What's the real difference between a reason and an excuse? One explains why something happened, while the other simply explains away responsibility. This distinction sits at the heart of today's deeply personal examination of our spiritual priorities and family commitments. We all claim we "don't have time" for what matters most—reading Scripture, praying meaningfully, connecting with our spouse—yet somehow find hours for scrolling, streaming, and sports. The uncomfortable truth is that most of our "can't" statements would be more honestly phrased as "won't." When was the last time you truthfully assessed your priorities? Are the people who matter most to you actually experiencing your focused time and attention? The episode delves into 1 Peter 2, exploring how Christians are called to be "living stones" who maintain excellent behavior even when suffering. Hypocrisy—presenting one face in public while living differently in private—remains one of the greatest obstacles preventing non-believers from embracing faith. Our actions must authentically reflect our professed values.Fascinatingly, we also journey through America's forgotten Christian foundations via the 1892 Supreme Court case Holy Trinity Church v. United States. Justice Brewer's opinion methodically documents how state constitutions explicitly acknowledged God and established religious obligations. Massachusetts' Constitution of 1780 even declared it both "the right and duty" of citizens to worship God publicly. These historical facts powerfully counter modern narratives suggesting America was founded as a secular nation. As Patrick Henry wisely advised, each of us has a "sphere of influence" where we can practice virtue and encourage it in others. What might change if you began using your sphere intentionally today? Join our growing community of listeners committed to personal renewal and spiritual restoration. Your feedback and prayers continue to shape this journey we're on together.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe
What if we could check our heavenly bank account balance with an app? How differently would we live if we could see our eternal rewards accumulating—or diminishing—in real time? This provocative thought experiment forms the heart of our exploration into priorities, faith, and America's Christian heritage.Jesse Cope challenges listeners to examine whether God truly comes first in their actions rather than just their words. "Have you made time for God today? Is He at the top of your list?" These questions reveal the gap between what we claim to value and how we actually spend our time. We often disguise our excuses as legitimate reasons, particularly when it comes to spiritual disciplines and relationships. The podcast takes a deep dive into James Chapter 5, examining warnings against unrighteous wealth and the call to patience in suffering. This scriptural guidance provides a powerful framework for understanding what truly matters in both our personal lives and our national identity.Speaking of national identity, Jesse presents compelling evidence from the 1892 Supreme Court case Holy Trinity Church v. United States, where Justice Josiah Brewer methodically documented America's Christian foundations. From Columbus's voyage (undertaken "by God's assistance") to the Mayflower Compact (created "for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian faith"), these historical documents clearly demonstrate that America's roots are firmly planted in Christian soil—contrary to revisionist histories that portray our founding as purely secular.Whether you're struggling with priorities, curious about America's spiritual heritage, or seeking to defend your faith more effectively, this episode provides both inspiration and practical tools. Join us as we explore what it means to live as if Christ might return at any moment, with our priorities properly aligned.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

It was lovely to sing in Holy Trinity Church's Advent Carol Service last Sunday - my first service back with the choir. Charlotte was also able to come along and the singing was good. It's been a difficult week for composition. Everything seems to have gone very slowly and I basically a week behind where I should be. I'm sure I'll catch up with only 4 anthems to go. I found the words in another Advent Carol Service booklet - this time from Belfast Cathedral - where my family are from, incidentally. I used the whole of the first long verse and part of the last. Here are the words I chose: Words for Anthem 48: Rorate coeli desuper! Heavens, distil your balmy show'rs; For now is ris'n the bright Daystar, From the rose Mary, flower of flowers: The clear Sun, whom no cloud devours, Surmounting Phoebus in the east, Is comen of His heav'nly tow'rs, Et nobis puer natus est. All Gloria in excelsis cry, Heaven, earth, sea, man, bird and beast; He that is crowned above the sky Pro nobis puer natus est.
