Everyone loves to be called a Son of God. Being a son, an heir and a custodian of holy oracles is weighty stuff … The grandeur, the prestige may be great, but also, the excruciating pressure and tender delicacy required to steward Abba's estate. Heaven is peering at us, rooting for us. Urging that we do not fail. That we carry this heavy mandate as heirs of God's eternal privilege.

Today's conversation is one that I have been eager to have with you guys – it's literally been sitting in my brain for almost a year now and started after I heard from someone who expressed a desire to follow God but had acquired so much through stuff through her sinful past (exchanging sex for money). It was really hard for her to let go because she did not want to suffer. My friend, El Shakar has actually experienced this and gone through something similar and that's why I was eager to have this conversation with him and bring you guys along.
In her first broadcast interview, Louise Townsend, the mother of Olivia Perks who took her own life in 2019 whilst at Sandhurst Military Academy, speaks to Woman's Hour. Louise discusses her view that there was a lack of welfare support from the academy towards her late daughter and what steps need to be taken to ensure it doesn't happen again. Today is a big day coming up with the Women's Ashes series where England face Australia. The Aussies have surged ahead in the women's multi-format series, but there is hope for England as the momentum behind them builds - thanks, in part, to record breaking crowds. Sports journalist and broadcaster Georgie Heath joins Nuala to discuss. Shakardokht Jafari was born in rural Afghanistan in 1977 and became a refugee when she was 6 and grew up in Iran. After the fall of the Taliban, she moved back to Afghanistan first securing a teaching post in radiology at Kabul Medical University, then being asked to re-establish a cancer facility in Kabul. To secure the post, she needed to gain more qualifications, and in 2010 she came to the UK where she became the first Afghan woman to earn a PhD in medical physics. Shakar has gone on to win a string of awards for business innovation and has also found time to write her life story, Shakar: An Afghan Woman's Journey and to be a leading campaigner for girls' education in Afghanistan. Can distress be used as evidence in rape trials? This is the discussion currently going through the courts in Scotland. Nuala is joined by Sandy Brindley, Chief Exec of Rape Crisis Scotland and Serious Crime Barrister Thomas Leonard Ross KC to debate the issue. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce

«Han smilte. Fornøyd, men overraska.

This week I get to talk to one of my favorite fiction authors, Alex Shakar, about the profound darkbright bizarritude he channels through his two visionary satirical novels The Savage Girl and Luminarium — two works that show the möbius strip of sacred and profane, futurity and timelessness. We bounce off a long list of paradoxical domains, including saving the world with consumerism, metamodernism, ironic religion, virtuality, neurotheology, trauma and radical meaninglessness, the military entertainment complex, hikikomori, and zen comedy…Alex Shakar’s Website.Support this show on Patreon for secret episodes, the Future Fossils book club, and more awesome stuff than you probably have time for.Grab the books we talk about (and others Alex recommends) and Amazon will chip me a little of the proceeds, at no cost to you.Theme Music: “God Detector” by Evan “Skytree” Snyder (feat. Hvordan oppleves hverdagen for ungdommer i Groruddalen?
HURRA FOR JANTELOVEN!

Host and curator Amanda Stern concluded this season’s Happy Ending Music & Reading series at Joe’s Pub on July 11 with an evening themed around “communication.” Stern’s themes are almost always designed to resonate ironically and this program was no exception, as the authors Rajesh Parameswaran, Alex Shakar and Nell Freudenberger delivered variations on the idea of wanting what you can’t have, and don't know how to ask for. Parameswaran read from his collection “I am an Executioner” — a story in which a captive tiger falls in love with his zookeeper and things do not go well. Shakar offered an excerpt from his novel “Luminarium.” His protagonist Fred is beset by a Job-like pile of woes, and spends an afternoon with a Hollywood wannabe who claims to have achieved enlightenment. Nell Freudenberger’s novel “The Newlyweds” features a 21st-century version of the mail-order bride; in the excerpt heard here, she finds her arranged (by her) wedding more light-hearted than she anticipated. Musical guest Ana Egge helped set the mood with a set of dark rock/folk songs about — well, wanting what you can’t have. This show was the last at Joe’s Pub. The series will continue in the autumn. For further information check Stern’s website at http://amandastern.com/happy-ending/ To hear excerpts from the readings, and Egge’s performance, click on the player above. Bons Mots A tiger in love. “Where was my hunger? Where was all the gloom and trouble of the day? It was all gone. Kitch was here.” -- Rajesh Parameswaran, “The Infamous Bengal Ming.” Unlikely prophet at a Universal theme park. “’So I heard you attained Nirvana or something,’ Fred mumbled…’what’s that mean?’…’beyond the slum of human reality. It means free, Freddie, just free.’”—Alex Shakar, “Luminarium.” Wanting it the way she wants it. “In ‘Desh you make your plans and they usually do not succeed. But in America you make your plans and then they happen.”— Nell Freudenberger, “The Newlyweds.”
