In this episode, we delve into the suspects and theories surrounding the D.B. Cooper case. Despite an extensive investigation by the FBI, Cooper's true identity and fate remain unknown. Over the years, a number of suspects have emerged, including Richard McCoy Jr., a Vietnam veteran and experienced skydiver who hijacked a plane in 1972 and was later killed in a shootout with the FBI. Another suspect is Duane Weber, a career criminal who reportedly confessed on his deathbed to being D.B. Cooper. Weber's wife also claimed that he resembled the composite sketch of Cooper, and that he had shown her a large sum of money before his death. However, the evidence linking Weber to the crime is circumstantial at best. As we continue our investigation into the D.B. Cooper case, we will explore these and other suspects and theories, and attempt to uncover the truth behind one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. November 24, 1971 - Pacific Northwest - A man known as Dan (not D.B) Cooper boarded a Northwest Orient Airlines plane from Portland to Seattle. He was dressed in a suit and tie, and appeared calm and collected as he made his way to his seat. Cooper ordered a bourbon and soda, and soon after takeoff, he handed a note to the flight attendant. The note indicated that Cooper had a bomb in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in ransom money and four parachutes. Cooper's demands were met by the authorities on the ground, who delivered the money and parachutes to the plane during a stop in Seattle. Cooper released the passengers and two of the four crew members, and the plane took off again with Cooper, the pilot, co-pilot, and flight attendant still on board. Cooper strapped on the parachutes and requested that the plane fly at a low altitude and slow speed. As the plane approached Reno, Nevada, Cooper opened the rear door of the plane and jumped out with the ransom money. The FBI conducted an extensive search for Cooper, but he was never found. The case has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring numerous books, movies, and TV shows, and sparking the public's imagination about the ultimate fate of the daring hijacker. In future episodes of the podcast, we will explore potential suspects and theories related to the case, and continue our investigation into one of the most intriguing unsolved mysteries of our time. 1878 - Sante Fe, New Mexico - Rising 22 feet (or 6.1 meters) into the air in Loretto Chapel is what many consider to be an actual miracle. It is made out of wood that so far has been identified as a relative of a tree found in Alaska, sorta but otherwise not much luck on where it came from. It's freestanding with no center support. Also, nobody knows how it was built then or now. We never got to ask because the single, solitary, carpenter that built this did it in complete privacy and vanished the morning it was found constructed in the chapel. He never said his name but was the answer to the nuns novena. Join Tom, Ben, and special guest Lakkin as we discuss the Loretto Chapel staircase. This episode is sponsored by Eko Health. March 6, 2016 - Lake County, Oregon - It was a normal morning for Mary Lee Kelley until she noticed that her 25-year-old, 50 foot Oregon Maple tree was missing from her back yard. It appeared to have been removed with large equipment yet she heard nothing throughout the night. The local sheriff's office responded and investigated, but unfortunately the investigation has lead to more questions than answers as this case still remains unsolved. January 5, 1935 - Kansas City, MO - Who was the man in Room 1046 of the President Hotel? More importantly, who killed the man in this room that day? The man checked into the hotel under the name Roland T. Owen, but had used other aliases including Eugene K. Scott and Cecil Warner. It wasn't until several years after his death when the case had went cold that he was identifed by his mother as Artemus Ogletree. He was found by a bellhop in the room naked on all fours, covered in blood with stab wounds and a skull fracture. When asked who did this to him his response was "Nobody". When it was annouced that he would have a pauper's funeral, someone called the funeral home saying he needed a proper burial and would send money. Flowers were delivered to the funeral with a card reading "Love Forever Louise". A figure watching over children in December noting whether they are good or naughty is not surprising as children in America are often told that Santa Claus does that… however, the figure we talk about tonight is Krampus. First seen in literature in the 1500s, Krampus is the often seen as the anti-St. Nick, punishing the bad children while St. Nick rewards the good ones. Over several years, she reported over 100 incidents of phone harassment, stalking, and even physical attacks by an unknown assailant. This all started after divorcing her ex-husband in 1982. Throughout the years, she changed her name, painted her car, moved to a different home, and even hired a private investigator but the reports of incidents continued to occur. In October 1988, her ex-husband received a voice message saying “Cindy..Dead..Meat..Soon” (this is the only call that we were able to locate the audio and is available on the internet). Her death was ruled an “unknown event” on autopsy. Her family and her private investigator continue to believe she was murdered but the law enforcement investigation showed a different result. Point Pleasant, West Virginia – In 1966 and 67, the town had multiple sightings of a man estimated to be 6-7 foot tall with wings that spanned 10 feet and glowing red eyes. The local newspaper ran the story, capitalizing on the Batman TV show, calling the creature “Mothman”. Thus, the legend of Mothman was born. The sightings seemed to increase in frequency until December 15, 1967. On