Ahead of Opera Holland Park's upcoming production of A Christmas Carol, James Clutton sits down with the Will Todd (Composer) and David Simpatico (Librettist), Ceci Calf (Designer) and Martin Duncan (Director) in the rehearsal room. At Sinfonia Smith Square, Will Todd and David Simpatico's enchanting musical retelling of A Christmas Carol weaves the melodies of traditional Victorian carols and the midwinter chimes of handbells through each episode of Charles Dickens's seasonal ghost story. A Christmas Carol will run from 17-18 December at Sinfonia Smith Square in London, and on 16 December at Holy Trinity Church. operahollandpark.com/productions/a-…ristmas-carol/

It was good to return to Holy Trinity Church with the choir this week, even if it wasn't with Charlotte whose Coventry musical life is just getting going. As I write this, she is preparing for an audition to join the Coventry Cathedral Chorus - I'm sure she will enjoy that a great deal. It was Ollie's (our new interim Director of Music) first Sunday with the choir and we sang Choral Evensong. It went well. I'm looking forward to having some of my own anthems added to the choir's repertoire...one day... This week was a bit more of a struggle than last week, in terms of composition. It started off fine as I suddenly remembered that the main criterion of anthem competition I entered earlier in the year was to set words by Isaac Watts, the prolific 18th Century writer. I went back to the source I used to find the text for that anthem and rediscovered an enormous collection of words. 824 texts are mentioned with many linked to on the single page: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/bio/w/a/t/t/watts_i.htm As well as hymn words, Watts wrote more poetic texts and I chose a short one from Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Book 2, 1707–09, number 26. Here are the words (I missed out one verse): Words for Anthem 38: Lord, we are blind, we mortals blind, We can't behold Thy bright abode; O 'tis beyond a creature's mind To glance a thought half way to God. Infinite leagues beyond the sky The great Eternal reigns alone, Where neither wings nor souls can fly, Nor angels climb the topless throne. Yet, glorious Lord, Thy gracious eyes Look through, and cheer us from above; Beyond our praise Thy grandeur flies, Yet we adore, and yet we love.

It's been a week of changes for me and my family. Charlotte has started her university course and there is a new Interim Director of Music at Holy Trinity Church. Both of these changes are, of course, very positive. Charlotte is finding her feet and getting to know her lecturers and the rest of her group as well as settling in to her Uni Hall of Residence. What fun! Ollie is our new DoM but we all know him because he was our Organ Scholar a few years ago before going off to Uni. It's going to be fascinating to see how both of these new situations work out. Back to this week's anthem, only a few days after I found it I don't have a clear recollection of how I decided to use part of Psalm xxiv (24). However, the words are highly effective for an anthem and the end of the Psalm contains some of the most well-known anthem words of all: "Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors : and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory : even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory." If you don't know the anthem by Mathias take a listen to this really good Covid-time version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxj-hW9U6Cw I chose words form earlier in the Psalm: Words for Anthem 37: The earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is : the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas : and prepared it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord : or who shall rise up in his holy place? Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart : He shall receive the blessing from the Lord : and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Please do visit the website Anthem52.com, follow along on x.com - @realanthem52 or Instagram - @realanthem52 and send me a message to show@anthem52.com. This week I needed to be swift (not Taylor) to complete anthem 34 because I am visiting Bath with my wife to hear our daughter, Charlotte, singing at the RSCM Choir Course. This is the second year in a row that she has had the opportunity to attend the course, thanks to The Friends of the Music of Holy Trinity Church. 3 choristers from Holy Trinity are there this year, enjoying singing in a variety of contexts, including services at Bath Abbey. I'm very much looking forward to that trip. So I couldn't waste any time coming up with a text for the anthem. While looking through the Irish Book of Common Prayer, I spotted the opening to Psalm cxlv (145). These seemed like promising words and here they are: Words for Anthem 34: I will magnify thee, O God, my King : and I will praise thy Name for ever and ever. Every day will I give thanks unto thee : and praise thy Name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and marvellous worthy to be praised : there is no end of his greatness. I also added an Amen section in at the end (obviously) because the piece seemed to need it.
