We continue the GangStarr Foundation Month talking about one of the most incredible albums of 1994: Jeru the Damaja's "The Run Rises in the East" with first time guest Rob Cave (fka Spec Boogie) of Lessondary Crew! We discuss the unorthodox beats from Premier that differed from his work with Guru, the unmistakable flows from Jeru, the unforgettable videos, and then unhinged rants on foods with gooey centers, the improbable success of Logic, and all of the revisions The Source made over the years to their 5 Mic ratings! You can find Rob's music here:https://robcavejr.bandcamp.com/musicIf you want exclusive content or wish to see the video of this episode you can become a Patreon member using the link below: https://www.patreon.com/calloutculturepodcastYou can find our music here:Zilla Rocca:https://5oclockshadowboxers.bandcamp.com/musicCurly Castro:https://curlycastro.bandcamp.com/album/little-robert-huttonhttps://shrapknel.bandcamp.com/Alaska:https://thatrapperalaska.bandcamp.com/

Zmo has been getting on me about this for months. So I decided to set it off with my brother from the same mother Dj Disc Dolo. We go over the impact as well as the historical context of Jeru Da Damaja's debut album, “The Sun Rises in the East.” We discuss the production, lyrics, and the impact Jeru had on the Boom Bap sound. This album is a classic but is underrated. That is not a hot take. It should be discussed alongside classics such as “Illmatic”and “Southernplayalisticadillakmusic.” Free Palestine and we express solidarity to them and other oppressed peoples around the world. B. Cox reviews Gang Starr's classic fourth album Hard To Earn as it turns 30. After the critical success of 1992's Daily Operation, Guru and DJ Premier took a brief hiatus to pursue individual projects. Guru launched his Jazzmatazz series and Premier became one of the most sought after producers in industry, working with the likes Jeru the Damaja, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and KRS-One. Coming back to record their fourth, the group wanted to prove that they were versatile and wanted to show that they could stray from their jazz-sampled sensibilities on their previous album and could rock with a different sound.Heavily involved with the project was the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective that was aligned with the duo that included the likes of Jeru, the hip-hop duo Group Home, Big Shug, Freddie Foxx (Bumpy Knuckles), Afu-Ra among others. The project featured Jeru, both Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker and Big Shug. Unlike Daily Operation, the album was produced under a wider variety of musical influences. The album featured two classic singles: "DWYCK" with hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth (which was supposed to be originally on Daily Operation and "Mass Appeal". The album was critically acclaimed upon release and reestablished Gang Starr as a force within hip-hop. It also served as a forerunner to a number of different albums over the next 18 months that were credited as being pivotal to the New York hip-hop scene being a power center once again in the hip-hop landscape. We are thoroughly back into our regular episodes after a bumpy, special-riddled journey of recent times. And this one is about Erasure's sixth album 'I Say I Say I Say' from May of 1994. We have already done an Erasure album back in Season 2 and we thought that that record was just ok, maybe this one will be more up our street? Along the way we also chat about Jeru the Damaja, Pearl Jam and, erm, Toad The Wet Sprocket so enjoy those diversions. And as always check out the companion playlist for this episode with all of the songs we talk about included on it and please feel free to get in contact if you fancy - you can do so via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. And you can catch up with our ongoing playlist made up of songs from all of the albums we've covered so far right here.

On this episode of the DOD45 show, episode 40, @ArtByTai & Adrienne have a chat with Dope Knife, while Tai sketches him a skull-inspired drawing. They discuss Mack's newest album The Dope One, released on @fakefourinc , and his family's journey from Liberia in the 90's fleeing the Civil War and ending up in Savannah, GA. They also discuss the origins of the moniker Dope Knife & how it reflects his grimey side, and Mack comments on Jeru the Damaja's influence on hip-hop. He also shares his appreciation for Ice-T and the discussion eventually imagines a scenario with a Dope Knife/Ice-T collaboration. B. Cox reviews hip-hop duo Gang Starr's third album Daily Operation. After their critical and commercial breakthrough with their sophomore album Step In The Arena the year before, Guru and DJ Premier sought out to capitalize on their notoriety and recognition within hip-hop circles while staying true to the underground. Featuring appearances by the likes of Jeru the Damaja and Lil' Dap (soon of Group Home fame), the album was driven by a more lyrically confident, yet introspective, confident Guru and the jazzy yet hard hitting production of an improving DJ Premier. Though the album did not attain the commercial success of a RIAA certification, it has been hailed by critics and fans alike as another album pioneering both jazz infused hip-hop and a leading influence on the New York and East Coast underground scene in the early 1990s.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comLearn More About the "Podcast GPS" BootCamp Course!www.vaultclassicpod.com/podcastgpsSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: Gang Starr's "Daily Operation Turns 25" | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-25-years-of-gang-starr-daily-operationRock The Bells: Classic Albums: Daily Operation by Gang Starrhttps://rockthebells.com/articles/gang-starr-daily-operation/The Boom Box: 25 Years Later: Gang Starr's "Daily Operation Forged A Path For Hardcore Individualityhttps://theboombox.com/25-years-later-gang-starrs-daily-operation-forged-a-path-for-hardcore-individuality/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Not many have the Mental and Physical stamina to keep up with Jeru the Damaja. The BWBC crew goes deep into why 'Wrath of the Math' was so important for its time, and how just a few years later, Jeru's warning about the hip hop industry came true. They discuss Jeru's rugged Brooklyn style and how DJ Premier sets the mood for every artist he works with.
