When a dark haired man showed up at the Hotel President one January afternoon in 1935, the hotel staff couldn't help but take note. He showed up without luggage. He seemed nervous. He said his name was Roland T. Owen and that he was from Los Angeles, but he spoke with a southern accent. At one point, the hotel maid overheard him speak on the phone with a man named Don. She spotted a note he'd written to a man named Don. Several times, she walked into his room, only to discover him sitting alone in the dark. Once, she discovered that he'd been locked in his room – from the outside. On the second day of his stay, hotel staff found him alone in his room, badly beaten. He'd been stabbed multiple times. Clothesline had been wrapped around his wrists, ankles and neck. As he clung to life, he refused to name his attackers. After he died, investigators discovered that Roland T. Owen had been an alias. They couldn't immediately identify the man, but someone seemed to care for him. Someone called the local funeral home, anonymously, to pay for his funeral and burial. A similar call came in to a local florist. The person requested 13 American roses to be sent to Roland T. Owen's funeral. The card attached read, “Love forever, Louise.” Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! "My impression of this man from the expressions on his face and from his actions was that he was either worried about something or afraid."On Wednesday, 2 January 1935, a young man arrived at the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri. Claiming to be from Los Angeles, he told the front desk his name was Roland T. Owen and requested an interior room several floors up. Staff there accommodated him, assigning him a room on the tenth floor that overlooked the hotel's courtyard.Over the next two days, people would recall strange run-ins with Owen, including a few peculiar experiences in his room with hotel staff. But just two days later, after repeated attempts at rousing this guest for his morning wake-up call, a bellhop would make a grisly discovery inside of room 1046...Part 1/2Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

IN THIS EPISODE: A man calling himself Roland T. Owen checked into room 1046 of the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri, on January 2, 1935. In just two days' time, he would be dead. (The Looney Tunes Murderess) *** "The voice sounded close, yet at the same time, so far away. It was the most pitiful and horrifying cry I had ever heard." That's how a seasoned paranormal investigator described what they heard in an abandoned asylum. (A Ghost Encounter In a Forsaken Asylum) *** We'll also take a look at a few asylums that are said to be so creepy, so haunted, that you would never want to be locked in there – day or night. (Five Haunted Asylums) *** If you're a fan of the movie “Ferris Bueler's Day Off” you might remember the “Sausage King of Chicago” scene. That person was fictional of course, and the title was played for laughs. But have you ever heard of the Sausage Ghost of Chicago? Mr. Ogletree checked into the Hotel President under the name Roland T. Owen; he later checked out dead. Yeah, sorry, that was probably a really lame segue into this episode, but I did it, it's written in stone, so be it. So, how did he die, who killed him, why did he go by another name? Most of those are indeed mysteries, except part of the cause of death. What's really weird about this case is that he used a false name to check into the hotel, was simply hitchhiking across the country to start a new life - not like he was running from anything, just wanted to move out west - and ultimately ended up dead.  It appeared he was very much tortured prior to his death, and hotel employees had some interesting things to say about the man, from the room he requested, to the way he kept it, to some unusual characters that paid him a visit. He died in Kansas City, Missouri on his way to California. Why there? What was so important about him that he needed to die? Well, all that will be answered, well to the best of my ability, next week. But for now, here's the set up to the events that lead to Ogletree's death. Artemus Ogletree aka Ronald T. Owen aka The Mystery of Room 1046. Regardless of what name this unsolved murder falls under, it has been perplexing investigators for over 80 years. A young man is found murdered - tortured to death - inside a hotel room that had been locked from the outside. Witnesses offer a variety of odd clues that don't neatly fit together: screaming arguments, bloody taxi rides, mysterious benefactors. As late as 2003, new clues surfaced. Sam Borg In the 1950s, Sam Borg, a Maltese-born man had made a small fortune for himself running a casino called the Maltese club. Located just North of Melbourne, the place was known for its illegal gambling with money flowing freely at the establishment. Borg seemed to have everything going for him. On May 30, 1960, Sam was seen heading back home and in the days following, he started missing engagements. When A concerned friend realized Sam hadn’t been seen for several days he called police to do a welfare check. Once there, police found the front door bolted shut with Two nails used to reinforce it. Since they couldn’t get in through there, they decided to climb in from a window instead. That’s when they found Sam Borg’s body in the upstairs bedroom, He was dead due to several major head wounds. 3. Taconic Parkway Crash It was supposed to be a perfect, sunny day in Pleasantville, New York. But before the day would end, it would see an utterly devastating tragedy. Thirty-six-year-old, Diane Schuler, had just spent the weekend at the Hunter Lake Campground with her husband, her children, her nieces and their dog. The family had two cars, Diane took the children, her 2-year old and 5-year-old daughter and son, and her three nieces, ages 8, 7 and 5. They were riding in a 2003 Ford Winstar that belonged to her brother, Meanwhile, her husband Daniel, also left the campground at the same time. He was driving a pickup truck and carried the camping supplies along with the family dog. 2. Woman’s Head Found in the Woods On December 12, 2014, a teenager was walking through the woods in Economy, Pennsylvania when he stumbled across something very disturbing. It was a severed human head. He called police and When they arrived, they found that it belonged to an older woman. Her mouth was wide open, her eyes closed and her hair was fluffy and gray. Her skin still looked delicate and smooth and you could still discern two moles on her cheek. It was also discovered just 10 yeards off of a rural road nearby. But cops were baffled as to how it got there and how it was so carefully preserved despite possible days or even weeks of exposure. During examination, they found that the woman’s closed eye sockets didn’t hold eyes but instead rubber pellets. It was a grisly detail but one that lead to a possible answer –the severed woman’s head was professionally embalmed at a funeral home. The removal of the eyes is a common practice during embalmment. 1. Roland T.