Send us a Text Message. Can elections alone fix our societal issues, or is there a deeper solution rooted in our values and faith? In this episode of the American Soul Podcast, we make a bold statement: real change begins with a return to our foundational values, not just at the ballot box. We start with a heartfelt prayer and emphasize the need to integrate faith into our daily lives and relationships. By dedicating time each day to Bible reading and prayer, we can cultivate a life centered on spiritual principles. We explore the historical significance of the Bible in America's founding and discuss the modern consequences of neglecting these practices. Moreover, we challenge the common excuse of having no time for our spouses, insisting on the importance of daily prioritization and love in our marriages. Our discussion continues with a fascinating look at the religious beliefs of America's founding fathers and the role of faith in governance. We'll unpack the predominant belief in the triune God among early Americans and imagine the controversy if a belief in God were still a requirement for public office today. Drawing from Justice Brewer's 1892 Supreme Court decision in Holy Trinity Church vs. United States, we underscore the enduring role of faith in America's legal and cultural heritage. We conclude with a heartfelt blessing for our listeners, their families, marriages, and our nation, all aimed at inspiring a collective return to our spiritual roots. Episode 121:For this episode I'm very pleased to welcome Katherine Sheil, Professor of English at the University of Minnesota for the second part of our conversation about Anne Hathaway, based around her book ‘Imagining Shakespeare's Wife: The Afterlife of Anne Hathaway'.In this part we went on to talk about the different views of Anne in fiction and non-fiction through the centuries. The breadth of views are quite astounding and we try to unpick how some of these at lease could have come about.Katherine is a leading expert on Anne Hathaway and her legacy to history so, following on from the recent episodes about Shakespeare's ancestry and early life in Stratford and London this was a perfect opportunity to talk to Katherine, and if you have not done so already you should probably listen to all the preceding season six episodes before returning here.Katherine Scheil is Professor of English at the University of Minnesota. She is the author of several books about Shakespeare, including The Taste of the Town: Shakespearean Comedy and the Early Eighteenth-Century Theatre; Shakespeare/Adaptation/Modern Drama (with Randall Martin); She Hath Been Reading: Women and Shakespeare Clubs in America; Imagining Shakespeare's Wife: The Afterlife of Anne Hathaway; Shakespeare & Biography (with Graham Holderness); and Shakespeare & Stratford. She is finishing a book on the history of women and Stratford-upon-Avon, and a book about Shakespeare and biofiction, called Father Shakespeare. She was one of the co-editors of the recent Annethology: Poems Re-Presenting Anne Shakespeare. Episode 119:For this episode I'm very pleased to welcome Katherine Sheil, Professor of English at the University of Minnesota. Katherine is Author of several books about Shakespeare, but today we particularly talk about her book about Shakespeare's wife called ‘Imagining Shakespeare's Wife: The Afterlife of Anne Hathaway'. It is a fascinating examination of the known facts of Anne's life and of how her persona has been used and abused through the centuries, as a means of examining and justifying views of Shakespeare, but also about how Anne has been viewed in her own right.Katherine is a leading expert on Anne Hathaway and her legacy to history so, following on from the last podcast episode about Shakespeare's early life and marriage this was a perfect opportunity to talk to Katherine, who adds much nuanced thought and detail to the subject of Anne's life, which adds to the basic facts I detailed last time, so if you have not listened to that episode yet it's probably a good idea to do so before returning here.Katherine Scheil is Professor of English at the University of Minnesota. Television host of Shakespeare Decoded on Gaia and real-life Indiana Jones Alan Green beams in to reveal the meaning of the mysterious codes hidden within Shakespeare's plays and sonnets on episode 156 of the Far Out with Faust podcast.→This is Part 2 of our series with Alan Green. Learn how he first made these amazing discoveries in Part 1 (ep. 143): https://youtu.be/-GoVzPE82agAlan Green is a British-born pianist, composer, author and Shakespeare scholar. He began in the music industry: he was a top thirty artist in the 80's with CBS and Arista records, then the musical director for Davy Jones and author of award-winning books on The Monkees. After an extraterrestrial encounter, Alan realized that his extensive musical training in classical and jazz disciplines prepared him to recognize deeply embedded patterns within Shakespeare's writing that orthodox academics have missed. He's spent the last 19 years devoted to deciphering a stunning web of codes hidden within the Shakespeare works which finally solves history's most persistent cover-up. He's the only person, in four hundred years, to have deciphered the codes that tell the whole story of who Shakespeare was and the scandalous royal secret that necessitated the cover-up. More than that, he's identified the actual location where the author himself says he left physical evidence… and then pulled off the daring heist necessary to secure incontrovertible scientific proof in the form of a radar scan.In this episode, Faust and Alan pick up where they left off in Part 1, and delve right into decoding the messages hidden in the works of Shakespeare. Topics include:-What is the true identity of the man we call “Shakespeare”?