Blowout Comb is the second studio album by American hip hop group Digable Planets, released October 18, 1994, on Pendulum/EMI Records. The album was written and recorded in Brooklyn, New York, where the group moved, with recording sessions beginning in 1993 and finishing in 1994. On Blowout Comb, Digable Planets abandoned the radio friendly style of their debut album and worked with a more ambitious, stripped-down sound. The album features a diverse range of samples and live instruments, and contains lyrical themes of the inner city and black nationalism.[1] It also features guest appearances from Guru of Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, and DJ Jazzy Joyce.Upon its release, Blowout Comb received minimal label support, and virtually no pre-release publicity.[2] It peaked at number 32 on the Billboard 200, and number 13 on the Top R&B Albums, making it a commercial failure. It featured the singles "9th wonder" and "Dial 7", which also did not chart well, and failed to match the success of the group's previous singles. Several music writers have attributed this lack of chart and sales success to the album's afrocentric content, and un-polished tone. Shortly after the release of Blowout Comb, Digable Planets broke up due to creative differences and displeasure with the music industry.Although the album did not achieve commercial success, and received very little attention at the time of its release, Blowout Comb received generally greater acclaim amongst music critics and writers than the group's debut Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space). It has been noted for its seamless production and has been described as a "textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz and urban ambiance."[3] Blowout Comb is often regarded as Digable Planets' best album, and has gained an underground following in later years.[4] In 2013, it was reissued on vinyl LP by Light in the Attic Records.
The Sun Rises in the East is the debut album by American hip hop rapper Jeru the Damaja, released May 24, 1994 on Payday Records. Production on the album was handled by DJ Premier. The album features fellow Gang Starr Foundation member Afu-Ra. The album cover depicts the World Trade Center on fire only one year after the 1993 bombing of the North Tower. The Sun Rises in the East was well received by most music critics upon its release. It is considerably significant in hip hop, as it contributed to the revival of the East Coast hip hop scene, along with albums such as Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993), Nas's Illmatic (1994) and Black Moon's Enta da Stage (1993). The album has been considered by critics to be Jeru the Damaja's best work.

New heat follows from Your Old Droog & Tha God Fahim, Borvoe McMidnite, Saga & Tone Spliff, Selema Writes, Breezly Brewin, Da Cloth, Jah-Monte, The Bad Seed & John Robinson, A-Sharp, and MelloSoulBlack! We head back to 2021 for exclusives from Passport Rav, AJ Suede, Madman, The Musalini, Craig G, Teflon, Conway & Tek, Vic Monroe, and OC from NC! Do not miss the season premiere!

