First taking hold of the American cultural imagination in the 1990s, the sexual purity movement of contemporary evangelicalism has since received considerable attention from a wide range of media outlets, religious leaders, and feminist critics. Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence (Oxford UP, 2015) offers a history of this movement that goes beyond the Religious Right, demonstrating a link between sexual purity rhetoric and fears of national decline that has shaped American ideas about morality since the nineteenth century. Concentrating on two of today's best known purity organizations, True Loves Waits and Silver Ring Thing, Sara Moslener's investigation reveals that purity work over the last two centuries has developed in concert with widespread fears of changing traditional gender roles and sexual norms, national decline, and global apocalypse. Moslener highlights a number of points in U.S. history when evangelical beliefs and values have seemed to provide viable explanations for and solutions to widespread cultural crises, resulting in the growth of their cultural and political influence. By asserting a causal relationship between sexual immorality, national decline, and apocalyptic anticipation, leaders have shaped a purity rhetoric that positions Protestant evangelicalism as the salvation of American civilization. From the purity reformers of the nineteenth century to fundamentalist leaders such as Billy Graham and Carl F.H. Henry, Moslener illuminates the evolution of a strain of purity rhetoric that runs throughout Protestant evangelicalism. Sara Moslener is a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Anthropology, and Religion at Central Michigan University, where she teaches courses on the history of religious and racial discrimination in the United States. Through events like the Silver Ring Thing and True Love Waits, and music like Modest Is Hottest by Mathew West and I Don't Want It by DC Talk, youth pastors unintentionally fostered shame and self-loathing in the lives of teenagers across the country. In this episode of the L3 Leadership Podcast, Doug Smith interview Denny Pattyn, Founder and President of Silver Ring Thing. Denny has been fighting an incurable cancer diagnosis for the last 5 years. Sixteen operations later, and a loss of 90 pounds, Denny is still continuing to lead strong. In this moving and incredibly inspiring episode, Denny shares what will truly matter at the end of your leadership journey.6 Key Takeaways1. Talks about how his time with the Lord is richer knowing that he’s going to be meeting the Lord in a matter of months, or possibly even weeks. 2. Denny talks about the new vision that God gave him for The Family Wins. The family is the number one group of people who evangelizes. Parently are the world’s largest evangelists. “The way a family wins is when the mother and father spend personal time with the Lord every day”... Because God’s word does not return void. 3. Denny Talks about how to discern God-given vision from what might be your own vision.I’m always very very careful to say that something is God’s until he demonstrates His power and provision through it. Vision is like throwing spaghetti against the wall. What stays and what falls away? What stays is God. What slides down and falls away, I forget about. What sticks, I stick with. 4. “Everyone who comes across my path is in danger of being evangelized.”Denny talks about taking a job as an Uber driver, just to have an opportunity to share the Gospel with young people.I want to be remembered as someone who couldn’t help but to share the Gospel. Every second of my life, it was the joy to share Jesus with people.5. I’m most proud of my family.I want to be remembered first of all as a good husband, then a good father. 6. My last advice to leaders is to try and stay as singularly focused as possible. Don’t lose sight of the one thing you’ve been called to you. Stay singularly focused on it. Links Mentioned in Episode 271:The Family WinsThe Family Wins Devotional BibleAbout Denny:Denny Pattyn, husband, father, visionary and an evangelist at heart was raised by two atheist parents which has fueled his passion for reaching under-churched people with the Gospel. Over the course of his ministry, he is most well-known for founding Silver Ring Thing (SRT) in 1995, in response to concerns for the escalating teen pregnancy rates in Yuma, Arizona. In 2000, he and his family returned home to Pittsburgh bringing the SRT vision with them.Since that time, SRT has hosted nearly 1,500 peer-led events in 9 countries impacting 725,000 attendees, with 265,000 students choosing to wear silver rings as a commitment to purity and nearly 133,000 students receiving Christ as Lord and Savior. From its inception, SRT recognized that true change in a person’s life only comes about with heart change. SRT events provided a unique platform to talk with teens about God’s plan for sex, love, and dating. Addressing their pain and acknowledging the guilt associated with sexual sin proved to be a powerful avenue to share God’s grace and the power of the Gospel.Hearing countless parents express their concern for their children and families at SRT events, coupled with the fact that a strong family is universally valued, supplied the motivation for Denny to step into a new role. This compelled him to pursue his latest project - The Family Wins (TFW). TFW’s vision is to see families strengthened and lives changed by embracing God’s wisdom and by spending time dailSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/l3leadership)

Brad speaks with Dr. Sara Moslener, author of Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence from Oxford University Press. Dr. Moslener outlines the history of purity culture from the 19th century to the present, highlighting the eugenicist and racist ideologies that fueled it. One of the often overlooked tropes is how sexual purity was enforced through appeals to patriotism--as if keeping the borders of the body secure would help keep the nation's borders impenetrable. They also discuss contemporary purity movements, such as Silver Ring Thing, that convince young people that living their best life is a matter of sexual chastity and giving away one's virginity will ruin their life irrevocably. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/straightwhiteamericanjesu/message
The mother of them all...Purity Culture. When we think about the “Things We Were Taught It Means To Be Christian”, sexual purity hits the top of the list for many of us, especially those who grew up in the faith in the 90s and 00s, when Purity Culture (True Love Waits, Silver Ring Thing, etc.) were at their peak. Cara Fifer has spent lots of time studying Purity Culture, how it has been propagated, and many of its unintended consequences...in particular, a culture of shame around sex and bodies that many of us have found very difficult to shake off as we've gotten older. In this episode, we raise some difficult, important questions; how do we address an increasingly sexualized culture that objectifies people (women in particular), without falling into the same trap by calling a woman's body a “stumbling block” (which is, in fact, an object)? How do we counsel young people in particular, but others at large, in how to navigate this sexualized world, without giving them shame? How can we offer a truly counter-cultural understanding of sex, physical bodies, and sexual desire that is healthy and life-giving? (And yes...Cara happens to be married to Tom.
Grace and Charlotte talk about their own expereinces with abstinence only education and purity culture. Grace shares her story of receiving a purity ring from her Father. The fusion of Church and State began with The Regan administration and continues to this day. Billions of dollars were spent on abstinence only education that proved to be unsucessful at preventing teen pregnancy and premarital sex. Over 20 years ago, there was a movement in our country to have teenagers sign pledges of abstinence until marriage. Some of those teens are now in their 30s and have a bitter taste in their mouth from "drinking that Kool-Aid" so to speak. Join Shannon & Michele as they have a candid conversation with Pastor Vincent Smith, who speaks on behalf of many in his generation who feel somewhat "duped" by the Purity Movement and the "Silver Ring Thing!"
