From butterflies to birds, experts and citizen scientists unite in a shared mission to monitor and protect nature's habitats. On my show this week, we zoom in on the declining richness of Luxembourg's biodiversity and why it matters. From powerful EU projects to local volunteers counting butterflies, my guests show how citizen science can be crucial to help collect data in a clear and scientific manner. Dr. Youri Martin, Senior R&T Engineer in biodiversity at LIST, is at the heart of Luxembourg's monitoring systems. As principal investigator of the BIODIV project, Youri and his team track protected species using standardised data methods. He coordinates the Luxembourg Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, where volunteers conduct pollinator transect walks and pan trapping to observe bees, butterflies and other insects. “Consistency in data is everything. It allows us to see real trends,  and the picture is concerning.” Over 60% of butterfly mass abundance has declined in just over a decade. Citizen science has gripped John Park, who created Bee Together.  From identifying butterflies to pan-trapping pollinators, John works hands-on with LIST and is cited among contributors to the new Butterfly Atlas of Luxembourg. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not,” he quotes from The Lorax. John's work has even contributed to published research on genetic drift in insects . Joining us from Austria was Gerid Hager, a research scholar at IIASA and a key figure in the EU's FRAMEwork project and Urban ReLeaf initiative. Gerid emphasised the strength of collaborative data collection from farmers and citizens alike. “This isn't just about data, it's about community, ownership, and the cultural shift towards biodiversity-friendly agriculture.” On the birding front, Patric Lorgé, field ornithologist at natur&ëmwelt, has spent decades building Luxembourg's bird monitoring network. With over 120 volunteers, he has standardised the national tracking of bird populations and authored Vögel Luxemburgs. Patric has personally observed 283 of the 336 bird species in Luxembourg, contributing vital knowledge to EU conservation frameworks like Natura 2000. Digitally documenting this natural world is Paul Braun, Digital Curator at the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg (MNHNL). As the Luxembourg node manager for GBIF and site manager of iNaturalist.lu, Paul promotes citizen science through technology. The iNaturalist app, he explains, allows users to photograph and identify wild species globally. "The data doesn't just sit there—it feeds into research, policy, and international conservation." The show also highlighted the upcoming City Nature Challenge, a global bioblitz encouraging everyone to document as many species as possible in their city using iNaturalist. Last year Luxembourg contributed over 9,000 observations. “This is where science becomes personal and powerful,” says Paul. So, whether you're walking transects, installing pan traps, identifying birds or just using an app in your garden, you are a vital part of Luxembourg's biodiversity mission. The data you collect today could shape conservation policy tomorrow. As Youri said, “We can't protect what we don't understand. L'acquisition d'une île privée est un rêve pour beaucoup, mais les prix varient considérablement en fonction de plusieurs facteurs tels que la localisation, la taille, les infrastructures existantes et le potentiel de développement. Les tarifs peuvent aller de quelques centaines de milliers d'euros à plusieurs dizaines de millions.Îles abordables :Certaines régions offrent des îles privées à des prix comparables à ceux de maisons traditionnelles. Par exemple, au Belize, au Honduras ou au Nicaragua, il est possible de trouver de petites îles pour moins de 500 000 dollars, certaines étant même proposées entre 50 000 et 300 000 dollars. Îles de gamme intermédiaire :Dans des pays européens comme la Grèce, le prix d'une île privée débute aux alentours de 1 million d'euros pour une île sans aménagements. Aux États-Unis, notamment en Floride, certaines îles privées sont disponibles dans une fourchette de prix allant de 200 000 à 500 000 dollars, bien que les offres les plus chères puissent atteindre des dizaines de millions de dollars. ​Îles de luxe :Les îles dotées d'infrastructures haut de gamme, telles que des villas