With great thanks to Vikki Tobak and the Contact High Project, we welcome three photographers to our studio who are responsible for some of the most iconic images from the history of hip-hop. Janette Beckman, Eric Johnson, and Danny Hastings join us to tell the stories behind their photos of RUN-DMC, Wu Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, and many others. We also speak about issues important to photographers, from on-set technique, to artistic collaboration and influence, to gear, to networking and, of course, licensing of images. For us, this was a highly anticipated recording and it did not disappoint. Whether you are a hip-hop fan interested in behind-the-scenes stories or a photographer looking for insight, join us for this incredible conversation. Janette Beckman began her career at the dawn of punk rock in the U.K., photographing The Clash, Sex Pistols, and Boy George, as well as three Police album covers. Moving to New York in 1982, she was drawn to the underground hip-hop scene and photographed pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt’n’Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, and Big Daddy Kane. She has published four books and currently has an exhibition of silkscreen prints at 212 Arts in New York. Eric Johnson has created iconic hip-hop images of Notorious B.I.G, Lauryn Hill, Dipset, Li’l Wayne, and newer artists like G Herbo and Cakes da Killa. His work stretches across music genres to include Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, and Maxwell and, for the past decade, he has helmed Upstairs at Eric’s, a loft space in Manhattan that is equal parts studio, gallery, disco, lounge, and design studio. Danny Hastings has shot 150 album covers and directed more than 40 music videos. Listed in Complex Magazine as one of the rap photographers every rap fan should know, his most notable album covers include Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Big Pun’s Capital Punishment, Nas’s IA, as well as album art for Raekwon, Eminem, and Jeru the Damaja. Hastings is now directing his second feature film. Vikki Tobak is a journalist, correspondent, and former CNN producer who currently writes and produces for Complex, Mass Appeal, and The FADER. She is the author of Contact High: Hip-Hop Photography + Visual Culture, an upcoming book from Penguin/Random House. Guests: Janette Beckman, Eric Johnson, Danny Hastings, Vikki Tobak

(montage feat. Jeru the Damaja)

Episode 011 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes JEFF FRANCA, drummer of Thievery Corporation and founder of Congo Sanchez and Natural Selectah, to the show for an informative and emotional powwow. Jeff is a rising star in the Denver music scene, and traces his musical and personal roots back to the District of Columbia. We took a solid ninety minutes to chop it up about a number of salient topics that ran the gamut and it was a thoroughly enjoyable conversation that I think will resonate with the Upful LIFE listeners. We begin by discussing the Washington D.C. music scene and the successful, trendsetting new venue there The Anthem, spiralling out into a few directions from there. His earliest memories of Pink Floyd hitting his ears, and the music that first reached him deep inside. Topics covered include his roots as a thorough study of iconic jazz drummers from the late 50's through the early 70's, such as Billy Higgins, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cobham, and Max Roach. He touches on themes and concepts native to each of their styles, and how those cats changed, and basically shaped, the game for decades to come. We also touch on his time at the University of Indiana as a double major, whether or not he wanted to try out for The Disco Biscuits, and his thoughts on jazz jamming verses jamband jamming. Jeff then takes a deep dive on a topic that will resonate with anybody who listens in, the relationship he had with his late brother Nicholas, who died in 2011, after a lengthy illness. Jeff details how his music career intersected with the last months of his brother's life, the cosmic Virgo/Sagittarius connections within it all, how his brother empowered him to forge onward as a musician and an artist. He recalls in emotional detail spending days at Sloan Kettering in NYC with Nicholas and then chasing John Zorn, Adam Deitch, hanging at The Stone, and the experiencing the downtown scene after dark. It was during this time that the seeds were being sewn for Jeff to begin playing with Thievery Corporation. Jeff's late brother Nicholas Franca Jeff brings us all the way back to Eighteenth Street Lounge music in D.C. and how stints producing records with Funk Ark and touring with See-I laid the foundation for his role as Thievery Corporation's touring drummer. Franca explains the roots of Thievery in D.C. culture, and around the world, and how that heritage has taken shape over two decades. Jeff continues by meticulously breaking down his role playing live drums in an electronic music outfit, and it's fascinating to hear him unspool it all, the nuts and bolts of how Rob Garza, Eric Hilton and company have evolved their live sets into a true live band performance, without sacrificing any of the thump. We get a thorough introduction to Congo Sanchez, Jeff's fantastic side-project that mixes it up in mysterious styles of world electro and future dancehall. He recalls some humorous road stories and a comical debut at Electric Forest 2012, before opening up a bit about the cultural and thematic concepts inherent in the Congo Sanchez trio. All that plus his presence on Eddie Roberts' Color Red label in Denver, and why the music scene there is different then anywhere else in