this date, the Silver Bridge, that connects Point Pleasant and Gallipolis, Ohio, collapsed killing 46 people. After this date, no other sightings of Mothman were reported in the area. Author John Keel in his novel, “The Mothman Prophecies” connected the Mothman to the Sliver Bridge collapse. The town now celebrates the legacy of Mothman with a yearly festival. What was the Mothman? A bird? A UFO? A prank? Join Tom & Ben as they discuss the case of the Mothman on this episode. In a departure from our more serious episodes, we present a more humorous story. Between the years of 2012 and 2015, a neighborhood in Akron, Ohio was terrorized by what is believed to be one man that was dubbed the “Serial Pooper” and on social media as the “Poop Gangsta”. During these years, cars in this neighborhood were randomly found to have been pooped on. Sometimes the poop was on the hood and other times in a seat or smeared on the windows or mirrors of the vehicle. Most cars, according to reports, were hit multiple times. One vehicle was reportedly pooped on SEVEN different times. Finally after getting fed up, one man setup a timelapse camera and caught the alleged serial pooper in the act. The picture was taken in 2015, though no one could identify him despite it receiving nationwide coverage. The poopetrator has not struck since getting caught in the act. If you are wanting to see the uncensored picture of the man caught in the act, you can click here. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/claudiakoerner/mystery-man-suspected-of-pooping-on-at-least-19-cars-in-ohio Join Ben & Tom as they dig deep into the case of the Akron Serial Pooper on this episode of Will Continue to Monitor. When we left off, a search party had descended on the Bender's property but they were no where to be found and there was a foul odor coming from the cabin. In part 2, we discuss the grizzly findings of the search party that day and the number of graves they were able to locate. We also look at some of the evidence left behind to say maybe the Benders weren't who they said they were. We finish part 2 with our speculations of what occurred, who the Benders were, and where did Amercia's first serial killers and first “family” of serial killers go? October 1870 – Several families moved to rural Labette County, KS as part of the Homestead Act. One of those families was a German immigrant family known as the Benders. John, Sr (Pa); Elvira (Ma); John Jr; and Kate. As their homestead was along the Osage trail for those travelling west, they set up a small store and inn for weary travelers. Sadly, for some of those travelers it would be their final stop. The Benders became the first serial killers in America and likely one of the only families of serial killers. In part 1 of the 2 part episode, we lay the foundation of the Benders in Labette County and how after likely killing multiple people their luck of not getting caught had ran out. But days before their grisly crimes were discovered, the Benders vanished. Join Ben and Tom of Part 1 of the Bloody Benders on this episode of Will Continue to Monitor. December 5, 1945 – Navy Lieutenant Charles Taylor, a highly decorated combat pilot and flight instructor took a group of planes out on a training run south of Florida. The planes collectively were known as “Flight 19”. The planes were to leave Ft. Lauderdale drop bombs 56 nautical miles out in the ocean then complete a flight pattern returning to Ft. Lauderdale. Multiple radio communications are documented showing compasses stopped working, the highly trained pilots lost their bearings and could not determine where they were at. They reported being lost in a storm but no storm was in the area except far west of Florida. Despite being asked to change frequencies to an emergency frequency, Lt Taylor refused. Safety measures of flying toward the sun or at a heading of 270 were also not implemented for unknown reasons. The last communications with Flight 19 were from Lt. Taylor saying that when a plane got to 10 gallons of fuel they were going down together. No evidence of any of the planes from Flight 19 was ever found. Was this a case of pilot error, the Bermuda triangle, or a government project? Join Ben and Tom as they dissect the case of the Disappearance of Flight 19. This episode is sponsored by EKO Health. While rain in Washington state is certainly not unusual, the rain that fell over Oakville, Washington in 1994 was unusual. It appeared to be globular blobs about the size of half a grain of rice. The blobs were first reported by a police officer patrolling as his windshield wipers smeared the globs. Numerous townspeople reported the blobs in their yard and on buildings. The concerning part seemed that anyone that came into contact with the blobs developed an unexplained illness. The blobs were taken to a research lab to be studied where they determined they housed two types of bacteria. When researchers went to study them further, their samples had disappeared and they were told not to ask any more questions. What caused the Oakville Blobs? Was it a strange blob rain or something more sinister? Or was this a government project gone wrong? Join Ben & Tom as the dissect the Oakville Blobs on tonight's episode of Will Continue to Monitor. After an unscheduled break due to an acute illness we are back in the saddle with an all new episode. In December of 1900, the ship, Archtor, was off the coast of the Flannen Isles in Northern Scotland in treacherous waters. The lighthouse that normally guided them safely was not lit. After docking at their scheduled landing several days later, they notified the Northern Lighthouse Board. A ship was set sail for the Flannen Isles and when it arrived a week later (delated because of weather) the three experienced men manning the lighthouse had vanished and there was evidence of a storm on