-How do you decode the secret messages hidden in Shakespeare's plays and sonnets?-Why are there secret codes hidden in the works of Shakespeare?-What mysteries are revealed in Shakespeare's sonnet dedication and his gravestone?-Was Shakespeare secretly a Catholic afraid of persecution in Protestant England?-What is the significance of the triple tau and the numbers 4, 2, and 6 in Shakespeare's writing?-What is the connection between John Dee and the Enochian tables?-How could the man we call Shakespeare have scientific knowledge ahead of his time?-Did the man we call Shakespeare communicate with extra dimensional beings?-What's hidden in the altar stone in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, England?-How did Alan Green uncover mysterious evidence within the altar stone in Stratford?….and much more!Watch Part 1(ep. 143) of our conversation with Alan: https://youtu.be/-GoVzPE82agConnect with Alan GreenWebsite: https://tobeornottobe.org/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bardcode/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2JIi9lAMN9lEJ6x_CO0RTQInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bard.code/Watch Shakespeare Decoded on Gaiahttps://www.gaia.com/series/shakespeare-decoded?ch=stCheck out Alan's book on AmazonDee-Coding Shakespeare: The Holy Trinity Solution Series - Book 1 https://a.co/d/8l1LoJu0:00 - Introducing Alan Green3:01 - What are the shakespearean and freemasonic codes20:33 - Diving into the puzzle, angels / extra dimensional beings and THE KEYS1:11:58 - Up to date: what is happening with Stratford and Alan's efforts for access, politics, etc#Podcast #Shakespeare

Due to the inconsistencies and ambiguities within his work and the scarcity of information about his personal life, Andrew Marvell has been a source of fascination for scholars and readers since his work found recognition in the early decades of the twentieth century. Born on March 31, 1621, Marvell grew up in the Yorkshire town of Hull, England, where his father, Rev. Andrew Marvell, was a lecturer at Holy Trinity Church and master of the Charterhouse. At age twelve Marvell began his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. Four years later, two of Marvell's poems, one in Latin and one in Greek, were published in an anthology of Cambridge poets. After receiving his bachelor's degree in 1639, Marvell stayed on at Trinity, apparently to complete a master's degree. In 1641, however, his father drowned in the Hull estuary and Marvell abandoned his studies. During the 1640s Marvell traveled extensively on the continent, adding Dutch, French, Spanish, and Italian to his Latin and Greek—missing the English Civil Wars entirely.Marvell spent most of the 1650s working as a tutor, first for Mary Fairfax, daughter of a retired Cromwellian general, then for one of Oliver Cromwell's wards. Scholars believe that Marvell's greatest lyrics were written during this time. In 1657, due to John Milton's efforts on his behalf, Marvell was appointed Milton's Latin secretary, a post Marvell held until his election to Parliament in 1660.A well-known politician, Marvell held office in Cromwell's government and represented Hull to Parliament during the Restoration. His very public position—in a time of tremendous political turmoil and upheaval—almost certainly led Marvell away from publication. No faction escaped Marvell's satirical eye; he criticized and lampooned both the court and Parliament. Indeed, had they been published during his lifetime, many of Marvell's more famous poems—in particular, “Tom May's Death,” an attack on the famous Cromwellian—would have made him rather unpopular with royalists and republicans alike.Marvell used his political status to free Milton, who was jailed during the Restoration, and quite possibly saved the elder poet's life. In the early years of his tenure, Marvell made two extraordinary diplomatic journeys: to Holland (1662–63) and to Russia, Sweden, and Denmark (1663–65). In 1678, after eighteen years in Parliament, Marvell died rather suddenly of a fever. Gossip from the time suggested that the Jesuits (a target of Marvell's satire) had poisoned him. After his death, he was remembered as a fierce and loyal patriot. Now considered one of the greatest poets of the seventeenth century, Marvell published very little of his scathing political satire and complex lyric verse in his lifetime. Although he published a handful of poems in anthologies, a collection of his work did not appear until 1681, three years after his death, when his nephew compiled and found a publisher for Miscellaneous Poems. The circumstances surrounding the publication of the volume aroused some suspicion: a person named “Mary Marvell,” who claimed to be Marvell's wife, wrote the preface to the book. “Mary Marvell” was, in fact, Mary Palmer—Marvell's housekeeper—who posed as Marvell's wife, apparently, in order to keep Marvell's small estate from the creditors of his business partners. Her ruse, of course, merely contributes to the mystery that surrounds the life of this great poet.Andrew Marvell died on August 16, 1678.-bio via Academy of American Poets Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