the States today. Having a partner as a tour manager, why the grind of touring is an authentic and essential element to making honest art. And a tribute to true East Coast OG, the late great Ryan Dewitt. Thievery Corporation on the road in 2015 We follow that up with another interview from the Emerald Cup cannabis event in Northern California, in early December. This time we chat it up with Moe Angelo and Pat Anglin of the immersive art installation Because of the Lotus, which is a festival favorite and a beloved part of the fabric of Spirit of Suwannee Music Park, which coincidentally just announced another fantastic event Suwannee Rising, April 4-6. The *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* is a classic golden-era hip-hop jam from twenty-three years ago: Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers: Crooklyn Dodgers 95 featuring Chubb Rock, Masta Ace, and Jeru the Damaja, with DJ Premier production. Show: Heat Rocks Guests: Adrian Younge The Album: Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises In the East (1994) Since he started putting numbers on the board with the soundtrack to Black Dynamite, artist/composer Adrian Younge has become the hip-hop maestro for creative collaborations. Through the years, he's worked with Souls of Mischief, Ghostface Killah and DJ Premier/Royce the 5'9" as well as continuing to release his own solo work. For our episode, Younge reached back to the golden era of hip-hop for us to talk about one of the most "impervious" MCs around: Brooklyn's Jeru the Damaja and his 1994 debut album, The Sun Rises in the East. We tackled everything from the contradictions of rappers talking about both consciousness and doing dirt to the brilliance of DJ Premier's production to the intricacies of Jeru's freaky freaky freaky flow. Yugen Blakrok is an emcee hailing from South Africa. She has opened for legends like MC Lyte, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Edo G. She has also performed alongside legends like Public Enemy and Jeru the Damaja. Most recently she has collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the Black Panther soundtrack. That was the opening track you just heard. We will be talking about her beat knocking and lyrically heavy album titled, “Return of the Astro-Goth”
Guest O.C D.I.T,C Member - Omar Credle (born May 13, 1971), better known by his stage name, O.C., is an American rapper and member of the group D.I.T.C., who has been involved with several renowned underground hip hop groups: Crooklyn Dodgers '95, Luv NY, Perestroika. Recording career.Omar was born in Brooklyn, May 13, 1971,[1] and raised in the Bushwick section. O.C. cites legends like Kool G. Rap, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and Slick Rick as his main influences.[2] In 1991, he made his recording debut on Organized Konfusion's "Fudge Pudge",.[1] One year later he made an appearance on the remix of MC Serch's "Back to the Grill" (which also features a very young Nas) after meeting Serch on the inaugural Source tour. Following the tour, O.C. signed with Wild Pitch Records in 1994 where Serch was vice president.[2] O.C. also met Lord Finesse and Buckwild on the first Source tour, marking his introduction to the D.I.T.C crew. After the tour he connected with Buckwild and started recording a demo that would become his debut album Word...Life.[2]By 1994, he finished the album Word...Life, which included everything from his demo, along with "Time's Up," the song that would go on to be his most notable single. "Time's up" was initially a record for Pharoahe Monch from Organized Konfusion.[2] Beyond a quick outro from Prince Po, Word...Life does not have any guest appearances. This was not by design, however, as Nas was supposed to be on the album but never showed up to the studio for the recording session.[2] The album was critically acclaimed and remains beloved in hip-hop circles. In 1996, Credle appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, America is Dying Slowly, alongside Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other prominent hip hop artists. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as "a masterpiece" by The Source magazine. In 1997, O.C. signed to Pay Day Records,[1] where he released his second album Jewelz, featuring collaborations with DJ Premier, Da Beatminerz and Freddie Foxxx. The single "Far From Yours" peaked at #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it his highest charting single to date. By this time, he was a part of the underground hip hop act known as Diggin' in The Crates together with Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, Showbiz & A.G., Diamond D, Buckwild and Big L. In 2000 the crew released their self-titled debut album through Tommy Boy Records on which O.C. featured on the majority of the songs. In 1998, O.C. was featured on Pete Rock's "Respect Mine" from Pete Rock's 1998 solo debut album Soul Survivor. The 2001 release of Bon Appetit was met with very mixed reviews; the negative accused O.C. of selling out with a polished, shining and toned-down sound. This was although Buckwild produced the large bulk of the album with the only help coming from Lord Finesse and Ahmed (pretty much the same formula that made Word...Lifea success). After the disappointing release O.C. disappeared from the scene until 2005, when he released his fourth album with Grit Records; Starchild which only dropped as a very limited Japanese/European import and was met with great acclaim. Later that year, he signed with Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings and teamed up with Bronx-native producer Mike Loe, and dropped Smoke and Mirrors.O.C. is also known for his feature on