As an endurance athlete himself, Brandon Engle understands the importance of listening to your body and seeking professional help when the normal pain of running increases. He shares some great tips for preventing injuries - stretching, strength training, cross training, foot strike/proper stride, and importance of correct foot wear for both running and the rest of the day.Engle stresses that while having a good training plan is great, listening to your body and getting ahead of potential injuries is better. Having a coach that can adjust the training plan based on both short term goals and long term goals is critical to avoiding injuries that create long-term breaks in training.Brandon Engle is the Clinical Director for ATI Physical Therapy (www.atipt.com). Has your physical therapist or chiropractor used a stainless steel tool to work on your persistent knots? If so, you've experienced Graston therapy. The Graston Technique is a type of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IATSM), which research has shown to be effective in improving range of motion and reducing pain. Personally, I've never been a big fan of hard tools, especially if they cause bruising, but this is where things can get confusing. In many Eastern medicine techniques (gua sha, cupping, etc.), bruising is the goal and is seen as a sign of healing. So is Graston just a watered-down, Westernized version of an ancient practice? Does it actually work? In this week's episode, we dive into all things Graston and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. You'll learn: Using tools for bodywork aka instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization The history of the Graston Technique and how it works How hard tools can be used safely and effectively to reduce pain and improve range of motion… without bruising All the links: The efficacy of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization: a systematic review. Graston - involves using curved metal tools to apply pressure and friction across the injured muscle, fascia, or tendon. Graston Technique works by stretching the outer layer of the "onion" and breaking it into several pieces. The Graston instruments use shear force to pull the top fascial layer across the bottom fascial layer. This pulling motion breaks up the scar tissue between the layers. The broken scar tissue triggers healing mechanisms to migrate into the tissue and properly repair the muscles and soft tissues. Now this may seem very tortuous but it is extremely effective at breaking down the tissue. Want to grab the complete guide?Click here

Chiropractic care: when you hear that, where does your mind go? Believe it or not, among the healthcare professions, the practice of a chiropractor is the most misunderstood niche there is! Unfortunately, myths, misconceptions, and false beliefs label this field of medicine that is one of the most essential to creating and maintaining health and longevity in your daily life. SO, who better to sort through these misunderstandings and set the record straight than someone I have known for years to be an expert in the field of chiropractic- so much so, that I put my own care, literally in her hands! It is an honor to welcome to The Fit Pharmacist Healthcare podcast my good friend Dr. Ashley Bodenmiller, a Pittsburgh native who has been practicing at Choice Restorative Medicine since graduating Summa Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic Florida in 2012. She became a partner/owner in 2017. After extensive studies in Anatomy and Physiology at Palmer College and Ohio University, she realized the importance of a stable structure and wanted to help others. Her greatest success comes in helping those who's busy, active lives are being interfered with as a result of injury, repetitive trauma or chronic dysfunction. She enjoys treating people of all ages, and loves when her clients send their friends and family to her to help them achieve their optimal health potential. She is certified in Graston Technique, a soft tissue mobilization technique which uses instruments to detect areas in the soft tissue that are not functioning properly and help to restore them. This technique is ideal for any kind of tendonitis, chronic pain, muscle adhesions, etc. Dr. Ashley extensively educates companies, organizations and schools about health and wellness through her community service commitment. SHOW NOTES I met Dr. Snell in Colorado this year while he was presenting at the Rehab to Performance Symposium on the topic of back pain and clinical reasoning. Seems like a general enough topic for a chiropractor right? The funny thing is that many healthcare providers don’t have a systematic way to resolving back pain because they’ve never dug deep enough to uncover the main reason of the patient’s condition. Dr. Snell took us all through an amazing workflow of how to identify the root case of low back pain (based upon some McGill and McKinzie works) and then how to reduce the person’s pain quickly. He