintly of mushrooms.  As we descended, the landscape changed. Became tucked in. Shapes of sheep shifted against dark thickets below. The grass got thicker too, and taller. And the stream got fuller, and more sonorous, with every hundred yards. Eventually we found ourselves in a completely different landscape. A watery, secluded dell. The sheep magically disappeared. Dissolved into the thickets and behind the trees. Running down over shallow stones, the stream flowed through the dell without urgency. Its sonorous wrillings reflecting perfectly off the leafy surroundings. Bright, but not too bright. With a fresh spatialness, audibly illuminating the contours of the natural space.  Here, set below high steep banks of dense undergrowth, far away in the Quantocks of West Somerset, sound and time melded. Unified, into one well tempered flow.  * The Lento box captured this scene tied to a tree during an unaccompanied overnight record in late October. We spent a long time in near total darkness testing out how different angles onto the stream sounded from various trees. We chose one set back from the stream, preferring this well balanced aural composition rather than a closer angle where the noise of the stream would drown out the subtle acoustic reflections of the space itself. The ambient sound levels were incredibly low. Listening back, we can sometimes hear the sheep, quietly moving about. After 17 minutes into the segment they wonder off, leaving only the stream to be heard, and the passing of time, in this natural secluded place.
