The South African Local Government Association, SALGA has welcomed Cabinet's decision to send the Municipal Structures Amendment Bill to Parliament. Commonly called the "Coalition Bill", it aims to bring more stability, transparency and accountability to municipal coalitions. Coalition-led councils have jumped from 27 after the 2016 elections to 70 after 2021, making them a key feature of local government. SALGA says while the law is important, parties must also sign clear coalition agreements and focus on service delivery ahead of the 2026 polls. We spoke to SALGA spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba.

Labour federation the Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATU is holding its National Day of Action today alongside affiliates including SAMWU and SADTU. Members are marching to the National Treasury in Pretoria to hand over a memorandum. The memorandum is also directed to CoGTA, SALGA and the Department of Water and Sanitation. COSATU says the action is to defend workers' rights, collective bargaining and quality public services. To elaborate further on today's march we spoke to COSATU National Spokesperson, Zanele Sabela.

More than 60 municipalities have been flagged by National Treasury for defaulting on payments to service providers for years, accumulating billions in debt to Eskom and water boards, and failing to pay workers' pension contributions amounting to R1.43bn. National Treasury says the aim of its action is to ensure fiscal discipline among local authorities. The North Gauteng High Court has dismissed a bid by SALGA to halt Phase 2 of the Administration and Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act, AARTO, which starts today. Phase 2 extends AARTO nationwide to all municipalities and introduces the demerit points system for driver and operator licences, alongside wider enforcement of infringements through the Infringement Management System. The court said the matter lacked urgency, but will hear the merits later. SALGA says it is disappointed and would proceed, citing concerns over funding, a lack of consultation by the Department of Transport and municipal capacity to implement the Act.
