Not many are aware that one of the most successful “new age” authors, Carlos Castaneda, lead a cult. The women that made up the inner circle of his cult were called “the witches” and five of them disappeared soon after Castaneda's death in 1998. In an all too familiar trope, Castaneda's mythology was built on lies, narcissism, hypocrisy, and abuse, yet the witches remain missing. Five of the children were unable to escape as the house burned to the ground, but what happened next became one of the most strange unsolved mysteries. The often covered, discussed, and scrutinized death of Charles Morgan. The story is too odd and mysterious to not record our own retelling of his story. In March 1977, escrow agent Charles C. Morgan went missing. Three days later he turns up in the middle of the night with plastic handcuffs on his wrists and ankles and unable to speak. Just weeks later, he turns up dead, shot in the back of the head with his own gun. There were no finger prints on the gun, and he hid a strange coded message on a two dollar bill in his underwear. And those are just two of the plethera of strange details about this "suicide". Béla Kiss was a Hungarian conman and serial killer who is infamous for his macabre practice of storing his victims in metal drums filled with alcohol. His devious crimes were not discovered until he was allegedly killed in action during the first World War. The first recorded shark attacks in history were part of a group of deadly strikes that occured in New Jersey in 1916. Four deaths occured in a matter of 12 days, and the fallout included panic and a new fear of sharks. The events terrified the community and later inspired Peter Benchley to write JAWS.  The shark attacks were not just deadly but very strange. Groups of shark attacks like these are not known to happen, and to this day no one knows for certain what type of shark was involved, if it was one shark or more, of even if all the attacks were from sharks. In 1921 screams were heard coming from Carl Großmann's apartment. Neighbors quickly called the police who arrived to catch Großmann in a frightening, murderous act that caused the papers to label him The Berlin Butcher.    Großmann is a notorious serial killer but his claim to fame today (selling sausages made of human meat) may be entirely made up. Towards the end of the first world war, a German U-boat, SM UB-85, was captured off the shores of Northern Ireland. The sub was found on the surface, its crew on deck, and willingly surrendering. Legend has it that the German soldiers told the crew of the British Patrol boat that they were attacked by a monstrous sea creature, and the sub was damaged beyond repair.   Enjoy today's Minisode!
