Send us a Text: Ask Us a Question! On this episode of Waypoints, host Jim Klug records on location in Punta Allen, Mexico with South African angler, adventurer, guide, and lodge manager Francois Botha. A true global traveler, Francois has spent his career working and fishing in some of the world's most remote and exciting destinations - from Alaska's wild rivers to the Indian Ocean atolls, from Central Africa to the Yucatán. Today, he and his wife Dasha manage the well-known Palometa Club on Ascension Bay, while also splitting time between Alaska and Africa. With decades of experience guiding, managing lodges, and exploring new waters, Francois brings a unique perspective on what it really takes to make a life in fly fishing.  In this conversation, Jim and Francois dive into the realities of lodge life - the preparation, the grind, and the rewards of managing a world-class fishing operation. Francois talks about the challenges of running remote programs, the dynamics of working as a couple, the importance of versatility as a guide, and the behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating unforgettable guest experiences. They also explore how South African anglers have made such an outsized impact on the global fly fishing community, the differences in client expectations around the world, and what the future looks like for the next generation of destination anglers, explorers, and professional lodge managers. After the success of the 2024 Belize and 2023 Baja Bluegrass events, we're excited to bring the experience back to Belize for 2025. The General Botha was originally an ex-Royal Navy cruiser, later converted into a training ship that served as a nautical college from 1922 to 1989. To honour the proud legacy of South Africa's only training ship, former students established the SATS General Botha Association Bursary Fund in 2011. The fund aims to provide life-changing educational opportunities for young South Africans pursuing careers in maritime studies. In an interview with BizNews, Tony Nicholas - chairman of the association and himself a former cadet, shared what it meant to train four Chiefs of the South African Navy, a Victoria Cross recipient from World War II, and a Mayor of Johannesburg. Nicholas explained that the training includes compulsory school projects, mentoring, and a range of activities such as swimming, pre-sea training, sailing, and motor boating, all supported by skilled volunteers. He noted that the Bursary Fund is viewed as a way to perpetuate the legacy of the General Botha and honour all those who trained aboard her.

Gozney Ovens are things of rare and wondrous beauty. I love retained-heat ovens. In fact I'm a little obsessed, having built two brick arch ovens and installed a prefabricated dome at my Karoo pizza spot. I've got notebooks full of doodles with designs of ovens base on 44-gallon drums. Although I read Kiko Denzer's seminal book 'Build Your Own Clay Oven' from cover to cover several times - I never had the space or time to actually construct one. When, one day a post about Gozney popped up in my Insta feed, I was immediately besotted. I tracked down the local agent and discovered an interesting back-story to the granting of an agency for Gozney to a South African distributor. With a background in building surf and consumer electronics brands, Dustin Botha of the LUKS Group started bringing Traeger pellet grills into the country from the US a while back. I've seen them around, but until I started researching this show, hadn't clicked how versatile and next-gen they actually are. This turned out to be a fascinating chat. It's worth going onto the gozney.co.za site to gaze in wonder at their ovens.Message me here with comments or guest suggestions.Treat yourself - order direct from Zuney WagyuGet a fair price with HeadsUp www.rwm2012.com On Instagram @a_table_inthecorner Cover image sketched by Courtney Cara Lawson All profile portraits by Russel Wasserfall unless otherwise credited Title music: 'In Time' by Olexy via Pixabay

History of South Africa podcast

This is episode 197. Which is a prime number and therefore symbolic too because this episode we're dealing with a unique event in Southern African history. The 8th Frontier war, which began on Christmas Day 1950, was going to end eventually although as with all conflicts that stretch into years, most of those involved despaired believing perhaps the guns would never fall silent. A British government under Russell had come a cropper partly because of the way in which this war dragged on, it led to Sir Harry Smith losing his job as Cape Governor, and Sir George Cathcart had arrived to escort the conflagration to its spluttering expiration. Lord Earl Grey had lost his job as Colonial Secretary, only a few weeks after he'd fired Harry Smith. Among the amaXhosa, things were actually not much better. The overall situation was different from the previous war, because there was no longer any attempt at a central command, or even unity of action. Chief Sandile of the amaNqgika had told his warriors to avoid gathering in large numbers, preferring quick and dirty small raids to anything large scale. Committing acts of mischief of all kinds as the British referred to it. For both the settlers and Xhosa people who were trying to get on with their lives, the unstable frontier was a torturous concoction of blood, sweat and tears. It was actually the Khoekhoe rebels under leaders like Willem Uithaalder who were determined to hold out whatever happened. This position was reinforced when the British conducted a show trial of a man who has been treated very badly by History, by the name of Andries Botha. A Khoe veteran — former of the Cape Mounted Rifles. He faced two treason trials, the first ended in 1851, but the settlers were baying for his blood as a former Cape Mounted Rifles commander who was accused of switching sides to fight with the amaXhosa. As you'll hear, he hadn't. In May 1852 he was re-arrested and marched into a court where Judge Sir John Wylde presided in what became known as South Africa's first show trial — foreshadowing others such as the Rivonia Treason Trials where Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life on Robben Island. It as an unprecedented event this 1852 show trial, the first of its kind in the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony. Previously the trials had been dominated by the almost ritualised sentencing of rebellious slaves, but this one was the first politically charged trial taking aim at an indigenous person, a man of Southern Africa, not a rebellious slave from Madagascar or West Africa. Botha was defended by two of the Cape's top lawyers, Frank Watermeyer and Johannes Brand. In what amounted to an unsightly rush, he was sentenced to death in spite of a strong defence, however the outrage that followed led to the death sentence commuted to life in prison. The amaXhosa were exhausted and in Febuary 1853, Sir George Cathcart, like his predecessors, had tired of greedy colonists making quite a bit of cash out of this war. They hiked up their prices for all goods, horses, oxen, feed, leather goods, food. After protracted negotiations, Sandile and Maqoma surrendered, along with their chiefs. They were pardoned by Cathcart, who had promised they would not be arrested like Siyolo, in exchange for an unconditional surrender. And so dear listener, the end of the eighth frontier war was inconclusive. At first glance, it appeared the British had prevailed, the amaXhosa had been vanquished. It had cost close to three million pounds, 16 000 Xhosa had died, 1400 British and colonials. It had given the world something called the Birkenhead Drill, women and children first. It had also revealed to planet earth, a modern war where a guerrilla-style army with experience in the bush had forced the conventional army into unconventional tactics.

In this episode, Kim is joined by Romantha Botha, the fearless producer and host of the South African docuseries Sex & Pleasure. Romantha doesn't shy away from anything, and this is the kind of conversation that will make you question everything. Romantha explains that love has been sold to women as a fantasy and to men as a responsibility, challenging women to stop forcing ill-fitted men into their “fairytale.” Love, she argues, can't be controlled, and people aren't as compatible as they think. From unpacking your beliefs around monogamy, fidelity, and sexuality… nothing is off the table. Romantha offers practical tips for how women can communicate their needs around sex, love, and pleasure — and overcome the shame of having needs and asking for them to be met. Kim's biggest takeaway? If you want honesty, you need to create a soft landing for people to be honest.
