In supporter Mike's last pick and appearance he went with a classic 90's British flick, Trainspotting. And this time he's swung the dial to little renowned sword and sorcery adventure, Dragonslayer! Dragonslayer (1981) was an ambitious collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, marking a rare foray into darker, more mature fantasy for Disney. Directed by Matthew Robbins, the film was developed as a gritty and realistic take on medieval mythology, deviating from the lighter tone often associated with fantasy films of the time. The screenplay, written by Robbins and Hal Barwood, aimed to explore themes of faith, power, and heroism. Principal photography took place in the rugged landscapes of Wales and Scotland, chosen for their authentic medieval atmosphere, and the production faced significant challenges in capturing the epic scope of the story while dealing with unpredictable weather and remote locations. The standout feature of the film was its groundbreaking special effects, particularly the creation of the dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. To bring the creature to life, the production team employed a combination of animatronics, puppetry, and the pioneering go-motion technique developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). This approach allowed for smoother, more lifelike movements than traditional stop-motion animation. Phil Tippett, the lead visual effects artist, played a crucial role in crafting Vermithrax, which has since been hailed as one of the most convincing cinematic dragons ever created. Despite mixed reviews upon release, Dragonslayer gained a cult following and remains a landmark in special effects innovation, bridging the gap between the practical techniques of the past and the CGI-dominated future of filmmaking. Armed with his late master's enchanted amulet and his growing confidence, Galen ventures into danger, facing the dragon's fiery wrath and uncovering political intrigue that reveals the kingdom's rulers have sinister motives of their own. Combining themes of heroism, faith, and sacrifice, the film delivers a gritty, visually striking fantasy tale that stands out for its groundbreaking special effects and its unflinching portrayal of medieval darkness. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In 1983, Walt Disney Productions released an interesting experiment: A children's horror movie set in an old-timey American town menaced by an evil carnival, with a screenplay adapted by Ray Bradbury himself from his classic novel. Doesn't sound very Disney, does it? It's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES.

In the early 1980s, Walt Disney Productions was struggling, largely bolstered by the success of its theme parks. Within fifteen years, however, it had become one of the most powerful entertainment conglomerates in the world. Staging a Comeback: Broadway, Hollywood, and the Disney Renaissance (Rutgers University Press, 2023) by Dr. Peter Kunze argues that far from an executive feat, this impressive turnaround was accomplished in no small part by the storytellers recruited during this period. Drawing from archival research, interviews, and textual analysis, Dr. Kunze examines how the hiring of theatrically trained talent into managerial and production positions reorganized the lagging animation division and revitalized its output. By Aladdin, it was clear that animation—not live action—was the center of a veritable “renaissance” at Disney, and the animated musicals driving this revival laid the groundwork for the company's growth into Broadway theatrical production. The Disney Renaissance not only reinvigorated the Walt Disney Company but both reflects and influenced changes in Broadway and Hollywood more broadly. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. The RSA gang reached 500 subscribers, just hitting 800 as of recent, now they get to give you the fans a treat! One of the most iconic Walt Disney animated movies, Robin Hood! The gang promised you a Disney movie to celebrate hitting 500 subs, and they now are promising more Disney movies to come. Robin Hood is a 1973 American animated musical adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. Produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is based on the English folktale "Robin Hood". The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian. The film features the voices of Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Peter Ustinov, Pat Buttram, Monica Evans, Terry-Thomas, Roger Miller, and Carole Shelley. The idea to adapt Robin Hood into an animated feature was dated back to Walt Disney's interest in the tale of Reynard the Fox following the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The idea was repeatedly shelved for several decades. In 1968, Ken Anderson pitched a film adaptation of Robin Hood, incorporating ideas from Reynard the Fox by using anthropomorphic animals rather than humans. The project was approved, becoming the first completely "post-Walt" animated feature and the first with an entirely non-human cast. Robin Hood was released on November 8, 1973. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was nonetheless a box-office success, grossing $33 million worldwide against a production budget of $5 million. Although some retrospective reviews have called out its use of recycled animation, the film's reputation has grown positively over time and has since become a cult classic.