The Summerbell Window - a beautiful stained glass window - sits in the Holy Trinity Church in Millers Point, Sydney. It's not like the other windows: it shows a stormy sea, with Jesus calming the tempest. It commemorates the loss of the Yarra Yarra - a steamer captained by William Geoge Summerbell, the namesake of the window - which disappeared on the morning of the 15th of July 1877, after encountering a terrible storm off the coast of Newcastle.Witness to the tragedy was Williams's father, Thomas. It was the following year that the Summerbell Window was erected in Holy Trinity Church.Jesus didn't calm this storm, nor did He walk on water that morning. The window itself acknowledges this."Save me Oh God, for the waters have come into my soul."The storms we face are real, and the grief we encounter can be like an unrelenting flood.A storm at sea can bring about an internal storm of pain. But knowledge of the truth - of God - can help us face this storm in a new light. The Psalms attest to this.Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold.I have come into the deep waters;the floods engulf me. I am worn out calling for help;my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.Yet at the same time:I will praise God's name in songand glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please theLord more than an ox,more than a bull with its horns and hoovesThe poor will see and be glad—you who seek God, may your hearts live! The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.Psalm 69: 1-3, 30-33

VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023 - Show Notes Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns. FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death. The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023) Thanks again to Keith for the show notes and thanks to everyone for listening - please tell a friend (or benignly neutral acquaintance) and ask them to do the same! For this interview, we welcome Jonny Hughes, an English pastor and close friend of Jason's, joining us all the way from Nottingham, England. Jonny's journey as a pastor began in London and Southern California, where he served in various churches for nearly a decade. In 2016, along with his wife, Amy, Jonny made the significant move to Nottingham to establish Trinity Church, a name that serves as a tribute to the longstanding legacy of Holy Trinity Church, which faithfully served Nottingham for over a century. Jason and Jonny spend the bulk of the conversation discussing the pivotal moments and attitudes that paved the way for the founding and flourishing of Trinity Church. We hope you find Jonny's reflections in this episode as moving and helpful as we did. Bio | Jonny Hughes is the Lead Pastor of Trinity Church Nottingham, a vibrant Church of England congregation that he and his wife, Amy, founded seven years ago. Over the past 15 years, Jonny has devoted his time to various roles in church leadership, serving communities in Nottingham, London, and previously, California. 527. Cheryl White joins us to discuss her research into the Yellow Fever outbreak in Shreveport in 1873, and the priests who died while ministering to patients suffering from the fever. Dr White recently unveiled a report on the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1873 and the COVID outbreak of 2020. "The sacrifice of five Catholic priests who gave their lives ministering to people in Shreveport during the 1873 yellow fever epidemic is memorialized in stained glass at Holy Trinity Church in downtown. Their stories have been regularly recounted across nearly 150 years of news reports and histories of Shreveport. The city's Pierre Avenue is named in honor of one of them, Father Jean Pierre, the first pastor of Holy Trinity. And now their story is becoming more widely known in the Catholic Church in the U.S. and beyond with the formal opening of their sainthood case" (Catholic Herald). This week in Louisiana history. It's Friday, December 23rd, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Radical Hindus severely injured Christians in India w/ bamboo sticks Christians in 20 villages in the Narayanpur and Kondagaon districts in the Chhattisgarh state of India were attacked this week by radical Hindu nationalists for refusing to re-convert from Christianity back to Hinduism, reports International Christian Concern. Hindu nationalists used bamboo sticks to attack Christians on Sunday, December 18, as Christians gathered for worship. Tragically, several people were severely injured and hospitalized, while others fled to the jungle or to nearby police stations. The attackers looted and destroyed the homes of many Christians and desecrated three churches. One witness said, “Small kids and women with their families were sitting in open places in biting cold, with no food or water, warming their hands with their breath.” India is the 10th worst country in the world for the persecution of Christians. Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Church changes Christmas carol lyrics to recognize “queer” All Saints with Holy Trinity Church in Loughborough, Britain decided to take Jesus and the Nativity out of Christmas. Instead, the Bible-rejecting church promoted a message for the "queer and questioning," reports Summit News. Rachael Brind-Surch, the trainee priest, boasted of their outrageous alterations to the traditional "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" carol. Listen to the disturbing lyrics in the first verse of the altered hymn. "God rest you, queer and questioning, your anxious hearts be still, Believe that you are deeply known and part of God's good will. For all to live as one in peace the global dream fulfilled. O tidings of comfort and joy." Another revision from the misguided British church said, "God rest you also, women, who by men have been erased, Through history ignored and scorned, defiled and displaced; Remember that your stories too, are held within God's grace." The verses replaced the actual lyrics of the carol, which talk about the nativity and how Christ came to “save us all from Satan's power.” John 12:31 says, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.” 