luxueuses, des pistes d'atterrissage ou des équipements exclusifs, atteignent des prix très élevés. Par exemple, l'île de Kaibu aux Fidji, s'étendant sur 800 acres avec trois villas, une piste d'atterrissage, un avion et un parcours de golf, est proposée à la vente pour 62,5 millions de livres sterling. ​En France ?En moyenne, une île privée en France coûte entre 300 000 euros et plusieurs millions d'euros.Les îles les moins chères sont souvent situées dans des zones moins touristiques ou difficiles d'accès, comme certains lacs du centre de la France ou des estuaires en Bretagne. Pour ce type d'île — sans habitation, sans raccordement à l'eau ou à l'électricité — les prix peuvent commencer autour de 300 000 à 600 000 euros.En revanche, si l'on cherche une île en bord de mer, notamment en Bretagne, Normandie, Vendée ou Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, les prix s'envolent rapidement. Une île avec une maison habitable, un quai ou une plage accessible, peut facilement dépasser 1 à 5 millions d'euros. Certaines îles très prisées, comme celles du Golfe du Morbihan ou proches de l'île de Ré, atteignent même des prix à deux chiffres en millions.Un exemple concret ?L'île de Boëdic, dans le Golfe du Morbihan, a été mise en vente il y a quelques années pour environ 10 millions d'euros. Elle dispose d'une grande villa, de dépendances, d'un héliport et d'un parc arboré. On est loin du terrain vierge à exploiter.Des restrictions importantesAcheter une île en France, ce n'est pas comme acheter un appartement. Il faut composer avec des règles strictes :Protection environnementale : beaucoup d'îles sont classées ou situées en zone Natura 2000, ce qui limite fortement les constructions.Servitudes d'accès : certaines îles peuvent être concernées par des droits de passage ou d'usage (ex. : pêcheurs ou promeneurs).Droit du littoral : la loi Littoral encadre strictement les aménagements en bord de mer. Nella terza puntata del podcast andremo a presentare il comune di Torpè nel contesto del Parco di Tepilora Il Parco Naturale Regionale di Tepilora è una splendida area protetta nella Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, istituita nel 2014 e si estende su una superficie di circa 8.000 ettari, caratterizzata da un elevato valore naturalistico. Il parco interessa principalmente i comuni di Bitti, Lodè, Torpè e Posada e comprende varie aree di grande rilevanza ecologica e paesaggistica. L'importanza del Parco Naturale Regionale di Tepilora è stata ulteriormente riconosciuta il 14 giugno 2017, quando l'UNESCO ha designato quest'area. Insieme ai territori di altri 13 comuni delle regioni di Barbagia, Baronia e Bassa Gallura, come Riserva della Biosfera. Questo prestigioso riconoscimento ha reso la Riserva di Biosfera MaB UNESCO di Tepilora, Rio Posada, Montalbo e Monte Acuto l'unica riserva di Biosfera in Sardegna e una delle 21 presenti in Italia. Torpè situata nella costa nord-orientale della Sardegna si presenta come un centro popoloso e agricolo tradizionale della Baronia. Torpè, incastonato tra il Monte Nurres e il lago Macheronis, offre uno scenario naturale mozzafiato. Il borgo, con le sue antiche case in pietra e fango, custodisce un ricco patrimonio storico, testimoniato dal nuraghe San Pietro e dalle domus de janas. Latvijas Dabas fonds izsludina grantu konkursu dabisko pļavu atjaunošanas talkām. Par dabisko pļavu atjaunošanu saruna raidījumā Kā labāk dzīvot. Stāsta ģeogrāfe, Latvijas Dabas fonda zālāju eksperte Līga Gavare un Latvijas Dabas fonda komunikācijas vadītāja Liene Brizga. Ierakstā pieredzē dalās Priednieku ģimene. Grantu konkurss ir pirmā no vairākām aktivitātēm, kuras LDF 2025. un 2026. gadā īstenos ar devīzi “Darām pļavu kopā!” nolūkā izglītot un iesaistīt sabiedrību dabisko pļavu saglabāšanā un atjaunošanā. Konkursā var pieteikties gan fiziskas, gan juridiskas personas, kuras ir dabisko pļavu īpašnieki, tiesiskie valdītāji, turētāji vai sadarbības grupas, piemēram, nevalstiskās organizācijas un pašvaldības, kas noslēgušas vienošanos par talkas rīkošanu ar teritorijas īpašnieku vai apsaimniekotāju. When you think of innovative advancements in nuclear power technology, places like the Idaho National Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology probably come to mind. But today, some very exciting nuclear power development work is being done in West Texas, specifically, at