My guest is my new friend, Nicholas Heckford, who shares his journey of finding out his passion for life, the wine, the wine industry, and all things wine. We chat about where he came from, how it influenced him, his background, education, and where he hopes for his future. Most importantly, Nicholas's true desire is the emphasis of community within the context of this industry. Nicholas Heckford is a wine connoisseur and currently resides in Grants Pass Oregon. He is a Sonoma County native and grew up in the Russian River appellation surrounded by vineyards. His love of agriculture is rooted in his childhood, however it wasn't until his early twenties. He became involved and fell in love with the wine industry. His educational background consists of several viticulture classes with an emphasis on sustainability. His most recent endeavor was a paid internship with Wilbur-Ellis, an agribusiness specializing in agricultural products. Nicholas's commitment to superior knowledge and a deep understanding of wine has inspired him to pursue the sommelier and wine journalism route. He will be attending Umpqua Community College in Roseburg Oregon, majoring in viticulture and marketing. He hopes to start his sommelier classes and journalism classes soon after. https://www.nickheckford.com

What is it like to jump feet first into a successful community arts organization, honoring tried-and-true programming while trying to bring in something new and challenge expectations in a way that isn’t alienating? Sandee McGee is an artist and Gallery Director at the Umpqua Valley Arts Association in Roseburg in southern Oregon. She talked to us about creating a space where community arts and more traditional art practices can cohabit with challenging contemporary work, and how they might benefit from each other. Sandee tells us about the backlash involved in going in a new direction, away from more traditional material-based practices to contemporary art, and the role of the mission statement of the organization in navigating that terrain. Arguably, the value of culture is what comes after and surrounds the event or exhibition in addition to the particular work itself. Where traditional art shows generate very short and polite conversations, more conceptual work prompts deeper, and sometimes more polarized conversations with a longer reach. But we can’t expect everyone to have an expert knowledge of art, so how do we open ourselves up and invite people in, without taking away the moment of discovery? It’s about building an audience by meeting people where they are and creating a comfortable zone where new ideas aren't threatening. Signage is a way in for many people, so being generous with information around the work and the premise of the show is an important aspect of accessibility. How a show is curated and the nuances of the language that is used can have a huge impact. In a small town you can really do damage with the way you talk about the work, and how you present it. There is fear of misunderstanding on both sides: the artist and the audience are both vulnerable to ridicule and “not knowing”. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen we travel to Roseburg Oregon to the “quote, unquote” “Kellom Ranch” and we talk elk hunting with Trent Fischer and Kody Kellom of Born and Raised Outdoors. I’ve been a huge fan of Born And Raised Outdoors since I got my hands on one of their early DVDs, “The Reason.” I own every one one of their DVDs and every July, August and September I watch them over and over again. I like to run their show in the background in my basement while I’m working out. My wife and kids are sick of Born and Raised but I never get tired of them. They’re real. They are genuine. What you see on camera is who they are in real-life. To me, the Born And Raised crew represents the quintessential public-land, over-the-counter-elk hunter. They find a why to kill elk with a bow year after year. AND, they capture it on film in a way that’s real. Just like how it is for me with my hunting buddies. I’ve come to know these guys on a personal level--with Kody Kellom and Ty Stubblefield becoming what I consider close friends. On this podcast they tell us about their secret sauce for consistently killing elk. We share hunting stories and we talk about how they got started. It’s all GRITTY stuff. Do me a favor and go and follow Born And Raised Outdoors on Instagram if you aren’t already. They are the good guys--good ole’ fashion Oregon boys who love to hunt. And check-out their Youtube Channel and subscribe. They’ve got some killer elk-hunting video on there and they’re adding new stuff weekly. Finally… for those of you wondering if Born And Raised Outdoors is EVER going to produce another DVD--you can stop wondering. They FINALLY did another DVD--it will be available on July 1st at www.bornandraisedoutdoors.com