It's WHAT WOULD WALT HAVE DONE? MONTH on Escape From Vault Disney, as we devote March 2024 to movies, featurettes and/or TV specials produced by Walt Disney Productions during that odd, awkward inbetween time from 1968-1984, after Walt died but before Eisner took over! And for our first episode of What Would Walt Have Done? Month, we're joined by the man who literally wrote the soon-to-be-released book on that era, Meet the Robinsons director Stephen Anderson! And for our topic, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1977, the summer when Star Wars had the unmitigated audacity to dominate the box office 35 years before Disney owned it. The only competition Disney had that summer was a Herbie sequel and an animated talking mice movie, so the Disney execs thought "Hey, y'know what Walt would've done? He would've paired the animated talking mice movie with a 48 minutes of documentary-style footage of a bear and a raccoon in the woods just kinda wandering around, narrated by an obscure country singer who, for thoroughly unclear reasons, is named 'Mayf Nutter.' That'll steer audiences away from Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star for sure!" Are you starting to understand why Disney struggled in the 70s? Eric looks back at one of the origins of his Disney obsession. DTV was Disney Channel's answer to MTV in the 1980s. Each episode of the series featured Disney animation clips choreographed to popular music of the time. Eric explores the impact MTV had on Disney's decision to make this series. He takes a look at the legacy of DTV in Disney History, and exposes some parallels between Walt Disney Productions in the early 1980s and the Walt Disney Company today. Eric also talks, probably too much about the Eurythmics! I had fine artist and Illustrator Keith Batcheller on the podcast today. He went to ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, got his BFA, and worked with all these interesting folks afterward, including Bob Peak, Mark English, and Bernie Fuchs. When Keith became a professional illustrator he worked with big firms in New York, Chicago, and L.A.  He eventually started working for Walt Disney Productions and did artwork for massive animated films like Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and my personal favorite - Lilo & Stitch.Disney still uses Keith's illustrations to this day for all sorts of different reasons, whether it's for a Hercules toy or a Star Wars celebration event. It's just a fascinating ride. Keith also worked on the promotional art and packaging for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures that took the country by storm in the late 80s/early 90s. Fast forward to today, and he's moved on from his highly successful illustration career (like many of the artists that I've interviewed have) and is focusing on fine art. We talk about the switch from illustration to fine art and explore the concept of beginning your journey on one very specific path, only to arrive at a completely different destination after decades of hard work and dedication to said path. I think the only way you can do that as an artist is that you have to be able to pivot. Keith? Yeah, he's done that quite successfully if you ask me.  Keith Batcheller on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 242.

"Song of the South" is a 1946 American film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by RKO Radio Pictures. The film is based on the Uncle Remus stories written by Joel Chandler Harris. The film features a combination of live-action and animation, and tells the story of a young boy named Johnny who visits his grandmother's plantation in the South and befriends a kindly old black man named Uncle Remus, who tells him a series of stories about the adventures of Brer Rabbit and other characters. The film was a commercial success and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song for the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah". However, the film has been criticized for its depiction of African Americans and the use of racial stereotypes, and has not been widely released or shown on television since the 1980s due to concerns about its portrayal of black people. "Song of the South" is considered an important film in the history of American cinema for several reasons. Firstly, it was one of the first films to feature a live-action and animated elements, which was considered a new and innovative technique at the time. This blend of animation and live-action set the stage for many of the Disney films that followed, and helped establish Disney as a leader in the animation industry. Secondly, it was one of the first major Hollywood films to feature a primarily African American cast, which was significant as Hollywood at the time was very white-dominated. However, as mentioned before it has been criticized for its depiction of African Americans and the use of racial stereotypes. Lastly, the film's Academy Award-nominated song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" became a hit and is considered a classic song of the Disney canon. Despite its historical significance, the film's portrayal of African Americans and the use of racial stereotypes has led to it being largely unseen in recent years and not widely available for viewing.

We also discuss the "story market."Here some background on Ken.In 1976, Atchity founded L/A House, Inc., a consulting, translation, book, television, and film development and production company whose clients included the Getty Museum and the US Postal Service. L/A House began by extending Atchity's teaching of creative writing to manuscript consultation and soon moved on to publishing with the production of Follies, a magazine covering creativity, and CQ: Contemporary Quarterly; Poetry and Art of which he was editor. In the 1980s L/A House moved into television, with a syndicated television pilot of BreakThrough! of which Atchity was executive producer and co-writer.In 1985, L/A House began development of a set of video/TV romance film projects entitled Shades of Love, which became 16 full-length films, produced in 1986–87 with Atchity as executive producer, that aired throughout the world, distributed by Lorimar, Astral-Bellevue-Pathe, Manson International, and Warner Brothers International, nominated for Canada's Gemini Award; in the U.S. they premiered on Cinemax-HBO.In 1989 he sold L/A House and founded AEI (Atchity Editorial/Entertainment International), a literary management and motion picture production company. Atchity sold Steve Alten's Meg to Bantam-Doubleday at auction in a $2.2M deal; and then to Disney, partnered with Zide-Perry, for $1.2 (later, to Newline Pictures for a similar price). Incorporated in 1996, its name was changed to Atchity Entertainment International, Inc. in 2005.In 2006, he and manager-partner Fred Griffin of Houston's Griffin Partners along with a group of investors from Louisiana and Texas, acquired The Louisiana Wave Studio, LLC in Shreveport, Louisiana from Walt Disney Productions. The LWS is the only tank specifically designed to make waves for motion pictures in North America. Films produced at the LWS include The Guardian, Mayday—Bering Sea, Shark Night 3D, Streets of Blood, and I Love You, Philip Morris; along with numerous government and industrial films. In 2011 Atchity was nominated for an Emmy for producing The Kennedy Detail (Discovery) based on their clients' Jerry Blaine and Lisa McCubbin's New York Times bestselling book by the same title published by Gallery/Simon & Schuster in 2010. AEI's films include Joe Somebody (Tim Allen, Julie Bowen), Life Or Something Like It (Angelina Jolie, Edward Burns), and The MEG (Jason Statham). In 2010, Atchity also founded Atchity Productions and Story Merchant.Enjoy my conversation with Ken Atchity.
