Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

Everyone's been waiting for Dick Ebert to review a Wes Anderson movie. Today is that day. Will Shat The Movies' everyman embrace the whimsy and sophistication of "Rushmore," or will our red-blooded podcast elder scoff at the pretentious eccentricity of a wannabe auteur? Calling Anderson the "Beck of directors," Big D questions whether he hates the "Rushmore" director or hates himself. Ash explains his distinct style of filming, and Gene argues that Jason Schwartzman's Max is a real dick. They all agree on one point: Bill Murray is absolutely wonderful in this movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew also share a vocabulary lesson, analyze Anderson's use of slow motion, listen while Gene does math, and debate whether Max's stage productions help or hurt the movie overall. On the latest episode, the Mikes are of two minds about this one - is it a grossly good time or is it just gross? What we do know is that it's got a pretty great cast - Jeff Goldblum (obviously), Alec Baldwin, Carrie-Anne Moss, Luke Wilson, all led by a compelling performance from a pre-TWILIGHT Nikki Reed. It's time to talk about 2006's MINI'S FIRST TIME!

In this episode I interview an absolutely incredible guest by the name of Alexander Kane. Imagine being 35 years old living in a small town in Georgia. You have 6 kids and then just decide one day that you are going to quit your day job to make a name for yourself in the movie business. Well that is exactly what he did. After a short stint trying his had at acting, he realized that if he was going to succeed, he needed to be in control of his future and so he decided to produce his own projects.  Facing rejection everywhere, he finally raised the money he needed for his first film, with the mayor of the town writing the first check.  Since then he has went on to produce several projects with major celebrities such as Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson and Luke Wilson starring in his films. Even crazier is he didn't go to Hollywood to do it. He brought Hollywood to his small town for all of his movies putting the town of Fitzgerald on the map. In this interview, Alex shares his story, his mindset, and his vision and I dare you to listen to this episode and not leave thinking 10 times bigger than you currently do now.  Enjoy!   Connect with Alexander Kane Facebook: Alexander Kane Instagram @siralexanderkane   Connect with Mentor Nation: Instagram: @mentornationpodcast Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5TKA2_zaflKgLp7-5lUmpg mentornationpodcast.com

The Superhero Show Show #396It Doesn't Bother Supergirl to be CourageousThe Taste Buds are checking in with Supergirl on an all-new Superhero Show Show! With Mike still on vacation, and Cassie having no intentions to do the show with just Ryan, she makes a couple of calls this time. The first call she makes is Katelynn. Obviously. But she also reaches out to old-school guest and fan favorite David Lumb! What are they going to talk about during this momentous occasion? Why Supergirl, of course! It's a been a million hot minutes since Kara was in the hot seat, so the Taste Buds check in one last time before her impending season finale to catch-up and see how things are going. Supergirl hasn't been the strongest show after the last couple of seasons. Has this episode made a return to those fun and furious early days? With the 400th episode of this podcast looming on them, Cassie and the Boyz have some housework to do as well. First up is the continuation of the Bracket 400, and it's the DC portion! The kings of network television, the shows that are based on Detective Comics Comics have been the bread and butter for this podcast since its inception. Now it's time to move on from 8 of them, in rude fashion. Can Supergirl move on the DC Elite 8? Or will they just take this opportunity to keep talking about how much they liked Watchmen? They're also trying to get rid of all of the Shushies, and this week it's Best Supporting Actor. Last year's winner was one of the few non-Watchmen, with Luke Wilson's Pat Doogan taking it down. Does he have what he takes to beat Watchmen during a year with no Watchmen? Probably. All of that, plus reviews, updates, and discussions on every other television show based on a comic book, including Lucifer, Doom Patrol, Riverdale, Titans, The Walking Dead, What If...?, and Y:The Last Man. Lisa Jennett (aka Sunshine) is someone that was at the top of my list when I dreamed big about future podcast guests. Little did I know she would actually say YES and come on the podcast so soon! One of the most compelling things about Lisa has to be the stories she tells and the words she wraps around the way she sees life. Lisa owns her own landscaping company here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that grew up out of a challenging season in her life as a single mom. Years later, she is now married to Tank (one of Scott's favorite people in the world) and they have both been a highlight for us during our chapter here in Texas – which you'll hear more about in the episode. She's also written a book called, When I Last Saw Me: The Memoir of Sammi Bass that you'll love. Lisa has a business called Cheers + Amen that exists to empower good ideas and encourage people with what is created (linked below) and this episode embodies that heartbeat through and through. Everybody is talking about Netflix's original documentary "Pray Away," in which ex-leaders and a survivor of the so-called "conversion therapy" movement speak out about its harm to the LGBTQ+ community and its devastating persistence. If you haven't seen it, go ahead and bump it to the top of your queue. Although it's been widely applauded, there are, of course, those who find it offensive, biased, and demeaning to Christianity. I'll bet you can guess a few of the primary critics...   Joining us to talk about one such article is our good friend, and conversion therapy survivor, and LGBTQ+ activist Luke Wilson! He has written extensively about the mental, emotional, and spiritual toll that four years of conversion therapy took on him. He has worked diligently to shine a light on the harmful and dangerous practices employed by institutions like Liberty University, and has made recent appearances on shows like Gangster Capitalism, Straight White American Jesus, Fundie Friday, and many others. EPISODE 6: LET'S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING | Filipino Creation Myths In this episode, we take a step back and look to the very beginning, to the tales of creation from all around the Philippines. Some stories are familiar, some completely new, others, just totally gross. One thing remains very Filipino -- there sure is a lot of drama. Listen in to hear about the reasons why we have the moon, the stars, and why we owe the variety of our country's races and tribes to some good old-fashioned sibling rivalry and hubris. Also, learn why exfoliation, and not pottery, is one of the skills one needs to be a world-maker. --- Corrections: We mistakenly attribute surfer voice to Luke Wilson, we had meant to say Owen Wilson. We also said Zeus ate his children when actually Cronus (his father) ate his children. --- The Gods Must Be Crazy is a podcast on Philippine Mythology. I just celebrated my 29th birthday and it seems like birthdays, anniversaries, and new years are natural times to reflect. This episode highlights 29 lessons I have learned in my first 29 years of life. For those of you who love a list, here are the 29 lessons covered in this conversation – Take a summer vacation, even if it's on a budget Bodies change over the years Relationships change too Positivity is underrated Trusting God, believing in Jesus, following the Holy Spirit is wild and unexpected For most of us, our parents did the best they could and still made mistakes – they are humans too Take risks When it comes to your dreams and ambitions, do the next right thing (I'm looking at you Bob Goff) Have people in your life who are a few years or seasons ahead of you Friends are one of the best parts of life Counseling is cool Stay teachable Health is a journey Having conversations about Jesus and faith don't have to be rigid or like a formula – ask questions and seek to understand Don't just read non-fiction, read the fun stuff too (stories, fiction, biographies) Be careful to not only listen to voices that sound like yours Animals are the best Fear, control, and perfectionism are all different faces of the same issue Cook at home as much as you can The Church is imperfect at best and has been hurtful at worst. But there's hope and there are still many good churches and pastors in our communities trying to love people well Be kind to strangers Know your worth professionally and raise your hand for big projects Set up your physical space the way you like with purpose Have the wedding you want Don't deflect the hard stuff Try to travel, even if it's the state next door or a new city your friend moved to When it comes to money, live below your means and invest in the things that matter Grief is a process and it looks different for everyone in every season Prayer, faith, and relationships with God are messy and imperfect – and that's normal As always, incredible sound editing by Luke Wilson at Veritas Podcasting

