The grasslands of Japan are beautiful, full of volcanos, and revered by the people living there. Japan's unique model of conservation method of Satoyamas is one we wish the US would model - one where people push to thrive alongside the environment, not claim or set it aside. Rerun: Disability-Inclusive Climate Solutions, with Michael Stein

IntroductionPeople with disabilities are disproportionately affected by climate change; however, they have been traditionally excluded from conversations about national plans and responses to climate change. Including the disabled community in decision making is key to addressing potential harms and designing effective, inclusive solutions. Disabled Community Disproportionately AffectedMany studies provide empirical evidence that climate change poses a particularly great risk for the disabled community. A study in Australia documented that between 2001 and 2018,  89% of heat wave fatalities were people with some type of disability, and actually many had multiple disabilities both physical and mental. Additionally, after Hurricane Harvey in Harris County, Texas in 2017, people with disabilities were disproportionately affected and exposed to harms. Areas flooded by Hurricane Harvey were overrepresented by disabled populations. The highest proportion of people living in public housing being exposed to environmental hazards were people with disabilities. While people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, they have often been excluded from decision-making surrounding climate change, including in  drafting national plans and climate responses. Inclusivity and Accessibility In PracticeEngaging people with disabilities in developing, designing and implementing climate resilient solutions can help protect their livelihoods and autonomy. Meaningful participation can look different in many ways including conducting research to have more data on how people with disabilities are affected and specific ways to help. As well, to develop new technologies and innovations that assist people with disabilities in climate emergencies like early warning systems, communication, and adaptive infrastructure. Spaces can be more inclusive and accessible to people with disabilities. More research is needed on infrastructure design that both reduces emissions and simultaneously will not put disabled people at more risk in climate emergencies, for example, adding ramps and automatic door openers, widening doorways, and having accessible bathrooms. It is also important to host public events in accessible locations to ensure that people with disabilities feel welcomed and valued. Methods of communication should also be accessible like using captions in videos, adding text descriptions and making online materials that work with screen readers so that low vision individuals can also access them. Disability-Inclusive Climate SolutionsIn addition to educating the community about the importance of disability-inclusive climate solutions and for the disabled community to be educated and equipped for climate disaster risk mitigation, it is vital for the disabled community to be part of the large-scale decision making process and promote meaningful participation. By providing people with disabilities with a greater understanding of the impacts that climate change will have on their lives, then they can be more able to respond to effects of climate change and access the resources they need. Expert Dr. Michael Stein points out that everyone knows their own needs and livelihoods best; hence, it is vital to reach out to the disabled community and include them in the conversation and decision making for climate solutions that will support the disabled community who are disproportionately affected by the effects of climate change. About our guestMichael Stein is the co-founder of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability. As a world leader on disability law, Dr. Stein participated in the drafting of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Dr. Stein became the first known person with a disability to be a member of the Harvard Law Review. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his work in disability rights. ResourcesAvci, Bratchell, Browning, Coates, Gissing, and Van Leeuwen, Heat wave fatalities, (2001-2008).Chakraborty, Collins, and Grineski, Hurricane Harvey and people with disabilities, (2019).Akyeampong, Alford, Chakraborty, Daniels-Mayes, Gallegos, Grech, Groce, Gurung, Hans, Harpur, Jodoin, Lord, Macanawai, McClain-Nhlapo, Stein, Susteren, Advancing Disability-Inclusive Climate Research, (2024).Szekeres, 8 Ways  to Include People with Disabilities in Climate Action, (2023).Nina D. Good day listeners this is your host Michael Martinz with new and improved Martinz ELEVATED Review broadcasting today from a rather chilly and snowing morning here in south central, British Columbia. In today's program we will re-examine a rather prophetic paper from May 2021 covering the potential, and now realised harmful effects of the C19 injections.  We will then cover the mechanisms by which glyphosate disrupts deuterium homeostasis and impacts human health. Today on the program we welcome back a regular contributor and dear friend, Dr. Stephanie Seneff.  A Senior Research Scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory,  Dr Seneff received her BSc in Biophysics, an MSc and Electrical Engineering degree, and a Ph.D degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - all from MIT.  For over three decades, her research interests have always been at the intersection of biology and computation. She has published over 170 peer reviewed articles, and has been invited to give multiple keynote speeches at international conferences. Her recent interests have focused on the role of toxic chemicals and micronutrient deficiencies in health and disease, with a special  emphasis on the pervasive herbicide, glyphosate, and the mineral sulfur.   Her book on glyphosate, entitled "Toxic Legacy:  How the Weedkiller Glyphosate Is Destroying Our Health and the Environment," was released by Chelsea Green publishers on July 1, 2021.  This book was selected by Kirkus Reviews as one of the best non-fiction  books of 2021.  Recently Dr. Seneff has become fascinated with the role of deuterium in health and disease, and the mechanisms by which glyphosate disrupts deuterium homeostasis. For those listeners who may have missed Dr. Seneff's previous appearances, those episodes for your reference are #124, #93, #73 and #22. Cities have lived with exclusionary zoning for decades, if not generations. Is inclusionary zoning the answer? Inclusionary zoning, or IZ, requires developers to set aside a share of units in new buildings for low- or moderate-income households, seeking to increase the supply of affordable homes and integrate neighborhoods racially and socioeconomically. But how well does it accomplish these goals? This week we're joined by the Mercatus Center's Dr. Emily Hamilton to discuss her research on how IZ programs have impacted homebuilding and housing prices in the Washington, D.C. region, and the ironic reality that the success of inclusionary zoning relies on the continued existence of exclusionary zoning. Also, Shane and Mike rant about nexus studies. Originally aired in 2022.Show notes:Hamilton, E. (2021). Inclusionary zoning and housing market outcomes. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Johnathan Whetstine from Fox Chase Cancer Center about his work on how histone demethylases affect gene expression and cancer cell stability. The Interview start by discussing a pivotal paper from Jonathan's lab in 2010, where they identified a role for the KDM4A histone demethylase in replication timing and cell cycle progression. They elaborate on the discoveries made regarding the link between histone marks, replication timing, and gene expression control. Jonathan explains the impact of microRNAs on regulating KDM4A and how protein turnover rates can influence cellular responses to treatments like mTOR inhibitors. Further, they explore the causal relationship between histone marks and replication timing, demonstrating how alterations in epigenetic regulation can affect genome stability. Jonathan shares insights from his latest research on H3K9 methylation balance at the MLL-KM2A locus, elucidating how these epigenetic modifications regulate amplifications and rearrangements in cancer cells. The episode concludes with a discussion on the establishment of the Cancer Epigenetics Institute at Fox Chase Cancer Center, aiming to bridge academia and industry to accelerate translational research in cancer epigenetics.   References Black, J. The value of books lies in the power of storytelling and sharing a range of perspectives. We don't want to just read what we know, we want to read stories that open our worldview. And in turn, that means getting into challenging, rewarding conversations. But we are not experts in any field — literature, race relations, politics, etc .— and we know that our reviews of these books come from a place of privilege. We encourage our community of readers to add to these conversations with their own thoughts, critiques, and questions. We want to open up a safe place for people. That being said, we also realize that getting into race, sexuality, gender, and other difficult topics can be triggering. We aim to include content warnings whenever they are applicable but we are not perfect. When Rimi and her husband chose to 'Take the Leap', it didn't seem TOO difficult.  Leaving a good corporate job with a decent nest egg and opening an island retreat center in the Azores seemed relatively safe.    Everything sounds good in theory. In your living room in Massachusetts.    However, things can go south in a hurry when 'island time' and contractors and language barriers all combine into a perfect storm.  That living room feeling can seem impossibly far away.   Hard times show us who we are inside, but they can also just be SO hard to navigate, and there are many who lose their way when the chips are down. In this episode, Rimi shares her story of resilience, of reinvention of self and heart, and the power of creativity and healing that led to her development of amazing Retreats that combine nature, yoga, island cuisine and deep renewal.  Black sand beaches, hot springs, volcanic energy and local foods and fruits all work a powerful magic that she harnesses to point in a different direction for our lives, one that can have a lasting impact on all of us for generations. The Impact of Chromatin Modifiers on Disease Development and Progression (Capucine van Rechem)