Abilene Christian University (ACU). That's where Natura Resources is working to construct a molten salt–cooled, liquid-fueled reactor (MSR). “We are in the process of building, most likely, the country's first advanced nuclear reactor,” Doug Robison, founder and CEO of Natura Resources, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Natura has taken an iterative, milestone-based approach to advanced reactor development and deployment, focused on efficiency and performance. This started in 2020 when the company brought together ACU's NEXT Lab with Texas A&M University; the University of Texas, Austin; and the Georgia Institute of Technology to form the Natura Resources Research Alliance. In only four years, Natura and its partners developed a unique nuclear power system and successfully licensed the design. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a construction permit for deployment of the system at ACU last September. Called the MSR-1, ACU's unit will be a 1-MWth molten salt research reactor (MSRR). It is expected to provide valuable operational data to support Natura's 100-MWe systems. It will also serve as a “world-class research tool” to train advanced reactor operators and educate students, the company said. Natura is not only focused on its ACU project, but it is also moving forward on commercial reactor projects. In February, the company announced the deployment of two advanced nuclear projects, which are also in Texas. These deployments, located in the Permian Basin and at Texas A&M University's RELLIS Campus, represent significant strides in addressing energy and water needs in the state. “Our first was a deployment of a Natura commercial reactor in the Permian Basin, which is where I spent my career. We're partnering with a Texas produced-water consortium that was created by the legislature in 2021,” said Robison. One of the things that can be done with the high process heat from an MSR is desalinization. “So, we're going to be desalinating produced water and providing power—clean power—to the oil and gas industry for their operations in the Permian Basin,” said Robison. Meanwhile, at Texas A&M's RELLIS Campus, which is located about eight miles northwest of the university's main campus in College Station, Texas, a Natura MSR-100 reactor will be deployed. The initiative is part of a broader project known as “The Energy Proving Ground,” which involves multiple nuclear reactor companies. The project aims to bring commercial-ready small modular reactors (SMRs) to the site, providing a reliable source of clean energy for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

Zagrożeniem dla hibernujących niedźwiedzi są oczywiście ludzie (nagle wybudzona niedźwiedzica może uciec i porzucić młode, skazane wówczas na śmierć z głodu) oraz zmiany klimatu. Globalne ocieplenie wybija zwierzęta z naturalnego rytmu. Niektóre gatunki, np. niedźwiedź polarny, nie hibernują. Zamiast tego ich metabolizm staje się okresowo wolniejszy.Najważniejszym zmysłem niedźwiedzia jest węch, 20 000 razy mocniejszy od ludzkiego. Świetnie rozwinięty narząd Jacobsona wychwytuje i analizuje molekuły zapachowe z powietrza. Sygnały chemiczne są też używane do komunikacji. Niedźwiedzie zostawiają ślady zapachowe, ocierając się o drzewa, ale też specyficznie wciskając stopy w podłoże podczas chodzenia.Trudno oszacować, ile dokładnie jest niedźwiedzi na danym terytorium, bo wędrują. – Nasze niedźwiedzie należą do populacji karpackiej – opowiada badaczka. Populacja porusza się na obszarze od Czech przez Polskę i Słowację po Ukrainę, Rumunię i Serbię. Jedyna weryfikowalna metoda liczenia to ta genetyczna: zbiera się próbki sierści i kału w celu tworzenia bazy danych. Na jej podstawie szacuje się, że w Polsce przebywa mniej niż 150 osobników.Niedźwiedzie nie polują na ludzi, ale zaskoczone potrafią zaatakować. Co zrobić, żeby być bezpiecznym? – Powinniśmy się zachowywać w taki sposób, żeby dać szansę, żeby tego zaskoczenia jednak nie było – wyjaśnia prof. Sergiel. Czyli przede wszystkim dać się usłyszeć z daleka, np. rozmawiać. Mimo to, w codziennej gonitwie często zapominamy, że jesteśmy częścią globalnego ekosystemu. Dopadają nas wątpliwości czy jednostkowe decyzje mają wpływ na środowisko, a działania polegające na segregowaniu śmieci, oszczędzaniu energii i świadomych konsumenckich wyborach, faktycznie mają sens.
