Today we invite you into the heart and history of Sister Kathleen Skog, OSF, a devoted Franciscan Sister with an incredible journey of faith, dedication, and service spanning over six decades. This illuminating interview sheds light on Sister Kathleen's early call to religious life, her impactful roles in education and healthcare, and the profound influence of Franciscan spirituality in her mission. Sister Kathleen's story begins in the vibrant suburbs of Minneapolis, where her encounter with the Immaculate Conception Catholic School nuns at a tender age inspired her lifelong commitment to God's call. With candid reflections, she shares her experiences of growing up, her early entrance into the convent, and the rigorous yet rewarding path of becoming a Franciscan Sister. Delving into the historical context, Sister Kathleen recounts the Franciscan Sisters' pivotal role in Texas healthcare, originating from a small newspaper article that led their Mother House from Sylvania, Ohio, to establish St. Francis Hospital in Brenham. This tale of faith and providence highlights the sisters' adaptability and their unwavering commitment to serving communities in need. Throughout the interview, Sister Kathleen's warmth and wisdom illuminate her diverse roles—from teaching young minds in Detroit to overseeing food services at St. Jude Hospital in Brenham, Texas. Her stories of integrating faith into education, embracing community life, and facing health challenges with grace, offer a profound testament to the joy and fulfillment found in a life dedicated to service and God. As the discussion unfolds, listeners gain insights into the Franciscan Sisters' mission, their foundational values rooted in St. Francis of Assisi's teachings, and the evolving needs of their ministry. Sister Kathleen's reflections on the beauty of communal support, the gift of friendship, and the enduring presence of God in her life serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can make through a life of dedication and love. For this month's Academy Podcast episode, in honor of March and the celebration of women's history, we have chosen to highlight the life of Saint Teresa of Avila through the scholarship and spiritual guidance of Sister Kathleen Flood. Sister Kathleen bears witness to the courageous life of St. Teresa, whose devotion to Christ led her to become a reformer of the Carmelite order, a resister against the Christian nationalism of 16th century Spain and the Spanish inquisitions, and a profound teacher on the life of prayer. An Illinois native, Kathleen R. Flood, OP, presently resides in Wisconsin. She became a member of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation (the Order of Preachers) in 1981, and served as a campus minister in Illinois and Wisconsin. She came to Nashville in 1988, serving for many years as University Catholic Chaplain at Vanderbilt University, as well as providing a ministry of spiritual direction, leading retreats, preaching, and teaching. Sr. Kathleen is a graduate of the Graduate Theological Foundation and holds the Doctor of Ministry Degree in Christian Spirituality. She holds multiple degrees and currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Doctor of Ministry program at Drew University in New Jersey and is a long-time faculty for The Academy for Spiritual Formation.

This month, I am speaking with Sister Kathleen Ryan, the Executive Director of the Dominican Literacy Center in Aurora. Their programs help women find a voice in this country. The organization began in 1993, in her words, on a shoestring budget and a broken card table. Today, they serve hundreds of individuals each year. We also talk about Sister Kathleen's personal journey and commitment to serving new immigrants in our community, and how her educator background took a turn into literacy education for immigrants. She also shares the importance of volunteers for their mission. Enjoy our conversation.

At school I was always acting out in religion class, and the nun was always throwing me out of the classroom, down to the library. And the nun who was the librarian, we had this thing going, and she'd say, "In detention again, Kathleen Deignan?" and I'd say, "Yes, mother," and she'd say, "Well, read that." Boom! "Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander." The next couple of days, she'd slam something down, it would be my favorite — "The Sign of Jonas" — or something... and then I joined the Congregation, and I was blessed to have an old training, and we had a lot of silence, and I had a lot of Merton.

How can we live a contemplative life in the midst of our ordinary busy world? An inspiring, enlightening interview by Claude Blanc with Sister Kathleen about her new book on Charles de Foucauld.
Aired 2/12/19, 1640AM Ktalkmedia.com, Salt Lake CityElon Musk isn't my personal Savior. My Aunt Kay has earned that worthy honor. Sister Kathleen is my aunt, inspiration, hero and . . . . ticket to heaven. (As long as I keep trying my best, I'm hoping it'll be nothing more than a close call. I'd hate to have her "play every card" to get me there.) I don't doubt that she can pull it off, but, with her guidance, I'm praying that she doesn't have to perform a miracle. Sister Kathleen also doesn't think she's anything special, but the entire Universes knows (and believes) otherwise. God Bless Aunt Kay.
This month's episode draws from Sister Kathleen's teaching on "Spirituality and Ways of Healing" at a Two-Year Academy in Alabama in February 2006. Inspired by the Gospel of Luke's passion narrative, Sister Kathleen offers wisdom and insight on healing and wholeness, teaching that in order to be healers in the world we must give up our need for power and, instead, follow the Way of Love.
