U.S. Army Veteran David Touchton served in Operation Enduring Freedom, deploying to the Middle East on September 9, 2001, just two days before the September 11 attack. On the FourBlock Podcast this week, David shares the impact that had on him and his fellow service members, his career path, and his commitment to continuing to pay it forward to fellow veterans today. David spent several years in the Army before receiving an honorable discharge due to an injury and going into the private sector. He held multiple positions of escalating responsibility as a Facility Security Officer before making the leap to launch his own security company. Founded in 2013, FSO Services helps companies ensure the best security posture against today's modern threats. In conversation with host Mike Abrams, David explains how he transitioned into a career in industrial security and how he got the idea to start his company serving clients that work with the Department of Defense. He identifies some of the biggest challenges and threats that clients could face as they safeguard national security information and how FSO Services helps resolve them. To close out the episode, David shares the reasons he feels veterans have an advantage when transitioning into industrial security and what steps they can take to successfully move into the industry. Author Lindsey Pollak had always made a point of projecting polish and control - useful for her work as an in-demand speaker and workplace expert. In March 2020 she had a year of speaking engagements booked - until she didn't. Over a two-week period, she lost over six figures in business as clients cancelled bookings and took back deposits. As the family breadwinner, she had no choice but to figure out how a workplace expert adapts when the workplace disappears. Then, Lindsey and her family had to adapt even more when a space heater in the apartment below them sparked a building-wide fire. The family watched from the street as their home burned. Lindsey had to relocate, retrench, rebuild - and recalculate, which became the subject of her next book, and this episode of "Your New Life Blend." Host Shoshanna Hecht talks to Lindsey about rebuilding a life and a career in the face of unrelenting change and challenge, how trying to project perfection can keep us from asking for - and receiving! - the help we need, and how we just never know what people are carrying.
Similar to your GPS recalculating the best route during a car trip, we need to constantly deal with changes in the workplace, and maybe even in our careers. We might encounter unexpected obstacles or circumstances and have to recalculate where we're going. If you've been thinking about career moves, are dealing with a setback, or are in the midst of a role transition, you probably know exactly what this constant rerouting feels like. In this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast, I am joined by Lindsey Pollak. Lindsey is a New York Times bestselling author and one of the leading career and workplace experts. We will be discussing navigating change, dive into her thoughts about becoming a boss, and uncover how managers can lead multigenerational teams successfully. Lindsey Pollak has written four books, and recently released a book in response to the COVID crisis called Recalculating: Navigate Your Career Through the Changing World of Work. How can employers go beyond thanking a veteran for their service? Retired Air Force LtCol Kathy Lowrey Gallowitz has devoted her post-military career to equipping civilans to become Veteran Champions. With hosts Lindsey Pollak and Mike Abrams, Kathy shares personal insights from her upbringing as a Navy ‘brat,' her nearly 30-year career in the Air Force as a Public Affairs Officer and Nurse, and experiences educating and engaging civilians in support of troops and their families in response to 9/11. Noticing how different her experiences and mindset were from most Americans, and observing the pride civilians feel when serve Veterans meaningfully, Kathy discusses why she is compelled to narrow the military civilian divide and equip people who have never served in the military to become Veteran Champions. She shares best practices for employers and actionable advice for individual employees and company recruiters to move from veteran friendly to veteran ready. An award-winning businesswoman, Kathy coaches employers how to improve their bottom line by excelling at hiring and retaining Veteran talent, and as a thought leader pioneer, she equips volunteers to build Military Ministries to cultivate a sense of belonging and promote spiritual resiliency for military-connected people. Master's degrees in Nursing and Political Science frame her practice and perspectives. She is also a John Maxwell trained speaker, trainer, and coach. At some point in your career, if it hasn't happened already, you'll need to work with a colleague – or interview with a hiring manager – who is either a lot older or a lot younger than you. A lot has been made of the differences between how, for example, GenZ works, as opposed to Baby Boomers. But at the end of the day, your colleagues are just people, and overcoming generational differences can usually be boiled down to “communicate better.” NY Times Bestselling author Lindsey Pollak, the author of books like Becoming the Boss and The Remix: How to Lead and Succeed in the Multigenerational Workplace, joined Andrew in studio to get to the bottom of what we can do to aid inter-age collaboration at work. We All Want the Same Things According to Lindsey, “Everybody wants advancement. Everybody wants a