Be more gooder than badder. Terrible grammar, and it works better than almost anything else I teach. I stopped saying it on this show about five years ago. People still email me and tell me they're living it. So today I'm bringing it back with a pile of examples: sleep, money, water, marriage, your phone, your kids, your mood. No framework. No methodology. Just one simple question you can ask yourself all day long. Where am I right now? Let's go find out together. Featured Story I used to fall face first into a basket of French fries. Not a few. The whole basket. Then I'd think about ordering onion rings on top of it. That's how I stayed fat for a very long time, and I told myself it was fine because tomorrow I'd start over. Tomorrow never showed up. What finally changed wasn't willpower. It was one small adjustment I made at the table, in the moment, with the fries sitting right in front of me. I still eat them. I still enjoy them. But the way I approach that basket is different now, and it changed a whole lot more than my weight. Important Points * Going to bed a little earlier more nights than you stay up late fixes your tiredness without any fancy sleep system. * Saving a little more often than you splurge means you still get the splurge, and you stop being broke about it. * Doing the hard thing first more days than you don't, and your afternoons quit feeling like a fight you can't win. Memorable Quotes * Moderation in almost everything, excess in a few things. Being more gooder than badder is exactly that one thing. * Drink water more often than the other stuff, and your body will figure out the rest by itself. * Nobody is happy all the time, but your mood is a volume game. Choose the better thoughts a lot more often than not. Scott's Three-Step Approach * Pick one thing today- sleep, water, or your phone- and take an honest inventory of where you really land most days. * Then tilt it one notch, doing the better thing one more time this week than you do the thing you always do anyway. * Then hold that tilt long enough to stack, and every few weeks, just fall face-first into the fun stuff on purpose. Host Bill Calkins caught up with Mike Gooder to discuss the evolution of vegetative crops from breeding and supply to production and demand. Then the conversation turned to the amazing story our industry has to tell and why this is critical for our future. When Bill planned the episode, he had a goal in mind—to learn about how the vegetative side of our industry evolved through the eyes of someone who was in the game early and in a big way. His guest for this episode is Mike Gooder, the owner of Plantpeddler in Cresco, Iowa and the business was a rooting station before such a thing was cool. Bill was hoping to learn how and why the Gooders took such a big risk early on—building greenhouses and infrastructure to support production of vegetative young plants before the market was as proven as it is today. They definitely got into that story but then the conversation veered off the young plant path and down a different road. About half the episode was Mike and Bill talking about how amazing floriculture is and how we need to develop messaging and tell this story far and wide to attract fresh, new talent to the industry. They discussed the importance of connection, networking, partnerships, relationships and how Mike's industry involvement and leadership over more than 40 years opened doors for his business that he never imagined when he and Rachel bought the greenhouse back in 1980. Can you get it? Maybe, maybe not. Canada isn't just one health jurisdiction. At the federal level, Health Canada assesses the safety and efficacy of all drugs and therapies in the country, and in a year — sometimes less — they can approve one for sale in Canada. Once approved, — or sometimes while the assessment is happening— the drug's cost effectiveness is evaluated by Canada's Drug Agency.  Then the ball goes to the provinces. They work together to negotiate prices with the drug maker, to confirm that it doesn't duplicate something they're already stocking, and that its potential value justifies its cost. Only after that can it be provided by each province's ministry of health. This process can take years. It's one reason that Canadian innovations leave the country to be developed elsewhere, and why drug companies don't always choose Canada initially to launch their products. In the U.S., they get FDA approval, set a price, and wait for the market to decide if the price is right. In Canada, Health Canada approves and lengthy negotiations start, with no revenue or guarantee of future approval.Organizations like BioCanRx are willing to wait out the dry years because they're not-for-profit, but companies with shareholders might skip the Canadian market until they're making big money elsewhere. This means Canadians have to wait on the system for drugs that could save them, and are saving people in other countries. We'll talk more about these problems in the weeks to come. Matt and Jen often joke that “Canada no build good,” and Martin largely agrees — but with important caveats.
