fWotD Episode 2471: Dorothy L. Sayers Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 9 February 2024 is Dorothy L. Sayers.Dorothy Leigh Sayers (; 13 June 1893 – 17 December 1957) was an English crime novelist, playwright, translator and critic.Born in Oxford, Sayers was brought up in rural East Anglia and educated at Godolphin School in Salisbury and Somerville College, Oxford, graduating with first class honours in medieval French. She worked as an advertising copywriter between 1922 and 1929 before success as an author brought her financial independence. Her first novel Whose Body? was published in 1923. Between then and 1939 she wrote ten more novels featuring the upper-class amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. In 1930, in Strong Poison, she introduced a leading female character, Harriet Vane, the object of Wimsey's love. Harriet appears sporadically in future novels, resisting Lord Peter's proposals of marriage until Gaudy Night in 1935, six novels later.Sayers moved the genre of detective fiction away from pure puzzles lacking characterisation or depth, and became recognised as one of the four "Queens of Crime" of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction of the 1920s and 1930s, along with Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham and Ngaio Marsh. She was a founder member of the Detection Club, and worked with many of its members in producing novels and radio serials collaboratively, such as the novel The Floating Admiral in 1931.From the mid‐1930s Sayers wrote plays, mostly on religious themes; they were performed in English cathedrals and broadcast by the BBC. Her radio dramatisation of the life of Christ, The Man Born to Be King (1941–42), initially provoked controversy but was quickly recognised as an important work. From the early 1940s her main preoccupation was translating the three books of Dante's Divine Comedy into colloquial English. She died unexpectedly at her home in Essex, aged 64, before completing the third book. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:03 UTC on Friday, 9 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dorothy L. Dorothy Sayers was a pioneer in the world of detective fiction, and in her second novel featuring Lord Peter Wimsey, she deepens her craft. In his first outing in Whose Body, Wimsey verges on caricature, and in Clouds of Witness, he's drawn as more of a man of action. Sayers will deepen this aspect of Wimsey in subsequent novels. The title for this book comes from the Bible: Hebrews Chapter 12, verse 1: "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." Coming in 15th place for our 2022 recommendations is Dorothy L. Sayers with ‘Whose Body?'. One of the Golden Age of Murder Mystery's four ‘Queens of Crime', alongside Christie, Marsh & Allingham, it would be difficult to overstate the significance of Sayers' contribution to the genre, as founding member and third president of The Detection Club, as well as a trailblazer in arts academia for women. Unfortunately, it would also be difficult to understate our enthusiasm for ‘Whose Body?'. There is a certain genius to its construction, a sharply poetic mind evident in its odd stylistic non-sequiturs and unusual if eloquent dialogue, but whilst that makes it fascinating to discuss, it doesn't make it the easiest read to recommend.
Isabella of Whose Body Is It? Joins us for a great chat about her journey from left liberal to pushing back hard against this engineered culture war/system. The War on women, the business of being born, the business of transitioning, ultra sexing, synthetic hormones, birthing centres, women's festivals, the split as usual during covid, and puberty blockers are some of the things we get into in the first half. We also touch on the pronoun issue, the trans lobby, true trans cant be measured, radical feminism vs radical feminism analysis, and the trans billionaires at the top, the UN, unpacking planned parenthood, and the evidence of engineering. In the second half we dig deeper into the hospital vs home births, the C section push, more issues with the birthing system - everything we are told about it is a lie, in the “opposite” world, the false illusion of inclusion, baby jabs, flu jabs, how she saw the jab jab coming, the identity medicine complex, masking kids, matriarchal groups worshipping nature and goddess, men supporting their bloodline only, big Pharma peaking from gender medicine, where this is going, how bad it's gotten and her upcoming master class. (See link below). We also touch on how this started in the 90's and how to deal with this CRT and marxism agenda, ready to be fired? Agenda 2030, prenatal grooming, critique of porn and surrogacy, masking kids, and some solutions like start building committee, hit back at the local level. Say no. Welcome to Love & Life's occasional series—Empowered Evolving. We talk about empowered living all the time on Love & Life. We look to psych research and techniques from psychotherapy to help us, as former Love & Life guest, Dr. Steven C. Hayes founder of ACT puts it, “take committed action in the service of our chosen values.” We live empowered by living out our values—clarifying what they are and then taking committed action toward them. Sometimes, as we clarify our values, we realize we're moving away from where we've been. We're stepping into uncharted territory. We're leaving comfort and certainty behind. But, if we're committed to maintaining an open mind and considering various viewpoints, it's not surprising that sometimes, we change our mind. We're evolving. Empowered evolving entails honesty and commitment—a commitment to our principles. And, it takes courage; it takes a lot of courage to speak out when your community expects you to adhere to its belief system. Isabell Malbin knows about evolving. Her evolution began when as a doula, Isabella witnessed abusive practices in hospital delivery rooms. She moved into hypnobirthing and rejected euphemisms such as “belly births.” Eventually, her mentor asked her if she wanted to be a reformist or a radical. She chose the latter. Today Isabella hosts the Whose Body is It? podcast on which she raises consciousness around how women are harmed by transgender ideology, porn, and prostitution. She coaches women to help us wake up and speak out.