manager who listens to them and cares about them and supports them. Everybody wants to feel that their work has purpose. We just approach it in different ways.” So if you're a manager, know that every member of your team just wants to be heard. And if you're a contributor, try to put yourself in your teammate's shoes. Follow the New Rules of Job Searching Regardless of when you were born, the job searching landscape of 2022 is digital, and so keeping up with technology is key. Know that your resume might be scanned by AI Applicant Tracking Systems, and put your keywords throughout. Know that you'll likely be interviewing remotely, and set up your background accordingly. Job Switching Isn't a Dirty Word Members of younger generations, like millennials and Gen Z, often jump from job to job – and that can be an asset, as they learn skills and workflows from a whole bunch of teams. But for employers, offering internal mobility can be key to retaining younger employees who value variety. If You're Stuck, Look Outward It can be tough to feel like you're left behind by the current job market. Lindsey's advice? “Go and do something for somebody else.” Volunteering your time, or working on a project that taps into a passion, often will put you in multigenerational groups that share a point of view on the world. Eric held leadership positions in several organizations, including Procter & Gamble, ES3, and President of GBI Tile and Stone, before coming to KMI to serve as the company's COO, later being promoted to CEO. Many people turn to Glassdoor and similar workplace rating sites to check out an employer before accepting a job. But what about an internship? As summer comes to a close, and college students wrap up their latest internships, many are turning to a growing number of websites to rate their experience. And the companies. That's giving future interns more information and the ability to be more selective. Sims Pettway, creator of the internship rating site Canary, tells us what makes for the ideal internship and why honest reviews help students find theirs. Then, Lindsey Pollak, author of “Getting from College to Career,” digs into what interns and companies gain from hearing honest feedback, and why internships have gone from “nice to have” to “must have” for young careers. Correction Sims Pettway works for Bain & Company. An earlier version of this podcast episode introduced him as working for Bain Capital. Early on in the pandemic, economists thought the public health crisis would contribute to a wave of early retirements. However, today, many workers at retirement age have returned to work. Lindsey Pollak joins NYT writer Ben Casselman to take listener calls about getting back into the workforce in middle age.
Pollak's interest in public speaking dated to her K12 years when she won a prize for reading a Shell Silverstein book. Next, a Rotary Club college scholarship requirement to give a series of Rotary Club speeches began a journey that has not ended. The speech requirement was four. Pollak did thirty-nine. “I realized maybe there was something about this that I'm starting to enjoy,” Pollak said. “And that's how the writing and speaking thing came together.” Finding the right career path to channel the joys of speaking and writing wasn't always easy for Pollak. Eventually, the road revealed itself through many freelance writing opportunities and her first published book in 2007. The key to success in any field is networking, but Pollak admits that many people, especially those getting ready to graduate from college, can find the term intimidating. “I think a couple of things hold people back,” Pollak said. “Number one is the idea that it's fake, and that you're using people, and taking and not being authentic. In good networking, that couldn't be further from the truth. But the second is, particularly for first-generation college students or whose parents maybe weren't professionals, for those from under-represented groups, there's this feeling that networking means you have to know important people. And that's not true.” Sometimes, it takes guts and trust to start that networking journey.

This week, FourBlock alumna and our new West Coast Regional Director Marina Rabinek joins FourBlock Founder Mike Abrams for a personal conversation about her military experience, her transition after 24 years in the U.S. Navy, how she came to start the Military Women's Collective, and her passion for mentoring female veterans and being of service to others. After completing FourBlock's Veteran Career Readiness Program as a participant, Marina came back to serve as a Career Readiness Instructor for the Virtual West cohort of our program before joining the FourBlock team full-time as West Coast Regional Director earlier this year. In this episode, Marina shares insights from her own transition experience along with advice for fellow veterans preparing to transition. Marina is a teal-haired bilingual Super Connector, master networker, and 24-year U.S. Navy veteran. As the Founder of Military Women's Collective, you can find her working with women-focused nonprofits – mentoring veterans and service members transitioning from the military – on LinkedIn and Veterati. When she isn't taking California road trips, playing board games or video games, or hanging out with her husband, daughter, and three cats, you can find her collaborating with local and national nonprofits and advocating for women veterans by empowering them to feel less invisible, giving them a voice and engaging in dialogue about resources. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.
