Managing Partner, Simon Ridpath, and Partner, Miranda Fisher, are joined by Mark Ramprakash, a renowned former cricketer who is among just 25 players in the game to have scored 100 first-class centuries. In this second episode of the second series of Client Conversations, Mark talks through his extraordinary achievements both in and outside cricket, as well as his keys to career longevity and his role in training and mentoring the next generation of English cricketers. About Mark Ramprakash Mark is one of England's most celebrated male cricketers of the past thirty years – his illustrious cricketing career saw him play for Middlesex, Surrey and England. He became the only man to have averaged over 100 runs in two successive seasons in the English game, earning recognition as Wisden Cricketer of the Year and PCA Player of the Year in 2007 thanks to his 2026 first-class runs. Upon his retirement from the game in 2012, Mark became the batting coach at Middlesex, and later served as the batting coach for England in 2015, helping an enviable batting lineup towards a World Cup victory in 2019. Outside cricket, Mark has diversified into a TV personality, trainer, mentor, and journalist. In 2006, he appeared on and won BBC's Strictly Come Dancing alongside Karen Hardy and has since appeared on special editions for Sports Relief. His journalistic endeavours have included opinion pieces on diversity in the game as well as mental health. Alongside his current role as batting coach, Mark serves as President for Middlesex. Since 2020, he has also been the director of cricket for Harrow School.
Gabby Logan is best known as a BBC sports presenter but has also turned her hand to stand up comedy for Sports Relief (2012), to writing her memoir called The First Half, and to ice baths on Freeze Your Fear (2022). She hosts an excellent podcast called Mid-Life in which she, a guest and an expert explore how to navigate the mysterious territory of middle age.She has 18 year old twins and is married to retired Scottish rugby union player Kenny Logan. I spoke to Gabby a few months after her son Reuben had left the nest, with her daughter Lois following suit in a year, and she told me how the house is starting to feel too big.We talked about her brother Daniel's sudden death in 1992 when he was 15, and Gabby was 19 - and how she and her family were - and still are - impacted by this tragedy. But Gabby has a core of positivity and stressed that people can go on to have a good life even when something so terrible happens.Gabby represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 as a rhythmic gymnast, which Gabby so perfectly described as: where sport meets showbiz. The brightly-coloured leotards she wore were not a million miles from what I wear on stage now - but she wasn't too impressed by my opening bid to buy them as a job lot. I'll keep working on her!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones Hosted on Acast. Community sport has been targeted in the first major release of the Government's Covid-19 recreation recovery package. And basketball – bypassed in the much smaller initial package – has won a special mention after its boss Iain Potter claimed his sport had been "kicked in the guts" by the snub.Sport New Zealand had claimed the national basketball league did not qualify for any handout in the first $4.6m release. But Potter hit back saying its league was similar to that run by netball, which won $2.2m.The Government appears to have responded to Potter's claim that basketball suffered an institutional bias against it.Potter told Newstalk ZB on Tuesday that basketball is getting $300,000 for the men's national league, and $200,000 for the women's league. He said it was "relief with a capital R" and that the women's league would probably have collapsed this season without this money.Minister of Sports and Recreation Grant Robertson announced where about one third of the $265m package will go."Today we're setting out how $80 million will be invested, with $54 million of that over the 2020/2021 financial year for organisations from community level through to elite level," he said."All levels of the sector have been affected by COVID-19 and this funding is focused on making sure the sector continues to thrive, while also ensuring New Zealanders can continue to maintain their wellbeing through physical activity."The details are:1) A $68m fund named Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa will support community sport. This particularly aims to help "younger people who are missing out, particularly in higher deprivation areas".2) A $25.4m fund to bolsters Sport NZ's partners, including helping with the costs to run national leagues with basketball getting a special mention.3) $10m for a second Community Resilience Fund to provide more support for local and regional organisations.4) An "initial" $7.3m to upgrade facilities for upcoming hosting of world cups. The total support package over four years was revealed in May's Budget 2020.