has a website called Fix Your Own Back that you should definitely check out. Dermal traction, formally known as YAP, is also one of his original ideas (along with Justin Dean, a past guest) and he goes over the concept of using it for high patient buy in today. SHOW NOTES: https://www.p2sportscare.com/fix-your-own-back-dermal-traction-dr-phillip-snell-dc/ Phillip Snell Bio: A cum laude graduate of Western States Chiropractic College (now University of Western States) in Portland, Phillip also received extensive post-graduate training in the diagnosis, treatment, and case management of automobile-related spine trauma. His practice is focused on sports medicine, using functional assessment and rehab prescription, and supported by cutting-edge myofascial techniques like Graston Technique and Stecco Fascial Manipulation. He also has served as part-time faculty at University of Western States in their manual therapy department and Sports Medicine Masters degree program. Phillip keeps up to date with emerging scientific literature to improve his clinical practice, a process known as evidence-based practice. He also travels extensively each year, teaching these methods to other doctors—and continuing to add to his own toolbox as he in turn learns from the best researchers and teachers in the world. Using a biomechanics mindset, Phillip enjoys the detective work that gets to the bottom of stubborn, painful conditions. He then turns his attention to teaching patients how to use corrective exercises to manage their own conditions. His focus on finding the key movement patterns that need correction led him to launch MyRehabExercise.com in 2011. Health care professionals around the world use the website to help teach their own patients functional rehab methods. As a long-time athlete, Phillip has a special appreciation of the needs of athletes as they age and the conditions that keep them from being as active as they would like. Patients can expect not only chiropractic adjustments, but also treatment to address the surrounding muscle and fascial tissues, followed up with thorough rehabilitation exercises. Treatments are tailored to each patient's needs, with special attention to educating the patient in how to reduce future injuries. Phillip enjoys wintertime snowboarding and during the warmer months can be found in his garden or hiking and running the beautiful trails in the Portland area with his wife and son. SHOW NOTES Warren Hammer authored some of the first articles and books I read as I was starting into grad school. He’s been practicing using various soft tissue methods since the 1960’s… he landed on Facial Manipulation as his main tool. I couldn’t help but reach out to him to see what he has learned over the past 50 years of soft tissue work, clinical experience and research. You’ll enjoy his passion! Here’s some topics we hit: What kind of injuries or cases can fascial work assist with? What is Fascia? Does fascia have pain receptors? Why does fascia get restrictions and what is the physical “sticking?” How is Fascial work any different than foam rolling, massage, ART, graston etc Explain the receptor system How can fascial manipulation assist in movement patterns? Research surrounding fascia work Take the seminar by Warren Hammer here. Warren Hammer Bio: In Chiropractic practice since 1960. Subsequently obtained an MS degree and a diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics. Realizing the importance of soft tissue with respect to the treatment of joints I took many courses in soft tissue methods. Since 1985 I have lectured nationally and internationally on soft tissue methods. Some of the soft tissue methods taught were Cyriax’s Friction Massage, Strain/Counterstrain, Post Facilitation Stretch, Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy, Graston Technique, Mattes’ Active Isolated Stretch, Mulligan methods, Voyer’s ELDOA technique and others. Authored and edited three editions of a text “Functional Soft-Tissue Examination and Treatment by Manual Methods” and more than 300 articles on soft tissue subjects, some of which are peer reviewed. SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Fletcher shares some of his observations about hip pain in endurance populations. Runners, cyclists and triathletes will be interested in this podcast session. Tom and I met years ago, working at an Ironman Triathlon. He is a triathlon junkie himself and is a great example of a treating doctor who gets into the culture of his patients. He practice in Sandy UT, just outside of Salt Lake City. Some of the topics we go into are: Hip Flexor Tightness Upper Quad Tightness Muscle Strains Hip Impingement Hip Labrum Tears Corrective Exercise And what day is the best to have a long ride in Utah. I’ve known Dr. Tom for years. As you will be able to tell on the podcast we have fun chatting. Dr. Tom Fletcher’s Bio: Dr. Tom Fletcher was raised in the Salt Lake Valley with his two brothers by his parents. He attended Brighton high school where he was involved with Rugby and as many Lake Powell trips as possible. After high school Tom moved on to the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Tom met his wife Delilah and continued his love for team camaraderie and athletics. It was not till Tom had nagging rugby injuries in college that he then sought out chiropractic care. The rest, as they say, is history. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. While in California, Tom excelled in academics and patient care for a variety of conditions. He was able to further his education by attending post-graduate programs such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and HandsOn Muscle Therapy. California also offered the unique opportunity for Tom to volunteer in many events as a student intern. These events included: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Cal Bearathon Triathlon, Bay Area 24-Hour Bike Race, Nami Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, Los Gatos Ballet, and many more. California also helped Tom develop his love for triathlon. During his first race he thought his lungs were going to explode as he climbed the Berkeley hills. Since then Tom has tried to compete in as many races as time allows. Races such as Stanford Treeathlon, Cal-Poly Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Cal Bearathon, and the San Francisco Marathon to name a few. Upon returning to Utah Tom has continued his athletic and post-graduate academic goals by working with chiropractic mentors to improve his skills in patient-based care. Tom has also had the unique opportunity to work with fellow Ironman triathlon doctors. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments is being on staff with fellow IRONMAN doctors at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, IRONMAN Coeur D’Alene, and IRONMAN Arizona. Functional Soft Tissue is a concept to help evaluate, treat, and stabilize soft tissue injuries through several different pathways: provocation, motion, resistance, functional positions or activities and proprioception. All of these pathways are neurological bombardments of the central nervous system which lead to the ultimate Control-Alt-Delete and reset of all of those tissues to allow for proper neurological function. - Dr. Greg Doerr JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Even with continuous use and the latest developments, taping still continues to get a bad rap about not being an effective form of healing the body's muscle tissues. However, there is, in fact, many beneficial uses of taping to help you move better and heal faster. In Wellness Force Radio 168, chiropractic, lecturer, owner of Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center, and developer of Functional Soft Tissue, FTMI and FAKTR, Dr. Greg Doerr uncovers the truth behind how taping helps as long as you follow the "if this, then that" methodology that was taught to him by Dr. Tim Brown. Tune in and learn the many benefits of taping for the human body including: Postural Correction Improvement of Instabilities Neuro Resetting Discover The Functional Soft Tissue Method Functional Soft Tissue is a resource to train clinicians to evaluate and treat motion. Doerr, DC, CCSP is a 14.5-hour hands-on seminar including an introduction to movement and kinetic chain evaluation in the treatment of soft tissue dysfunction, the use of FAKTR Concepts, and Rehabilitation for soft tissue remodeling. Functional Taping for Musculoskeletal Injuries (FTMI) with Gregory H. Doerr, DC, CCSP is a 12-hour hands-on course designed to demonstrate several different taping techniques to be used on a number of musculoskeletal injuries of the spine, upper extremity, and lower extremity. Dr. Doerr has been certified in kinesiotaping, spider tech, SPRT, and has developed many of his own signature taping styles. He has over 16 years of clinical taping experience. Listen To Episode 168 As Dr. Greg Doerr Uncovers: His decision to become a chiropractor and continue the family tradition. How his experience with sports medicine has helped him to become a better chiropractor. Why someone would tape in the first place and the importance of knowing what you're doing with taping. How kinesiology tape helps your body align by helping improve your movement and range of motion. Approaching Functional Soft Tissue and how tape plays a role with it. What he learned from his father about the art of healing and the emotional component to recovering from a physical injury. The difference between allopathic medicine and its approach to helping patients compared to other types of medicine like a holistic approach. How you can connect the soul to movement in order to heal. Why science is unclear about what kinesiology tape is and how it helps because of the lack of research available. How to use the "If then, then that" methodology to properly use taping for healing. The three application methodology for applying tape: neurological, postural structure, or anti-inflammatory focus. Tactile