Sara Bliss, a New York Times best-selling offer of 11 books, had always wanted to be a writer, even from a young age. She went for interviews right out of college and was turned down mainly due to shyness, but she pushed through and willed herself into being a writer.  Having written for magazines, and working for a freelance writer, Sara explains that she was just waiting for the opportunity and topic to write her own book. She got the chance with Exotic Style, and got $7,000 for her work. This may not sound like much, but Sara knew  “you kind of do whatever you can to get your foot in the door.”  Sara is a New York Times bestselling author who has written eleven books including Take the Leap: Change Your Career, Change Your Life, which profiles more than 60 people who radically changed their careers. She also wrote Hotel Chic at Home and co-authored three bestselling books with beauty and wellness guru Bobbi Brown, including Beauty From The Inside Out.   Top Takeaway: In-depth Proposal Vastly Increases Chances of Getting A Book Deal   Sara realized very early on that she needed to write an in-depth proposal for her books because “the stronger the proposal, the more likely [she] would get a deal”. With an in-depth proposal, about 40 to 50 pages for Sara, her agent was able to approach multiple editors and ended up having a bidding war for one of her books, which is something every writer dreams of.  Sara explains that the more you can give in the proposal to really entice the editors, the better chance you have of receiving a great book deal! With an incredible proposal, and an agent that you have a great working relationship with, there is nothing stopping you from succeeding.  Finding the Right Agent Key to Writing Successful Book  “Finding an agent is really like dating”, Sara explains, “you have to put yourself out there, be willing to be rejected, and see if it's a kind of emotional fit”. This was the case with Sara's search for the perfect agent, which took some time, but worked out in the end.   When you do find that agent you no longer have to be a career writer in order to write a book, “you just need a strong platform and a strong idea that stands out from the pack”.  In addition to her books, Sara has also published articles in the Wall Street Journal, Esquire, Town & Country, Oprah, Travel & Leisure, Refinery29, and Forbes.   Sara is also the Co-Founder of One Eleven Partners, a brand content, strategy and marketing firm based in NYC, and a public speaker.  Links  Twitter  LinkedIn  Instagram  SaraBliss.com  OneElevenPartners.com  SUBSCRIBE TO PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe. When your job no longer exists or you are ready for change, how do you pivot careers successfully? Sara Bliss is a freelance writer and New York Times bestselling author who writes profiles on the topics of business, health, beauty, design, and travel. Sara is the author and co-author of eleven books including Hotel Chic at Home, Pretty Powerful, and Beauty from the Inside Out. A former senior writer for Yahoo, Sara’s articles have appeared in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Town & Country, and Refinery29. In her conversation with us, Sara discusses her new book, Take The Leap: Change Your Career, Change Your Life, which includes over 60 stories of successful individuals who left their current position and took the leap into their dream career. We explore the common characteristics Sara discovered as she interviewed people for the book, how to prepare yourself before taking the leap, and why simply following your passion is a bad idea. Sara also shares her own experience as a writer when the newspaper and magazine industry transformed and her job was eliminated. She speaks candidly about the financial considerations and how she has been able to build a successful career by expanding her scope and reach.   Key Takeaways 70% of the people interviewed are making more money now than in their previous career. At some point you have to get comfortable with the concept of risk. Instead of focusing on the potential for future, consider the risk if you don’t take the leap, as well as all the amazing things that could happen if you don’t take the leap. Educate yourself and gain experience before you leap. Consider how your current skills can transfer and be leveraged in your next career. If something is your passion but you can’t monetize it, then it’s not a career it’s your hobby. Consistency of effort is essential to your success in a new career. Marketing Study Lab Helping You Pass Marketing Qualifications

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2019 38:25

Have you got the right mindset? Struggling to sit down and concentrate? I have a little tip for you that will help you here. Before that, let’s chat with Sara Bliss, writer, digital content strategist and more important, a New York Times bestselling author (that's a first on the Marketing Study Lab podcast). Sara’s latest book Take the Leap, features stories of those men and women that have radically changed their careers and ultimately their lives and as you can image there are a lot of learnings to be had here – but more on that later. This is Sara’s 11th book after such title as Hotel Chic at Home and Bobbi Brown – Pretty Powerful. As you can imagine Sara’s career also spans a multitude of writing positions such as Senior Writer and Editor for Yahoo with articles also published in the Wall Street Journal and Esquire to name just to from a large list of titles.   