This week, we're sharing an interview that FourBlock Founder Mike Abrams recorded previously with FourBlock Career Readiness Instructor Jeffrey Lodick for an episode of his podcast, “On the Other Side: Leadership After Transition," a podcast designed to bring leaders from all branches of service that have already made the transition to give some insight to transitioning service members and veterans who have already made the transition who may be struggling or seeking support. In the interview, Mike sits down with Jeffrey to discuss his transition and how the vision of FourBlock came to reality. A retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army, Jeffrey is now a professional speaker who does leadership development with student athletes and continures to serve as an advocate for service members in transition. Jeffrey retired from the United States Army after 20 years. He served as a Squadron Sergeant Major, Operations Sergeant Major, First Sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, and Drill Sergeant. He was a Master Rated Jumpmaster, a Pathfinder and a graduate of the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer Course. He has continued his service by assisting transitioning veterans as the podcast host of “On the Other Side: Leadership After Transition,” where he seeks advice from transitioned service members as tools for current transitioning service members to use. He is an inspirational speaker, a member of the National Speakers Association and owner of Change Your Forecast, LLC. This week, we welcome Susan Rietano Davey and Kelley Kelley Biskupiak, co-founders of Prepare 2 Launch U (PLTU), a learning company that provides instruction, inspiration, and community primarily to women and caregivers navigating work-life transitions along the continuum of life. In 2020, FourBlock joined forces with PTLU to create a comprehensive, instructional career transition program for military spouses looking to return to work or pivot into new careers. In this episode, Kelley and Susan are joined by Lisa Stern, Ed.D., FourBlock's Director of Program Impact and Assessment and our podcast co-hosts: Lindsey Pollak, career and workplace expert, New York Times bestselling author, and FourBlock Board member; and Mike Abrams, FourBlock founder and Afghanistan veteran. Over the course of the episode, Susan and Kelley discuss their professional backgrounds and how PTLU started, and the group discusses how the joint FourBlock-PTLU Military Spouse Career Readiness Program came to be, what they have learned together from working with military spouses, what the future of the program holds, and what it means to be ‘ready' to apply to the program. The FourBlock-PTLU Military Spouse Career Readiness Program features live video coaching, flexible online learning modules, and all the instruction, tools, and inspiration a military spouse will need to navigate her or his way to a meaningful career. Military spouses who complete the program also gain access to an expanded community of FourBlock alumni, employers, and instructors for additional networking and mentorship. The program is offered at no cost. As career women and moms, too, PTLU co-founders Kelley and Susan have been helping women navigate work-life transitions for a combined 30 years. Susan and Kelley met while speaking at a women's conference in 2016. At the time, they were both independently consulting with companies and coaching a range of women (from seasoned professionals to young women navigating new motherhood) through life and career transition. Immediately, they felt a connection and knew that they could better help more women if they teamed up. So, the two joined forces first to share clients, then to run workshops, and, ultimately, to create the learning company Prepare to Launch U that provides instruction, inspiration, and community to women navigating work-life transitions along the continuum of life. Their original, signature online career re-entry course boasts students in 26 states and counting. In just a few years, Prepare to Launch U has introduced multiple online and live instructional offerings including a first-of-its-kind online maternity leave planning course, a proprietary family leave planning course on the LinkedIn Learning platform, and widely popular live corporate workshops on Negotiating and Work-Life Synergy, to list just a few. Susan and Kelley regularly collaborate with universities and Fortune 500 companies, and they are sought-after speakers and moderators for conferences across the country.
