The recent meteoric rise of ESG or sustainable investing is both compelling and undeniable. Today, more than 3,500 asset managers and related organizations representing more than $120 trillion in assets under management subscribe to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), which are a set of voluntary and aspirational principles that encourage the incorporation of ESG factors into investment decisions. But as more and more professional investors publicly proclaim their ESG and sustainability bona fides, real questions persist as to both their sincerity and their actual impact on the pressing social and environmental challenges of our day—most notably, climate change. Tariq Fancy served as the first Chief Investment Officer for Sustainable Investing at BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. But since leaving the firm, he has become a prominent critic of the efficacy of ESG investing and the greenwashing efforts of many investment firms and a strong proponent of policy solutions to address climate change. In this episode, hosts Chad Reed and Jeff Eckel dive deep with Tariq into the heart of ESG investing and the sustainable capitalism movement. We also speak with Tariq about the mission and initiatives of the education technology nonprofit he now leads—Rumie. Tariq Fancy used to be the Chief Investment Officer for "Sustainable" Investing at BlackRock (2017-2019), a financial services firm with over $9 trillion in investments - yes, that's trillion with a T! After trying to make Wall Street more "green" from the inside, he realized there was no real social impact happening, rather just a bunch of marketing, and he is now ready to blow the whistle about greenwashing. He founded Rumie - an ed-tech nonprofit startup (2013), on the basis that there had to be a more effective and scalable way to close the learning gap. In May 2020, Rumie 2.0 launched where we built and published a new suite of learning solutions, evolving to meet the demands of modern-day learners with an open and free library of micro-learning courses on the essential life and career skills it takes to succeed.

This episode of the Portico Podcast features a conversation with Tariq Fancy — the former CIO for Sustainable Investing at the ~$10 trillion asset manager BlackRock. He's also the author of the delightfully thought-provoking essay The Secret Diary of a ‘Sustainable Investor'.I reached out to Tariq after reading his essay because it raises some uncomfortable truths about the explosion of ESG-related products across public and private markets. While I agreed strongly with his writing about the nonsense of ESG-related investments in stock and bond markets, I maintained that sustainable- or impact-focused investors in private markets could drive meaningful change.I also wanted to think through whether the so-called ‘greenwashing' effect changes with scale. I know managers whose investments are driving positive environmental and social change in some of the most underserved markets — indeed, some have been featured on the Portico Podcast. And honestly, I worry that the asset-gathering activities of large-cap firms will not only crowd out the earnest players trying to increase human dignity, but also tarnish the idea that private markets investing can be a positive-sum enterprise.I also worry about the proliferation of service providers bilking people with asinine accounting and compliance solutions — a phenomenon that famed corporate finance professor Aswath Damodaran refers to as the ESG Gravy Train. I remember reading an article in the FT over the summer about PwC looking to hire 100,000 people to provide ESG advice and thought the madness must stop — we're creating entire categories of jobs that inhibit the flow of capital to productive users of financing. And we all know that scale providers can absorb these costs, thereby entrenching their market position and reducing competition from new entrants and smaller firms. So, you can see why I was keen to speak with Tariq about these issues, as well as the roles the public and private sectors can play in solving the structural environmental and social challenges of climate change and inequality. But we also talk about Tariq's nonprofit, Rumie, which should resonate with listeners of the podcast. Rumie provides free digital education to learners in over 176 countries, including Afghanistan where one of their big initiatives is to create more content in Dari and Pashto so that women and girls can continue their education despite the return of the Taliban.I'd encourage listeners to visit Rumie's website. The Friendly Futurist: Towards Society 5.0

Today's tale is about one man, Tariq Fancy, founder of Rumie.org. His journey from corporate-financier to creating a startup with meaning and contributing back to the community. It is also a eye-opening thinkpiece about greenwashing. So what is greenwashing?   What is Greenwashing? Greenwashing is where a company, organisation, or even an individual goes out of their way to make themselves look as though they are taking a responsible attitude to the environment, even though they are not. In particular, In order to portray an image of environmental responsibility despite evidence to the contrary. In other words, it is a form of ‘spin' where those who are responsible for pollution and other environmental damage try to make themselves appear as responsible environmental stewards. Greenwashing is a form of false advertising and should not be tolerated under any circumstance. But unfortunately, it is a tactic that is utilised by many companies and individuals. In this episode, I hope to show examples of Greenwashing and how it has been done. To check out Tariq's work visit rumie.org What topics and or trends would you like to hear about?