Some sporting organisations will see money from a Covid-19 relief package within days. The Government is committing $265 million to see Kiwi sport through the pandemic.Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson says $83 million is for immediate support while $78 million has been dedicated to modernise the sector via innovation.Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie told Kate Hawkesby what she wants to see from the rejig."First and foremost, our kids need equal opportunity to participate in sport, meaning my daughter and my son can go and try what they do, and the roadblocks that face either of them are addressed."She also wants the money targetted at grassroots sports groups."I want to get those little five-year-olds and the big girls back on court as soon as we can and enjoying their netball in a really safe environment."

After the boys recent trip to Southampton for the LiMST live experience at SuperPod 2020, event organizer (but not the man in charge of the live feed) and good friend Al (The Ministry Of Swooping Podcast) was kind enough to make the audio available to us so we can share it with our listeners! Find out why ya' boys were the only ones to have their live stream cut due to complaints! That's right! Hear the audio THEY didn't want you to hear! The show THEY tried to stop! To be honest... we're really not sure why. If you hear something you think deserved a complaint or was "too far" (We're scared to think what our listeners might find 'too much') then let us know! As the show was a fundraiser for Sports Relief we shared sports stories from Lees and Just Jonny will fully explain why neither one was naturally gifted in athletics. @legendpodcast legendinmypodcast@gmail.com

he song I have sent you this week is a tribute to my all time favourite rock and roller…Ricky Nelson….I have always been a massive fan of him and his songs and his wonderful guitarist James Burton…I have utilised titles from Ricky’s records and set them to the “Poor Little Fool” combination of chords which have been used in many pop songs…it tells the story of how his love songs helped heal our broken hearts when we had just been back heeled by a love of our life in school. ... Speaking of James Burton he is coming over again in July….along with Glen D. Hardin….pianist with The Crickets and many others. Again I’m involved which is always nice…Marty Wilde and The Merseybeats are also on the bill along with skiffler Chas McDevitt. I’m doing a spot on the Floral Pavilion with James and Glen backed by a great local band called “The Shakers” and The Passionettes female backing group who I love….so it should be fun. I’ve never worked with Glen D. but he has backed Jerry Lee and Roy Orbison with James so I’ll be thinking along those lines for my spot….rock and roll !!! I’ve worked with James on several occasions…great guitarist…great guy. ..We talked about my pal wrestler Adrian Street last week…there is a nice tale about him….before I knew him I remember him having a wrestling match with Jimmy Savile….after we had became friends I asked him about it…he was supposed to wrestle a guy who had been injured so the fight was called off and in his place the promoter decided to replace him with Savile…Adrian was NOT amused..especially as he was told not to take Savile lightly as he was SAS trained….the fight went on much to the annoyance of Adrian who proceeded to throw Savile around the ring by his hair…and really inflict some serious pain on him…Adrians wife described the bout as an angry wolf chasing a frightened rabbit…Savile ended up in hospital and never wrestled again. Another spacecraft is off on it’s way to Mars….it has been successfully launched …I’m sure much to the delight of the homeless and lower paid....I’ve said it before but I still fail to see the point of all this space business….and how much is it all costing?...the powers that be just carry on without asking anyone or mentioning the cost…next thing will be more cuts in the NHS and the police etc….because there is no money…..I doubt if 99.9% of the population care less whether there is life up there..As long as the half dozen boffins who are involved are happy jumping up and down and patting each other on the back….that’s O.K. then. I would be a bit more supportive if they sent Ant and Dec up there…..one way. ...on the showbiz front I thought Jo Brand did amazingly well walking 20 miles a day from coast to coast….in horrendous weather….raised a lot for charity…great stuff…and Michael Crawford is making a comeback for Sports Relief…he was interviewed on The One Show and looks incredible…he is 74!!....and what a nice bloke…I think he once lived in Hoylake. And I think Saturday night TV has lost the plot….”The Voice” is dreadful (the beeb will be well rid of it)…and Ant and Dec’s Takeaway is as bad as it gets..they are never off the screen even when they have guests….and they copy routines originally done by Morecambe and Wise…who, lets face it,were the REAL deal.... …and as for Jonathan Ross…oh dear.
