The holiday season is in full swing and boutique windows are glittering on Rodeo Drive. So who better to talk to right now than the famed window dresser, Simon Doonan! When he was creative director at Barney's, Doonan never missed an opportunity for maximal effect with storefront displays that transformed fashion retail into spectacle. Now he is a writer and eminence on all things style-related – and he has released a new book about design at full volume.Maximalism: Bold, Bedazzled, Gold, and Tasseled Interiors, features lavish spaces around the world: from opulent Old World interiors to a Bel Air bedroom with no surface untouched, by Kelly Wearstler, the candy colored Trixie Motel in Palm Springs by Dani Dazey, and Doonan's own bedazzling New York apartment, designed by his husband Jonathan Adler.Guest host Frances Anderton talks with Doonan on the season-closer of Rodeo Drive - The Podcast about why you can never layer on too much, and how Maximalism is right at home in Los Angeles, dating “from Busby Berkeley to Tiny Naylor's coffee shop,” and on to today's spectacular concerts by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Harry Styles. “We live in such a visual world that minimal decor doesn't mean anything online or on your phone or on TikTok” says Doonan. “Everything has to be maximal, and LA is at the center of the culture in so many ways.”Doonan recalls an encounter with the larger-than-life Tony Duquette at his home Dawnridge, in Beverly Hills. Duquette, a prolific designer whose resume includes creating costumes and sets for Fred Astaire musicals, and making jewelry for Tom Ford in his eighties, filled his home and garden with antiques, chinoiserie, sunburst sculptures, gold-leafing, tapestries and cleverly upcycled trash. It was, says Doonan, an “unhinged visual extravaganza.”Doonan peppers the conversation with amusing insights. When asked if maximalism, or “maxi,” can ever become too messy, he says he will never judge, having fond memories of a childhood vacation at the blue collar Butlins holiday camp in the UK, which was “drenched in the fabulosity of maximalism.” He adds, “If somebody is happy, and their apartment looks like a good reflection of them, you do you, boo.” As for the ultra-rich who prefer battleship gray T-shirts over lavish displays of affluence, “one of the most hilarious things is when somebody becomes so wealthy that the only way they can find pleasure is to build a concrete bunker on a Swedish Island, and go and hide in it,” says Doonan. Finally, to those who believe minimalism is the path to happiness, he concludes: “I just think maximalism is more life affirming and maximalism doesn't need minimalism…Minimalism relies on maximalism to have something to denounce, whereas maximalism is much too big to fail.”Season 4 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 4 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kathy GohariScriptwriter, Editorial Advisor and Guest Host: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle AlfonsoVisit the website: https://rodeodrive-bh.com/podcast/Join us on Instagram @rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. That's more than 18,000 minutes of tape over six years, featuring thousands of News of the Jews items, hundreds of amazing Jews and Gentiles of the Week, and way too many jokes about Belgium. We've been through a lot together, J-Crew. There was the Saran Wrap vs. tin foil fight, the debate over backing into parking spaces, and endless discussions of what activities might accurately be categorized as “Jewish.” We've shared stories of conversion and atonement and nose jobs, and performed live shows across the country, from St. Louis to San Diego, and Denver to Detroit. Along the way, our team wrote a book, welcomed three human children and six podcast babies, and even got to be part of a proposal and then a wedding. Today, we're celebrating everything that makes Unorthodox the #1 Jewish podcast with a special episode hosted by friend-of-the-show and “Making It” judge Simon Doonan. Welcome to Anxiously, a new podcast from Tablet Studios.  Each week hosts Lisa Sandell and Aimee Friedman grapple with one of their anxieties—from the trivial to the existential—in a humorous and heartfelt way. From germs to mortality, they're tackling it all. They're helped along the way by smart and entertaining guests who offer perspective and advice.  This week, Lisa and Aimee are anxious about getting older, and wondering if they're getting less relevant. They're joined by fashion commentator and bon vivant Simon Doonan, who explains that confidence is the secret ingredient to style, praises the virtues of “embracing hagdom,” and suggests that Lisa and Aimee adopt a signature sartorial flourish, like a motorcycle jacket.    Like the show? Oofta, this week is a doozy. Some of it old hat: Catie is still crying and Jenascia is still short. The models meet Simon Doonan and Betsey Johnson, but at the photoshoot this week, the remaining nine impersonate famous celebrities, and Xiomara is given Grace Jones. So this is our first impasse of Blackface in ANTM, and it’s rough to say the least. But at least Janice is having a great time.