31 GOP Reps vow to block bills by GOP Senators who vote for Biden's $1.7 trillion spending bill Thirty-one House Republicans signed onto a letter Wednesday, vowing to block legislation from any GOP senator who dares to vote for Biden's massive $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package during the lame duck session, reports Breitbart. On Tuesday, 13 House Republicans signed a letter promising to block the legislative priorities of any Republican senator who votes for the omnibus deal with Democrats just days before Congress leaves town for Christmas. They wrote, “This 4,155-page bill spends $1.7 trillion to further empower the Biden administration's tyrannical attack on the liberty and security of our constituents, and it must be opposed with any fiber of political fortitude Senate Republicans still have. “It will add to our $31 trillion national debt, digging a deeper hole for our children and grandchildren to crawl out of. “As such, we reiterate that if any omnibus [bill] passes in the remaining days of this Congress, we will oppose and whip opposition to any legislative priority of those senators who vote for its passage – including the Republican leader. We will oppose any rule, any consent request, suspension voice vote, or roll call vote of any such Senate bill, and will otherwise do everything in our power to thwart even the smallest legislative and policy efforts of those senators.” Turning Point USA vs. the RNC's Ronna Romney McDaniel After three losing cycles, the grassroots want change at the Republican National Committee according to a new Turning Point Action poll. 78.4% DISAPPROVE of Ronna Romney McDaniel's job as Chair of the RNC, 84% want RNC members to listen to the grassroots, and Ronna has only 1.7% support. McDaniel is the niece of Republican in Name Only Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. Turning Point is supporting attorney Harmeet Dhillon who announced her candidacy on December 5th with the proclamation, “Republicans are tired of losing.” Dhillon won in a landslide in the Turning Point Action Poll. Appearing on Brian Kilmead's radio show, Ronna Romney McDaniel was upset, and attacked the largest conservative student organization in the country. ROMNEY McDANIEL: “I'm going to say something about Turning Point. They do great conferences. How many young voters did they register? How many youth voters turned out this cycle? How about the college kids in Arizona where they're headquartered? If you're going to hold the RNC accountable, start looking at these outside organizations and ask them what they did. And this is a group that's taken over the youth vote, they've taken over college campuses and they need to be held accountable. But this is Turning Point and Harmeet trying to take over the RNC.” In a series of five tweets, Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, responded to McDaniel by saying, “Turning Point logged more than 500,000 volunteer hours this election cycle. Turning Point Action directly contacted and engaged over 5 million voters. We hosted well over 100 major door-knocking events and rallies in target states and districts, recruited over 2,000 new precinct leaders, and registered tens of thousands of new voters. Instead of attacking the only youth organization in the country actually doing something, maybe you should be thankful we are doing the work.” Kari Lake legal team finds 42.5% of ballots examined were invalid And finally, Arizona Republican Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake's legal team dropped a potential legal bomb on Wednesday, reports RedState.com. She tweeted, “48 of 113 ballots reviewed during our examination were 19-inch ballots produced on 20-inch paper. This one-inch discrepancy caused chaos on Election Day, causing the mass rejection of these votes as they were attempted to be read through the tabulators.” That means that 42.5% of the ballots examined were invalid. While the Democrat, Katie Hobbs, was declared the winner, she won by just 17,116 votes, a differential of seven-tenths of one percentage point, reports The National Review. Lake is hoping this review might lead to calling Hobbs' victory into question. Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, December 23rd in the year of our Lord 2022. Phillips Brooks was the minister of Holy Trinity Church in Philadelphia and visited Bethlehem in December of 1865. When Pastor Brooks traveled to the Holy Land, the journey included a horseback ride from Jerusalem to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. Back then, it truly was a small village, far removed from the bustling city it would later become. By nightfall, he was in the field where, according to tradition, the shepherds heard the angelic announcement. Then he attended the Christmas Eve service at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Years later, the pastor recalled that first visit to the place of Jesus' birth. “I remember especially on Christmas Eve, when I was standing in the old church in Bethlehem, close to the spot where Jesus was born, when the whole church was ringing hour after hour with the splendid hymns of praise to God, how again and again it seemed as if I could hear voices I knew well, telling each other of the ‘wonderful night' of the Savior's birth.” He wrote a poem about his experience, asking the church organist to set it to music for the children's choir to sing at Christmas time. O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight Let's pray. Dear Lord, what a gift we were given long ago in the form of baby Jesus. The birth of our Savior in a small town stable changed everything, and we are so grateful for His legacy of hope. Help us to focus on the true reason for this season of celebration. Amen.