Book Vs Movie: “Legally Blonde” The Amanda Brown Story Vs the Reese Witherspoon Movie  The Margos are donning their pink outfits and getting our nails done in preparation for one of our most fun episodes--Legally Blonde. The original writer is Amanda Brown who based some of the stories about Elle Woods on her experience as a  law student at Stanford University. As she said at the time ‘I wrote it all on pink paper with my furry pink pen.” It has an unusual publishing history as it was rejected by every major publishing house but became a bidding war with the movie studios. MGM won the bid and Reese Witherspoon was set to star.  Screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith spent two weeks at Stanford Law School in 2000 to get a flavor of what campus life is like. Reese Witherspoon spent hundreds of dollars on a bar tab for a group of sorority girls to pick up their lingo and a movie was created.  The original story is missing a few things from the beloved film including the character of Emmett Richmond (played by Luke Wilson) and Elle actually working hard to get into law school.  At first, in the age of raunchy films like American Pie being popular with audiences, the movie had an edgier quality. But writers McCullah Lutz & Smith decided to add more romance (and NOT with her law professor,) give her favorite manicurist her own backstory and change the plot of the murder trials.  The film was a massive hit when released and its feminist slant and fashions inspired generations of women to become lawyers. There was a sequel in 2003 and a musical that appeared on both Broadway and the London stage.  So, between the novel and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The journey of the novel to screenplay Biggest changes between book & movie The casting process and how the wardrobe is the main factor of the film's popularity The cast: Reese Witherspoon (Elle Woods,) Moonie (Bruiser Woods,) Selma Blair (Vivian,) Luke Wilson (Emmett Richmond,) Matthew Davis (Warner,) Victor Garber (Professor Callahan,) Jennifer Coolidge (Paulette,) Holland Taylor (Professor Stromwell,) Ali Larter (Brooke,) Jessica Cauffiel (Margot,) and Linda Cardellini (Chutney Windham.)  Clips used: Elle's entrance video Legally Blonde trailer First day of school Elle meets Emmett  Bend and Snap! Former Longhorns' football player Breckyn Hager joins the Flagship Podcast interview this week to talk about how he ended up with a starring role in the soon-to-be-released movie "12 Mighty Orphans," a true story about a Fort Worth football team made up of orphans in the late 1930s that went on to become one of the best teams in the state of Texas. The movie is based on a book written by Jim Dent and stars Luke Wilson, Robert Duvall and Martin Sheen, among others, and is due to be released on June 20.  Hager talks about how he was training for the 2019 NFL Draft when he became aware of the film being made and its need for live-action football scenes. Having made a short film while he was a student at Texas, Hager has always had a fascination with making films and ended up auditioning and landing the role of Myrle Greathouse, a stellar running back and defensive lineman from Abilene who went on to play for Oklahoma under legendary coach Bud Wilkinson in the 1940s. It was said at the time that no defensive player hit harder than Greathouse, who ended up being roommates with OU teammate Darrell K Royal. Greathouse goes up against the Fort Worth orphanage's football team, known as the Mighty Mites, and Hager talks about how hard he hit the actors in those scenes. (Hint: At least one actor complained to his agent.) Hager talks about another film in which he makes an appearance - "The Blazing World" - which has yet to be released. Hager and his father, Britt Hager, UT's all-time leading tackler (499 tackles from 1985-88) have formed a film production company and are now looking at developing other projects. Hager shares a cool moment that occurred between Duvall, an Academy Award-winning actor, and Britt Hager during the filming of 12 Mighty Orphans. Hager said he's been trying to keep up with the Longhorns' football team and is excited to see what new coach Steve Sarkisian can do with the program. Learn more about your ad choices.