taping application and how it can help improve the postural structure and position. The main benefits of taping for the human body: postural correction, instabilities, and neuro resetting. Why good posture is vital for every single body part and good health. How long kinesiology tape lasts for and what to do if you plan on going for a trip. What to do if you notice any skin irritation from taping. How long it takes to teach someone proper movement and posture plus how to decide if taping is right for them. The starting steps to go down the road of healing your body. Power Quotes From The Show "A lot of people are taping, but actually don't even know what they're doing. First of all, you need to know whether or not taping is right for the situation by following different algorithms. The initial step is deciding whether or not you have an area that's dysfunctional." - Dr. Greg Doerr "I'm the hugest placebo on the planet. I'm upbeat, happy, and smiley. I have this constant high energy that would actually put a patient in a positive, emotional state. When someone can transpire that type of excitement, happiness, and energy to a patient, that patient will want to get better." - Dr. Greg Doerr "Since taping is a neurological stimulation, there's no such thing as sham taping. Whether you put the tape from top to bottom, across, or on a diagonal, you're still going to touch the same exact skin receptors. So, the significant change between somebody who's sham taped for somebody who's taped, it's not going to be large enough to make taping look like a relevant form of treatment. That's why we need better research on taping." - Dr. Greg Doerr "All of our injuries start with poor mechanical posture. When we talk about proper posture, everyone immediately thinks about the spine. However, every single body part needs good posture: the shoulder, the hip, the knee, foot, and ankle. All of these have their own neutral posture position and we can assist them with taping techniques." - Dr. Greg Doerr "We cannot eliminate stress from our lives, but we can have proper outlets for it. Television is not a proper outlet, but exercise and music are proper outlets. Ask yourself if you're finding ways to actually relieve your stress so that you can create some kind of balance within your own brain. That is our greatest challenge; trying to find some type of homeostasis within our mental well-being." - Dr. Greg Doerr Links From Today's Show: About FAKTR of Functional Soft Tissue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s-Vez8QOjk Dr. Greg Doerr Twitter LinkedIn Functional Soft Tissue Facebook Twitter YouTube Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center Facebook FAKTR - Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab FTMI - Scoliosis What Is The Graston Technique? Although most of us aren't training for the Olympics, we can still go for gold in our everyday activities. - Greg van den Dries Whether you're an Olympic athlete or a weekend warrior, we can all go for the gold every day by increasing our capacity for movement and reducing our pain and risk of injury. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Today we are live with Intelliskin at "Rock Stock 2017" with Greg van den Dries & Steven Capobianco, Founders of RockTape, as they explain how kinesiology tape and their various cutting edge tools are helping us increase our physical and emotional intelligence as we begin to move and fell better. Their elastic therapeutic tape and flagship product, RockTape, recoils in when applied to the skin and creates a biomechanical lifting effect which pulls the skin away from the underlying tissue. This lifting effect from the tape has 2 main functions. It stimulates skin receptors that communicate with the brain and reduces pain and increases your body awareness. Also, fluid dynamics are improved as skin is pulled away from the tissue to improve blood flow and swelling. Click To Order Rock Floss About Greg van den Dries Greg loves of running, cycling and swimming have contributed to a variety of minor sports injuries, and one of those injuries required physical therapy. The PT treated him and he finished the session by applying some tape to his leg. When he asked if this was the same tape he had seen during the Olympics, the answer was yes. Greg was skeptical about the tape, but after a week his injury was healing nicely and he also noticed that his legs felt pretty good after a long ride. He started doing more research on the tape’s effects and that’s when he discovered that the tape can be used to enhance performance. (Going stronger, longer…) After trying the tape on friends and family with good results, he got excited and talked to a number of companies about buying and selling the tape. The response Greg got was frankly, crazy: no one wanted to sell him tape unless he became “certified” in their specific taping methods. It was their way of making the tape more exclusive and expensive. He decided there had to be a better way to