In 2014, Mickey Boardman broke the Internet. As Paper Magazine's editorial director, he is the man responsible for the infamous Jean-Paul Goude shoot — "Break The Internet Kim Kardashian." The shoot featured the reality TV star naked and glistening, slick with baby oil. The images spread like wildfire across the Internet, turned into a plethora of memes, and were commented on heavily across social-media platforms. It was, without a doubt, the most controversial cover of the year. Boardman has also worked with other provocative artists such as Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus on covers for the magazine. The editor grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, joining Paper Magazine as an intern after studying Fashion Design at Parson's School of Design. Since 1993 he has written an advice column “Ask Mr. Mickey” for the magazine, notorious for its witty responses to reader's woeful questions. Boardman recently launched another weekly column, "Fat And All That," in which he discusses his lifelong struggle with weight and body issues and society's attitudes towards overweight people. Boardman is an institution on the New York social and fashion scenes, with New York Magazine recognising him as one of the “Most Photographed Faces in New York.” Described by David Hershkovits to New York Magazine as “a great connector and a great people person,” he has been featured in a number of fashion books including "Smile i-D: Fashion & Style" and "Simon Doonan's Eccentric Glamour." Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview  Simon Doonan and Dayna Isom Johnson of NBC's Making It. From executive producers and hosts Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman comes a uniquely lighthearted competition series reuniting two of pop culture's biggest BFFs and celebrating the creativity and craftiness in all of us.   In this six-episode competition, eight of the most talented makers from across the country will take on a variety of handmade projects with the hopes of impressing Poehler, Offerman and our expert judges, Simon Doonan and Dayna Isom Johnson. Poehler and Offerman both share a love of, and passion for, craftsmanship, albeit from different perspectives. Poehler is a self-proclaimed crafting novice who has long harbored a secret appreciation for those who can imagine and execute incredible things by hand. Offerman is a New York Times best-selling author in the woodworking space and is well known for his love for making a variety of objects himself.   Every show will revolve around a central theme that draws inspiration from hugely popular, nationwide trends in crafting and DIY the whole family can enjoy.        Each episode of the competition will consist of two projects that allow the makers to demonstrate their specialized talent while sharing skilled insights and touching personal stories. First, the "faster-craft" round will be a timed challenge that will test their ability to not only work quickly but imaginatively as well. Next, the makers will move to the "master craft collection," a one-of-a-kind themed challenge in which the competitors will need to use their expertise and get inventive in order to assemble a winning craft that fits the theme of that week.

It's been a year of How Was Your Week! Can you believe it? Remember a year ago when the podcast began? That's when I was carrying you!  On this One Year Anniversary episode of HWYW, Barney's creative ambassador, author, humorist, bon-vivant and general full-on f'ing icon SIMON DOONAN joins Julie to discuss his new book, Gay Men Don't Get Fat, the influence of celebrity culture on style, how marvelous sweeping generalizations are, and numerous important facts about Raquel Welch, not least of which is that she and Camille Paglia are good friends (!!!) Then, author and Monkees historian ERIC LEFCOWITZ sits down with Julie, the week after Davy Jones passed away, to talk about his memories of Davy, the rivalries in the group, the mad beauty of HEAD, and what happened after the band got together for Headquarters. Warning: this is a pretty intense conversation between two hardcore Monkees nerds. If it's Greek to you, consider buying Eric's book first! Plus, Julie expresses concern about Pat Kiernan's eye not being on the prize, bemoans Jesus's husky understudy, teaches her cat how to use a scratching post with her own stupid fingernails, and reminds a certain enemy of the show that things are usually about Uggie. A podcast that is so much better than the "paper"-themed one year anniversary gift that is customary. Nobody wants your dead trees, grandma!
