Have you noticed how southern Africa tends to be hit by deadly cyclones that leave a trail of destruction? Right now the people of Mozambique are trying to piece their lives together after Cyclone Jude battered the country this month. Before it, two others, Chido and Dikeledi, hit the same part of southern Africa in quick succession. All three claimed dozens of lives, leaving schools, homes and other buildings severely damaged. Today Alan Kasujja sits down with Lehlohonolo Thobela of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria. “If you speak about Mozambique, Madagascar, South Africa, those are usually the areas that usually experience tropical cyclones. Geographically, the Indian Ocean is in the eastern parts. The Indian Ocean itself is where cyclones are born. Why? Because they need warmth”, Lehlohonolo says. Alan also hears from Mary Louise Eagleton of UNICEF, who is in Maputo. She's been to the most affected areas and shares what she's seen.

South Africa has been ranked the most targeted country in Africa for cybercrime, accounting for 40% of all ransomware attacks and nearly 35% of infostealer incidents on the continent. This is according to global cybersecurity company ESET’s latest bi-annual Threat Report, which highlights key trends shaping the digital security landscape. In June 2024, South Africa’s National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) reported that it was hit with a ransomware attack, which disrupted its systems, deleted backups, and stole 1.2-terabytes of data – in the middle of dealing an mpox outbreak. The breach also put sensitive medical data of millions of patients at risk. More recently, in January 2025, the South African Weather Service disclosed that its ICT-base systems were disrupted by an attack led by ransomware-as-a-service group RansomHub – who have racked up hundreds of victims, since they were first detected at the start of 2024. South African Weather Service meteorologist Kgolofelo Dube said residents in the interior can brace themselves for cold mornings with temperatures dropping to -1ºC in Pretoria -2ºC in Johannesburg and -4ºC in Vereeniging with maximum temperatures barely reaching 14ºC as the cold front moves through the interior. A cold front/mid-latitude cyclone is expected to cause low atmospheric pressure and strong winds, resulting in large waves and storm surge in South Africa's west and south-east coasts on Monday, the South African Weather Service (Saws) said.
