In 1892, a woman calling herself Lottie Bernard checked into the Hotel del Coronado alone, sick, and afraid — and was found dead five days later, the bullet in her body not matching the gun she bought. Over forty years later, a young man registered as Roland T. Owen sat alone in a dark Kansas City hotel room with the door unlocked, as if waiting for whoever came to kill him. In this episode of Murder: True Crime Stories, Carter Roy investigates both cases — separated by decades and a thousand miles, but united by fake names, unanswered questions, and killers who were never found. This first compilation gathers seven chilling topics that all circle the same terrifying question: what happens when a story becomes too powerful to stay only a story? From childhood mirror rituals to medical nightmares, from Hollywood curse legends to baffling hotel murders, from viral chain-letter fear to a brutal crime twisted by Satanic Panic, these episodes explore the strange borderland where folklore, fear, rumor, tragedy, and real documented events collide.Inside this special Terrifying & True collection:• Bloody Mary — A deep dive into the mirror-summoning urban legend, tracing the myth through Queen Mary I, Mary Worth, Elizabeth Bathory, sleepover folklore, and the fear of what might stare back from the glass. • Sleep Paralysis — The terrifying real phenomenon of waking up frozen, unable to move or scream, while shadow figures, “old hag” entities, and nightmare hallucinations seem to enter the room. • The Poltergeist Film Curse — A look at the tragic legacy surrounding the Poltergeist films, including real human skeleton props, on-set incidents, and the heartbreaking deaths that fueled one of horror cinema's most famous curse legends. • Room 1046 — The bizarre unsolved murder of Artemus Ogletree, who checked into a Kansas City hotel under the name Roland T. Owen and was later found tortured, dying, and surrounded by unanswered questions. • The History of Chain Letters — From ancient curse letters and religious warnings to dime-letter schemes, internet spam, “share or die” posts, and viral fear, this episode uncovers why people keep passing threats and promises forward. • The 1982 Murders at Corpsewood Manor — The disturbing true crime case of Charles Scudder and Joseph Odom, whose isolated Georgia home, occult imagery, and brutal murders became tangled in media sensationalism, Satanic Panic, homophobia, and local legend. • The Herrmann Family Poltergeist Case — The famous 1958 Long Island haunting where bottles popped open, objects flew, investigators arrived, and a quiet suburban house became the center of one of America's most discussed poltergeist cases. Together, these stories form a haunted chain of belief: say the name, wake in the dark, fear the curse, enter the locked room, forward the warning, judge the outsiders, and finally watch the house itself come alive. This is a collection about the stories we inherit, the fears we spread, and the mysteries that refuse to die quietly. This is Terrifying & True: a special collection of real-life horror, paranormal legends, unsolved crimes, cursed stories, and the strange history behind the things that still keep us up at night.

A man checks into the President Hotel under a false name — and Room 1046 becomes a locked-door nightmare. The death of the man known as Roland T. Owen remains one of the strangest true crime stories of 1930s Kansas City. Behind the name was a deeper mystery: Artemis Ogletree, a false identity, a hotel room filled with unanswered questions, and a cast of names that still feel like pieces from a puzzle no one has ever fully solved. This historical true crime episode follows the eerie Room 1046 case through the President Hotel, the Kansas City murder investigation, the mystery letters, and the people connected to the story, including Eugene K. Scott, Mary Soptic, Don Kelso and the elusive “Louise”. Was Room 1046 the scene of a planned hotel murder, a meeting gone wrong, or something even stranger? For listeners drawn to unsolved mysteries, real life mysteries, cold case podcast stories and dark history, this is a chilling look at how one hotel room became a lasting legend. Room 1046 is not just a murder case. It is a strange history of aliases, silence, fear and unanswered questions that still refuses to stay buried. When a dark haired man showed up at the Hotel President one January afternoon in 1935, the hotel staff couldn't help but take note. He showed up without luggage. He seemed nervous. He said his name was Roland T. Owen and that he was from Los Angeles, but he spoke with a southern accent. At one point, the hotel maid overheard him speak on the phone with a man named Don. She spotted a note he'd written to a man named Don. Several times, she walked into his room, only to discover him sitting alone in the dark. Once, she discovered that he'd been locked in his room – from the outside. On the second day of his stay, hotel staff found him alone in his room, badly beaten. He'd been stabbed multiple times. Clothesline had been wrapped around his wrists, ankles and neck. As he clung to life, he refused to name his attackers. After he died, investigators discovered that Roland T. Owen had been an alias. They couldn't immediately identify the man, but someone seemed to care for him. Someone called the local funeral home, anonymously, to pay for his funeral and burial. A similar call came in to a local florist. The person requested 13 American roses to be sent to Roland T. Owen's funeral. The card attached read, “Love forever, Louise.” Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Owen," but also had to untangle the strange circumstances that had led up to his death. "My impression of this man from the expressions on his face and from his actions was that he was either worried about something or afraid."On Wednesday, 2 January 1935, a young man arrived at the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri. Claiming to be from Los Angeles, he told the front desk his name was Roland T. Owen and requested an interior room several floors up. Staff there accommodated him, assigning him a room on the tenth floor that overlooked the hotel's courtyard.Over the next two days, people would recall strange run-ins with Owen, including a few peculiar experiences in his room with hotel staff. IN THIS EPISODE: A man calling himself Roland T. Owen checked into room 1046 of the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri, on January 2, 1935. In just two days' time, he would be dead. But no one knows who killed him, and it has become one of history's most popular mysteries – The Mystery of Room 1046. (The Mystery of Room 1046) *** Ghosts are spooky – but zombies are even worse. But what if you came across a ghost zombie? That's exactly the terror Scandinavian Vikings had to deal with! (Ghost Zombie of the Vikings) *** Can you raise someone in a way to create a phobia within them? Sure, that would be cruel and inhumane to do – but is it possible? That's what a couple of behaviorists wanted to find out… and so they went about studying on it by experimenting on a tiny child. (The Little Albert Experiment) *** Did a woman accidentally kill her husband because of a Bugs Bunny cartoon… or was it murder? It's the bizarre case of Linda Duffey Gwozdz. (The Looney Tunes Murderess) *** "The voice sounded close, yet at the same time, so far away. It was the most pitiful and horrifying cry I had ever heard." That's how a seasoned paranormal investigator described what they heard in an abandoned asylum. (A Ghost Encounter In a Forsaken Asylum) *** We'll also take a look at a few asylums that are said to be so creepy, so haunted, that you would never want to be locked in there – day or night. (Five Haunted Asylums) *** If you're a fan of the movie “Ferris Bueler's Day Off” you might remember the “Sausage King of Chicago” scene. That person was fictional of course, and the title was played for laughs. But have you ever heard of the Sausage Ghost of Chicago? That too may sound like it was made-up for laughs – but no, the Sausage Ghost of Chicago is a story that is all too true. Roland T. Owen checked into a hotel in Kansas City, Missouri in 1935. The staff noticed his very odd behavior but chalked it up to his drinking. One morning, Roland was found tortured and hanging on to his life by a thread. He claimed to have hit his head on the bathtub and said no one else had been in the room. Though, that was clearly untrue. Police found out Roland T. Owen did not even exist. Who was this man? January 5, 1935 - Kansas City, MO - Who was the man in Room 1046 of the President Hotel? More importantly, who killed the man in this room that day? The man checked into the hotel under the name Roland T. Owen, but had used other aliases including Eugene K. Scott and Cecil Warner. It wasn't until several years after his death when the case had went cold that he was identifed by his mother as Artemus Ogletree. He was found by a bellhop in the room naked on all fours, covered in blood with stab wounds and a skull fracture. When asked who did this to him his response was "Nobody". When it was annouced that he would have a pauper's funeral, someone called the funeral home saying he needed a proper burial and would send money. Flowers were delivered to the funeral with a card reading "Love Forever Louise". To this day, the murder has been unsolved and ends up being more questions than answers in the case of Who was the man in Room 1046. This episode is sponsored by Eko Health. We are going back in history to talk about an unsolved murder that has left many people puzzled…. What was going on in 1935 where a young man can check into multiple hotels under different aliases? Prior to This 17 year old being found brutually beaten gagged and hogged tied in his hotel room… He sat in the dark made mysterious phones calls, magically locked his doors from the outside and had an antorage of men and women coming and going from his room… Who was Roland T Owen, After police found out Roland didn't exist was this bizarre murdered man properally identified as Artemus Ogletree? Finding His identity didn't answer any questions only made more questions like who paid for his funeral if his family didn't even know he was missing until over a year after his funeral, and who the fuck is Louise? We are about to Get into this demon yoga case, It has twists and turns… This one is going to leave you wondering how you even got into that position. This is the case of Murder in Room 1046.
Mr. Ogletree checked into the Hotel President under the name Roland T. Owen; he later checked out dead. Yeah, sorry, that was probably a really lame segue into this episode, but I did it, it's written in stone, so be it. So, how did he die, who killed him, why did he go by another name? Most of those are indeed mysteries, except part of the cause of death. What's really weird about this case is that he used a false name to check into the hotel, was simply hitchhiking across the country to start a new life - not like he was running from anything, just wanted to move out west - and ultimately ended up dead. It appeared he was very much tortured prior to his death, and hotel employees had some interesting things to say about the man, from the room he requested, to the way he kept it, to some unusual characters that paid him a visit. He died in Kansas City, Missouri on his way to California. Why there? What was so important about him that he needed to die? Well, all that will be answered, well to the best of my ability, next week. But for now, here's the set up to the events that lead to Ogletree's death. The time was 1935. The place, Kansas City. A unassuming young man checks into the President Hotel, for what was supposed to be a one night stay. Over the next couple of days, odd occurrences would unfold from multiple voices being heard from his room to Roland himself, being brutally beaten.