the Clockers soundtrack as part of the Crooklyn Dodgers, which also featured rappers Chubb Rock and Jeru the Damaja on the now classic DJ Premier produced "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers". This is however the only time the group has ever collaborated.O.C. collaborated with fellow D.I.T.C. member A.G. for an album entitled Oasis. The bulk of the album was produced by French beatsmith E-Blaze with additional tracks supplied by Lord Finesse, Statik Selektah and Showbiz who also acts as the executive producer of the album. May 2012 saw the release of a new collaborative album with Detroit-based producer Apollo Brown entitled Trophies on the Mello Music Group label. The first single was "Prove Me Wrong". The vinyl version of that album has also been repressed several times over. With Ray West in 2014 O.C. has curated a more laid back and purposefully smooth affair. Besides flowing freely from track-to-track with the help of atmospheric interludes, Ray's Cafe is noticeably and gratifyingly short at nine tracks long as well. Ray's Cafe was released on Red Apples 45, a small label co-founded by A.G. and West. O.C. joined D.I.T.C. for their 2016 release Sessions which was preceded by the lead single "Rock Shyt" See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Antony of Egypt, once known as Kalki, and now also known as Kikwaakew, Inked Eyes & Professor X (of Mutant Akademy), was born in Toronto on the 18th of September 1982. As a child Antony always had a way with words, and after performing his first live hip-hop show in 1992 (A cover of "Jump Around" by House of Pain) and entering the graffiti scene the same year in Quebec city, this finally blossomed into a musical career in 1994 when he started rapping both in English and French, influenced by various genres & artists from both polar opposites like KRS-ONE, Jeru the Damaja, IAM, Fonky Family, Tupac, Nas, CNN, Mobb Deep, Rage Against the Machine, Downset, Bad Religion, No Use For a Name & many others. He was soon praised among his peers in Quebec City for his unique brand of gritty yet socially conscious raps. However, as a teenager he ran into a lot of the stereotypical problems that people have come to expect from rappers due to some negative influences, and strayed from the path he had first begun to tread. Around 1999 however, he discovered the Gravediggaz album "The Pick, the Sickle & the Shovel" which put everything back into perspective for him and deeply affected his art. He also started making music with his close friend Ali Dahesh, and together they recorded over 50 tracks which were published nearly a decade later as Antony of Egypt's first official album, "In the Beginning", originally titled "Conscious Revolution". The word anniversary once referred to the commemorative feast in honor of a Catholic saint. Today we use the term for a celebration of any past event that took place the year or years prior on the same date. This year in particular marks the 20th Anniversary of a hip-hop record distinguished by its raw sound, uncompromising lyricism, and social commentary: Jeru the Damaja's debut album, The Sun Rises In The East. 1994 was a powerful, transformative year for hip-hop. Nas, OutKast, and Biggie Smalls each dropped their debut albums, while other more established artists released projects regarded both then and now as milestones in the genre. Jeru was only 21 years old when he recorded the The Sun Rises; 22 when it came out on Payday Records. And the album was well received in the hip-hop community. What you're about to hear is Jeru the Damaja taking us track by track through his DJ Premier-produced debut album, delving into an array of subjects and stories such as: - Waiting and watching for Nas to create Illmatic. - Spending formative years with the members of the Wu-Tang Clan. - The nature of Brooklyn pride. - His inspiration drawn from his family, friends, and predecessors. - And the story of how he got his pet hamster. This is "You Must Learn." "You Must Learn" was produced and edited by Peter Oasis, written by Dharmic X, and executive produced by Evan Auerbach (of @UpNorthTrips), with narration from Soul Khan. The intro was produced by DJ Flipout, and the artwork was designed by Kelly Green. Special thanks to Sarah Honda for the love. "You Must Learn" was recorded in your mother's basement next to your favorite blogger somewhere in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Please subscribe to "You Must Learn" on iTunes, Stitcher, and wherever great podcasts can be found.
WARNING - EXPLICIT MATERIAL!!!! - In this for ADULTS ONLY edition of the web’s best Hip-Hop podcast, the Boom Bap Radio Crew of J-Crush, Angry Engineer, C.O., and Masta Talka struck a defiant tone against oppression by going all uncensored. Foul-mouthed and raw, Hip-Hop’s Fab Four railed against oppressive weather, aging racist rockers, chicken feet roasting on an open fire and another lackluster ruling out of Florida. So have you heard the one about a man shoots 10 rounds into a car of unarmed men kills one and only gets charged for the one’s he missed? Yeah, us too – friggin’ Florida. However, it is through Hip-Hop that we best voice our outrage. Jeru the Damaja; Ghostface Killah, Wu-Tang Clan, Big Pun, Nappy Roots, Eightball and Biggie help us vent our displeasure. Yo! Step away from the chicken foot! I repeat: Step away from the chicken foot – It’s Boom Bap Radio.

JERU THE DAMAJA (nyc) + HASTYLE (nyc) Les artistes : JERU THE DAMAJA (nyc) 1ère partie : HASTYLE (nyc) / DJ STAMIFF (Lille) / OMAZ (Paris) / DJ AMOR (Lille) JERU THE DAMAJA : Jeru a débuté sa carrière en 1992 sur « I'm the Man », un morceau présent sur l'album de Gang Starr Daily Operation.