We have been hitting the books and hitting road & rails! Emily had a week-long vacation on Martha's Vineyard and read a ton. She also visited Bunches of Grapes bookstore and FOUR libraries on the island – West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and Edgartown. Chris attended a virtual event through the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library with Raymond Clemens who shared some of the earliest maps in their current exhibition, The World in Maps, 1400-1600. Check out the link in our show notes to watch Ray's presentation. We also had two delicious Biblio Adventures together. The first was a literal Couch Biblio Adventure where we sat on the couch at Book Cougars HQ and ate pizza while watching Malinda Lo's event at Simmons University. Her YA novel LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB was this semester's joint read at Simmons. Days later we were riding the rails to meet Aunt Ellen at Grand Central in Manhattan. After hugs and a pit stop, we took the subway to Brooklyn where we spent the day walking around and experiencing bookish adventures and culinary delights. Stops included: The Center for Fiction, Smith Street Bagels, Books Are Magic, the Brooklyn Public Library at Carroll Gardens, and La Vara, where we were joined by Aunt Ellen's partner Chris. We topped off the day with an author event and saw Maggie O'Farrell talking about her new book, THE MARRIAGE PORTRAIT, at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church. It was a perfect day. We even had time to grab some pastries from Magnolia Bakery before boarding the train home. Lots of books, good food, and great company. Phew, this is a long episode blurb and we haven't even mentioned any books yet! We'll list our “Just Read” titles: CANNERY ROW – John Steinbeck THE FALL GIRL – audiobook narrated by Marcia Clark and Cathy LePard SMALL GAME – Blair Braverman SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE – Claire Keegan MAD WOMEN'S BALL – Victoria Mas (translated by Frank Wynne) LIBRARY GIRL: How Nancy Pearl Became America's Most Celebrated Librarian – Karen Henry Clark (illustrated by Sheryl Murray) DARK RIVERS TO CROSS – Lynne Reeves release date 11/8/2022 MISS GRIEF AND OTHER STORIES – Constance Fenimore Woolson (edited by Anne Boyd Rioux) OPEN WATER – Caleb Azumah Nelson LOVECRAFT COUNTRY – Matt Ruff THE SALT PATH – Raynor Winn (audio) THE LUNAR HOUSEWIFE – Caroline Woods If the blurb is long, you know the episode is long, too, but stick around to the end (or fast forward if you're crunched for time) to listen to our conversation with writer, graphic artist, English professor, and athlete KELCEY ERVICK. Her new graphic memoir THE KEEPER: SOCCER, ME, AND THE LAW THAT CHANGED WOMEN'S LIVES is fantastic! We give it four paws up. Check out this wonderful blurb from another graphic memoirist you may have heard of: “The Keeper is a triumph! Kelcey Ervick's rollicking visual storytelling makes this information-packed lesson in women's sports history both hilarious and surprisingly moving. Do not be deceived by her loose, exuberant drawings—the level of writerly control at play in this beautiful book is prodigious.” - Alison Bechdel, author of the New York Times bestselling Fun Home and The Secret to Superhuman Strength One more thing and then we're putting our noses back into our books! Reminder that our current readalong book is MURDER ON THE RED RIVER by Marcie R. Rendon. Please email us (bookcougars@gmail.com) if you would like to participate in the Zoom conversation on Sunday, December 4th at 7 PM (ET). We also have a discussion thread over on Goodreads.
