Ed Goddard is the kind of guy who draws cherry blossoms on his Asics prototype shoes (I know because he showed me on our Zoom call). At 26, the Australian distance runner with a mullet and love of rock and roll has been on the rising star list for a while now. In this conversation we talk about Ed's triangle of fun – running, swimming and music (in no particular order), the importance of relishing the little things in life (sandwiches), and how to keep running fun (even when it's your job). We also speak about broken bones, the stress of hunting Olympic qualifiers, and Ed's experience with relative energy deficiency in sport. Ed Goddard is from Mossman, New South Wales. He has a 10,000m PB of 28:23 and a half marathon PB of 62:16, and has his sights set on bringing those times down so he can convert to a faster marathon (current PB of 2:12:52). Ed loves music from bygone eras and has about 800 vinyl records in his collection. If he's not running with his phone in his hand blasting tunes, he'll be swimming at the beach or watching the Chicago Cubs. Ed spent a brief stint running for Iona College in New York and has degrees in Property Economics and Sports Communication. -- Ed's Instagram: @edgoddard3k Ed's Strava: https://www.strava.com/pros/26943045 Ed's Spotify playlist: Songs to crash your car to Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

(Hour 1 with Cook and Joe) The guys are reminiscing about their trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this past Friday. I am wearing an Iona College hoodie today and the conversation shifts to Rick Pitino and the old Big East days. Dan Campbell is facing a lot of scrutiny from yesterday's ultimate collapse against the San Francisco 49ers. He left nearly guaranteed points on the board by not kicking a field goal. He chose to go for it and it backfired. There were multiple choices he made that ended up backfiring and Joe had a problem with them. We hear a sound byte from the Campbell press conference, who looked like a man defeated. We take some phone calls about the Lions collapse. Callers agree that it was a combination of Dan Campbell's "macho-ism" and analytics that was the reason for the Lions' downfall.

The Pitching Command Show with guest Sean McGrath, University of Iowa pitching coach. With everyone throwing hard nowadays, command is now the separator. It's no longer a choice between being either a power pitcher or a finesse pitcher today. You need to be both, velocity with command. Command is what separates pitchers from the pack today. Sean graduated from Lafayette College in 2012 and spent the summer competing in Independent ball before becoming the youngest division 1 pitching coach the next year at Iona College. He then spent the next seven years in division 1 baseball before making the move to professional baseball; working three years in the Mariners organization. After spending the 2022 season with the Double A team, he took the pitching coach opportunity at the University of Iowa and is now in his second season. In your eight years of college baseball, you've developed 6 pitchers who have been drafted in the top 8 rounds, including MLB all-star George Kirby who is the definition of a command artist. A great discussion about training and measuring pitching control, command, sequencing and what it takes to pitch at higher levels of baseball. Brought to you by Command Trakker , the professional-grade smart target that MLB teams and top D1 programs rely upon for automated measurement and training of pitching control, command, and sequencing. What does it take to be a good coach? What does it take to lead others to success? We explore these questions and many more with the one and only Coach Ricardo Santos, coach of the Stanford cross country and track teams. Coach Ricardo Santos is an accomplished distance coach at Stanford University, where he has been the primary men's distance coach since August 2019. He has had remarkable success, including coaching Charles Hicks to become the first Stanford runner, male or female, to win an NCAA individual cross-country title in 2022. Under Santos' guidance, the Stanford men's cross-country teams have achieved 13 top-10 finishes in NCAA championships and won numerous regional and conference championships. Santos has been recognized with multiple Coach of the Year honors, including USTFCCCA West Region and Pac-12 Men's Coach of the Year in 2022. His coaching prowess extends to track events as well, with his athletes setting records and earning international recognition. Santos brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role, having previously coached at the Boston Athletic Association and Iona College. This conversation encapsulates the subjects of what it takes to coach a successful team. We discuss culture, instilling patience, a process mindset, and what makes a good leader. We also go through his recent success with athletes Charles Hicks (who won the 2022 NCAA XC title) and Ky Robinson (who won the 2023 5k/10k Outdoor titles). It was an absolute pleasure having a conversation with Coach Santos and dissecting his extremely successful career so far! I know you'll find value from this conversation with one of the best coaches in the world. There's a saying, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." Today's guest is Joe Schrank, a social worker, interventionist, community advocate, and co-founder of “The Fix.” Throughout this episode, Joe discusses the shift in perspective we can have regarding those suffering from addiction. He shares his struggle with addiction, how he went through recovery, and how he helps his clients by meeting them where they are with their addictions. Joe emphasizes that it is necessary to look at all types of recovery instead of thinking that the traditional recovery techniques are the only options. Tune in today to learn more about how you can support someone in your life who is facing addiction, or if you need help with substance use. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:40] September is Recovery Month. Joe wants to bring awareness to Recovery Month. [3:32] How does Joe define recovery? [6:38] What are other roads to recovery aside from abstinence? [10:06] Does AA position itself toward a particular group of people? [15:50] What would it look like if we moved away from criminalization to focus on mental health instead? [19:00] Why do people of wealth and affluence who live in a bubble not get help? [23:02] What kind of screening could doctors do to help those with mental illness? [24:56] What do we value, and why do we not value people with mental health issues (by the way, we all do)? KEY TAKEAWAYS: We need to normalize mental health care: talk about it, support people, and offer early intervention to those who need it. Society would benefit from looking at people who struggle with addiction outside of “they have an addiction” and looking more closely at what they struggle with. People do get better. Recovery is all around us, even if it doesn't look like the “traditional” type of recovery. Every person will struggle with mental health challenges in their life. Whether it's life changes, divorce, family growth, retirement, or something else, there will be a time when each of us struggles with a mental issue. BIO: Social worker, interventionist, community advocate, cofounder of TheFix.com, Joe Schrank has spent his life in and around active alcoholism. Joe underperformed on the USC campus, preferring to blame coaches and professors than to enter mental health care. After a girl dumped him for his “drinking problem,” Joe joined treatment for depression and alcoholism. After stabilizing, he returned to school and studied clinical social work at Iona College and then the University of Illinois. Following a tenure at Promises in Malibu, CA, Joe established the first sober living facility in New York City –, Loft 107. Frustrated with the lack of media attention given the recovery community, Joe founded TheFix.com with Maer Roshan. A big believer in “meeting the client where the client is,” Joe founded High Sobriety, the first cannabis-inclusive treatment center, using medicinal cannabis as an option for some people. Joe continues to advocate for public health policy over-incarceration, alcohol tax justice, and ending the violent and racist drug war.
