It was the kind of email that hits like a gut punch. More than 350 community programs received a message from the Trump Justice Department: their funding was done. No warning. Just done. Millions of dollars slashed from efforts to stop gun violence, treat opioid addiction, and support victims of violent crime. The DOJ says the money no longer aligns with department priorities, but for programs like Oakland Youth Alive and the Baltimore Center for Hope, it's a death sentence. These frontline groups have helped reduce homicides by more than 30% in cities like Baltimore. And now, just before summer—when shootings typically spike—federal support is gone. This includes a $2 million grant pulled mid-cycle, hotlines shut down, violence interrupters laid off, and victims left with no resources. Farmers and residents in South-West Queensland are getting hammered by torrential rain which they didn't know was coming because there is no rain radar in the area. Murweh Mayor Shaun Radnedge told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "We've been advocating for the last six years that I've been involved, to the federal government of putting a rain radar in the western part of Queensland." "Now, the closest radar is Alice Springs, you have one in Mount Isa, one in Longreach and one in Charleville." "These areas that are getting impacted at the moment had no warning." Despite headlines that have dominated the news stating concerns about the stock market and its ability to keep thriving under a new political administration, Mick Heyman, founder of Heyman Investment Counseling, doesn't see the warning signs of a terrible market. "Close your eyes, it's fear of heights, and just let the long-term trend continue on," Heyman said. He is not the only one who sees little trouble evident on the horizon, as Vuk Vuković, chief investment officer at Oraclum Capital, sees the economy being able to avoid a recession throughout 2025. Ravi Chintapalli from the Global Fixed Income team at Nuveen, says in The NAVigator that structural changes have made the junk bond market stronger, while reducing default risk; as a result, yields of 7 percent should be normal and comfortable in 2025. After some brief chatter on our recent listening habits, we dive into discussing a handful of albums from throughout hardcore history where bands "sold out" by making metal, pop-punk, or butt-rock records. Parallel between Mt. 24 and 1 Thess. 5. B. THE DAY OF THE LORD (1 Thess. 5:2a). 1. Day of the Lord (1 Thess. 5:2) – a familiar OT refence. 2. The same event as the “coming of the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:15). See 2 Thess. 2:1-2. C. ANALOGY #1 - THE THIEF IN THE NIGHT (1 Thess. 5:2b). NO WARNING 1. Purpose of the thief in the night: 2. Surprise coming of the thief in the night: only unbelievers are in view. 3. Other uses of this analogy: Rev. 3:3; 16:15; 2 Pet. 3:10. D. ANALOGY #2 - LABOR PAINS (1 Thess. 5:3). NO ESCAPE 1. Peace and safety – 2. Sudden destruction comes like labor pains with no escape (1 Thess. 5:3). Conclusion 1. The day of the Lord is the day when both the saints are resurrected/raptured and unbelievers are judged. 2. The analogy of Christ coming as a thief in the night applies to unbelievers and teaches that there will be NO WARNING. 3. The analogy of labor pains, repeats and emphasizes that Christ's coming to judge unbelievers will be sudden and unexpected, so they are unprepared and are swiftly judged with NO ESCAPE. Discussion: Why is eschatology important for the Christian life? Paul's focus in this passage is on Christ's coming to judge unbelievers. What can we learn from this and apply to our lives? How can we be alert and sober minded as we wait for His return (see 1 Thess. 5:6).