the west dock of the lighthouse; while the east dock was relatively untouched. The Northern Lighthouse Board superintendent, Robert Muirhead had described the damage as “difficult to believe unless actually seen”. On June 10, 1912, the 6 members of the Moore family and two of their daughters' friends from the Stillinger family were brutally murdered with an axe. Sadly, because of the interest in this crime in the small town of Villisca, Iowa; the crime scene was so contaminated with people walking through it that evidence was sparce to point to the killer or killers. At one point, the National Guard from the Villisca Armory had to go secure the scene to remove people. While the facts of the savage murders are simple and not disputed, the list of suscepts and theories seems limitless. Some of the suspects include a travelling reverend, a state senator, and even Jack the Ripper??. Though some were tried, none have been convicted and the crime remains unsolved to this day. 112 Ocean Ave in Amityville, New York. A house made famous for causing the Lutz family to flee from it after living there 26 days. A house made famous in books and movies. But what is the story behind the story. While the Lutz's experience may have been traumatic for the DeFeo family, the house was truly that of horror. On November 13, 1974 Ronald DeFeo, Jr shot his parents and siblings as they slept in the home. He was subsequently sentenced to 6 life sentences in prison. The murders were odd as no one in the neighborhood heard multiple shots but it was truly DeFeo Jr's actions after the murders that was truly mystifying. He told multiple different accounts of how the murders occurred, even at one point inventing a new life for him in New Jersey. In July 1954, a well-dressed man presented to an airport in Tokyo for a business meeting. He presented a well-used passport that raised the suspicion of immigration officials. The passport was from the country of Taured, a country that he claimed had existed for over a thousand years but when they showed him a map of the world it wasn't in the place that he pointed. The company he was to meet with did not know him and the hotel did not have reservations for him. The bank that he had traveler's checks from did not exist and the country of Taured did not exist. Not being sure what to do with him, they placed him in a guarded hotel room for the night and confiscated his documents. The next morning, neither he nor his documents could be located. On August 20, 1966, Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel Jose Viana were found deceased on Vintem Hill outside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The men were found wearing formal suits, waterproof rain coats, and with crudely cut lead masks covering their eyes (like sunglasses). Beside their bodies were an empty water bottle, a packet containing two wet towels, and a notebook. The notebook had various notes from their employment as electrical technicians but also had a cryptic note that read, “16:30 be at the specified location 18:30 ingest capsules after the effect protect metals await signal masks”. The men were known to be scientific spiritualists. Because of a delay of several weeks before autopsy, the reason the men were there and the cause of death has never been solved. In the investigation, law enforcement found another case of a man from Brazil on a hill, wearing a formal suit and a lead mask that happened in 1962. This man was also a scientific spiritualist. Join Tom and Ben as they dissect the case of the Men on Vintem Hill. And in a WCTM first, after we got done recording we came up with a theory that was good enough we felt we had to roll tape again, so we include a 5 minute epilogue with our new theory of their death. 5 young men from Yuba City, affectionately known as "The boys" by their family, went to a basketball game in Chico, California on February 24, 1978. This was the last anyone would ever see them again. Their vehicle was found on a mountain road in Plumas National Park, some 70 miles from Chico and not on the road home to Yuba City. Sadly, 3 of the 5 guys bodies were located in the forest. The 4th, Ted Weiher, was located in an encampment trailer approx 20 miles from where the vehicle was located. Despite having food for over a year in the trailer, it was ruled that Ted had been in the trailer for about 8 weeks before succumbing to hypothermia and starvation. The 5th man, Gary Mathias, has never been located. Listen to the facts and our theories on what is known as "American Dyatlov Pass"
What exactly happened to Mary Reeser on the morning of July 2, 1951 in her St. Petersburg, FL apartment? The chair she was sitting in and most of her body was reduced to ash and cinders yet the rest of the apartment was virtually untouched by the flames that had to reach temperatures of 1300 degrees. Some things in the apartment were melted and there was soot and smoke damage on the walls above 4 feet and the ceiling. Did she spontaneously combust as some of the theories say? Or did she accidentally burn herself up in her sleep? Or was it a case of something more sinister? We speculate on these theories in this episode of Will Continue To Monitor. On February 19, 1994, Gloria Ramirez presented to a ER in Riverside, California for heart palpitations and had late stages of cervical cancer. Upon drawing her blood, multiple healthcare workers became ill, passed out, or had effects after being exposed to her blood. Ultimately, the hospital evacuated the ER and 23 members of the healthcare team became ill and several were admitted to the hospital for complications. Sadly, shortly after arrival Ms. Ramirez was not responding to treatment and life saving measures were unsuccessfully attempted. Because of the vast number of ill from exposure to her blood, she became known as the "Toxic Lady" by the media.