Takeaways - In researching and writing the book Take the Leap, Sara discovered that switching careers isn’t easy as the book covers the good and bad parts of this transition. Which is the same as a CIM Qualification, yes it’s difficult and yes there will be changes in your lifestyle required, but do it anyway as this is where the magic happens – and we all have it in us to make changes. - When writing for different brands, Sara explained that its all about translation and understanding who the brand is and what it stands for. Again, similar connotations can be seen within Marketing Assignments, you must remember who you are writing for and why! You must translate what you are saying into something that is easy to understand and will gain marks - And finally. If you are struggling with writing your assignment, first find an outline and an idea of where you need to go with the answer. Then you can start to give it structure, focusing on the key points. Make it compelling, engaging and above all….. your own!   Mindset So you sit down to start your Marketing assignment and all you can think of is thousands of excuses why not to do it right now, gotta wash my cup up, do some washing, ironing, just check the footi score, wondering what’s happening on Instagram? All those kinds of things. And this is easy to do when you feel you have a mountain to climb, so get off your own back and listen to these short tips that will help you knock you assignment into shape: - Where do you do your best work? Need silence, music, inspiration, a clean space? Whatever it is find it and lay everything out so you’re comfortable with your surroundings - Flip the phone. Put your phone on silent and turn it over, its easy to get distracted by a ping or a red dot! - Get a brew, water, snacks, so you haven’t got the excuse that ‘you’ll just go and grab this or that’ - And the final most important one – take breaks, regularly, only 5/10 minutes but take them – set the timer on your phone (before you flip it) for around 40-50 minutes or longer if you feel confortable with that and dive deep into your work for this time period, then take the break, give yourself some space and let what you have written stew for a little while, when you come back to it, you may see it from a different angle or know you have nailed it first time. My guest is New York Times bestselling author, Sara Bliss. Sara has written 11 books.  Everything from Hotel Chic at Home, to The Thoroughly Modern Married Girl. She's also co-authored books like Pretty Powerful and Beauty from the Inside Out  with wellness and beauty guru, Bobbi Brown, Sara has some great ideas flowing. Her most recent book is where we're going to focus today. It's called Take the Leap, and it comes out in a few weeks, but it's currently available for pre-order wherever you grab your books. In Take the Leap, Sara actually interviewed people who transformed their lives for the better. These are people who went from a "normal" career, to find or create something they loved. Listen To The Podcast: RESOURCES: Book Take the Leap: Click Here INTERVIEW: Sara, welcome to DREAM THINK DO. Thank you. I'm super fired up to be here. I love it. It's one of those where I love the title. What started you on the path to writing Take the Leap? I have written about so many different things, I mean everything from beauty, to travel, to health. But profiles have been the one consistent thing that I've done for almost 20 years. I noticed really early on that a lot of successful people had had these entirely different lives before they found their greatest success. I thought it was really fascinating because it basically tears through this myth that so many of us have, that all successful people somehow follow this linear path that they know what their passion is, or they start really young. Yeah, they were clear on it when they were five years old, right? Exactly. I think for those of us who don't feel that way or aren't on the path that they want to be on, it's super inspiring. I was a little bit lost in my own career, and kind of all over the place. I found these stories really comforting. I started collecting them. I would tell them to other people and everyone always had the same response, "Wait, I didn't know that. I didn't know that Carolina Herrera, the designer, didn't start her business until she was 40." You know there are so many cool stories like that, and that's really where the idea came from. I love it. I couldn't agree more. I think as a purveyor of strategy, and I know you provide a lot of strategy in the book too, strategies are great, but I think people need more stories in strategy. Yes. Like if we have this story, then we'll figure out the strategy. I think that's what there needs to be more of in the world. That's why I was so excited about what you're doing with the book. Now, I see a title like Take the Leap, and I know the subject is all about getting that clarity and going for it. But one of the things I had to ask you is do you write this from the vantage point of always being a risk taker? Or, do you write this from the vantage point of maybe being risk-averse and having to learn how to take a leap like that? I am probably a little bit more of the latter. I'm a little bit of a homebody. I literally live on the same block that I grew up on. No kidding. That's amazing. That's awesome. At the same time, I ended up taking leaps in my career literally every week. That's how I've managed to stay afloat as a writer. I mean anyone who is a professional writer will tell you. The whole landscape of the job has shifted. When I started, it was not that hard to get a publishing deal if you were a well-regarded, not necessarily even famous, just you know, if you were a working writer. Now they really want you to have a huge platform behind you. What I used to get paid for a magazine article versus what I get paid now, those are like two very different numbers. So I had to really hustle and I developed this whole kind of branding side of my business where I did ghostwriting, or I'd consult with brands on everything from PR, I've launched websites for them, I help them with content. I wrote this books on hotels and have been covering tr...
