Happy pride month, heathens! Today, Jake and Brooke are joined by our first very special guest: Jordan! Together, we are taking a step back to marvel at Dobson's illustrious career as a professional homophobe. We trace Dobson's denial of homophobia, his active homophobia, and the hydra of political organizations he has created. Turns out, sometimes conspiracy theories are true: Dobson literally conspired in secret with others to push homophobic and misogynistic policies at every possible level of government.Works Cited (hyperlinks do not work on every podcast player, my apologies)“A Nation Shaken by the Sandy Hook Tragedy” broadcast by Dobson – Dec 17, 2012After Obergefell“Ballot measures in 11 states, all successful, aided the president's reelection bid and helped to swing the momentum, for a time, to the side of the anti-gay Right.” - https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/revolution-anti-gay-activists-threaten-uprising-if-supreme-court-approves-marriage-equality/Dr. Dobson's September Newsletter – Sept. 2019Evangelical Broadcaster Seeks “Pro-Family” Lobby by Russell ChandlerFamily Policy Alliance Financial Reports 2020 & 2019Focus on the Family focuses on homosexualsFRC fighting conversion therapy bansFRC's connection to FPCsGallagher, S. “Where Are the Antifeminist Evangelicals? It's episode 76 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Lots of material in this week's episode, including Pat's examination of new Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra's record as a former congressman, ambassador, Tea Party founder, Trump-backer, and lobbyist. Sure, Pete Hoekstra doesn't believe in demonic possession unlike his predecessor (at least, he hasn't publicly said he does) but there's no ideological daylight between Hoekstra and the now-ousted chair, Kristina Karamo. In fact, Pat has more information about Pete Hoekstra's past than he could talk about on the show this week. Click here for more! Then, Pat continues to delve into the White Christian Nationalist movement, which is taking over the Republican Party, both in Michigan, and across the country. And if Donald Trump wins this Fall, the Christian Nationalists will gain more power than we could ever imagine just a decade ago. Dr. Sara Moslener is a researcher, writer, and lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Anthropology, and Religion at Central Michigan University. Dr. Moslener is the author of "Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence," and she hosted an eight-part docu-series podcast called, "Pure White." She joins Pat to discuss history of White Christian Nationalism, and how it's steeped in the white culture myth that's prevalent in our nation's history. Finally, Pat's "Last Call" takes Gaza protesters to task for choosing to attack only progressive allies while refusing to protest Donald Trump and his White Christian Nationalist followers. First taking hold of the American cultural imagination in the 1990s, the sexual purity movement of contemporary evangelicalism has since received considerable attention from a wide range of media outlets, religious leaders, and feminist critics. Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence (Oxford UP, 2015) offers a history of this movement that goes beyond the Religious Right, demonstrating a link between sexual purity rhetoric and fears of national decline that has shaped American ideas about morality since the nineteenth century. Concentrating on two of today's best known purity organizations, True Loves Waits and Silver Ring Thing, Sara Moslener's investigation reveals that purity work over the last two centuries has developed in concert with widespread fears of changing traditional gender roles and sexual norms, national decline, and global apocalypse. Moslener highlights a number of points in U.S. history when evangelical beliefs and values have seemed to provide viable explanations for and solutions to widespread cultural crises, resulting in the growth of their cultural and political influence. By asserting a causal relationship between sexual immorality, national decline, and apocalyptic anticipation, leaders have shaped a purity rhetoric that positions Protestant evangelicalism as the salvation of American civilization. From the purity reformers of the nineteenth century to fundamentalist leaders such as Billy Graham and Carl F.H. Henry, Moslener illuminates the evolution of a strain of purity rhetoric that runs throughout Protestant evangelicalism. Sara Moslener is a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Anthropology, and Religion at Central Michigan University, where she teaches courses on the history of religious and racial discrimination in the United States. Dr. Sara Moslener was once a Pro-life, abstinence-only culture warrior who won awards for her fundamentalist activism, but she deconstructed and became one of the foremost researchers of purity culture and its harmful effects on society. From Calvin College to Claremont Graduate University, Dr. Moslener has become an academic force exposing the dangers of purity culture. Her first book, Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence , put her on the radar of everyone interested in the creepy history of purity culture, and she has a new book coming out next year called, After Purity. She is an incredible speaker and conversationalist, and she is definitely funnier than Brad Onishi. Brad speaks with Dr. Sara Moslener, author of Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence from Oxford University Press. Dr. Moslener outlines the history of purity culture from the 19th century to the present, highlighting the eugenicist and racist ideologies that fueled it. One of the often overlooked tropes is how sexual purity was enforced through appeals to patriotism--as if keeping the borders of the body secure would help keep the nation's borders impenetrable. They also discuss contemporary purity movements, such as Silver Ring Thing, that convince young people that living their best life is a matter of sexual chastity and giving away one's virginity will ruin their life irrevocably. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/straightwhiteamericanjesu/message

Episode Notes The Invention and Effects of American Adolescence - the teenager of the baby boom.
With a show hosted by all youth group kids and two former youth pastors we were bound to have an episode on the joys of adolescence eventually. Understanding teenagers can be a difficult undertaking, especially the further we are removed from our own youth. This week we look at what adolescence is, how it has changed and how we can help be a part of creating a space for the emerging generation to thrive. The episode finishes with a new segment called Top 3. Jeff, Mona and Allen share their top 3 fictional adolescent characters.