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Capucine van Rechem from Stanford University about her work on the impact of chromatin modifiers on disease development and progression. During her postdoctoral work, Capucine van Rechem studied the effects of Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in KDM4A on lung cancer cell lines and discovered a link between KDM4A and mTOR. She found that cells with the SNP had decreased KDM4A levels and increased sensitivity to inhibitors of the translation pathway. In addition, she found that a combination of histone marks was more predictive of replication timing than RNA expression alone, and identified the specific stages of the cell cycle where KDM4 primarily acts. Now in her own lab, the focus of her work shifted to SWI-SNF. The team has discovered the role of SWI-SNF in translation through polysome profiling and confirmed the interaction between SWI-SNF and translation. They are currently working to understand the functions of different complexes in translation and their connection to transcription.   References Black, J. C., Manning, A. Work From The Inside Out
223: Rise Beyond Resilience with Rimi Chakraborty

Work From The Inside Out

With an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Rimi Chakraborty swiftly worked her way "to the top" from cutting deals on Wall St. to the epicenter of the Boston technology hub in strategy and management consulting roles. Yet, her life could have gone very differently.  Born in Alabama, the only child of immigrant Indian parents (who met on their wedding day via an arranged marriage), Rimi's early years were deeply troubled. At 8, her family moved to Philadelphia, and soon after, her parents separated. Rimi lived with her mother, who worked evening shifts and developed an alcohol addiction, leaving her unavailable as a parent. While maintaining straight-A grades, Rimi joined a gang, nearly got expelled from school, and was on a first-name basis with the police. By high school, she moved in with her father and stepmother, where her life stabilized. She went to UPenn, graduated, and got a Wall Street job.  As she raced to the pinnacles of success, Rimi realized she was sacrificing her health and happiness. Instead of ignoring the voices in her head, heart, and body, Rimi chose to live and lead with purpose. In 2015 she and her husband moved to his homeland, the Azores, Portugal, and opened a lodge and learning center, Quinta Minuvida, where she leads retreats and leadership workshops. Rimi learned the language, embraced a new life, and redefined her metrics of success, enabling her to live in alignment with her values. This became the foundation for her Mindful Business Leader framework. Today, she brings her innovative tools and teaching to Fortune 500 companies, private companies, universities, and individuals to bridge traditional leadership with creative and emotional intelligence. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, follow Rimi's journey and work: Rimi is the co-founder of Rise Beyond Resilience to ROOTsilience and has a book coming out in October 2023. She teaches yoga and mindfulness globally and online, customizing mindfulness programs and courses for private and public companies.