get this great product into the hands of those who needed it, so Greg located a source, modified the formula and formed RockTape. Dr. Christie received his B.S. degree from the Florida State University in Exercise Physiology and was an assistant strength & conditioning coach for the women's athletic teams. This is where he discovered his passion for working with athletes of all levels. His education and desire for learning continued at Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis where he specialized in Motion Palpation, golf biomechanics, and functional rehabilitation. Since graduating from http://healthfitchiro.com/chiropractic/ (chiropractic) school, Dr. Christie has been certified in Active Release Technique (A.R.T), A.R.T Biomechanics, Graston Technique, and Kinesio® Taping, which are the leading soft-tissue diagnostic and treatment protocols that deal with over-use strain that plagues today's society. The ART Biomechanics certification allows Dr. Christie to evaluate patients running and walking gait for any biomechanical deficiencies that could lead to altered performance or injury cause.Dr. Christie has been the Chiropractic/Sport Medicine Physician for multiple football academies in South Florida. This appointment is through the year 2013 and will include working with and advising the board of Athletic Trainers on maintaining and improving the quality of care for Certified Athletic Trainers in the state of Florida. In addition to his Chiropractic practice, Dr. Christie is also a Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified Golf Medical Practitioner Level 3. This certification has trained him to evaluate and prescribe golf specific fitness programs to all levels of golfers for performance enhancement and injury prevention. First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Becky H asks: Ever heard of using a nitroglycerin patch for healing injuries? I have a friend with a nagging achilles injury that just got back from a sports therapy clinic. They are using nitro patches on the inflammed site, then will be doing concentric stretches/strengthening of the area, all to hopefully get more blood into the site to promote healing. Have you heard of this? What would be potential side effects? Do you think it would be effective for just this type of injury, or might it potentially be useful for other injury site (namely ITBS on the knee). Mike Schrankel asks: What do you think of Low Volume/High Intensity weight training? One apparently reputable website (http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/LowVolumeTraining.html) goes to great lengths explaining that performing extra sets beyond one light warm-up and one heavy set of 8-12 reps yields only 0-5% more muscle growth. But most pros, including yourself recommend 3-5 sets. I've checked out your "Get Fit in 30 minutes or Less" (12/5/10) post, in which you recommend 5 sets. I like the short time commitment, but I'd like to do a wider variety of exercises with less sets if I can get decent results (i.e., more lean muscle, not "big and brawny") Lorna asks: why does it matter whether I burn fat or glycogen during my workout? I thought that if I am in deficit at the end of the day - fat will be used for energy - giving me a body fat loss. Whether I burn glycogen or fat - a deficit will mean fat stores reducing when it all balances out- will it not? Laurel asks: I have two questions. 1-Are there homeopathic or home remedies for Raynauds phenomena? 2- You tout magnesium, what do you think of epsom salts as a source? In my response to Laurel, I recommend the Future Health Now Encyclopedia (pictured right) and the Magnesium Flakes from Ancient Minerals. Jeff has a call-in question about soreness when getting started with weight training. In my response to Jeff, I recommend he listens to the first 5 episodes of the Get-Fit Guy's Quick & Dirty Tips Podcast Ralph Sanabria asks: Ben, I have a hard time running (more breathing). I've been told that I have athletic induced asthma. I've been told this because i have a hard time breathing during. and it sounds like wheezing. Is there anything that i can do to help with this? In my response to Ralph, I recommend oil of oregano. Cat asks: Do you know of any potentially harmful effects of chewing sugar-free gum? I am a student and find that chewing gum helps me to stay focused while I work, but it seems like I've developed sort of an addiction to it. Are there properties in sugarfree gum that could make it addictive and harmful to health? In my response to Cat, I mention "Spry" gum. Ryan asks: I recently read this article http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2011/02/california-deaths-after-lap-band-surgery-lead-to-lawsuits.html about complications that are occurring with lap band surgeries. My sister is considering a lap band surgery and this article really concerns me! I thought you might find it interesting and would like your thoughts on this. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
